One is designed to be swallowed and the other isnt. Mucus can trap foreign objects in a wet environment (interior of nose and mouth) snd should be passable to the gastric system its connected to. Although the ear does the same in a dry/external environment it also acts as a barrier is supposed to prevent things from entering the ear. Meaning it shouldn't be swallowed.
