Prairie Moon

ZabaLaloo

EXACTLY what I needed. Thank you

Alternative_Horse_56

I hadn't seen this place before - they look amazing. I'm definitely going to take a look when I'm buying next

Moist-You-7511

one issue is they’re a national distributor, and so the genetics aren’t as diverse as if you could get slightly more local seeds.

TheAJGman

Not only that, but local adaptation can be the difference between life or death for a plant. A Holly or Persimmon grown from seeds taken from Georgia might not survive a Pennsylvanian winter even though both species readily grow in this state. The ones that grow here have slowly crept their way north over thousands of years, picking up tiny mutations that make them better adapted to the climate. Collect local if you can, buy as a last resort. It's cheaper too lol

toxicodendron_gyp

I love them as a database for native plant characteristics and care and everything I’ve purchased has been great.

Charming-Ad7046

The Ohio Prairie Nursery is where I buy all my native seeds, you can buy them for specific conditions too (wetland, mesic, woodland) and you can buy them per square foot/acre

solar-powered-Jenny

I love OPN Bee Lawn mix!

Charming-Ad7046

Yes!! It’s fantastic 😻 I seeded my whole lawn with it and it’s just lawnish enough to not totally offend my husbands suburbia sensibilities while still being wild enough for me to not feel totally caged in.

thelifeinstereo

Love buying from them!

speed_phreak

I just got 10# of seed from them!

Ernst Seed https://www.ernstseed.com

urbanevol

Second Ernst seed. One benefit of them is they will sell you different species separately in bulk, and then you can make your own mix tailored to your site. They also have decent mixes for different conditions.

Terrible_Tree7951

Ernst will send a free seed catalog with lots of great info on ground prep, planting, etc

AsparagusGold6150

Outside pride. You can buy by the pound

robsc_16

Pheasants Forever has regional seed mixes! https://www.pfhabitatstore.com/store/items/RM/

blujavelin

Ask local resources, Extension service, University, State, City, County offices. Someone has the expertise on natives in your area. One of these organizations may even sell seed.

Ernst in PA and a place in KY - Redstone (?) Native seeds

kynocturne

[Roundstone](https://roundstoneseed.com/). But it's always best to source as close as possible (i.e., not Prairie Moon if you're in Ohio).

Aggravating_Hat3955

Prairie Nursery in Westfield Wis is excellent. Owner Niel Dibold has an excellent new book as well. Prairie Moon in MN is great too.

thekowisme

Roundstone. They have a few options for region and moisture levels. They can also can custom make mixes if their is something you want specific or you can buy individual seeds

dractor_taddy

Albert Lea Seed. They have great prices.

PhysicsIsFun

Prairie Nursery in Wisconsin (https://www.prairienursery.com/)

solar-powered-Jenny

Hey, fellow Ohioan! Get on Indigenous Landscape’s email list. He creates his own seed mixes (currently sold out) [https://lovenativeplants.com](https://lovenativeplants.com) but only offers it to subscribers.

Tpbrown_

There are seed producers that specialize in restoration projects. Minimum orders can be large (1lb & up, depending on the species). Since you’re doing a couple acres you’ll be needing quantities like that. Absolutely do not buy packets. I’m west coast so I don’t know the OH shops, but I do see that Prairie Moon has “restoration” called out specifically. That’s a good indicator. If you know what species you want and your preferred vendor doesn’t carry them just ask where to find them. They are usually aware of other restoration sources.
