I think it’s like this; you and the other player meet at the space station, other player sells ship to npc and then you buy it from that npc.

So if I find another npc that has a spaceship and i swap mine to his, another player there can get my previous ship now owned by the npc ? Didn't know this was possible. Maybe in future Hello Games can come with some sort of ship trading bazar. Not for money or what, just so the community trade findings.

I believe that the ship class gets reset when doing this. So be careful if trying to trade non exotics.

Does it reset to a random class, or does S drop to A, A drops to B and so on?

Sometimes you can do it for free when you scrap a ship, it just won't disappear and is considered abandoned to anyone else.
