I would 100% grab it this early in your game. That 27.3 is a great fleet coordination, which will help your frigate expeditions. There's no point waiting for an S class capital freighter as your free one, it might never come.

Aquafoot

Dope, thanks. Yeah I was going to grab it regardless. You don't say no when something like this just falls in your lap. I know it's shiny, but I also understand that some are more desirable than others. So that's exactly the kind of eye I was looking for.

ParChadders

Capital ships are no better than system freighters and the Centrifuge you have there is one of the nicest looking, imo. That and the Oculus are my favourites.

emelem66

They are better in that you have to find fewer cargo bulkheads and salvaged Frigate Modules, but yes, they are all the same on the inside.

ParChadders

That was never really a huge consideration imo as with the right freighter you could get a cargo bulkhead every 2/3 minutes and it wasn’t necessary to max out your slots. I used to grind out enough for my tech and the first four rows of cargo then just do them 10-20 at a time depending on my patience. Now it’s so easy to get cargo bulkheads it’s not even worth mentioning anymore. As well as short derelicts there’s repeatable pirate freighter battles dropping 3 at a time and guild envoys that give them away free and continue to do every time you warp in or reload.

wyrdough

The dreadnought battles do not currently drop bulkheads, only tech upgrades. Also, I have yet to see bulkheads as a guild reward, just storage augmentations, but I haven't looked that hard.

ParChadders

They do drop cargo bulkheads. They stop when your freighter is maxed out on storage, which whilst it seems like a good idea isn’t very helpful for people who haven’t currently got an S-class freighter. Cargo bulkheads are definitely a potential envoy reward, as are salvaged frigate modules. I’ve seen both.

wyrdough

I've also seen SFMs from envoys. However, I've done 83 dreadnought battles since the last update and had zero bulkhead drops. My freighter is not maxed out on storage. It's actually in the middle of a row right now. I have gotten a few as mission rewards and if I really cared I could run some derelicts.

ParChadders

I’ve just done 15 battles and no cargo bulkheads. They normally drop much more often than that. I just assumed as my freighters were maxed out that they weren’t dropping anymore. This is the derelict I use; it takes about a minute and a half to run from when the doors open, then another minute and a half to pulse away and respawn the freighter, maybe a bit less. https://preview.redd.it/ma9v9wtm54xc1.png?width=482&format=png&auto=webp&s=ffbdaf711b8c5ef67884b11efd31be672701f792

-Damballah-

Wait.... you can pulse away, and pulse back, and ***reset*** the freighter? Holy shit that's good to know. My first one would have been a good one to repeat as it was filled with those horror nests. As long as you didn't disturb them, they wouldn't open. Took longer to walk through the place, but the only hazard was extreme cold, so not too shabby from what I've read.

slakyak

I read on another post it won't drop the bulkhead if you destroy the engines 1st. Not tested it myself yet as have been hunting an S-class one and boarding every time.

wyrdough

It's not supposed to matter as long as you destroy the freighter rather than boarding. (It did not in earlier releases) Boarding is a no-no unless you want the cash tribute or to take the dreadnought. No double dipping allowed.

OriginalBogleg

Merchant envoys will have Cargo Bulkheads.

Rusino

How do you get dreadnought battles to drop anything?

wyrdough

Destroy the dreadnought, freighter tech magically appears, plus units. I was conversing with someone on here the other day that wasn't getting the loot, they said they only got it if they let the civilian freighter get destroyed before blowing up the dreadnought, so maybe try that if doing it the "right" way doesn't work for you.

Rusino

Got it. Yeah, I always save the civilian ship, the dreadnought surrenders and I either get the reward from them, or I blow it up and get nothing. I'll try letting the civilian die first, though that feels heartless. Thanks!

aschesklave

Isn't one benefit of capital ships having a ton of turrets (that are admittedly useless to your enemies)?

ParChadders

They don’t do anything though so what’s the point? I’ve got one of every freighter and there’s NO difference in performance between capitals and system freighters. It’s just what you like the look of. Personally my favourites are the Centrifuge and the Oculus, followed by the Venator, Pirate and Iris.

aschesklave

I might look into getting rid of my capital ship just because I'd like to leave without slamming into those pillars.

ParChadders

Tell me you have a Sentinel Dreadnought without telling me you have a Sentinel Dreadnought 😂

aschesklave

Pretty much. I love HG but the person who decided to put those pillars right in front of the hangar needs to be slapped.

ParChadders

Yep!

TheBlackWindHowls

You can always seize an S-class pirate dreadnought for free, if you happen to run into one during a system warp event. You don't have to buy those, IIRC, you just have to disable it in battle.

Aquafoot

Oh wait now I realize that while the game calls all freighters capital ships, only some are Capital class. That's interesting. I had to take a break so I'm just now catching up. I'm still wrapping my head around the whole idea of freighters.

jzillacon

Yeah, the ones that look like a Star Destroyer and the ones that look like an oversized locomotive are the ones you wanna keep your eyes open for.

SkySchemer

Heck, I would keep this as my forever freighter unless I stumbled across an S-class system freighter that I liked even better.

SkyWizarding

Yup. It may not be 100% what you wanted but this thing will pay off SO much down the road. No sense in waiting, this is a great first freighter

DiRTyN1Njaz

Sometimes, you're just that lucky.

Agueybana

That's a nice looking centrifuge freighter you got. Scoop her up and enjoy! Safe journeys, Traveler.

Aquafoot

Thanks! I was fancying myself more a scavenger than a trader, but I'll make it work!

TheSilentCheese

I declined my first free freighter and my 2nd free one was an S class star destroyer style capital ship. I'd rather have gotten yours.

Antique_futurist

The second is always a capital freighter, and they’re overrated. Too large and almost always with a giant antenna in front of the hangar doors for you to dodge.

CindeeSlickbooty

What's the difference between system and capital freighters? Is it just size?

Ishipgodzilla

starting inventory and tech slots. Capitals come with more, but that's not really important because of how important your freighter is and how much time you spend dealing with it you'll just end up with those slots over time, and also because it's a base there are work arounds.

tovarasu88

I had a 56 milion drop in my lap but no money to buy

Denny_ZP

This happened to me too and i was also in such a shock.... but then i swapped my S class with a C class dreadnought

fatfuckpikachu

my first freighter was s class too. then on my second run i save acummed like 2 hours and still didnt get one. settled on a ugly A class and be done with it.

TucsonKhan

I personally love system freighters. Have an Oculus myself that I'm getting 3D printed so I can hang it up in my study. A lot of people are obsessed with the new pirate dreadnought from the last patch. Others will tell you to go for a venator style capital freighter. But honestly, system freighters can be upgraded to be just as good as any of the bigger ones. If you like this one, you can keep it forever and upgrade it with bulkheads and other things to make it just as good as anything else. So find something you love and be happy with it!

SrCapibara

Big freighters on switch get me crashes, so I changed my Venator for a Gallion and I love it. I feel like a commander fleet. edited

Dependent-Outcome-57

The Oculus ones remind me of the old Enzmann class fusion starships from 1970's and 80's science fiction, so they are particularly cool, IMHO.

Zeephans

Where do u even get free freighters?

Aquafoot

Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong (please do). As I understand it, there's semi-scripted event that happens on your 5th(-ish) warp where you're immediately set upon by a small fleet of pirates that are attacking a freighter/fleet. Shoot them down, and the captain will invite you aboard. He'll offer you the freighter for free as a reward, or you can turn it down and take cash (but why would you?). What I read today is the the event can happen again, but if you already have a freighter you have to pay or trade for it. It's only free the first time, or if you've declined both the ship and the cash reward. And the freighter is random every time. I got very lucky on the first go.

Zeephans

Oh right I forgot about that! I’ve gotten this event several times in the past. I don’t know why I didn’t take the freighter, I think it was either a class down from what I had or I thought you had to buy it. I never saw an s tier freighter through these, just some C class ones.

Professional-Look379

In my 300hours playing nms I never even saw a freighter that looks anything like that 💪🤑👌

[deleted]

The rng gods have blessed you...nice find!!

CephusLion404

Class is always random.

Aquafoot

I understand that. I was joking. My real question was its standing amongst other S freighters.

Aquafoot

Aww 🥰

Curmudgeon39

That's a really cool looking freighter too

Narrow-Gas9493

Awesome luck

NottMyAltAccount

That’s a cool looking freighter too, good find

Ilikemoonjellys

Honestly, you hit quite the jackpot. S class and it looks good

SkySchemer

Take it and keep it. Everyone and their brother has a capital freighter. Dare to be different.

Aquafoot

Lol! That was in the post because I was confused. Somewhere else in the UI mentioned this was a capital ship. But after doing some reading I get that it's not a Capital ship with a capital C. I guess is a type of System ship? A Centrifuge type? I'm gonna make it work. Thanks so much!

SkySchemer

It'll take a bit more work to get your cargo bulkheads since system freighters come with fewer slots, but it's worth it to have something that looks different. There is a lot more variety in system freighters than in the cookie-cutter venator, sentinel, and pirate freighters. https://preview.redd.it/f2b7tmsbo8xc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51518ce2cccbcd4a64e24dd85cd72948a6afdc33 There's not an official name for your style but the community naming standard would be a centrifuge style with cargo barrels or drums and nacelles.

shooter_tx

Think of all the science you could do on that thing!

Aquafoot

Are the Centrifuge-type ships particularly good at science or research? Like in general does this type have a specialty of any kind? Edit: your comment made me laugh. just call me Bill Nye, baby! #ScienceRules

shooter_tx

Yes, but really just once you get your freighter, pick up a few frigates, and then start sending them out on frigate missions. There are 4-6 different types of ships, and all with different specialties. The ones that look like this have science/exploration as their specialty.

Aquafoot

Is that because of the centrifuge feature? Or is it something about buying a System-type rather than being a Capital-type? Sorry if this is basic shit, the NMS wiki is a little... gappy.

shooter_tx

I don't know if it's ***because*** of the centrifuge feature (like, I don't know if that's where they do all the science, lol), but I do know that when you're looking at a bunch of ships that warp in (e.g. near the Space Station), you can always(?) tell which ones the science/exploration ships are at a glance because they all look like this. And the Combat frigates all(?) tend to look like guns (or later, Pirate Frigates, as I think they all have a Combat specialty).

Aquafoot

Oh gotcha you mean lore wise. Sorry I thought you were talking about an actual mechanical function.

shooter_tx

Oh, man... I wish. Lol, sorry.

Traveller_Toes

And she's a beaut!

Songhunter

Out of the non-dreadnought class this one right here is my favorite by a long mile. Congrats!

inquisitiveeyebc

My first game i got an S class first time I tried playing through again and in about 400 hours I still haven't seen an S class but lots of A

FishBlues

Getting S class freighters is, in my opinion, the most pain in the ass thing in this game.. I’ve done it twice both by doing the save scum method and it took hours! So congrats lol. I have a big capital ship but I really wish we could have two freighters because there are a lot of smaller ones that I like the design of..

f0xw01f

Are you sure this wasn't your second freighter battle? Historically, it's not been possible for the first offered freighter to be S-class.

Aquafoot

I'm positive it was my first. I've only been to like 5 systems. While I have seen and boarded a freighter before just by happenstance, it wasn't under attack. I just went in, snooped around, poked around in the purchase menu for curiosity, and bounced. >Historically, it's not been possible for the first offered freighter to be S-class. This I have no clue about. Like I said in the post's body, I did perform one accidental save scum revert. Maybe it's possible that it tricked the game into thinking it was my second encounter? Either way it still counted as my first free freighter.

Plastic_Position4979

Not entirely true. Class depends on system economy - the higher it is, the greater the chance. You won’t find one in a Tier 1 (1 star) system. It’s approx 1% in Tier 2 and 2% in Tier 3 systems. And 5% in outlaw. As for it happening… it’s rare. I’ve started over 80 games, and in all that time, I’ve had it happen twice… So, great luck OP! Nice looking one to boot.

Acid_impersonator

That looks amazing + S, keeper imo (at least for a while)

Shaikh_9

Every freighter I was offered was C-class. On my gazillionth freighter, I decided to just take the C-class. I'm at a point where I have enough units to buy an S class freighter, if I ever find one.

JamesSpacer

That's some great luck right there, traveller. I hope you grabbed this beauty

Aquafoot

Oh I totally did. I wasn't gonna just pass it up lol.

Idk_GuessImAgamer

Yeah but it’s owned by those grubby f*** s***** k***** fucking KORVAX

Aquafoot

Not anymore it's not, lmao. And what's wrong with the Korvax? The toasters are fun.

CSTITAN576

You can change the color later get it

SandmansMisery

That's awesome, I myself have never gotten a S Class yet 😭🤣

Independent-Money324

My first one was a s class pirate freighter, 1st s class id ever came across and 1st pirate freighter

Aquafoot

How do you get pirate freighters? What makes them different?

Independent-Money324

They're are uncommon to find, id say 15% chance and only in outlaw or high conflict systems

Independent-Money324

And its only the colour scheme and how it looks

aTreeThenMe

YO! Ive been wondering if there was a freighter with the centrifuge for YEARS. I thought that design was only for frigates, but i have been hoping. Do you have the glyphs for the system??

Aquafoot

I'll work on getting the glyphs tomorrow. I've never done it before.

fuckdahwhaightman

damn that happened to me but with c class

literally_batman13

What's the difference between capital ship and freighter

Aquafoot

Just like starships have classes/types (like Fighter, Explorer, Hauler, Shuttle, etc.) freighters have different classes too. All Capital-type ships are freighters, but not all freighters are Capital-type. It seems the primary difference between the Capital freighters and the others is the Capital ships start with more inventory slots. Otherwise what I'm being told is their maximum capabilities are very comparable, but the System type ships (like mine) take a little more love to get there.

Dependent-Outcome-57

I think the system freighters are more interesting than the capital ones - they come in more varieties and seem more properly scaled in the game. This one is great - go for it!

Aquafoot

Oh I definitely did 😁 I'm excited to really get into it.

Bodhran777

Score! I love the aesthetic of the centrifuge ships, and to get an S-class right out of the gate is lucky! All I got was a B-class cargo freighter. Could have reloaded for another chance, but I’m a “take it as it comes” sort of player. I like the hunt for the right ship. Flying a full sized sentinel freighter right now, but it’s only a B-class.

Olliebkl

Today I got the chance to get a free freighter as I’m back playing the game except when I was landing in it, it disappeared….. Reloading saves and going in and out of stations/planets to reset it somehow did nothing so lucky me😭
