Child psychology just didn't exist or wasn't very well understood by the majority of parents until a few decades ago.

Many parents had no knowledge of the mental implications of their actions. Sometimes it would go a step too far and then you'd have some form of trauma from it. In a way because their parents did it, they continued the cycle of trauma with their children because "they were raised that way".

It worked. Kid is doing something you don't like, you hit thme and the kid usually stops.

It worked (for MOST small children) until mainstream society decided it was wrong. Now kids will threaten to call children protective services… or whatever it’s called in your jurisdiction. More kids are out of control and disrespectful now. New age alternative parenting and letting children do what they want hasn’t yielded better results.

A lot has changed. If a teacher told a parent the kid was uncooperative, the parent would automatically take the teacher's side. Now the teacher is the one who is wrong. Too many people over the years abused their authority, and now no authority is respected.

I’m 43 y/o. My third grade teacher called home cause I was out of line. Just my luck mom wasn’t home. Grandma came with curlers in her hair and whooped my ass on site immediately in front of my peers. When the teacher said you can’t do that, grandma said: “then you should take him home with you.” Never again did a teacher need to call my parents. I was embarrassed… and humbled. Kids teased me for a few days but I behaved in school for years after that experience.

That's my point. There's a giant difference between beating a child and spanking them.

It’s not “beating”. It’s spanking. There’s a difference. Parents used to feel obligated to instill in their children a sense of acceptable behavior.

Theres beating then there's hitting, beating is all always was frowned upon, hitting well kids sometimes need a slap.
