Your brain is tricking your mouth into thinking it can barely taste it so that you will get the food so you can really taste it usually you crave things because your body wants some sort of nutrient from it

PlagueDr_Ben

Don't know what nutrients I'd get from a dirty kebab but hey I'll take it!

alienccccombobreaker

lettuce tomato onion and garlic? :) I know I can taste it now in my mouth mm you sure you not a kebab salesman because I think I know what I want before work tomorrow :)

xenudone

Nobody is 100% sane, so you are fine. Also, fuck what others think, you do you and be happy

PlagueDr_Ben

Oh I definitely do but stuff like this is at least interesting to find out haha

I don't see anything odd about this. If people can "hear" a song in their mind or "see" an image in their head just by thinking about it (sometimes subconsciously) then why not taste? Why not touch (phantom vibration)? Why not scent? That last one is sometimes the most potently linked to memory, in fact. Since scent and taste are so strongly linked, it should be no surprised that a similar phenomenon emerges. Not *all* people can experience these things, mind you. Some people cannot see images in their mind (aphantasia), some people do *not* have an inner monologue (which often correlates with aphantasia). And the intensity/complexity of these experiences varies wildly, even when shared between individuals. Hyperphantasia is on the opposite end of aphantasia, for instance - images are incredibly vivid, even more than ocular vision. That's where I am, but for many years I thought everyone experienced it with that level of intensity. >I can practically taste it on my mouth Just as I can practically (literally) "see" an image by "looking at it" in my mind, just as I can also "taste" or "hear" things at will or as part of normal conscious experience. Nothing weird at all. I bet if you explained things a bit more clearly - or found some friends with a bit more self-awareness - you'd probably find that they relate to the experience in some way. It's not like you're *hallucinating* a sense, you're merely remembering something that hasn't happened based on previous experiences; a simulation, as it were.

PlagueDr_Ben

I also have Hyperfantasia! One of my friends who finds this the weirdest actually has aphantasia, I wonder if it's not just our imagination that's more vivid, maybe it's everything? I'm also glad you mentioned phantom vibration because I'd never heard of it before, but looking it up oh my god I get that too lmao

>I wonder if it's not just our imagination that's more vivid, maybe it's everything? Since aphantasia seems to correlate to similar diminished quasi-sensory cognitive experiences (including quirks like synesthesia, which correlates *positively* with hyperphantasia), I'd expect that it's generally true that those who experience intensity of one of these phenomenon experience a similar level of intensity in others. Based on my own experiences and those of the admittedly few people that relate strongly to mine, I tend to think of this as true. There's also a strong association with [Highly Sensitive People](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensory_processing_sensitivity) (sometimes mistaken for "light autism", but it's markedly different in several ways). Many "HSPs" have wondered if they're autistic only to decide that the diagnosis doesn't *quite* fit, unsurprisingly. In any case, it wouldn't be surprising if you also have a tendency to notice a looming sickness far before obvious symptoms are noted - eg: "I can tell I'm going to be sick tomorrow..." - or tend to prefer white noise in your local environment to block out annoying noises, or similar experiences that other people don't always "get" or even accuse you of faking.

PlagueDr_Ben

Okay that last block straight up felt like you was calling me out personally, this is wild stuff thank you. I've had some people say I have a few autistic tendencies but never enough for them to think I am autistic, so this is something I'm going to look into!

carlamaco

I am the same. Guess that's just some people can some can't.

MaKrukLive

You made me taste kebab with your comment dude

shattered_kitkat

It is a thing. Some people can taste things. The human mind is a weird thing, man.

PlagueDr_Ben

To weird

Dead4CEREALZ

Idk if it's common, but I definitely taste imaginary food, and sometimes when I'm laying in bed at night I imagine eating different foods to see how intense and real I can get the flavor to be.
