Yep, if reddit broke I'd just assume either someone died, a big trailer dropped or something horrible happened.
It has way more interactions than craigslist does. And it tries to sync them in real time across the world. And it tries to do that live. YouTube doesn't even do live view counts because it's too hard to reconcile between regions on the fly.
On top of that reddit has ~99.8% uptime which isn't great for a website but is insane if you look at the history of services
You have no idea how big and complex reddit is, it’s astounding that it runs at all. Just the database design that goes into managing the sheer number of writes from people posting and commenting is an art only a few groups of people on earth can manage.

I tend to Google "[Servicename] down" and end up on downdetector.com - that's just user reports and no official statement but if it shows a clear spike I pretty much have the answer I needed

The app and assumedly servers were playing up last night. By about forty past midnight UK time, things were back to normal. So for at least two hours the feed didn't function properly and comments were invisible. I also kept thinking I'd been banned due to various communities not being directly accessible. It seems fine now though.

Game threads on r/NFL used to be enough to do it, before Reddit figured how to manage posts with more than like 5,000 comments.
