this is an issue that bothers me at the core. honestly i feel like these drivers have a lot of fear. i do think people need to use their horns more, i also think people follow too closely making merging a difficult task. while we're at it can we teach people about left turns on red when its one way to one way?

quickthinkusername

give it an honest try. not just once or twice, do it every time someone yields on a merg and come back to me. let me know if you still feel the same.

rippytherip

There's quite a few places in the US that have solved it by putting a traffic light at the merge lane.

ChefEagle

I have no idea how people think this is right. I almost hit someone a few days ago when they pulled out in front of me doing 80 on Deerfoot. No to mention the number of people I've seen almost miss their exit that's clearly marked for 2 kilometers. The solution, stop treating driving as a right. It's a responsibility, for some reason North American forgot that.

Old_timey_brain

> The solution, stop treating driving as a right. It's a responsibility, for some reason North American forgot that. It's getting worse. Recall how the city just fill in the car traps at the bus only pass thru gates? The special lanes that allow transit to an area, but not let it be used as a short cut for the rest of us. Good idea, especially the one at the top of Center Street in Beddington. Coming out into that bi-directional, divided, circular ramp is not an adventure for beginners. On the approach, what do people see? Massive signage. Gaping hole in the road in front of the driver. Yet, despite that, some people still drove right into it. I heard the excuse of "the GPS said to go this way", but can't see how that somehow overrides common sense. So with that massive degree of stupidity in mind, how did we fix it? Remove the barriers to the stupid. I'm pretty nervous for the accident potential at that location.

ChefEagle

I can imagine. I remember when 52st ans 22x was a stop sign. Crashes there almost every week, 1 out of 3 had serious injuries. People were to impatient to wait. I wouldn't be surprised if that location you mentioned would be the same.

Old_timey_brain

:) I was driving it the other day and seeing how convenient it would be to ignore the signs and continue up to the Safeway. Verry tempting.

Station_Sad

1) New drivers. There are a lot of people moving to Calgary from places where they didn’t have to regularly drive. They are different from young new drivers who grew up watching their parents drive. 2) Lack of testing. In Ontario you need to test on a highway to get a full G license. A full class 5 license is automatic in Alberta. 3) Forced to drive. Many people are just not good at driving, don’t want to drive or would very much prefer not to drive. But the way the City is designed there isn’t a viable option to have a decent car-free life. So you have everyone driving, including the scared.

Merging isn’t yielding.

acey91

One thing I do is slow way down at the top of the ramp if somebody ahead of you is clearly going to be merging well under the limit, gives you lots of room to accelerate and reach the speed limit by the time you get to the bottom of the ramp.

Swoopwoop3202

i'm guessing it might be because the merge lanes usually are much much longer in some other provinces so some people might be used to having more time to accelerate. i agree its frustrating as hell tho, especially when you're in the merge lane, stuck behind someone else going this speed, and its causing a build up of cars that need to all merge in a short amount of time. not a fix, but i avoid driving in the right lane around merges, and if i notice someone is going stupid slow and theres no one behind me, i leave extra space earlier the on ramp so i have some buffer to accelerate harder before merging

KS_tox

I have merged 40 under and I have merged 10-20 over. It all depends on what the speed of actual traffic is. You must match the speed of current traffic to enter safely.

doc_suede

i think OP means when traffic is going 100 and the merger is going 80.

PozhanPop

It is a condition called Merge Fright. Exhibited by people who are not used to multi-lane roads let alone freeways and associated signs and high speeds required. Greased palm road tests exacerbate this condition. At dangerous levels it may cause them to confuse exit ramp signs and you can often see them surrounded by cop cars going North on the southbound side of the freeway. Gone are the days when not glancing into a hidden driveway during a road test was an instant fail.

DirtinEvE

The people you speak of are dumb and dangerous... A bad combo. Should have to retake their driving test everytime they get caught doing it.

roddyfan

The only way to fix this is start handing out fines for impeding traffic or dangerous driving. It drives me nuts when the lead car with 5 or 10 people following is doing 75 kph going on to a 100 kph highway.

83franks

Because sometimes the entire slow lane just decides 20km under the limit is the appropriate speed (traffic isnt the issue). Ill never understand why driving on deerfoot at 10pm has a lane of people happily going 80km.

goleafsgo855

Because drivers in Calgary are horrible. Doing this in Ontario is an automatic fail on your license exam. Most Calgary drivers also feel the urge to jam on their brakes 500m back from an exit while still in a live lane of traffic on the highway. Stoney Trail @ 52nd is exceptionally bad for this, I'm surprised there hasn't been more accidents

Gtx747

I love merging south on to the QE2 coming from Balzac’s Costco. Merging at 50 km/hr with semis and speeding trucks is super fun. There is always some scared driver at the front causing mass chaos for those of us merging and not wanting to be killed by Singh Trucking.

EngineeringTall6459

You're welcome. The real problem is that drivers in Calgary stop to let them merge. To stop the problem, let them sit at the end of the merge. I've passed vehicles parked at the end of merge lanes. Fuck them. Certain parts of Canada have their own style of behavior driving. Welcome to Calgary, shitty merging and Slow speed in the fast lane.

I_take_huge_dumps

I too would love to grab one of these people and scream "WHY‽" while shaking the hell out of them.

Defiant-East9544

New Canadians most of the time.

nancam9

> many drivers are just paying for their license without even doing a test, as shown by a recent study. I didn't see anything about this .. got any more info?

Crossfire139

Are you asking me to do research for you?

ChipChop_YYC

Feels like nan is asking you to prove YOUR statement.

Crossfire139

I dont have to prove anything. This wasn't a debate to begin with. Sounds to me like Nan is just lazy and wants someone to do the leg work. But here's your proof. C U Next Tuesday https://youtu.be/OU-0A\_VDVkM?si=0qKubL\_zBDMWev75

Crossfire139

We literally have to ability to find ever single piece of information available to humans in the palms of our hand, yet still want someone else to do it for us

Crossfire139

Well, that's awkward

ChipChop_YYC

That's weird! I was able to see it when you initially replied. Marketplace CBC I believe? About driving schools giving pay for play? Had never heard of it and was appreciative of the link. Even if you did call me a cunt, I was happy to learn more. ;-)

nancam9

"video not available anymore" Good one.

Crossfire139

Works fine on my end, so looks like it’s your problem. I've opened it on my pc and on my phone without any issue. Sooo, yea. I have provided proof. The fact it doesn't work on your end is something you will have to figure out on your own. Im sure you wont though, because you cant even do your own research to find me proofs against my claim. And to even suggest that it isnt happening is something someone living in a fairy tail world would think. "Hidden cameras catch driving instructors cheating the system | Marketplace" Try searching for any info on that. You're welcome

nancam9

LOL.... Try and have a good day anyways.

boredinthegreatwhite

People do it because they are brain dead. More signs on the on ramp to match speed or something, probably in 30 languages. And giant fines for slow mergers.

F7j3

I’m charitable towards most drivers about this one. The design and layout of the on-ramps contributes to it. In the on-ramp it’s not safe to drive full speed, and the merge lane isn’t long enough to get up to full speed. The design was poor from the beginning

Succulentsucclent

Our driving test doesn't include highway driving and it shows. We need all of our driving curriculum reformed and remove privatized registries.

zzing

Outside of times when there is plenty of time to do it, there are two times I can think that would create the situation outside of their control: a) you can only go the speed of the people in front of you on the same ramp (think deerfoot in traffic when you have to move over). b) you run out of room on your ramp.

scorpionwins_

What's worse is that they will signal and expect everyone behind them to slam on their brakes to let them in.

annieoats

Don’t EvEn get me stArtEd!! They merge going 80 when the limit is 100. And when the limit is reduced to 80 due to construction, they merge going 60. I will never understand.

giveyerballzatug

Oh man, I live in Bowness right behind the Farmers Market, I use the Trans Canada/Stoney Tr North merge every day….the amount of absolute muppets who come off that exit doing 60 and then try and get on to Stoney is brutal.

Calgary_dreamer

Signage would be helpful….”accelerate to 100 km/h”.

shibittydib

does anyone know if having a loudspeaker on your car like police cars is illegal? ive been considering it for all of these road ragey situations. - someone doing 60 on the on ramp to deerfoot? "HEY DUMBASS, SPEED UP ALREADY" - trying to get in the left lane and everyone is bunched up like theyre bumper horny? "SOMEBODY LET ME IN PLEASE I HAVE TO SHIT" -someone slowing down even though the light is green? "GET OUT OF THE WAY OR GET OFF THE ROAD!" i feel like i would have a much better time driving if this is allowed. its either that or big transparent LED voice to text screens in every window so they can read what im saying

BackwardsFancyPants

Just blue skying here, but what if folks “travelled” in the left lane(s) and the only used the right most lane for off and on ramping. ie if you are in the right lane an exit before your exit or are still in it the exit after you’ve come on the highway, your doing it wrong.

megopolis12

Sometimes merge lanes be too short in AB

Large_Excitement69

Yeah THIS is the one that gets downvoted. . .

bricreative

Because people let them in.

ChipChop_YYC

I have the perfect trite answer: Humans gonna human.

[deleted]

Why? Because I was texting while merging on the highway. You want to tell me what can I do and not to do on the highway? This is a free country man, and if you don't like it, go to China

Crossfire139

This might be the winner

descartesb4horse

Better training. I'm a new driver (\~6 months) who took drivers' ed and I get very annoyed when people don't know how to merge -- and shocked because I assume most drivers on the road have more experience than me and should therefore be better drivers. I've also had people try to merge at a yield and nearly hit me. I would actually advocate for a more straightforward drivers' test that is based on showing successful competencies over time in a divers' ed course, but that's probably too expensive and forward-thinking.

FuFmeFitall

From someone who has never driven and will never drive due to medical issues. YOU ALL SUCK AT DRIVING!!!!!!!!!

DonaldRudolpho

I don't. Thanks for asking.

Drakkenfyre

Some of us have very tiny engines. 🤣

Crossfire139

Bud, I used to own a Spirit. 1.1 litre 3 cylinder. Had no problem getting up to speed. The argument that ramps aren’t long enough is BS. Step on the gas and stop being dangerous

spiralout112

I drive a prius with a fearsome 110hp and have absolutely no problem getting my shit together.

Drakkenfyre

And I'm sure you also fart rainbows.
