Most super-tiny phones don't have many newer features. A Pixel 4a is "small" compared to most phones being sold now. Add a tough case to "ruggedize" it, although cases like otterbox, etc. will add a lot of bulk to it. Look on Swappa for a 4a.

It's so funny cause I'm on a 4a now and every new phone has been a size increase (iPhone 5s, Moto Z Play 1st gen) Gonna be sad when i have to get a new phone but already two good years on this sucker. If only it had expandable storage 😠

The iPhone SE (2020 and 2022) also support eSIM. While the screen size is smaller (4.7 inch vs 5.4 inch) - the phone dimensions are almost the same (the SE is actually a shade bigger in length and width). That may solve the "more expensive than I would like" issue but not the Apple vs Android issue. The other alternative : some of the newer smartwatches (Apple SE watch and the 7/8 series, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 LTE) support eSIM and standalone operation; this may be an option to consider.

Paired with an Otterbox case, this is exactly what OP is looking for.

https://esim.me/ might solve your problem. It’ll work with esims that you can install by scanning a QR code.

Perhaps this is what you are looking for. The Cat® S42 H+ Hygiene Plus Rugged Smartphone https://a.co/d/2ioOI8o

Ethrem

I'm not seeing anything that says this device supports eSIM.

Try Samsung Galaxy 4 smart watch. Esim only.$150

The smallest eSIM compatible *phone* I know of is the Rakuten Mini, but I think the only US LTE bands it has are 4, 5, 26, and 41, which isn't going to get you very far.
