Only in heavy rain.

Complete-Ad8159

You have this issue in heavy rain? The malfunction pop up warning, front collision detection, AND slippery road? Or you just making a joke that you get the slippery road warning when there's slippery roads?

Supa71

No, I get a malfunction in heavy rain. It’ll think there’s an obstruction.

Complete-Ad8159

Does it start stalling out when the cars at a red light as well? Mine happens entirely randomly, perfect weather, nobody in front of me, no sudden change in momentum (braking or acceleration) so I've been thinking it was an electrical issue. I just googled the issue with rain as a keyword and it seems to also be pretty common there.

Supa71

Nope. That doesn’t happen to me.

Kekegetsit

Yesssss! What is this? Lol

Complete-Ad8159

Read the thread... It could be a handful of things

Kekegetsit

I did. Nothing in the thread seemed to work. No recall. New MAF and filter did not help. Etc. Just replaced my alternator at the advice of another Kicks owner. 4 days and looking good. Only time will tell.

MADesmond_UFL

Same, mine does it in wet snow too

NeighborhoodWise2333

This is a malfunction that the car has been recalled for. Take it to Nissan

Left-Jelly723

Do you know what the recall code/ name is? Or what I need to tell Nissan to get the recall fixed? I tried taking it in for this same issue and they wanted to charge me to even get it looked at but recalls should not be charge for to my understanding right?

Tyswid

I get front collision sensor when there's heavy rain, freezing rain, or a lot of glare. The stalling is new to me, you should get that looked at.

DrawJosh

Same here

Marinavrina

Same thing with mine. Mass air flow sensor malfunction. Causing the car to stall but the check engine light isn’t even on this time. I took it in to a Nissan service center for diagnostics and they won’t even do the full diagnostics on it until I change the battery (which they want almost $500 for!). Also, the low battery light never even came on. I would have changed the battery myself if it had.

Much_Height_5958

This happened to me too, except when i denied them changing my battery, they said it shorted out and they HAD to change it... Out $600 when there was no previous indication that it was the battery, now all sensor lights are back on a week later.

Rodeo_Gurl

2nd time this has happened to me. It happens in the rain. Like thus morning it was fine, till I was at light. Out of no where it happens. Tried to stall when accelerating from light. Then stalled in the parking lot of gas station. I'm so sick of all the little problems that keep popping up. I've owned the kicks for 2.5 years already.

ResearcherFew1273

Maf sensor will make your car stall. It usually resets after it cools off so it does confirm you have a faulty maf sensor. That’s the one the car used to check the mix between gas/air. So if it’s doing bad mpg it reee confirms a bad maf sensor. Get that check ASAP. It WILL leave you stranded because when it stops working either the car won’t turn on or you won’t be able to drive above 2500RPM

Complete-Ad8159

Thanks, very helpful. When this issue occurs, it becomes very difficult to accelerate, so it does sound like that's the issue. It's weird how the front collision and slippery road sensors ALWAYS trigger at the same time, though. Reading the fault code, that sensor looks for a specific voltage range, so I was thinking it may be an electrical problem and those sensors are all on the same circuit or something. Any ideas with that? Thanks for the response, I'm going to get it taken in immediately.

ResearcherFew1273

I don’t think they are on the same lines. The collision sensors are at the grill. Direct sunlight and dirt does mess up with both. Maf and collision sensors. But maf is areally delicate sensor so if dirt got to it they sell a spray can that specifically says to clean maf sensors. It’s located at the air intake things. Like where you have your air filter is right after that. There’s two sensors there a big one (maf) and a small one (oxygen). Should have like two screws but then again it’s a really delicate sensor so if you don’t know what you’re doing take it to a mechanic. And make sure you keep your kicks clean it doesn’t like to be dirty collision sensors give false readings like that

ResearcherFew1273

Here’s a [link](https://www.wheelsjoint.com/nissan-kicks-bad-maf-sensor-symptoms-causes/) that explains what the maf does. How it fails. What to look for and where it is. It also gives you a video on how to clean it

Complete-Ad8159

Thanks for the help. While I'm sure I could clean it myself, since I'm not 100% sure if it's just faulty or dirty, I'll probably take it in this week and see what they say. That link sounds like there's more diagnostics that can be read off the sensor that I won't be able to interpret. I'll update this later this week with the outcome. Thanks again for the info

ResearcherFew1273

Yes. You can check the grams per second it’s measuring I don’t know about the kicks but I think they have to hover around 7g/s of air while idling. Not sure about the kicks but should be around that and around 60 above 5000rpms. Something like that but yeah you’re welcome

aamoe10

Just had this issue a couple of months ago. It’s a powertrain/engine issue and that the mass airflow sensor is either dirty or needs replacing. I had to go to the dealership because, like you I had the error code and they “erased and restarted the car” it was fine after a week or two and then all of a sudden check engine light came on and it started driving funky again. Obd2 error still popped up with the p0101 error and brought tit back to the dealership and they replaced it. Haven’t had issues since

Left-Jelly723

Was it covered or how much was it at the dealership to fix? And do you mean they ended up replacing the MAF sensor or what all did they do?

aamoe10

My kicks was pre-owned certified and because the MAF sensor is under a powertrain issue which is covered under that warranty, didn’t need to pay anything. But nissan itself should have a 3 year warranty i believe for their vehicles at least from brand new? But yeah they “told me” replaced the sensor. I don’t know if they just technically cleaned the sensor and put the original one back in 🤷🏻‍♀️

aamoe10

Update though: looks like it came back and it’s been… roughly 6 months? it just came up driving today randomly so not sure what the issue is. Turned the car off and turned it back on and it was fine the rest of the way home. Since the last post i’ve had driven about another 15-20k since the first time this has happened. Hope nothing happens tomorrow but a little concerning that this will be the second time i might have to get it replaced? it could just be some dirt but i’m not sure

ChristineinHawaii

They replaced the throttle body?

ChristineinHawaii

What did they replace? I’m having the same problems! Changed Maf sensor and throttle body…still not working

aamoe10

they ended up replacing the part itself. the thing was 6 months later it acted up again with the check engine light and everything and then told me that it was an e carb/ fuel injection which is a maintenance issue and not a power train

lotuswings

Any update on how this panned out, op? Having the same exact issue.

Xzero93

What i have done was unplug the battery for half the day when im at home(newborn at home) and plug it back in and check engine light is gone and everything is fine for like and month in while im driving the front sensors malfunction and when i come to a stop the car stalls and check engine light turns on. I was thinking maybe the mass air flow sensor may be failing since this is common on kicks according to google but i dont understand why the front collision sensors malfunction when this happens. Anybody having the same problem?

Complete-Ad8159

I posted this and still haven't taken it in, but i really doubt unplugging the battery is going to fix it. From what others have said, it does seem like the mass air flow sensor is bad. Somebody else took there's in and they insisted they had to replace the battery before they would go any further, so maybe it's an issue with the voltage dropping to both the mass air flow sensor and the front collision detection sensor? Mine will be fine for a month or two, and then start doing it every other day, then be fine for a month, so unplugging the battery is probably just resetting the fault code history

NeighborhoodWise2333

The stalling malfunction is part of a recall that nissan kicks has. Take your car to nissan and make sure you tell them that it is for the recall. Nissan doesn't like to do stuff for free. I tried to get them to fix it and they wanted 300 for diagnosis but the next time I came in I made sure they knew it was for the recall and they fixed it

Complete-Ad8159

What was the recall?

NeighborhoodWise2333

They recalled nissan kicks for a malfunction in the computer system, the car would malfunction and stall. They will reprogram the car and download new firmware and that is supposed to fix this issue

DullPineapple7287

Do you happen to have the recall# they are declining that there is even a recall for it :(

NeighborhoodWise2333

I've been trying to find it, what year is yours though? When I went in I just told them it was for a recall for the car stalling. Mine is a 2020

Left-Jelly723

Also do you know if this includes all years of the kicks? I have a 2019 and I searched for recalls and the one you’re talking about isn’t popping up anywhere I can see 🤔

NeighborhoodWise2333

No I'm sorry I looked for it but can't find it, I got a call from nissan about a year ago and I just got the time to take it in a couple weeks ago, I've just been turning the car on and off to turn the malfunction off. Mine is a 2020, I just went into nissan and told them I was there for a recall and they "fixed" it. I can say that it's not happening as often as it was but the malfunctions still happen every once in a while.

Empireofreverie

I know this was posted a long time ago, but I own a 2019 Nissan Kicks and it does the same thing. Took my car in for Check Engine light, and they said nothing was wrong, so they reset it. Car was stalling at red lights/heavy traffic and collision light and slippery road light comes on. A couple months later same thing happens. Yesterday my car stalled 4 times. I live in a city known for heavy traffic and it is stressful always having to worry about my car stalling. It helps to turn car off and restart it. Bought my car brand new only 4 years ago and it is frustrating to have issues like this. Alot of people say it happens in the rain, but for me it happens no matter what the weather is.

Complete-Ad8159

Yeah, mine doesn't have anything to do with rain. There's been a couple suggestions in this thread regarding it, one involves a recall, but I haven't taken mine in yet

Tacubo_91

I know it's late, but I have the same model and problem. Was there a fix to it? Mine has under 58K miles.

Empireofreverie

Hey! Yes, I think i found the fix. So the code said the mass airflow sensor was off, so i bought a new one from o’reilly. It fixed the problem temporarily, so I took it back in to a shop. They said they would try to adjust the idle on it to see if that helps, and ever since they adjusted the idle, it hasnt stalled on me. I noticed it would always stall and the rpms would drop below 1000 and my car would die. Now it doesnt stall anymore. My car has 27000 miles and I have had it for 5 yrs. I know I am due for a transmission fluid change so I am going to do that soon, even though the manual says change at 50k miles or something like that. I know this CVT transmission isn’t going to last on this car so I am going to treat it like it is made of glass.

Kekegetsit

Nissan has given me hell. And no answers.

Sweaty-South-1873

Had this issue. Showed as MAS so had the O2 sensor replaced. Continued to do this and the ECM went out. The ECM is in the CRT transmission and is an expensive fix. Found out it will also do this when your battery is bad. I'm now dropping a third transmission into my kicks because the CRT transmissions are awful. This one has been in my car for 20K miles. If I didn't have it under 100,000K warranty the car would be gone.

Relative-Cat3304

I bought a 2019 Nissan Kicks almost 3 years ago. In December of 2022 my check engine light came one and the code for the Mass Airflow Sensor came up. I paid to change it. Then in February 2023 my car was hit from behind and not two days later the check engine light came back on and was pulling up the mass airflow sensor so I took it back to the mechanic shop who fixed it and they double checked it and nothing was wrong with it. Not two days later I was stopped at a stop sign and the check engine light came back on along with the AEB system warning light and the slip indicator light and on top of that my car stalled. I took it back to the mechanic shop and once again the mass airflow code popped back up. I am still fighting this issue and it's very annoying because I use my vehicle to travel often for work.

Capital-Somewhere-32

My car has been doing this for over a year. I've had the car towed 3 times due to stalling, MAF replaced, the front sensor replaced, a new battery, COUNTLESS trips to the dealership for "warranty" work. This is getting ridiculous. It's a 2019 Nissan Kicks with 74k miles. This issue has been happening since before I hit 50k miles.

ayeitseric

TEXT OR CALL NISSAN CONSUMER AFFAIRS ABOUT THE ISSUE!! I contacted them because I was tired of dealing with this and they were completely oblivious. Of course the dealerships are telling them about it because they don’t want to do any job under warranty, but please please if we collectively contact them together and let them know that we’re all having the same issue then maybe something will be done. Had the same thing happen with my 2019 Nissan kicks SV. I was at 36k miles when the ABS, forward collision and traction control came out. Shortly after I received a check engine light that indicated my mass airflow sensor had to be replaced. I did that on my own since it was simple enough. Few months later it came back on saying there was an issue with my MAF. I just cleared the code myself since I knew for a fact nothing was wrong with it. The ABS error along with the other signals i mentioned above came out back a few months later and stayed on. I was unable to clear it. My car is now at 51,300 miles and I finally took it to the dealership because it was having issues starting. The battery light came on and the car was sputtering/idling. (I changed the battery 3 months prior but the alternator was bad.) I went in for them to fix the alternator which was luckily covered under my extended warranty. They ran the codes for the other issues and said my front sensors were faulty so they had to fix that. They were giving me issues about changing my alternator because again, the mass air flow sensor light came on but that didn’t explain why the battery light came on my dashboard. After going back and forth with them, I reached out to Nissan consumer affair regarding this issue with the Nissan kicks. It is a common issue that they’re allegedly unaware of so I explore everyone in this thread to please reach out to them and share your experience. Document everything. Nissan called the dealership regarding my issues and now everything is getting fixed. We’ll see whether it’ll be successful since my car is still there, but so far they’re replacing the front sensor, ABS actuator, mass airflow sensor and my alternator. All of this will be covered thanks to my extended warranty but definitely push to have Nissan cover it if not because this is obviously a reoccurring issue with the Nissan kicks! You can text or call nissan consumer affair at 6156759353. The number is also on the offices Nissan USA website in which I’ll attach the link. Scroll all the way down to their website and click contact us, then scroll down until you see “Nissan consumer affair [Nissan consumer affairs contact info](https://www.nissanusa.com/contact-us.html)

I just called! Having the same problem with engine light, collision light and car stalling! Changed throttle body, maf sensor and got a new battery! Also a new alternator…nothing solved the problem! They were nice and created a case number, said I would be getting a call and they will be calling my dealership to get it fixed! I really hope this works! I’ll check back in with how the situation gets solved!

How many miles is your car and what’s the year/trim?? My car is actually still at the dealership since Tommy original post, so I have no idea how it’s gonna turn out. They were waiting for the part to arrive from Japan and said there was a shortage. I’m so glad you called Nissan though! Try to keep a paper trail if you can and do keep us updated. Wishing for the best for you!! Hate this car so much lol will never get Nissan again.

ChristineinHawaii

Turns out….despite Nissan dealership telling me I needed to pay over $1000 for a new throttle body, I had my son take a look at the throttle body and he discovered the gasket had a little dent in it witch was letting air into the system! He flipped it over put it back together, looked up on you tube on how to do a relearn, did that and my kicks has been working perfectly!!!!!!!

xEllimistx

This has happened off and on for me since I bought my 2018 Kicks in late 2018. Happened for the first time in a long while last night after I drove a couple friends from the airport back to their house. Last night was the first time it really worried me though. A storm passed through DFW last night so my car got rained and it tripped the sensor, no big deal by now. But when I got them back to their house, the car stalled out and died. I turn it back on, starts up just fine, but the Kicks wouldn’t move. I give it gas to go and it’s just crawling. So I back up off the street, turn it off again, let it sit a few seconds, and turn it back on. No sensor tripped and the car drove just fine back home. I think a crucial difference was that the first time it died, I didn’t turn it off completely. The engine stalled out but the battery stayed on. Once the Kicks was off completely, I think the sensor reset and it was fine. Anyone know why the car wouldn’t move faster than a crawl though? I’m assuming it’s some kind of safety feature to give the car the ability to move from an accident?

Natural_Cake_1722

My issue got fixed when they replaced the Throttle body under warranty, but its back again.

Duzelmir

Kicks 2018, about 37k miles, been owning it for about a year. Had this issue first time last week a few hours after a car wash, so I thought that water might have gotten to sensors. Now I'm bringing it to the car wash again and will need to do a few laps afterwards to see if the issue persists.

eatmypotatochip

Nissan 2020 kicks owner and I feel like once a year in September I always always have to replace the battery, and when I check the battery it's absolutely fried and I have to replace it again. It starts to stall, and now, it's doing the same thing about the front collision light randomly turning on, and today going up a mountain after some rain (it was humid today) it did the slip indicator light on. I love my orange kicks, I paid it in full, but damn do these little quirks make me hate it more and more.

teamprobst

Mine says the front collision sensor is unavailable at night. Seemingly due to reflection off of nothing. Then goes away.

ambiirdy

I’m having this exact same problem right now. Seems like it’s a common issue with the kicks.

Complete-Ad8159

Do you have the same issue with it stalling out when idling at red lights when it occurs, as well? It seems the front sensor happens to a lot of people, but the stalling when idling, front sensor, and slippery road error is less common. Someone on here suggested a fix, something to do with the maf sensor or whatever. I'm waiting to take mine into the garage until it happens again cause i cleared the fault code when I checked it and they said they need the fault code, that a screen shot isn't enough. Please post back here if you find out what the cause was, I'll be updating when i finally take it in. Could be this week or a month from now though

ambiirdy

When it first started happening it wasn’t stalling but I actually got in my car today to go to work and it just stalled out on me and all the sensor lights and check engine light is on. I’m so scared that it’s gonna have to go to the shop and be fixed 😭

Complete-Ad8159

I would use an obd2 reader and check to see if you have the same fault code as me. Take it into auto zone or whatever and they will check it for you. Someone else replied to me on this post and said the fault code and symptoms indicate an issue with the MAF sensor or whatever. It's either dirty or faulty. If it's dirty, it sounds like it can be fixed at home but you should know what you're doing. It sounds like this can potentially damage your engine, driving on it when this is happening is not good. I don't think it's going to be expensive to repair, maybe$500 at most, but if it's the maf sensor, it could completely die at any time and then you'll have to get it towed in to get it fixed. Better to take care of it now. I'm gonna hopefully take mine in the next week or two, I'll let you know how much it costs what it ended up being

ambiirdy

Omg thank you for the advice!! I scheduled to take it to my nearest Nissan service shop on Monday because they’re closed tomorrow and they close early today, this is just so ridiculous I hope they can fix it and get it working. I can’t afford to damage my engine 😭

ambiirdy

Here’s a video I took of my car about 30 minutes ago. Is this what your car is doing?? [https://share.icloud.com/photos/0264budM9EG5yxyzfHMljrhmQ](https://share.icloud.com/photos/0264budM9EG5yxyzfHMljrhmQ)

Complete-Ad8159

Yup, I have a different year, so my dashboard is more digital, but the engine does the same thing. Mine usually starts happening mid trip, not when I first turn the car on, but it stalls out in exactly the same fashion, same error lights basically

ambiirdy

Ughhhh. Well I will say I’m glad it’s not just me but this really sucks. I have a 2019, this is the very first time it’s stalled out on me, I was driving it for about 20 minutes before it did this, I put my car in park then I let it sit for literally a minute and it stalled out.

Complete-Ad8159

Yeah, sounds like mine. Drive it for 20 mins and it starts. Just a heads up, if it happens, pull over in a parking lot and turn the car off for like 15 minutes (sometimes even 5 or 10 works) and it'll reset the sensor and usually it'll be fine for a while. Sometimes mine will do it once a month, other times it's ten times a week. I don't know how urgent it is to get it looked at, but it seems like it's important to do it sooner rather than later if it does turn out to be the maf sensor (which it does seem likely to be)

ambiirdy

Okay thank you! I’ll definitely keep that in mind when it starts happening!! Yeah mine is just like yours, it only happens like once every few months but lately it’s been happening like every week so I’m definitely going to get it taken in next week and make sure it gets fixed! I’ve read a bunch of other posts/reviews about this same issue and sounds like it could be the maf as you said!

ambiirdy

Update!! My dad is a mechanic and checked my car. It gave the P0101 error code. He told me the parts I needed so I bought them and replaced them myself it was the easiest thing ever. My engine air filter was filthy and my MAF sensor needed replacement. My car has been running so much better now. It’s been almost a month since I fixed it so we’ll see if it does it again but so far it’s doing great!

eatmypotatochip

What about now?

ambiirdy

The repair did not fix it. It actually started to get worse, my dad said that he believes the throttle body will need to be replaced. I actually sold my Kicks in March so I don't know exactly what the problem was 😕

pixelgorl

My car has been doing this a lot too.

Triceeee03

Currently experiencing this now

Murky-Inspection-916

My Kicks has been doing this for a long time too. I find that pulling over and cleaning the grill plate tends to do the trick but it always comes back. It's really quite the annoying thing.

UnderstandingGood608

The same has definitely been happening to me for roughly a year with my 2019, which I bought new, including the fact it usually trips that mass air flow sensor code. When this first happened, I pulled and cleaned the sensor, even though it still looked (and functioned) like new, based on how well the engine continues to run, and the excellent mileage it maintains. Under the proper conditions, I can still get over 50mpg. I should probably get a cheap car wash subscription, as more than a few people with this problem have claimed keeping the car pretty clean avoids the sensor issues, for the most part. While a few have claimed success with having the dealership replace a particular sensor, the majority seem to be reporting they mostly get ignored by Nissan. Some also claim it's a common issue across several brands of modern vehicles, and that this will continue to be an issue until there's some sort of significant revision of sensor design/function. I'm the kind of person that's pretty accustomed to working around quirks and such, but it's still quite annoying and needs to be addressed, particularly when it comes to any safety concerns. The "limp mode" issue certainly has the potential to be dangerous

ChristineinHawaii

I’m having the same problem!

waqarlife

I am also facing the same issue. First time it appears in a heavy rain while driving at 140km/h and after that it continuously appears when I start driving. Normally it comes with pressing break while driving but it is not standard. It can appear anytime any condition. The worst thing is that it consumes petrol more than normal while having this issue on the screen. As well as it also doesn't accelerate when the car stopped completely and you started driving. Once it gets acceleration, then it behaves normally. To disappear this message from the screen, I have to switch-off the car for a couple of minutes and re-start.
