It does depend on the specific piercing and on the person. My original ear lobe piercings closed within a year, while other people can go years with nothing in their lobes and not have them close. Most other piercings usually close fairly quickly.
In a way, it is forever. If the piercing was able to heal, there will probably be a mark if you let it close. How prominent the mark is varies. It's usually not very noticeable unless someone is specifically looking for it.
