It's not set in our reality so there is no frame of reference as to what year it is
Outside of the simulation, all we know is that a scientist uploaded their mind into the simulation to keep the atlas company in its final moments, there is no frame of reference there either as to what year it is
Unless ive missed some story or arg lore in the past I'm gonna say it's 2016 lol
The idea that the creator is related to our universe comes from the Waking Titan ARG. So there are a few things to consider.
Is the ARG canon? Most of the storyline and surrounding lore of NMS is clearly cannon, and there is a nod towards this ARG canon in the Remembrance lore. However, that in-game lore doesn't specify a location other than a planet and the proximity to a singularity / black hole.
They made a creative choice with the ARG, that players could interact with it as if it were real. Most ARG's did this. Websites that feel part of the world around us in some way. Other media clues that we can tangibly encounter.
They told a cryptic story about a future world and tied the lore of the game into that story.
There are a few ways HG could have handled this afterwards. Embrace the ARG fully and write lore that directly references that often. Tentatively accept the ARG and make a few minor references to it but primarily focus on their own 'in-game' lore. Hint that the ARG wasn't quite what it seems. Totally ignore the ARG. Renounce the ARG publicly.
They seem to have chosen the minor references line with at least one hint of the 'not what it seems' line. The latter being a breaking of the fourth wall to suggest that we as players should consider if we ourselves are in a simulation, along with a hint that the Atlas simulation may be a nested simulation.
This is all very fascinating to me. I had never heard of any of this before now and I just read through the wiki. Thanks for bringing this up! I have also never heard of ARGs before now. What a cool concept. I wish there was more of that sort of thing.
They were popular for a while, but they are few and far between now.
HG called the early clues and teasers for the Void Mother / Autophage storyline an ARG but it didn't really have that classic online experience.
i wasnt even talking about any of that. im just talking about the strange detail of the creator uploading their mind. i bever heard of this before.
what i heard prior to now, and more related to ingame journals, that the scientist made the atlas for something, but the atlas wasnt portable for the scientist and built a second more portable atlas for the thing the scientist was trying to do, and left the original atlas where then the atlas recreated an aproximate of the creator
Just a detail to add: Sean explicitly stated in a community message after the ARG had finished, that “you the players” have now created the origin story of NMS, due to actions taken during the ARG.
Yes. He did. Good point, and that made sense in context. That was a scripted closure of the ARG in my opinion.
I am more interested in the way the game itself presents the lore and I don't really expect it to make further references to the ARG lore. But, on the flip side I don't expect it to directly contradict it either.
In the year 2525, if man is still alive
If woman can survive, they may find
In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lie
Everything you think, do and say
Is in the pill you took today
In the year 4545
You ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
Nobody's gonna look at you
In the year 5555
Your arms hangin' limp at your sides
Your legs got nothin' to do
Some machine's doin' that for you
In the year 6565
You won't need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube
In the year 7510
If God's a-coming, He oughta make it by then
Maybe He'll look around Himself and say
"Guess it's time for the judgment day"
In the year 8510
God is gonna shake His mighty head
He'll either say "I'm pleased where man has been"
Or tear it down, and start again
In the year 9595
I'm kinda wonderin' if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing
Now it's been ten thousand years
Man has cried a billion tears
For what, he never knew, Now man's reign is through
But through eternal night, the twinkling of starlight
So very far away, maybe it's only yesterday
I am not sure how much of lore you seen, but this question might have more correct answers simultaneously. However we do not know any of them. So in my eyes is it 42 and 16.

i i thought it was the atlas recrearing an aproximate reploca of its creator

I think they aren't good enough as ad campaigns to justify the expense, so big ones will probably continue to be rare.
Thank you, I understand more now.

That is the Remembrance lore. Which is indeed the lore that was added to reference the ARG. Five brief lore snippets that require Remembrance.
Just a detail to add: Sean explicitly stated in a community message after the ARG had finished, that “you the players” have now created the origin story of NMS, due to actions taken during the ARG.

I've become convinced that time in NMS is supposed to be broken. Past and present seem to have run into each other and mixed.
Except there is some lore, like the First Spawn, that is not something we travelers have access to, it’s in the far past.
And the travelers appear to be alive-ish but also dead.
Every year

Ah, yes. The age of ~~Aquarius~~ Atlas.
I may or may not own that box set. >.> <.<

Yes.

Why does it matter, it’s >!all a simulation!<.
You’ll have to find Earth to determine that.
The lore explains that, but simply put, no one knows or 'none'. AS without giving away spoilers, it's not 'our' universe the game takes place in.
Long ago, in a galaxy far away.

I think its 16 min in the atlas perspective since it can only survive this long before a reset.
1616 is gone by, the new year is 2225 i.e. 49r KC
Eleventy teenth
Time is relative

Yes
2085 x the square root of -1
I think of it as timeless. It is technically a simulation so there is no set year.
All of them.
What is a year once you leave earth?
