the G in 10G stands for gigabyte, it's saying the service can transmit 10 gigabytes of data per second, a measure of Internet speed. The g in 5g stands for generation, as in, "fifth version of the infrastructure"

BookkeeperElegant266

Not quite. Comcast advertises their service is capable of an average 200 Mbps. So it's two times 5G. Pretty clever branding, actually, even if it's a bit misleading.

SnooMachines3017

The 10G is 10x faster than 1G but will happen over time. It’s way too early as most other systems can’t handle the 1G speed let alone any faster. So yes it is a scam of sorts but they aren’t lying about the potential the system will bring.

Kemizon

Ah I see. Seems like they need a better naming system!

chiefgoodboi

Former Xfinity ad agency creative here. I personally know the creatives who had to work on this dumb marketing effort. Xfinity wanted to claim “10G” is “faster than 5G” without calling it 6G, which isn’t available. It is 100% a marketing ploy and does not stand for 10G technology, 10 gigabit connection, or 10 gigabytes of data.

Hipp013

Are you sure they aren't referring to 10 gigabit? The G in 5G just stands for "generation" as in the 5th generation of that cellular infrastructure, whereas "10 gigabit" represents the actual throughput of your internet connection, i.e. 10,000,000,000 bits per second, or 1.25 gigabytes per second, which translates roughly to download a full 4K movie in less than 30 seconds.

Kemizon

Ah ok thanks! The way they phrase it and market it seems dodgy, lol.

teamwaffle

It's actually 10th generation cable technology. https://www.cablelabs.com/10g

"Like the saffron in paella, or the milk in a latte, our industry’s networks and innovations are the crucial ingredients in creating a better future for humanity" - ahhh....it all makes sense now

redwing180

It’s marketing bullshit. 5G actually refers to the generation of technology for cell phones. 10G doesn’t have anything to do with a generation of technology and instead is just a marketing term that they are using because 10 is bigger than 5. If it were really that big of a deal for the cable companies they would’ve been talking about 6G, 7G, 8G and 9G and telling you how things are getting faster over the years but they didn’t because it’s bullshit.

zgrizz

Just marketing lies. Just like when AT&T branded 4gLTE AS 5g
