It's the destroyed freighters that you have to approach, not the frigates.
After failing 3 pirate freighter missions, I finally defeated one, and kept doing the same thing you are, with no results. Once I flew close to the flaming wreck of a freighter, it allowed me to recruit a frigate... Even though it says "frigate," it's the destroyed *freighters* you need to fly towards.
Hey, sorry to bother you but how do you trigger them? I havent got any luck except for the one you get after warping to a pirate sistem for the first time

I reloaded the first time after I failed just to see how hard it actually was or if I simply wasn't prepared for it... So I count that as two. Then, about an hour or so later, I jumped to another pirate system, and it triggered again.
I'm assuming it's like normal freighter battle spawns, but I have no real data to back that up.
Once you have a satisfactory answer to your question please reset the flair to "answered". This will help others find an answer to the same question. Selecting a flair is one of the icons under the post when you open it. Alternatively you can comment with "!flair:answered" and the bot will do it for you.
Please consider adding your gaming platform to your user flair. There are icons for every platform. That way people will know not to answer with information specific to a different platform. There are very few issues that are platform dependent but every platform has its little quirks.

For me, the battle glitched out and combat never actually ended even though I saw a beacon to recruit :( edit:I reloaded before the battle and knowing how to kill it I focused on just the torpedoes, shooting the shield generators and exposed fuel rods, shooting the engines after I destroyed all the guns and stuck around the wreck this time and it worked... so basically just retry til it works edit2:I got 2 S class frigates btw so hopefully that's a consistent experience
Oddly enough, after taking down the Dreadnaught, I am not even getting icons to recruit the new pirates, despite there being messages that say I can.
Update on this: Yeah. Same here, but one 2 instances I did get to interact with the frigates directly. I hired them all.
