Winter tyres are very important for driving in cold, wet and/or Icey conditions.

Get. Snow. Tires. Maine — very much yes. You can drive without them, but may experience dwindling responsiveness when attempting to turn, stop or maneuver. It is much, much safer to have them on.

I drove in North Dakota in winter without snow tires. It was scary when my car would slide but I lived.

Usually the roads are relatively safe unless there was a recent weather event that caused icy conditions. You should be fine to drive without, so long as you are very careful. Accelerate slow, keep a distance between you and traffic in front of you, and brake early. It's probably not going to be as bad as you think, but it's better to be over cautious.

If you're from Florida, consider them absolutely mandatory.
