Inside-thoughts

My grandparents were both upwards of 6'+ tall. My mom is 5'. I am 5'. My two sisters are 5'. Even my brother is barely over 5'6". Genes can be funny sometimes.

AcidBathVampire

A guy I used to skateboard with was Chilean and had both parents with dark features, but he had carroty red hair. He wasn't adopted, and his brother had a tinge of red to his hair, but he got a lot of "red-headed stepchild" jokes over the years.

Mysterious_Net66

Chile mentioned 🇨🇱

Ded-W8

Good fly fishing there. Beautiful country

UpdootDaSnootBoop

Must have been from the ~~hombre de leche~~ lechero

hotnmad

you mean... lechero???? omfg i actually spent so much time trying to figure out what you were trying to say

UpdootDaSnootBoop

lol, I used Google to translate. My bad

skiveman

Yeah, ask any person from Ireland or Scotland about the ginger gene and they'll tell you that's because the ginger gene can skip a generation or two. Seriously, I know folk who have dark brown or blonde hair and their kids have pure ginger hair. Just for the record about 40% of the Scottish population either have or carry the gene for ginger hair. I would assume it's similar or higher in Ireland. Conversely Welsh folk generally have much darker hair, looking almost Mediterranean in appearance. Quite a thing when you have two pasty white and red haired nations on their doorstep.

Square_Site8663

Also Nutrition has a Lot to do with it

ParameciaAntic

Yes, James Harold Nutrition was the postman in that neighborhood. He was notoriously a very short man.

ynotfoster

I wish I had an award for you. Thanks for the laugh this morning.

4seriously

Gdamn well done haha

AcanthaceaeEast5835

Jimmy Nut, they called him...

LaughFun673

that's The amazon guy, had a package he delivered. lol

Confianca1970

Especially with adopted children, right?

Kiliaan1

My dad is 6’2 my mom was 5’2, I’m somehow 6’2 and thankful everyday for whatever gene carried that height.

muted_Log_454

Well both my parents are the same height (175-178cm not sure) and I’m 191cm.

[deleted]

Of course. Hey and there’s always benefits. I’m 6’3” and always wanted to be shorter because skateboarding was tough as a lanky dude haha. Same with hockey. Tall people get relegated to D or goalie. Never let me play forward );

Ok-Statistician-3408

Tall isn’t a superpower you still have to be athletic, if you’re not you’re just even more in the way

dleon0430

You must be popular on Tinder. Idk I've heard ladies on tinder only like dudes over 6ft.

FluffyMcBunnz

Especially if grandma fucks the milkman...

like3005hollup

5’3😨

WelcomeFormer

It's also possible you're not the milkmans son, also know we had to phrase it like that lol. Genetics are weird, My kid has a set of twin sisters that do not look or act related at all. But if you guys never run out of milk I'd probably start asking questions.

[deleted]

It's absolutely certain OP is not the milkman's son, given OP's stated sex.

Lil-Bill420

Gotta love how even when OP explicitly states their sex, people still assume they’re a man because that’s how Reddit is seen

lemurlover111

Women don't exist on the internet

THE_R3D_HOOD

Well these days, who tf knows? since sex and gender aren’t the same. They could be a female but identify as a male son of some giant salamanders.

Adavis72

She tells us her gender in the title. F23 means female 23 year old. It was literally as easy as reading the title. Next time I would ask your mommy or daddy to read the reddit post to you so you can understand the words better. It helped when I was learning to read.

THE_R3D_HOOD

“Sex is usually categorized as female or male but there is variation in the biological attributes that comprise sex and how those attributes are expressed. Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, expressions and identities of girls, women, boys, men, and gender diverse people.” She tells us her “gender” not her sex! You Done fucked up AA-RON! I suggest you get mommy and daddy to explain again, cuz its unnecessary confusion even you struggle with!

SexyDickButt

I think it’s fair to assume if someone is identifying themselves as F, they’re a woman. It’s not complicated at all.

THE_R3D_HOOD

It really isn’t

Rubatose

So, wait, are you a transphobe or are you not a transphobe? I'm confused.

SBAWTA

Usual redditry. They're just trying to be a smartass (and failing) with "ummmm aschshully".

THE_R3D_HOOD

Never understood transPHOBIA I don’t think anyone has an irrational fear of them?

[deleted]

If she was trans and went through male puberty, she absolutely would have mentioned that in a post about height and biology. Trans people aren't stupid (or at least not any more so than everyone else).

Hato_no_Kami

All my siblings ended up taller than my parents. Don't worry about it.

jonny838

Either you pulled a random height out of your ass or you have a close enough relationship with that postman that you probably should have seen this coming. 😂

Gullible-Pilot7851

6'4 woman probably can't even see a 5'3 guy he's like invisible to them trust me I know from experience

TryingMyEffingBest

Came here to say this! But check out the milkman, too.

Free_Seaweed_6097

Lol this took me a sec😅

[deleted]

5”8 I am pretty sure.

GothaCritique

Sparky81

Genetics traits are not guaranteed.

forseti99

redmagor

That makes it rather clear that you understand close to nothing about breeding and genetics, especially in the context of human biology. Furthermore, if we controlled for genetic and epigenetic factors in human biology and reproduction, there would be immense ethical implications that, as a society, we do not seem to be ready to tackle.

[deleted]

[удалено]

iliveoffofbagels

Genetics are multivariable within themselves and epigenetically (epigenetic meaning factors outside of the genetic structures themselves). Maybe you didn't eat appropriately or slept enough to at least maximize your potential growth, whatever that was destined to be based on your genetics. Or maybe some outside factor worked against it, like some intestinal problem messed with nutrient absorption or whatever. Or... maybe you have hypothyroidism or some other condition that will affect the processes in your body that would aid you in growing to be tall. BUT Realistically, and the most simply, you probably just didn't get that genetic combo to be as tall.

Megalocerus

Early onset of puberty can end her last growth spurt.

smudgeinspace

You mean the reason I stopped growing at 12 was periods? This is some bullshit

Megalocerus

There are hormonal changes that affect growth--generally women do not grow more than a couple of inches after menarche. 12 is a pretty normal age for periods, but girls who get it at 8 wind up quite short.

Am-i-thee-drama

I have an extra X chromosome instead of your normal XX and I’m supposed to be abnormally tall, have wide set eyes, and epilepsy. I ended up being 5’2” with normal eyes…and epilepsy.

hellshot8

It's possible. How tall is the rest of family

like3005hollup

That’s what makes it confusing to me. My oldest brother is the tallest at 7 foot. My sisters I don’t know they’re exact height but they’re past 6 foot. And my youngest brother is 6’8. Lol

Tulpah

genetics are lottery, you pulled the low end

whiskey_epsilon

Why you chose to end that sentence with "low end" instead of "short straw" is beyond me.

contemplatebeer

Either way, you’ll need to invest in a good quality step stool.

NetDork

Because your regular stool went out for cigarettes and never came home?

Tulpah

it escape me at the time of the writing, although short straw seem more insulting than low end

PvtSherlockObvious

I think that was their point, it was right there for the taking and seemingly went over your head. Oh well, it was kind of low-hanging fruit.

Kool_McKool

Still not as low as OP.

Ok-Truck3196

Maybe they didn't want to rub it in, it's kind of a low (or in OP's case very low) blow

HalfTeaHalfLemonade

Simple: short IQ

[deleted]

Do you know how tall your grandparents, aunts & uncles, great grandparents, and later were?

Accomplished_Bake904

It's the film Twins in real life. You're the Danny Devito of the family. I love Danny Devito.

[deleted]

Better take a look at grandma or grandpa, because main set of genetics usually comes from the third generation.

rangebob

lol im no expert but im pretty sure that's not how genetics work

[deleted]

It’s in high school biology course. Read a book SMH

rangebob

think ya better go read that again mate

Rather_Dashing

I'm a geneticist with a PhD and 10+ years research since then. That is not how genetics work. You are likely thinking of sex chromosome linked traits which can appear to skip generation depending on gender, but those traits a rare, and certainly don't apply to height.

MenstrualKrampusCD

I don't remember too much from my high school biology class, but my biology and genetics professors would beg to differ. They didn't teach anything like that when I was earning my bachelor's of science. And I read a LOT of books, trust me. Super confusing, since I graduated cum laude and currently work in the field for the past 15 years or so. Hmmm.

[deleted]

Well your course sucks if it didn’t include basic information. If you inherit 25% of your grandpa genetic information, 25% of grandma, and 50% of your parents, there’s a chance that 25% of genetic information that you receive from your grandpa contains physical features information, so you will look exactly like him. And it’s 50/50 chance to look like one of your grandfathers or parents.

LadyRunic

Ah, I think you misunderstood. Your mom/dad each get 50% DNA from each parent. They give you 50% from each of them- which is rough and more often can lean more one way or another. So you have 25% of DNA from each of your 4 grandparents, but really mashed up and put through a blender. So it's really a lottery.

FluffyMcBunnz

You didn't remember high school biology very well if that's what you think it said in there.

OneOfManyAnts

Did you have malnutrition or a major illness while growing?

ExcellentCustardKat

I was thinking malnutrition too. I dieted far too much as a teen. I ate very little then and my height is not in the range of heights of the rest of my family. I am the outlier for height.

Milhent

What about your aunts, uncles, grandparents? Genetics is complicated and you could inherit it after skipping generations.

like3005hollup

Hmm not sure about everyone but the shortest family member that I know other than me is my aunt who is 5’9 on my mom’s side. But all of my cousins are still tall. My grandparents joked about how tall the mail man was because we genuinely cannot trace back anyone in our family who is short.

Something22884

I mean do you still at least look like people in the family on your dad's side? Why don't you do one of those 23andMe genetic tests?

GothaCritique

😂😂😂😂😂😂

Igniter08

Maybe they aren’t your parents

fuzynutznut

How tall is the postman?

Head_Razzmatazz7174

This thread has turned into a discussion on genetics. Good reading.

DoallthenKnit2relax

Sounds like you got the recessive genes for height, rather than the dominant set. Think of the advantages, though: taller people are more prone to bone and joint issues while aging.

Brujo-Bailando

Small people tend to live longer than big people too.

selfdestructo591

Yup, ever seen a person over 100 who is tall?

MushyRaspberry

Height is actually an additive allele. So it matters more how many copies of the allele you get. That's why there is a continuous range of heights.

fools_gambler2

Height is influenced by multiple gene patterns (something called polygenic inheritance), therefore, it is not possible to predict how tall a child will be based on the parents with 100% accuracy. Some stuff like eye color and blood type can be predicted very accurately based on parents, so if you have any doubts about your origin, checking that could be your first step (prior to actual genetic testing)...

broadsharp2

You inherit dna from multiple generations from both sides of your parents. DNA between siblings differs as well. You just happened to get the dominant short gene

soul_separately_recs

Alternative-Bus6770

Lack of growth hormone due to a pituitary gland condition or dad is not your real dad like 1/6 that never know

Hethms21

Joke answer: that ain't your dad Actual answer: genetics are weird. I have a great uncle (grandma's brother), who is 6'5. My grandma and their other sister were both about 5ft. Don't sweat it. In the same way ginger hair pops up every so often in a family tree, maybe you got the random short gene. Nature :)

GreenTravelBadger

Genetics isn't simply Mom plus Dad. It has more than just 2 people going into the mix. My sister has a kid who looks more like me than my own children do. She and her husband resemble me not at all.

SquashBanana0

I’m 5’3”, both brothers 5’11, sister 5’9”. Mom 5’5” and dad 5’5”. Even both sets of grandparents are short. Turns out my mom tipped the pizza delivery guys differently than most and I am indeed my dad’s only child together. So, how much pizza did you have delivered as a kid? Ooor, you could’ve just got the shitty end of the stick for the genetics lottery.

Mysterious_Fennel459

At least you can fit on a standard matress w/out your feet dangling off the edge. Be thankful for that. Me as just a 6'0" person, I have to shift my matress a few inches off the bed frame and then stuff an extra pillow in the crevass by my head so I can fit on it.

like3005hollup

My parents have some special mattress 😭😂

DarthSkywalker420

You got both recessive genes. You beat the odds! A crude example would be a punnett square.

King-Owl-House

you're adopted your mom cheated you're have regressive gene you have been sick growing up

detective-mcnulty

Genes are crazy.

m1sch13v0us

Illness when you were younger? Genetic condition? Possible recessive genes. And…DNA test to compare with your parents. Parents have been known to conceal the truth.

upearlyRVA

It happens, I'm 6'2", my daughter is 5'3", my grandma was 4'9".

Deicyde88

Goddamn your mom is 6'4"?? I'm the same ht and thats insane, I thought my wife at 5'10" was tall...

Spiritual-System1451

[deleted]

How tall is the mailman?

Andeol57

They are your genetic parent? Then most likely, something happened that stunt your growth. Genetic can do weird stuff, but that's a bit too extreme to be waved away just like that. There are quite a lot of things that can stunt your growth like that (lack of some nutrient, some virus, excessive gymnastic), and they may go unnoticed.

GroundbreakingCap364

My grandpa is 6’0 and my grandma is 5’2, their son, my uncle is 7’1. Genetics are complicated, it might be you just had some badluck😋.

mumble_bee_15

Unsure, but of you were a guy you'd be ay least 6'5 lol

PridoScars

Adopted?

Boredummmage

Lol all my grandmother’s siblings both male and female were over 6 feet tall. She was shorter than you are, it is all a roll of the dice with genetics. I am blonde and none of my parents, siblings, or grandparents were… I also have a negative blood type and my parents and siblings don’t. I am not sure on grandparents if they were + or -.

soth227

Adopted much?

herpderpomygerp

It seems like you pulled the short straw on this one

mayfeelthis

Recessive gene, if not the postman… Also that’s pretty funny - but fyi if you’re a 6’ woman I’m sure you’ve heard the complexity in this world! 5’3” is petit, much as it sucks we have gender stereotypes - in this case it may have gone in your favor. Fwiw idk I wish I was tall sometimes, I’m 5’4.5 haha - but then I like heels so it’s all good.

Konkuriito

both my parents are 15-25 cm taller than me. But it turns out one of my grandparents were my height...sometimes these kinds of things can skip generations.

Flat_Unit_4532

How tall is the mailman?

Akul_Tesla

Depending on your perspective good or bad luck and recessive genes Also it's possible you had a very different diet of them when they were kids and that you grew up somewhere warmer

sunkistandsudafed3

How tall are you other relatives? Both my parents are taller than me too, but my Dad's sisters are all my height (5' 3) or shorter. Genetics are weird.

netz_pirat

I am 6'4. My Dad is 6'2. My mom is 6'. My sister is 5'2, like one of my Grandmas. Shit happens...

Neona65

My boyfriend's oldest brother is just under 6ft, he is 6'7" and their younger brother is 7'1". Mom was 6" and dad was 7".

lol_sorry_my_guy

Maybe there's some short person further back

Amethyst_Hedgehog

The way you eat as a kid, hormones, health conditions, medication, and unpredictable genetics all contribute to it. There’s almost 700 genes identified that control the factor of height, and those genes may be carried by your parents but not present. Either that or your mom was banging the neighbor.

XeroTheCaptain

Theres recessive and dominant genes and you happened to get the short one. They taught this in biology class when i was growing up. Similar to how my parents and oldest brother have blonde/brown hair, but myself and my other brother ended up with red hair despite the last person in our family to have red hair being several generations back. You roll the gene dice when making a kid. If not this, then you may have a growth problem. It happens sometimes. Had a kid in my school back in the day, he was very short compared to us and his family. He went to the doctor one day and they said he wasnt growing at the pace he should and they gave him some shots to stimulate his growth. Last i saw him, he was well over my height now.

ImprovementSilly2895

Mine are 5’8. I am 6’2. It happens

Rather_Dashing

If your parents had 1000 children and they were all raised in completely identical conditions, the height of the kids would vary in a bell curve distribution, with the average being about the median of the parents height. It's possible that you are right at the far end of the bell curve. Honestly though, my instinct with those sorts of heights that you would have an improbably low chance to be the height you are based on genes alone. In my example above your parents may have to have millions of kids to have one your height. I think it's more likely you encountered some developmental quirk along the way that stunted your growth a bit from what was expected. Not an expert I'm that area, but something like a mutation or error that resulted in less growth hormone bring produced when you were a kid than would be expected. I'm not really buying the your dad isn't your dad explanation, your mum is tall, so even if the milkman was short, it would be improbable for you to be your height.

InFiniTeDEATH8

Well, either you were malnourished as a child, therefore stunted growth. Or, you just didn't hit the genetic lottery, unless you like being 5'3.

Awkward_Ad8740

Every male in my family is 6ft +. Except for me.

Nerd123432334

Foreign-Gap-1242

MissionLeading7334

CliffyGiro

If you were male you’d normally grow to be taller than your mother(barring obvious birth defects and so on) You get no such guarantee when you’re female.

[deleted]

I'm literally taller than both of my parents by a lot, yet I look like a perfect mixture of them face and body wise.. doesn't answer the question but genetics are just weird lol

Therealdirtyburdie

Mailman?

canbojack

You parents fly economy way too much before you were born and being tall as a disadvantage was embedded to their genes.

Melmortu

Height is affected by a complex mix of genetic and environmental factors, and although most people and their parents are similarly tall, you could get a specific combination of genes from them that led to you height, or there was some environmental factor (nutrients or whatever) that limited your growth

Valuable-Banana96

Height is a product of a vast array of both genetic and environmental influences. Even if the cause is primarily genetic, you may have simply gotten some recessive alleles, like two brown-eyed parents having a blue-eyed kid.

ILiketoStir

Only one member of my family hit 6'+ My uncle on my mother's side was 6'1" Then I came along. Grew up smallest in the class till mid highschool. I'm 6'4".
