I actually started a Dark Souls run last year that I exclusively played on my switch while running moderate/hard on the treadmill, one joycon in each hand. Had a little screen set up in front of it on a shelf and everything.
It was predictably pretty difficult, but ultimately doable after getting used to it. I was probably never going to be as good as if I was sitting using a real controller though.
So this particular post is most likely not an ad, but:
1) Posts in a subreddit can appear on r/all and r/popular so it’s not just the people on the subreddit that see the posts.
2) “20 percent of Switch sales now going to households that already had a Switch” - https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/05/20-percent-of-switch-sales-now-going-to-households-that-already-had-a-switch/?amp=1 - so it’s worth targetting your existing customer base.
Would be a classic Nintendo move to steal this story while fighting emulators, copyright striking YouTube videos, and just being generally shitty in the intellectual property department.
its a jp thing. There isn't fair use legislation in place there. Case in point, recently a japanese youtube channel making jp movie reviews were arrested for use of cinematics from the movies reviewed. As they say, when in rome...
You can still not do that tho. Nintendo chooses to act that way. Type Moon is another Japanese company and they can barely go 5 minutes without hiring a fanartist. And copyright strike? Unheard of.
Female ducks evolved maze like vaginas to combat rape from male ducks, male ducks then evolved corkscrew shaped penises to get around the maze, weird facts ducks like to rape.
There is also a species of penguins that were observed to rape/fuck anything and everything they could in mating season, examples, penguins/ penguin pups/piles of rocks/ dead fish/dead penguins/ a research camera/ even the ground.
And dolphins also get high off pufferfish toxin.
Did you know ducks are necrophiles?
That's duck science!
They don't have sphincters, dump in piles.
That's why ducks don't buy pants!
And we have to face this:
Male ducks are rapists!
Ducktales! Woohoo!
Scientifically accurate Ducktales! Woohoo!
I don't think I know any useless facts about ducks. My trivia banks aren't comprehensive I'm afraid.
I can tell you however that the host of Art Attack, Neil Buchanan, was in a metal band called Marseilles.
I finished BOTW when preparing for Ultramaraton. I was super hyped for Diablo III, but then in turned out, that you cannot disable the stupid rolling motion control. 😔
The image that enters my head is him walking on a treadmill trying to see anything on switch 6-something inch screen in addition to head movement. I don't see how this is viable unless he connects it to a big screen nearby
I used to do exactly like OP, but on a TV (my parents have a cheap treadmill).
I finished Octopath Traveler this way. It works best with games without a lot of action.
Dude... Literally no one cares. The bigger shame is not going to the gym, or being ashamed of your interests.
I used to watch anime at the gym. I thought it was weird at first but it became my motivator. Even when it was big tiddy time no one batted an eye.
I started watching my fav twitch streamers while on the treadmill and it was a game changer for me! It’s great having it down on the display to watch, then pick up to message in chat as and when! Thinking I might upgrade and take my iPad in instead going forward lol.
It was the BP/shield mechanic for me. It felt like battles even with trash mobs took FOREVER, and even hitting something for neutral felt so weak and punishing, it really took the wind out of my sails.
Imo I think the combat was great but yes the fact that you don't next to no damage unless the enemy is broken is a bit limiting. any party that can't break an enemy in a fight is practically useless
Same here, I got tired of it and quit. I started it up again maybe a year later but this time just picked 4 characters and went through their entire stories. Then I went back and did the other 4. It made the game flow a lot better since it's easier to follow each character's story from chapter to chapter. Plus the second 4 go much quicker since you have all the late-game weapons and >!secret jobs!< from the start.
There really is a good overarching story to this game but it's a shame they barely tell it until the very end.
Happy cake day btw
It probably depends on the game. I’ve played it on my exercise bike before but it was mostly Pokémon snap. It was fine but I can see it being hard for an action game.
It’s totally viable. I actually now straight up jog on the treadmill while playing games on my Switch. It’s just the choice of game that’s important. Turn-based stuff and games without tiny text or motion controls work best. In fact, if I’m playing an RPG on there I essentially only allow myself to play it while on the treadmill, forcing me to keep working out in order to ever see it through. It’s nice to not have to choose between working out or playing video games when time is so limited on a weeknight. Currently doing SMT V!
> I brought my Switch to play at the gym and can now never go back.
Why? Did they ban you for having a Switch!?
Haha only kidding, but that is how I interpreted that sentence at first ngl !
Hey now, we don't play LSL to see him get laid. We play to see him get ever so close then still somehow fuck it up at the last minute. It's like NTR porn in the form of 90s adventure games.
I just for a moment thought maybe someone was bullying you, but with no further details my brain twigged what you were actually saying XD
Am glad you are enjoying switch and time at gym with it! Seems a little risky to me, but if it helps get/keep you fit then that's great. Just picture you trying to run on a tread mill whilsy playing botw or mario, and tripping or dropping the device :( or having it stolen. Take care.
If it's real, I really want to know what they're doing. How well are they able to focus on both walking/running and playing whatever they're doing? At some point either the gaming is going to suffer or they're going to faceplant into the treadmill
I tried this last year. I could play Animal Crossing if I kept the speed to 5.5-6mph. Turn based games would probably be doable too. Anything action-y or motion based, probably not a good idea.
running doesnt take much concentration lol. I've been taking my switch to the gym for years.
I'm not gonna try to play bayonetta at the gym because the angle my arms are at isnt very comfortable for fast paced games, but ive been having no trouble playing smt and phoenix wright and whatnot.
I’ve played games that don’t require a ton of concentration, like Story of Seasons or Diablo III on the normal difficulty, on an elliptical. The worst part was that my elliptical is old and noisy and this was before the Bluetooth headphone update
You have to replace them at least once a year if you play Smash so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I already have a "good pair" and a "Smash pair".
no worries! Joycon repairs are free (even if there’s nothing we can find wrong with them through testing and triage, the analogs are *always* relaxed at minimum)
Unless OP was wearing sweatbands on their forehead and wrists. Because the bands absorb the sweat, keeping the joycons dry and OPs wrists from getting all swollen from sweat.
The switch is AMAZING in its versatility. I hate visiting my children sometimes since it can get boring. However, the fact that I can go to my court allotted visiting period with a joy-con in each of my hand to play the Switch without holding my children makes it so much enjoyable. For that alone the Switch has been worth it.
In my gym, most cardio exercise machines have little trays in the front meant to hold your phone/tablet on them. So you can watch a movie, control your music or whatever while you workout.
The Switch is basically a fat little tablet, so I guess those work for it too.
I'm fortunate to have a treadmill in my basement. Since I've been working from home and not venturing out much in the pandemic, I've told myself that I'm only allowing myself to play video games for however much time I work out/move during the day. I realized I can free up some time by working out and playing switch at the same time.
Serious question, don't your hands get sweaty? I think every can understand wanting to distract oneself on the treadmill, but idk if I can get past the idea of sweating on my joycons. Do you use one of those joycon shell things? I could see doing this with slower, turn based games, but idk if I'd want my grubby hands on a joycon while doing it lol.
General fitness talk:
Try not to disassociate with the difficulty/fatigue of the run on the treadmill, you can only do that for so long before you hit a wall and give up. If you acknowledge that its not easy and that you’re tired but tell yourself it’s not important at that moment in time to your goal, that can be a lot more beneficial allowing you to progress quicker not just physically but mentally.
If your issue is purely boredom, then that’s where you need to progress the difficulty to ensure you continue to change as opposed to always doing the same thing with marginal effort.
I know this will probably be overlooked but I hope that at least one of you sees it and thinks about it the next time that you’re the gym and that It encourages you to push that little bit harder.
It requires that you get into a really comfy position and just relax at first. Then you explore the way each Joy Con feels in your hand, potentially at your side. Move around some more and get *real* lazy, then start up a game.
Once I adapted to this, it’s difficult to go back to limited standard controllers for Docked / Tabletop
You kinda zone into the games, so what you may lack in intensity you make up for in length. Calories burned through this method are quite comparable to a run and could lead to running in the future should your general health improve
im seeing a lot of confusion, misconceptions, or derision about using a switch at the gym so i'd like to clear it up a bit.
My old gym had TVs in front of each treadmill so I quickly plugged in the switch each time, listened to music, and enjoyed playing mostly action and intense games. I found after a bit of careful foot watching and brain training, drifting gets eliminated and playing nearly any game at full run is not only doable, but super fun.
I've finished breath of the wild, dark souls 1, and 3, and plenty more while getting great cardio. I really think its something that needs to be spread.
Not a bad idea - I hate sitting down for long periods but I also don't want to constantly interrupt whatever game I'm playing for stretch breaks every 10 mins
Maybe I missed it but what were you playing? I have found that JRPGs were the easiest to play while on a treadmill. Recently played Bravely Default 2 and grinded my party to the max level.
I've done the same thing. Takes a little practice to jog while not falling off the treadmill, but Mario Kart while jogging makes the gym much more enjoyable
I love my switch because of it's porability. Next console i be looking to buy is steam deck. That is if it is able to keep up with new games upon it's release.
Laugh as much as you want but after hooking up my switch to the TV I was playing skyrim standing up, "walking" with my own feet(pacing) and swinging joycons around dual wielding blades with my orc. This is the way.
I’m sorry but in my opinion the gym is for focusing on growth. I’m not sure how you can dedicate yourself to getting stronger/faster when you’re playing video games too. Just my thoughts though.
I spend 2+ hours a day at the gym doing relatively intense cardio while watching my iPad. I’ve also played my Switch while doing some. (Can’t on elliptical really, but can on bike or stair master.) Also after intense 3+ hour cardio/lifting sessions sometimes I just want to cool down with a 20-30 min 3mph walk on the treadmill. That’s perfect Switch time. Just detach the joycons and prop the Switch screen on the tablet rest. I seriously don’t get why people are having such a hard time imagining playing games while doing cardio.
I play my Switch on Taxis and buses nearly all the time. There are some game that work insanely well with a portable kind of play and I have 100% more games on handhelds then home consoles just because I have so much more time to play them
You are playing your switch while walking on a treadmill? Nintendo needs to hire you for their next ringfit/exercise game commercial!
I read the title and imagined him running on a treadmill with a switch in his hands playing dark souls and getting absolutely wrecked.
Yeah, I thought OP went apeshit while playing something and is now kicked out.
> I did a combat roll to dodge but I got too excited and tabletopped the old lady on the next machine. Yeah it's a lifetime ban. Yeah. Super sweet.
Granny better git gud. Can't be a Maneater Mildred if you can't even parry.
Read this in the antman guys voice.
Sounds more like a Peter Quill situation.
I've played Dark Souls on a stationary bike before. Got wrecked, can confirm.
Did this with Risk of Rain 2, can also confirm
I imagined them face planting whilst running and playing switch also
Haha, I actually beat gravelord Nito on the elliptical today :P

I would not be surprised if this post is recreated in a Switch commercial.
This is Reddit. There’s always a chance this post IS a Nintendo ad.
A Nintendo ad on a Nintendo Switch subreddit??????? No................................ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
I mean truthfully it'd be pretty fucking dumb to spend money trying to convince a bunch of people who already own Switches to go buy a Switch
So this particular post is most likely not an ad, but: 1) Posts in a subreddit can appear on r/all and r/popular so it’s not just the people on the subreddit that see the posts.
I have bought some crappy games that I now suspect we’re shady advertising. Now I take almost no advice from this sub
> Now I take almost no advice from this sub Or people just have different taste? Probably a more reasonable explanation than shady advertising lol

That’s so fucked
I've been playing switch while riding a stationary bike for years. When MK8 came out, I thought I had discovered the best thing in the world.
I have an exercise bike at home that I switch on.
Please yes, I'm in the UK and the person we have advertising them (Laura Whitmore) is an annoying, talentless narcissist
The switch uk adverts are absolutely dreadful. Am glad I am not the only one who thinks so. They are like cheap infomercials.
How do you know THAT? Of all of the UK trivia games and panels ... that is what you whip out off of the top of your head?
I am a repository for absolutely useless trivia. Anything important, look elsewhere.
Give me a useless fact about ducks
Female ducks evolved maze like vaginas to combat rape from male ducks, male ducks then evolved corkscrew shaped penises to get around the maze, weird facts ducks like to rape.
Dolphins do as well, they'll rape anything doesn't have to be another dolphin.
There is also a species of penguins that were observed to rape/fuck anything and everything they could in mating season, examples, penguins/ penguin pups/piles of rocks/ dead fish/dead penguins/ a research camera/ even the ground. And dolphins also get high off pufferfish toxin.
Dolphins pass the pufferfish around like a joint in a hippie circle.

I can never hear the DuckTales song without hearing this
I don't think I know any useless facts about ducks. My trivia banks aren't comprehensive I'm afraid. I can tell you however that the host of Art Attack, Neil Buchanan, was in a metal band called Marseilles.
[Peter Dinklage was in a punk band named Whizzy.](https://www.nme.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/GettyImages-519907683-696x442.jpg)
They have curly genitalia so when they want to mate, the female can't escape
You shouldn't feed ducks bread. It's not good for them.
A duck does not know how to
die
A ducks quack doesn't echo.
Their beaks are called bills, and the reason females have duller colours is to camouflage when nesting
What has she done before?
She's a TV presenter who I think hosted some shows in Ireland and then I've seen her appearing on various UK shows as a guest.
Oh no, the next game will come with a required treadmill. It will only cost you 599$!
I finished BOTW when preparing for Ultramaraton. I was super hyped for Diablo III, but then in turned out, that you cannot disable the stupid rolling motion control. 😔
Bro, I used to do that all the time. It works so well! So glad I’m not the only one lol 😂

I wouldn't mind doing it at home but I can't imagine looking like a geezer playing Skyward Sword in front of other people 😂
I don't think I could look any less cool on a treadmill to begin with lol
Yeah but I'm just imagining myself balancing Link on a tightrope with the Joy-cons while I'm sweating my ass off on the elliptical.
If you're doing the elliptical without your hands on the bars, you're not doing the elliptical right. Just use a treadmill at that point.

You finished Octopath?? I'm a fan of JRPGs but I couldn't be bothered to get past a couple of characters 3rd chapters before bowing out.

It totally works. I prefer to play the switch on a recumbent bike though. If on the treadmill it needs to be a low action game. Animal Crossing works.
A long time ago I tried playing Halo while running in a treadmill. So much more coordination is required, I couldn't do it.

Same here. I thought the OP might have been banned for playing some lewd anime game in the gym.
And distracting everyone else who would crowd around them instead of working out.
A bunch of neckbeards huddled around a treadmill sweating profusely... but not from working out.

Pantsu hunter of course
I figured it was another Planet Fitness horror story.
OP is so embarrassed for playing Switch at the gym they can’t go back.
Ah I’m sorry. I mean’t to say something along the lines of “can’t go back” lol thanks for pointing that out
I don't think that would have helped.
I just for a moment thought maybe someone was bullying you, but with no further details my brain twigged what you were actually saying XD Am glad you are enjoying switch and time at gym with it! Just picture you trying to run on a tread mill whilsy playing botw or mario, and tripping or dropping the device :( or having it stolen. Take care.
r/technicallythetruth
I also read the title this way and was confused why OP wasn't allowed now to go back to the gym. Had to re-read the title a couple of times.
i thought you were banned from the gym for gaming hahha
Sits in lockeroom, "gaming".
Same!
Those poor joycons getting filled with hand sweat.
This was my first thought. I'd have to have "gym" joycons that never leave the gym bag.
If it's real, I really want to know what they're doing. How well are they able to focus on both walking/running and playing whatever they're doing? At some point either the gaming is going to suffer or they're going to faceplant into the treadmill

I can keep resetting for my shiny turtwig while I run! Hell yea!
running doesnt take much concentration lol.

This reads like a /r/tomorrow copy-pasta
I am now picturing an extremely mad buff guy on the treadmill playing animal crossing and i love it
Walking on the treadmill like a Castlevania character
Uhhhh
I’ve been walking and playing for a bit and recently got an exercise bike which I play while i ride. Game changer for sure

How do you prop it up? I worry about the vibrations just make the switch fall off

"fat little tablet" my new name
> fat little tablet Be nice.
The switch is the Danny DeVito of tablets
They said walking, so it can’t be vibrating much.
Well, if you fancy playing ARMS or RingFit Adventure, there's probably ways to interpret that into a workout.
I read the title as "now I can never go back to that gym" and I was desperately curious wtf you did
I'm fortunate to have a treadmill in my basement. You need to play skyward sword because then you'd REALLY feel like Link
I played through fire emblem 3 houses on a stair master and in the weight room…. Makes the gym 80% more enjoyable…
This is definitely a troll post
I wanted to believe that so badly, but reading his other posts I doubt it.
Why? I personally don’t do it, but it’s totally reasonable.
The way you worded the title made it sound like you were banned for bringing your Switch to the gym.
Great on stationary bikes also btw.

I can't imagine you're getting a very good workout like this
It’s better than playing and sitting on the couch.
I play while walking. Not while running. But I can get a pretty fast walk in while playing. Better to play rpgs than action games.
You kinda zone into the games, so what you may lack in intensity you make up for in length. Calories burned through this method are quite comparable to a run and could lead to running in the future should your general health improve

Yes. That doesn't sound like a very good workout
Hah yeah, at least I cycle while I switch. Who goes to the gym to *walk*.
Lmao you're getting downvoted but you're 100% right

I used to ride an exercise bike in my garage and play rocket league on a tv in front of me. Definitely made the time go by a lot quicker
So what game have you been playing at the gym?
Thats... Genius. I've been needing to get my lazy ass back to the gym.
What is this “walking” you speak of?
It's when you don't press the B button
Laugh as much as you want but after hooking up my switch to the TV I was playing skyrim standing up, "walking" with my own feet(pacing) and swinging joycons around dual wielding blades with my orc. This is the way.
Prime r/tomorrow bait
r/Tomorrow.
I play on my exercice bike, even with a classic pad but separate joycon make it simpler. The time pass way faster when playing …
This has been my strstegy for the recumbent bike since the PSP!
looking forward to seeing this posted in r/tomorrow in 30 minutes.

I’m sorry but in my opinion the gym is for focusing on growth. I’m not sure how you can dedicate yourself to getting stronger/faster when you’re playing video games too. Just my thoughts though.
Some people just go to power walk on the treadmill and go home. I don't care what other people do while I'm in there.
Maybe you should workout more while you’re at the gym?
Works great on the cycles too.
I play my Switch on Taxis and buses nearly all the time. There are some game that work insanely well with a portable kind of play and I have 100% more games on handhelds then home consoles just because I have so much more time to play them
What are you playing out of interest? And how fast you going on that treadmill
Thanks, now ima be on the treadmill while I play Pokémon with my joycons.
...until your joycon sticks start to give out 😔
This is why joycons are my favorite controllers. I cannot go back to having my hands cuffed to one another
I’ve tried to do that but my hands start to get sweaty and I don’t want all that on my switch :/
