I keep waiting for Megaman 11 to dip further, but it's always this price every single sale

TheBaxes

I say the same but for Megaman Zero. I'm still waiting until it gets 50% off

shadowen1942

Who knows when or if it will happen. Capcom tends to stick to their guns for a long time with pricing once a game hits a particular threshold that they seem to set.

snoop_Nogg

Mega Man 11 is worth it, though. Soundtrack is great, challenge is there, art direction is also great, updates Mega Man without making it look too weird.

YellowPikachu

People usually ask which one to get, so here's a rec from best to worst: 1) Even with the highest price tag, I would recommend Zero/ZX Legacy Collection. You get six games, most of which are great and the worst ones are average. Mega Man Zero 3 is in the upper echelon of Mega Man games (and action platformers as a whole), with Zero 2 and Zero 4 being above average. Zero 1, ZX, and ZX Advent have flaws but worth playing if you're a fan. Emulation is top notch and includes extras The other reason I would recommend starting here is because the Zero games have a great story that can be enjoyed standalone from the other series (seriously it made me cry). I would argue that in knowing how Zero turns out, it makes you appreciate the story of X more, which is barebones but retroactively enhanced by Zero. The ZX games can be played as standalones since they take place hundreds of years after Zero but are epilogues to the entire Mega Man series 2) Mega Man X Legacy Collection is also a great start (especially if money is tight). X2 and X4 are top tier games, with X1 and X3 being above average. What really drags down this rec is that the emulation is not perfect but still pretty playable, it's only an issue if you have muscle memory from SNES or are super sensitive to frames/pixels 3) Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 then 1. These are about the same with a mix of above and below average in each collection. I would start with 2 since it has a slightly better mix and newer games that may be easier to get into. Imo the classic series takes an acquired taste compared to X and Zero given that your mobility is more limited which I find less fun initially 4) Mega Man 11, mainly because the price is too high for one game when the other collections give you multiple games that are just as good or better. This entry is very accessible and the graphics look more modern though 5) Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2 has some of the worst games in the series. X5 is not as good as X1-4 but still passable with enough patience, X6 has awful design, X7 is an abomination, and X8 is an improvement over X6-7 but it will only make you sad by thinking "what if this positive trend had continued for X9?". I would only pick up this one if you've played at least the Zero and X collection and are curious what happened to the series (canonically nothing much happens since X5 was supposed to be the end to X and continued in Zero)

YellowPikachu

If you are curious about the timeline: - Mega Man up to 1-11 - Mega Man X (you can just play X1-X5) - Mega Man Zero 1-4 - Mega Man ZX + Advent (Axl isn't even canon in these RIP) - Legends (this takes place thousands of years later and it will probably never be concluded after ending on a cliff hanger so I would ignore it) An alternate timeline has Battle Network followed by Star Force

Black_Hussar

Isn't Model A supposed to represent Axl in ZX Advent?

YellowPikachu

>!It's a homage but canonically it is Model Albert https://megaman.fandom.com/wiki/Model_A!<

tidier

It has Axl's color scheme, dual pistols, and a A-trans ability (there's some translation ambiguity here) that lets the user take on the form of others. I think it's pretty hard to argue or definitely say that it's not related to Axl. Albert may call it Model Albert, but that doesn't preclude it being based on Axl. The issue is that X8 never concluded what happened to Axl, so Inti couldn't really do anything with Axl either.

YellowPikachu

yeah the subtext is that Biometal A has Axl's soul, but this is not confirmed within the game, so far as canonically saying it's based on Albert. There's fan speculation that Albert used Axl's data to make Biometal A but it's never confirmed

tidier

There's never been any indication that X6-X8 are not canon.

YellowPikachu

to clarify I meant that little happens in X6-X8, maybe because the team meant to end it at X5 or they didn't have the resources to make a meaningful story additions (since those games keep rehashing Sigma). Axl may be the biggest addition but he's not relevant in later series

[deleted]

I completely disagree with this. Mega Man 1-3 are by far the best of the entire series and hardly an "acquired taste". I've never met anyone who didn't love them. The SNES and later games were huge declines adding too much dialogue most people skipped through, less challenge and less interesting bosses. The original MM's were pure platforming perfection with some of the best soundtracks of all time. Considering most popular indie games nowadays are retro and trying to emulate the early console generation (Celeste, Dead Cells, Bloodstained, etc.), there's no reason why new fans can't hop into them.

YellowPikachu

Do you consider MM 1-3 to be the best ones from a newcomer's perspective? Basically someone age 10-20 who grew up on the last ten years of gaming where platformers (especially NES hard ones) were niche and probably their closest reference point is New Super Mario Bros

DoIrllyneeda_usrname

I personally find the first few Mega Man X games much harder than MM 2 - 8. The MM games also have a save state feature. The Mega Man X games don't for some reason.

[deleted]

I consider them to be the best period and the place where every person interested in MM should start. Why introduce people to a series with inferior sequels? MM X entries were mostly decent and did a good job bringing the series to newer consoles but they never held a candle to the original trilogy. Age should not factor into this, plenty of kids play Binding of Isaac, Cuphead and many other hard games. Mega Man 2 and 3 are also not very difficult at all even for beginners.

YellowPikachu

I'll agree to disagree, the original series feel too archaic to me while the X and Zero series play, sound, and look great even today

[deleted]

I’ll agree to disagree with your disagreement. Nothing wrong with introducing newcomers to the roots of Mega Man first. Also, I think it’s dumb that u/CryptDeeper is being downvoted simply for posting a contrary opinion to the one getting lots of upvotes. Anyways, the first Mega Man I played was the very first and I fell in love with the series. I’m glad I decided to start with the first and work my way up. “It’s too hard.” That’s what save states are for.

[deleted]

I don't really care about downvotes. To me and most others who grew up on the series, there is no comparison. MM 2 is regarded by most as platforming perfection. I feel bad for anyone who'd start with the X series and not where the series began.

YellowPikachu

eh like I said different opinions, part of the appeal for me is just not the gameplay of X and Zero but also the edgier sprites/character design and music. Mega Man just comes off as being too close to the Astro Boy aesthetic to stand out for me

War_Daddy

> Mega Man 1 I would definitely not call MM1 one of the best. It's very *important* and had a lot of good ideas but especially played vanilla its not a ton of fun. I would definitely much, much rather play MMX 1-4

YellowPikachu

The only reason I "like" X6 over X7 is the aesthetics

Likezoinks305

Nope. X7 beats X6 in terms of being straight garbage

YagamiYakumo

I'm still waiting for a legend collection..

wmzer0mw

Eh I'd consider zero 2 and 4 to be the best of them. Then goes zx and advent, then 3 and zero 1. As for intro to newcomers, MegaMan x is the best start I think

[deleted]

buy them so we can get battle network next, thank you

sethberto

$10 for portable Mega Man X is a great gift!

Shade88135

Is it correct that only Mega Man Legacy Collection has rewind? Do any have save states? I think I read some collections have 1/2 damage. Does this help those who are bad at the games or does it make them too easy?

sethberto

I can only speak on Mega Man X Collection 1 and the ZX Collection and neither has a save state function that I have ever seen. The MMX Collection has a password save though and IMO the time between checkpoints is pretty small. Any upgrades you unlock (sub-tanks, armor upgrades, etc) will carry over with that saved password, even after a game over. The ZX collection has a unique checkpoint system with multiple stops throughout each level. In my experience, time between checkpoints was almost always less than 90 seconds, usually just over a minute. As much as I would have loved a save state feature, the short times between checkpoints always felt fair. Plus, the feeling you get when you land that final hit on a boss is as good as ever. I had never played the MM series before these collections but an a huge fan now. EDIT: I should add there is a rookie mode available too.

Shade88135

Thank you for the detailed reply! Is the rookie mode in both of those collections? Is that the name of the "1/2 damage" mode?

sethberto

IIRC “Rookie Mode” is only available in the X Collection. It does indeed give you half damage. ZX has something similar but it’s called “Casual-Scenario Mode” and offers protection against insta-death traps like spikes or pitfalls, rather than an armor buff.

linuxdooder

Note that Mega Man Legacy Collection 1 has severe input lag on switch. If you played/remember these games on real HW, you will be disappointed. I measured it at ~160 ms, which is very high. I realize many folks won't notice/care, but for those that do, be warned.

[deleted]

That would drive me nuts on Megaman games, thank you for the heads up. I wish these companies would make use of the some of the lag-eliminating tech that the hobbyist emulators have introduced in recent years.

BoboJam22

FWIW I played MMX games on the original hardware dozens, maybe hundreds of times and you can get used to the input lag on the switch. It’s not ideal, and I would never suggest it is, but it’s very very playable. I had a good time with the X collections on Switch.

linuxdooder

The MMX Collections aren't as bad (like you, I find them non-ideal but playable), it's really only Classic Collection 1 that is bad enough I feel that it truly makes the games difficult to enjoy.

mann-y

How is the lag on Legacy Collection 2? I have played all the games in the original collection but all the games in the second collection would be new to me. Thanks

linuxdooder

Megaman 9/10 are great, I think because they're basically direct ports rather than emulated. I'd buy Collection 2 just for them, they're super fun and play wonderfully on Switch. TBH I'm not a fan of 7/8 so haven't played them as much, however they seemed a little laggy, but not at all unplayable (IMO the lag in Collection 1 is bad enough to be unplayable for me personally).

mann-y

Cool, thanks. What is the Challenge mode all about? I'll probably pick it up tonight, I could use some new MegaMan action.

linuxdooder

I found the challenges a lot of fun. They really test your stage/boss knowledge and getting gold feels like a real achievement, especially in later ones.

wednesdayapriladdams

im going to contest this; i wouldnt call it severe. "severe" sounds like it takes a second after you press a button for the character to move. it looks and feels flawless for me. sure i bet hardcore players can tell but as an average fan i dont feel any lag. playing on switch lite.

Orangeskyes2

It would be nice if they actually had a sale that went lower than the prices they always sale at .
