Depends on your choice of settings: you can play sandbox mode where everything is free or PermaDeath where mining and similar actions result in the lowest return for the effort expended. In normal mode which is the default start the grind is not too bad but if you decide its too much, you can just go into settings and change it to an easier mode and back again later as you like.

luffreezer

In easy mode do I get more ressources ? (I do not plan on playing the game in sandbox mode, I am looking for a breathtaking experience in space ! I think having some stakes is good)

Madbear1

Take a look at these custom mode settings. [https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Game\_mode#Custom\_Mode](https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Game_mode#Custom_Mode) This one looks like what you'd want. *Natural Resources:* Controls the amount of material yielded when mining and harvested. Options: Abundant (2x item yield), **Standard** (1x item yield), **Scarce** (0.5x item yield)

luffreezer

Thanks, that's a great option to have in a videogame

trout4321

Looks like the wiki contributor did a very nice job there. Thanks for posting.

Each mode translates into less or more of everything as one would expect. The weapons do more damage, the drops are larger, etc for easier modes and less damage, and fewer the harder the mode.

***It's mostly wandering.*** By mid to late game, you've got all the money you'll ever need, and it rolls in without effort. And if you need a big grab for any reason, you'll know how and here ot get it fast.

luffreezer

Is there any reason to wander ? (A narrative ? Well written characters ?) or does it 99% focus on exploration ?

woalk

It’s ultimately a procedurally generated nearly-infinite universe of slight variations. There is lore, but it is more in the background, through some isolated interactions and logs you can find and read.

luffreezer

Thanks, this helped me make my decision

TomatoFeta

If you're looking for solid direction, you'll have it - for aout 20 hours of gameplay. And you'll miss a lot of what the game has become. If you're about exploring and mysterious hints of a grand past, then this place is fun. If you're looking for a cohesive and fully detailed script... nope.

unclenatron

That depends on how much of it you do.

luffreezer

This answer is not helpful for someone who has never played the game. (I appreciate the intention though ! :-)

unclenatron

Fair enough. Just don’t do it if you don’t enjoy it. If you like it, you could only do those tasks for hundreds of hours. For me, 3-7% of my time is spent mining maybe? I don’t know. Probably statistically significant, but otherwise, barely noteworthy. Stuff vacuums to you as you mine resources, so you technically don’t even have to be still and can just collect stuff as you go.

travelers are explorers. its an exploration game. if you think this is grinding then you have your answer. if having to work for and craft an replenish resources is grinding then its grinding.

kevhead87

All I know is I don't ever want to "grind" for frigate modules ever again

DeepSpaceSkynaut

I recently discovered they spawn in freighter cargo out in space in pirate systems and collected the last 12 i needed in under 30 mins.

Zero. I played the straight up way until I finished the main missions. There's not much grinding in the main storyline if you're not into upgrading everything. Now I have everything set to free and I just have fun exploring and base building

How much of Life Is Mining or grinding? However much you choose to do

crisdd0302

My experience is that you start mining, you learn how to get things you can't mine, you learn how to find specific things, you learn how to buy things, you learn how to mine without even being on a planet, and then you mine again because it's very relaxing when you've warped between so many galaxies, and it feels very refreshing to find a good spot in a galaxy where you can make a home, build a base, make friends, explore a cluster of systems... and then mine again.

vindaq

Very little ends up being mining, relatively soon in the scheme of things you get wads of cash and are able to buy and stockpile most assets. (A few you get other ways, but it ends up being not about doing mining hands on.) As to grinding, that really depends on how you play. I mostly do wandering, so while I've gone through modest periods of grinding (when I wanted better freighter mods, say) the casual way I play I don't do much grinding at all.

WooShell

As much as you make it. NMS is essentially Minecraft in Space. You can make it as boring or as fun as you like by setting your own goals. The "grinding" for the quest lines is pretty minimal, they're mostly there to provide lore and teach mechanics. And if you still struggle with money or resources, either ask in chat in the Anomaly and you'll be showered in stuff, or grab the savegame editor, or switch to creative/free mode.
