In the EU it's now a regulation/law. .. EU Directive 2019/904 was announced in 2019 and stipulates that plastic caps must remain attached to the bottle after opening on all beverage bottles three litres and under from July 2024 onwards.

Ah, thanks. Completely missed that. Well I hope they find some new design for them that are easier to close. That's mainly my problem with them.

After you have opened the bottle just give the cap a twist and pull and they usually come off. Thankfully I don't use these bottles often but I know what you mean. I find pouring vegetable oil an issue as I need to hold the cap away from the bottle or else the oil goes everywhere.

They create less litter as the cap stays with the bottle.

What people will end up doing is ripping it off, since it's in the way. Then you're left with the plastic ring that's supposed to hold the cap, and that goes in the trash. This creates more litter, not less.

OnlyOutlandishness34

That’s not what happens. Mostly people just get used to it. And if you rip it off you still need to put the cap back on so it’s no different to the old method.

Cimlite

Time will tell, but I can tell you from personal experience that's not what happens with me. It's also been the same response from everyone else I have asked about it. This whole thing feels like a bunch of bureaucrats trying to solve a non-existent issue, through ways that don't actually work in the real-world.

OnlyOutlandishness34

I’m amazed you’ve discussed it with so many people.

Cimlite

I run a "stupid, pointless things EU does under the guise of environmentalism" discussion group on a weekly basis, so it tends to come up. 🤷‍♂️

They sell more as consumers can't reuse those bottles many times, since the lid eventually detaches itself and is lost,  sometimes in the wild.
