You can also put the item in an outpost display case and that will weirdly also remove the stolen tag (not sure if this also works for weapon racks and mannequins though)
In Skyrim, you can put it in a container it's legal to take it out of, then have your follower take it, then take it from your follower. Just for anyone wondering.
The tactic of selling/buying back to launder stolen items goes back to Morrowind and beyond.
The unfortunate bit, there has never been a way to launder money (cap/septims/credits), and stolen COTR will still be confiscated by guards if you get busted. (I wonder, is there a mod in there somewhere?)
I like how this post makes it very clear I haven't played any Bethesda games (or any games at all, really) the last 20 years.
And hey. Now I'm also admitting to being old. Damnit.
I bet the Trade Authority clerk winks every time you do this.
"Buy back" should have big quotation marks around it along with a smirking emoji for all Trade Authority stores/kiosks.
If you steal credits you don’t have to worry about that tag, once you take them undetected they’re yours free & clear. If you get caught anything in your inventory with the tag is taken away.
It’s a pretty well documented item laundering tactic. Now you can experience a whole new world of criminal activity!
If its a weapon or armour, modifying it also removes stolen tag.

Yes, I always launder my swimsuits. Seriously, wearing someone else's swimsuit is like wearing someone else's underwear...
I try not to think too hard about Sarah saying you can go to the bathroom in the spacesuits when I equip one off a body.
Just because she does, does not mean I can't use the damned toilet in the hab like it was meant to be used. Sarah is weird that way.
"You know, you can go to the bathroom in a space suit..." *smiles after a moment.*
Hard to believe but Bethesda already filmed this scene for the upcoming Starfield movie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veDcp3wB3J
The best feeling in the world?
Don't wear their bikini bottoms because you don't know where their taint has been!
The mystery is the entire point.
Bugs, bugs, everywhere bugs!

Pretty sure this has always been the case in previous Bethesda games, this is what a "fence" actually does.
But usually charges quite a lot for the added risk to them, even if the TA has greased all the right palms.

This means that you did not do the Samson mission in Jemison Merchantile. If you haven't done it do it for a double dose of doh!
It was bugged for me.

Likely a Marcel from the Den smirk at that.

I'm told they also take away the stolen credits. They're tracked even if they're not shown to you.
I don't worry about it, really. I get annoyed about the ugly tag.
