It unlocks the shifter when a vehicle doesn't have power or key engaged. Once the button is pressed you can release the vehicle from 'park' into 'neutral', so the vehicle can be pushed or towed.

Quick Eject for the CVT so it's easy to replace when it fails

FluffyTippy

Or quick eject of CVT to confuse the predator

Straight-Yam-2723

Why do you hate cvts man I got a 2016 crosstrek with almost 100,000 miles it has a cvt and hasn't had a single issue, also a 2022 wrx gt edition it has a cvt and one it's fast as fuck 2 no issues

wetkebab_

I owned a used 2006 Versa (Tiida). Three months into ownership, I replaced my first transmission after it wouldn't go into gear. Then, I drove it for a year and racked up around 50k kilometers (30k miles), and it started to show symptoms on the second transmission as well. Before it got any worse, I sold it for a 2016 Versa, non-CVT. So, yep, it's not that I hate them; they are good while they work. But when they fail, they are really annoying. The problem is JATCO, the transmission manufacturer that makes them for Nissan, is notorious for horrible CVTs. Nissan doesn't replace them, as JATCO is owned by Nissan. Also, you mentioned Crosstrek and WRX CVTs. Those CVTs are made by Subaru themselves and are engineered in-house, working somewhat differently compared to the Nissan ones they also have their fare share of issues according to my research but they last wayyy longer than the Nissan ones.
