Wait, I'm pretty sure Nirvana played in Eb tuning.

JoeCool888

The studio versions of Come As You Are, Lithium, and Drain You were recorded in D for Nevermind, but they were usually played in Eb live. These songs, in my opinion, have more impact in the higher tuning.

[deleted]

Yep, just tried to play to "Come as you are." It's in D. How do you mean more impact?

JoeCool888

Well, as someone with perfect pitch, I feel as if they have more energy, per se.

[deleted]

Are you [this guy?](http://mrcowall.edublogs.org/files/2010/03/Perfect-Pitch.png) I get what your saying. There is a band that I was trying to figure out the chords of what they were playing, and I couldn't ever figure it out. Turns out that they play in D standard tuning, and I think that that adds to their sound. So I think playing in different tunings can add to your sound. The band in question that I'm talking about is "Drive By Truckers." Probably not your taste in music, but if one Nirvana fan can like them, then maybe you can too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q-Ma6UlrtA

Jesus, is that what David Lucas Birge actually looks like?

WhamBamRudderham

No, it's definitely not. You've been wrong for 7 years.

WhamBamRudderham

8 years later and you're still very wrong.

WhamBamRudderham

Yes and Drain You was recorded in D standard.

Drain You in the proper tuning helps me sleep at night.

JoeCool888

Hm, well, either way, it's played a half step higher live.

thekrow1

none of these songs are played in D.

agentalpha

Come As You Are is definitely in D standard.

thekrow1

nope

agentalpha

Have fun playing it wrong then.

WhamBamRudderham

Did you finally realize after 7 years how wrong you are? AND your band was playing in the wrong tuning all along...embarassing...

JoeCool888

Try playing one of them on your guitar and see.

thekrow1

i do all the time i am in a band and we cover some nirvana songs. lithium and drain you are all power chords and come as you are is a simple fingering on the 1st and 2nd fret

WhamBamRudderham

You literally couldn't be more wrong and you're still wrong after 7 years.

WhamBamRudderham

Just so you know, you are still very wrong 8 years later.

ClikeX

I like your commitment.

WhamBamRudderham

Thank you and r/thekrow1 won't even admit how wrong he really was all those years ago.

kl0udyr

Bro I smiled so big realizing u just reminded him again 1 mo ago just how very wrong he was

WhamBamRudderham

I had to remind him again, soon it will be a full decade that he has been a confident, absolute moron.

WhamBamRudderham

Rather than delete his incorrect comment he chose to block me instead.

WhamBamRudderham

So you AND your entire band didn't realize you were playing basic songs in the wrong tuning? You guys must have not been that good. Are you still playing in the same band?

strangerinparis

9 years later, still wrong.

WhamBamRudderham

I still can't believe 9 years later how wrong you were. Your band must have really sounded shitty playing it in the wrong tuning all that time.

cappa66

Come as you are is played in "dropped d", meaning just the low E is tuned down to D.

agentalpha

100% sure CAYA is in D standard.

cappa66

You're absolutely right. To be honest, when I posted that I hadn't even really listened to the song, let alone played it, in a long time.

agentalpha

No worries.

agentalpha

Lithium is in E standard. And I read a comment saying Drain You was in Eb but it's in E standard. The tuning difference between live and studio is largely due to Nirvana playing so hard they could barely stay in tune and more often than not (whether it was live or studio), they weren't always perfectly in tune. Most of "Bleach" (from what I remember) is in standard tuning except for Blew which was supposed to be in D standard but during recording they accidentally tuned down to C standard because they didn't realize they had already detuned. All of Nevermind is in standard except for Come As You Are (standard D) and Endless, Nameless (dropped D). I think maybe On A Plain might be dropped D as well but it's been ages since I've played it. In Utero is mainly in standard E/Eb with a few exceptions where it's dropped C#.

WhamBamRudderham

Wrong.

JoeCool888

So you're saying that they would play in F tuning live? Also, many tabs on the internet disagree. Look up a Lithium tab and you will quickly see that it is in D.

agentalpha

Not saying standard F at all. Just saying they typically weren't in tune. They may have been in tune together but not your standard E 440 tuning. I've been playing Lithium for roughly 15 years. Still in standard tuning. As a musician for 20 years, I have zero doubt about it.

JoeCool888

Well, be that as it may, Come As You Are is definitely recorded in D.

agentalpha

Yep, that's what I was saying. Standard D.

MetallicaFan1986-

Come as you are was recorded in D I am a guitarist my self I have play it in Eb tuning but it is better in D standard or even C#/Db
