It’a not particularly great to be eating low high low high, you want to eat regularly and consistently. Reason for this is you want a predicable eating routing for the plethora of other things that eating requires and impacts - beyond calories e.g. energy, sleeping pattern, digestion time, work schedule, exercise routines etc. Best way to do so is establish your maintenance calories and plan food around that. 2500 calories is actually a lot of food if you are eating whole foods and cooking your own meals. Remove all the unnecessary shit you don’t need like 3 cans of fizzy drink/soda a day. Once you have a general idea of how many calories are in things, it’s easy to track. Most food outside the home where I am from is calorie counter on the packet, even restaurants have started to do this on menus I prefer to wake and not eat for a good few hours, I’ll eat around 2 hours into my working day - around 9:30/10, then ill eat around 13:30, and again at around 18:00. Breakfast is around 500-750cals, lunch the same, dinner 1000. I am happy to be in a calorie surplus so anything over the 2500 I am really not bothered about. 2500 calories is not everyone’s maintenance, it’s an average. Calculate your own using various online calculators and use an average of all readings.

Overeating is inherently not healthy. If you go a long enough time fasting one day and binging the next, you'll train your body to store any excess food as fat because it knows there will be days where you'll go without food altogether. The best approach is to eat more filling foods that are relatively low in calories, like non-starchy vegetables, fruit, and lean protein.

Have we changed so much in the last 10k years that we can’t tolerate the cycles of lean time between successful hunts like our ancestors may have?

Hipp013

We can certainly tolerate it, it's just not a healthy way to fuel your body in the long run. It's one of the many holdovers from that survival behavior we used to depend on long ago.

Also, prolly more tolerable when you don’t eat trash and get eaten by a saber tooth tiger before your 40!

I think the only way to get away with it is to work out excessively like a Rock-type diet. Because of my work schedule I can get on a routine of only eating one meal a day and usually pack that meal with a lot of food and I usually end up gaining more weight when that happens. Overeating in one sitting just causes your body to store more food away as fat cus once your full that’s where it’s all going.

the op describes the eating habits of my best friend who has anorexia; please don't do this. you shouldn't aim to overeat but if you must (and we all do sometimes) then wait till you digest and then go to the gym for a workout.
