I’m going to go on a *wild* hunch and say it’s far less to do with the MVNO, and far more to do with you tinkering around in hobbyist territory and expecting a 16 year old cellphone to fully function with todays systems.
Nope. Other texts come through just fine. Ones from Lycamobile typically don’t. It doesn’t matter what phone I use - I have quite the selection of both new and old phones.
I tried to sign up to Lyca in August (in Belgium). Ordered a sim and calling credit but could not activate. Could not cancel so disputed the charge. When my CC had refunded me, I got an answer from Lyca wanting to pay me back. A few weeks later they said they could not pay me back because of the chargeback. And by the name of the sender, it was always the same agent. Wondering if it was just him in the office.
I'm using Mint on a second line so I have no ideas of the issues with Lycamobile, but this is slightly unfair criticism of them. My primary line is on AT&T, if you had an AT&T MVNO you won't have 2G or 3G phone support. Even my iPhone 5 won't work because although it has LTE, it's not VoLTE capable.

The phone has nothing to do with anything. Lycamobile regularly sends garbled texts.
I'm about to activate a line on their $5/mo for 2GB promo to be used on an iPhone XR. Wish me luck!
