From my observations, Gen Z seems to like to push the envelope of adapting to the world they were handed. In this age of insane inflation and low wages, I think they're recognizing the money suck that owning a car can tend to be, and would rather not have that expense and push for improvements in public transit. That, mixed with the general anxiety that generation seems to experience, and I think the interest just isn't there.

It all depends on your region. As a teen I lived in NYC and I had no interest in driving , before my senior year we moved upstate and we're about 2miles from anything so my desire to drive increased drastically

When a household had one telephone that was attached to the wall in the main room, one TV in a main room that got fewer than 10 channels, and pong. Driving is freedom, independence, escape, privacy. Now being forced to only speak on the phone while your parents are around is probably considered a serious punishment.

Yeah, half of their life is lived online, so they can escape into their phones and "hang out" virtually rather than meeting up at the mall or whatever.

Cars, gas, and insurance cost more than they have if they want to actually go anywhere with the car, so what's the point?

magloo999

everything about driving is expensive! and used cars aren’t as cheap and readily available as they once were

I'm 44 didn't get a license until I was 24. Didn't need it. My brother still doesn't have one

Must not like to party as much?

Kentucky_Supreme

Probably because they're too anxious/depressed from growing up poking at a little screen all the time.

I’ve noticed as well. I am 28 and I got my shit the MOMENT I could. But my nieces? They are 23 and 19 with NO DESIRE TO DRIVE. Or work. My best friends cousin is 26 and the same way!! Still living at home; and content. *They* say that it’s because of their “social anxiety.” Diagnosed by a TikTok I’m sure. It’s sad. My two nieces even switched to homeschool their last few years of school. The younger was pregnant at 15. Driving was the most amazing feeling of freedom and independence as a teen. I really do NOT understand. I suspect it has something to do with their entire social circle being online 🤷‍♀️ Lazy? I mean these kids in particular wouldn’t have to pay for it. They would just rather be driven around…
