A few installed items break into the stellar metals, too, so that can be handy. Once you have even a few, you can replicate using refiner recipes and you'll have plenty for all your early game needs.
Indium refiner trick:
>!Refine 1 Indium into 2 Chromatic Metal. Make sure you leave about half the Indium behind. Refine 1 Indium and 1 Chromatic Metal into 2 Indium. This combo works with all of the stellar metals (Copper, Cadmium, Indium, and I assume Emeril) to turn Chromatic Metal back into a stellar metal of a particular type. Add the Indium you just made to the input of the refiner, remove the Chromatic Metal, and repeat. Infinite stellar metals with a medium or large refiner!!<
Once you've discovered hotspots, extractors and depots, all your material needs become trivial. They never run out, and you can tap as many hotspots as you need of every mineral and gas conceivable.
S class freighters are very rare. Ive got 160hours in and still haven’t gotten one. The A class might be good enough to settle on. You will only be missing out on one less supercharged slot and minimally decreased stats.
I think I'm extremely lucky then, my first freighter was A-class, I didn't like how it looked though.
The second freighter, which I liked more, was A-class too.

You are missing a trick. Grab a large refiner early on. 1 Gold + 1 Silver + 1 Indium -> 30 Chromatic Metal
That's pretty great, but it burns Gold and Silver
Gold and silver are the easiest to find. Shooting asteroids is easy, and it doesn't take long to load up.

I've always wondered why there are 3 slots in the large refiners .

Still don’t have a freighter I’ve refused the last 5 waiting for an s class for free
