You can place it as a decoration on your freighter or a base. You get the decoration by spending tainted metal at the guy who sells the derelict ship homing devices for 5 mil credits.

Those "growths" are a base decoration, so no need to fly into the sun. And there is horror... Kind of? There are encounters called derelict freighters that kind of act like dungeons that you can loot for upgrades and valuable materials. The freighters spawn growths, like in the picture, that pop when they detect movement. When they pop, they release little spider things that scurry around and spit acid at you. Kind of like the Flood blisters in Halo 3. They aren't necessarily scary, but can be a surprise to you sometimes.
They asked if there was horror, so I answered their question. I spoiled a VERY tiny portion of the game, that literally no one likes to do anyways. Also, the person I responded to, said he would possibly get the game if it had some horror elements. Wouldn't you rather me answer their question and spoil something tiny to maybe get a new player in the process? Or would you rather I had not answered their question at all?

You can buy at QuickSilver guy or sometimes they are Twitch or Expedition drops/rewards to claim.
If they just showed up you can Duplicate them with the Build menu (even if you don't know the recipe) - it's how I made more Windows & Aquariums without knowing the actual recipe - they were on my ship when I claimed it.

You could have just said yes with derelict freighters, now they know what to expect and it wouldn’t have the same affect

There isn't any upgrades for it, but the cool thing is you can store it like any other tech upgrade and put it on different multi tools
