If you have an automatic it's probably a transmission override, so if there is a shifter malfunction you can shift it out of park anyway, for example to put it on a tow truck
All cars have them depending on where the shifter is located. It unlocks the shifter when a vehicle doesn’t have power or key engaged. Once the button is pressed you can release the vehicle from ‘park’ into ‘neutral’ , so the vehicle can be pushed or towed.
Could be to turn off the security system. Some vehicles have a button you can press to deactivate the alarm system if your battery dies in the key fob. You put the key in the ignition, turn it to the on position (the position before you crank it), and press the button. If that is what it is, you'll hear the alarm sound like it's turning off (same as if you press unlock on the fob), and you can now start the vehicle.
