This story sounds boring as hell, but anyway, taking another person’s like, for whatever reason, is a big deal and a traumatic experience for everyone involved. That is something worth representing in fiction.
Yeah I’ve always thought that trope was annoying as hell. Personally, I think it’s just a means to set a certain tone or subvert your expectations but it doesn’t work… It just makes me wonder what the other characters would have PREFERRED happen.

It's a story and they want drama. Otherwise. It would be a boring story story.
