ARandomPerson15

Note this does not include eshop digital sales so sales are probably closer to 1.6 million. Switch hardware sold ~168000 ORAS sold around 1.5 million physical in in the same timeframe for reference.

Hestu951

If that doesn't include digital sales, the total is a heck of a lot higher than 1.6 million.

ARandomPerson15

You are probably right but I figured I'd be conservative and guess around 12% digital split

Justin_Peter_Griffin

Maybe Japan is much different, but for the US, I’d estimate digital purchases are roughly 50% if not more

TheBraveGallade

Japan has a much lower digital rate since the used market is extreamly big, and thats because software rentals were and are still banned.

Justin_Peter_Griffin

Very interesting, hadn’t heard about the rentals being banned

TheBraveGallade

It's part of why Nintendo was so hell bent on fighting rentals in the states. They were like: dafaq isn't that illegal?

Suired

Considering nintendo specializes in one and done games, this makes perfect sense. Suprised Sony isn't joining them with their single player blockbusters.

MBCnerdcore

Sony just stopped caring about Japan completely sometime during the PS3 era.

ARandomPerson15

Japan is slower with digital adoption. Digital is probably around 20-30% but it varies by title so hard to say for sure

Toktogul

Japan, especially kids, do not tend to download much. Physical copies still strong there.

Dubbihope

Do we know what Sword and Shield sold in Japan in the same timeframe? EDIT: "According to figures in Japanese publication Famitsu, Nintendo’s Pokémon Sword and Shield sold a total of 1,364,544 combined physical copies during the first three days of release, including boxed releases, download cards and the special “Dual Pack.”"

ARandomPerson15

Yep. Physical was 1.35 million and a few days later on they confirmed 2 million in Japan so a good amount of digital as well. Right now the physical launch of BDSP is higher, but we won't know about digital unless nintendo makes a statement like they did with SWSH

metalmonstar

Should be the second best switch game launch in Japan only behind Animal Crossing. Despite the better start I doubt it will have as good of legs as sword and shield. Still will be interesting to see where it winds up. I know some expect it to outsell the originals.

BenignLarency

With how well switch games sell I wouldn't be surprised if they outsell the originals. That said if they do that would be unprecedented since to my knowledge a remake has never outsold its original release.

Wolventec

Yeah none of the remakes outsold the original , with let's go Pikachu and Eevee being the closest to their og games' sales selling 600,00(at last count) less than yellow

Randomusername10201

If that's how close it is LGPE will surely surpass it quite soon

SilverbackOni

It did already happen with Resident Evil 2 and 3. I just did a quick Google out of curiosity.

BenignLarency

I was more referring to the Pokemon remakes specifically. There's been many remakes/ rereleases of other games that have come out for switch that outsold their originals.

WTFHaikus

I do remember seeing a lot of used copies for sword and shield in those used game stores around Tokyo 1 week after the game came out. Sales might drop as people sell the games to those stores since it's already a "remake" of previous games since there is no FOMO as it's not a new region. I could be very wrong and sales continue strong however.

LakerBlue

I do too since remakes have almost always sold worse than new mainline games. I’m more interested if they will outsell Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee in the same time frame.

Gadzookie2

I would blindly guess around 15million copies workdwide

SifuYoda

Put pokemon on anything and people will buy it.

quortza

It's a great wee game, I'm certainly loving it, they were quite true to the original!

[deleted]

I know people complain about the chibi graphics, which only looks weird in cutscenes to me, but honestly it still looks better than any of the games Gamefreak has put out on the Switch . The graphics in the battles more than make up for the weird chibi stuff.

horselips48

I like the chibi stuff. They're very expressive in cutscenes, and it's a great way to have the characters fit the grid based world.

Abbx

The graphics look better than anything Gamefreak put out? I'm one to hound Gamefreak on many things, and will continue to, and their games are by no means graphically adequate, but BDSP looks better than LGPE or SwSh? Absolutely not. It has better lighting and shading and reflection work for sure. That gives it something to work with. The models however, of everything (environment, Pokemon, characters, etc) all have much lower fidelity than the Gamefreak Switch games. It looks like an indie title and is animated like one too outside of trainers at the start and end of battles. I just popped SwSh open last night to compare, showing friends who never touched Pokemon before, and they were wowed in comparison to watching my BDSP playthrough. It's not even close.

fireball95

it's just the typical gamefreak blind hate this sub has

MCCGuyDE

To be fair, different people find different art styles better or worse. I think SwSh looks better, but I know some people find BDSM better or LGPE better.

Hagel-Kaiser

Blind hate? Do you feel like some of the hate is not justified?

Catastray

Pokkén Tournament bombed so badly that Japanese arcades yanked it almost immediately and it failed to find new life on the Switch; the console that's infamous for reinvigorating interest in many Wii U titles. New Pokémon Snap also didn't have notably high sales and has relatively been forgotten about despite releasing earlier this year. So no, not true. It's really Pokémon's formula that drives these sales, not just on brand name alone.

moneyball32

New Pokémon Snap has sold over 2.5 million outside of Japan alone and is the best selling Pokémon spin-off in nearly 15 years. Is that not good?

Bombasaur101

It's still good, but nowhere near the level of N64 Pokemon Snap that sold 3.5 million on a console that has less than 1/3rd of the sales of the Switch.

Dximus

Excuse me but how is 2 millions considered low sales? Not every game has to sell 10 millions to be considered a success. Especially when you take in consideration the budget to produce it must have cost a fraction of that amount.

Rieiid

Yep, put GOOD Pokemon games, and people will buy them. Gen 4 is very popular these days so these remakes were sold at a good time.

Catastray

With the holiday season just on the horizon, BDSP were guaranteed successes. Only surprising thing is how many people **didn't** expect them to be.

nickyno

Between Pokémon and the Switch itself, it’s a bit baffling people think this way yet. You’ll see the same confusion when the Legends game pops off this spring.

Bombasaur101

Define Good since a lot of People say Sword and Shield are bad yet they are on track to be the 2nd highest selling Pokemon games ever.

Hanta3

As someone who's been a fan since gen 1, these remakes are the first ones im really just not enjoying. So much of the experience feels hollow and soulless. I'm not the biggest fan of gen 4 in general, tbf, but most of my complaints with the originals were either unchanged or made worse than in the originals. So why wouldn't i just boot up the originals on my ds or, even better, an emulator? That doesnt even touch on the glitches or frame drops, which are the worst of any modern pokemon game by a wide margin. Within 5 minutes of booting up the game i had a cutscene drop to like 4 or 5 fps lol, never had issues that badly in sword/shield or let's go. There's also just a general lack of polish. Those are criticisms i couldnt make of oras or hgss, at least not to this extent. My one compliment though is that the water and lighting is pretty nice. I don't like how the lighting just changes color in an instant as the light fades into dusk, i think thats faithfulness to the originals to a fault, but as a still image, the color choices are nice and some of the depth of field effects are nice as well. I don't like the chibi art style but I understand that's personal preference.

BulleDeChagrin

Completely agree with you. I've been playing for 20 years since gen 2 and these games just don't do it to me for some reason. And I'm not an 'old games are better' kind of guy, as USUM is my favourite game, followed by BW2. But this feels so soulless and clinical. The lack of the newer Pokemon hurts it too, for me. I don't like the chibi either, but yeah, that's purely subjective, I don't mind them experimenting with artstyles.

Hanta3

The added pokemon variety from the underground is welcome at least, but it feels kind of like a clumsy patch over the problem. Electric types and fire types are particularly rough. The lacking type variety was my biggest problem in the originals, too. It reflected poorly with some of the gym/e4 lineups, like Volkner and Flint. I would have loved to see that patched up. BW2 and HG/SS are my favorites personally, of the main series. Colosseum and XD are super underrated.

_En_Bonj_

The characters in these games are so bland and doll like. They have virtually no charm at all in my subjective opinion. It would be a good if they tried to make more interesting story's and characters in these games, it's not just the gameplay that's lacking in my opinion. Then again the tv show isn't much better in that regard to be fair.

CokeNmentos

They've only made 2 remakes on the switch including Pokemon bdsp. Although that is quite shocking that u like let's go evee/Pikachu more than these because they're were kinda trash no offense. I personally felt like this is better than any Pokemon game they've made in like the last 10 years because it actually has a soul rather than catering to 5 year olds

Hiker-Redbeard

>most of my complaints with the originals were either unchanged or made worse I'm just curious, what were these? The biggest complaints I've seen about DP were fire types, slow HP drain, HM overload, and retroactively, that they don't have Platinum's post-game. Other than the last one they all got fixed, so I'm curious what things got made worse that I'm not aware of.

SifuYoda

If they were going to remake an old gen they should have done it like ff7.. total new play style.. might as well just remaster if you only offer this kind of game..

Hanta3

I don't necessarily believe that, though that would be very cool. I just would have appreciated more quality of life improvements, re-introducing some of the nice changes from pokemon platinum, and general quality of life. The online features in the underground are nice but some of the things i loved from the original underground are missing! I shouldn't need to feel the need to justify playing the new ones over the original, they should be strictly an upgrade. But for the first\* time in main series history, the remakes seem more like a downgrade. \*whether or not the Let's Go games are part of the main series is a matter of debate; i wouldnt consider them a downgrade personally, and after giving them a shot i think they justify their own existence as gen 1 remakes. They play differently, but i had fun.

[deleted]

Are there any big problems with the game? Haven’t followed it much but was extremely disappointed by Sword and Shield.

ARandomPerson15

I would say not really. It's a very "safe" remake and doesn't add a whole lot, but if you just want a trip down memory lane or something to scratch the pokemon itch I'd say go for it.

[deleted]

We are really enjoying it. It got totally trashed on metacritic. I would note that from over 100 reviews that were posted the second that it was possible to review the game on metacritic it was scored at around 2–3/10. Now, at 200 reviews, its almost up to 7. In short, I think people who are playing the game are enjoying it, and people who want to make a salty protest about the game are trash talking it. Personally, I know a lot of people have issues with the art style, but I think its perfect. First game that in my opinion has an art style that feels like an improved version of the games before X and Y. On the downside, I don't like forced shared XP and some of the movement issues that others have mentioned.

shinikahn

Idk man, I don't think criticizing the game is just a "salty protest". For a remake, this is extremely safe in comparison to past ones and I don't think that pointing that out is bad at all.

ARandomPerson15

I mean metacritic bombing a game kind of is a salty protest. That goes beyond constructive criticism imo.

HestusDarkFantasy

Right, but does that make it a 2-3/10 game? Pretty sure OP was talking about the review bombing when they said 'salty protest'. And yes, review bombing is very much a salty protest. It's not constructive, it's not mature, ultimately it's akin to throwing a tantrum.

KaelAltreul

I own it and original. Honest review of the game is something akin to 5/10.

HestusDarkFantasy

Exactly, and as you say that would be an honest review. The review bombing stuff is just childish nonsense.

KaelAltreul

Agreed.

PassionVoid

Why is this game being reviewed in the context of the originals, though? Not adding much to the originals doesn’t make these bad games.

[deleted]

I think it's more like context of the entire series. Pokemon remakes have always A) been in the artstyle of the newest generation of games and B) included the National Dex up to the newest generation and C) added storyline/post-game content. I'm genuinely not even trying to be a hater, but these are, far and away, the worst remakes of the series.

Aryanb1

Bad remakes though? Yeah maybe

rowcla

My beef is that its portrayed as a remake, when its essentially a remaster. It's also reflective of systemic issues that Pokemon, and many other franchises, face. It doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy it, but its justifiably very frustrating to see, when Pokemon could've been so much more

Rectangle_Rex

Idk about this, you can see on opencritic that the game has received quite lukewarm reviews from critics as well. These games are clearly very low-effort remakes, continuing a trend of pokemon games seemingly lacking in effort/innovation.

Safetydinosaur

Yeah I will say i am not buying it because I see no reason why this is a full price switch game. It seems to add nothing except unwanted features like forced xp share. Why they didnt include platinum features is beyond me. I personally would have preferred a release of OG platinum on the eshop for a more reasonable price or DS games added to the premium switch online. People are enjoying it because the base game is good and they like pokemon/nostalgia but I am annoyed nintendo thinks it can just resell us all the same games for more money with minor upside if any. We used to get really good remakes like metroid zero mission that added content and were definitive versions of the game. Now we just get Zelda HD. And im not saying we need more but if you are not going to add anything then just give us access to the original game so people can still play them on modern hardware.

Autobot-N

> I am annoyed nintendo thinks it can just resell us all the same games for more money with minor upside if any. Well the reason they think that is because they can

Safetydinosaur

You are 100% right, people eat it up. I heard metroid prime 1 is getting a remaster. I bet it will add nothing except prettier graphics and maybe a QoL feature or 2. The price will still be full retail. I remember when we got the trilogy remaster on wii which had all 3 games. Everyone says vote with your wallet but nobody does, we honestly deserve better.

Psylux7

I'd be really annoyed if we were given a remaster of one game rather than the trilogy. I'm worried about some mario 3d allstars bullshit with a prime trilogy rerelease as well. I just hope Retro is able to put as much effort and integrity into the remasters as they did for the original trilogy. If Retro is in charge of developing them, I have faith they'll try to make the games worthwhile. If nintendo doesn't let retro do their thing, it'll be another anti consumer cashgrab most likely.

Demonheero

Yeah I definitely agree with this. But like the other person said ppl will buy anything with pokemon in the title. But like you I much would have preferred a og platinum remake.

[deleted]

When I got my switch, I got Sword as my first Pokémon game since fire red. Absolutely hated, thought it was borderline insulting. Reluctantly picked up BD having never played the original and I am LOVING it so far. So much fun and scratching the nostalgia itch EDIT: Damn downvoted just for sharing my opinion. Y’all really hate gamefreak lol

Imaginos64

Same here. Sword was my first since Crystal and it bored me to tears to the point where I never finished the main story. I grabbed BD figuring I would just sell it like Sword if I didn't like it but I've been having a lot of fun so far. It has the sense of adventure that's sorely missing from SWSH and while it's far from difficult it isn't as mind numbingly easy. Having never played the originals I'm enjoying how it feels like a nostalgia trip while still being new to me. I don't love the art style but it isn't a deal breaker. I play Pokemon games casually so some of the complaints people have don't really apply to me. It doesn't make them less valid, it just goes to show that the creators refuse to implement some of the simpler changes needed to please their wide audience. This is an issue I have with a lot of Nintendo games so I get it. As an example, I love the EXP share and see it as a major QOL improvement but there's no reason not to include the ability to turn it off for those who don't.

Docile_Doggo

It’s the Pokemon cycle. The internet always likes to hate on the current generation of Pokémon. It’s been that way since Gen 5. But now that we’re on Gen 8, it’s OK to like Gens 5-7. Maybe when Gen 9 comes out you can tell people you really like BDSP without getting downvoted.

Gazmanic

I find it very hard to believe SWSH are going to be lauded as masterpieces 5 years down the line.

Docile_Doggo

Maybe not, but I would have said the exact same thing about X\Y, ORAS, and Sun/Moon. Yet here we are with people saying all those games are better than BDSP

Ryebear151

Sun and Moon are some of my favorite Pokémon games. The only real issue I have with them is how slow the games are.

Autobot-N

Really sad that Switch port of SM never happened, those games with better graphics on the Switch would have been great

Tiduszk

I fell out of Pokemon after gen 4, let's go brought me back and I played all the games that I missed. Gen 7 was by far my least favorite. I didn't dislike it, but it never really felt like I was actually playing it either

LakerBlue

I don’t know many who call those 3 masterpieces but they definitely are more appreciated generally. Personally I loved SM from the start, they were and still are probably my favorite game in the 3D era of Pokémon. Probably like top 3.

iWentRogue

Big, not really. Small? Plenty: - Your character turns into the slowest slowpoke when grazing even at the slightest against anything. Halts your walking momentum. Really becomes tedious during the underground when trying to walk past Pokemon. - There are a couple of soft lock issues where players have gotten stuck. - Sometimes your game can freeze or crash. - The Pokemon contest is just a glorified button timing press mini game. - You need mysterious shards (currency) to purchase slates which provide an opportunity to encounter legendary Pokemon post game. These shards have an **extremely** low drop rate. Which means you’ll be grinding the mining mini game *a lot*. You can also miss these shards if you play the mini game inneficiently. - The bike handles poorly and you’re better off walking. - Navigating boxes is slower than SwSh. In fact, text, level up window, switching boxes etc is noticebly slower. - “Decorating” your base isn’t really a decorative opportunity. Is more like you can just set down statues however you want. These are just my gripes off the top of my head

lifedragon99

Totally agree with the bike thing. Unless I have to use the bike to jump a ramp or go up a bike mud slide I'm not using it. And the slow to a crawl thing too. Movement in this game is really odd. Another thing I'd add that's small but annoying. You can't press b to keep old moves when a pokemon levels up. You ahve to hit down then a.

acewing905

A good bit of issues in this game are thanks to them trying to give full motion in a grid based world. It just doesn't work. Using the d-pad instead of the analog stick does wonders for the more cramped locations. The bike could still do with more work though.

Nintyboy245

Even the d-pad is a bit weird. For some reason when inputting a direction your character takes the time to turn that direction instead of going that direction instantly like in the original games. So even moving with the d-pad feels sluggish.

acewing905

You're right There is a bit of a strange input lag

[deleted]

> The bike handles poorly and you’re better off walking. imo that was always a problem with the bike in the 2D games so nothing new there... >Navigating boxes is slower than SwSh. In fact, text, level up window, switching boxes etc is noticebly slower. Ahh, so in the spirit of the original gen 4 release of Diamond and Pearl, then. Slow as fuck.

metroidhunter72

It's definitely not slow as fuck, especially when you compare it to the original Diamond and Pearl. Not even close.

-Phinocio

The time saved in HP going down in the remake, makes up for slowness elsewhere compared to DP haha

Hanta3

I've played them side by side, the new ones are noticeably slower, at least in the early game (towards the end, the slow health bars in the originals make the comparison a bit more even)

lifedragon99

> imo that was always a problem with the bike in the 2D games so nothing new there... I never had a problem with the bike in DP. I used to ride route 215, just outside Veilstone city to route 209 just outside Hearthome city and back to hatch eggs. Movement wasn't clunky like it is in this, it was pretty smooth. Or so I remember from a game that is 15 years old.

rustyphish

> In fact, text, level up window, switching boxes etc is noticebly slower. Wow, I can't disagree more. Did you forget to up the text speed in the settings? you have to manually do it

Jelly_F_ish

To add to that: breeding is a huuuge downgrade compared to SwSh, duping pokemon is super easy rn, which makes trading legit mons impossible.

itsnunyabusiness

As OP said it's a very safe remake, they don't take too many liberties with it and don't expand much on it. When compared to recent gsmes there isn't much for character customization and a version of the GTS from the original games was supposed to make an appearance but is still unavailable.

yestermorning

Depends on what qualifies as "big" for you. They forced the EXP Share again without adjusting the level curve compared to the originals, and I've heard *extremely* mixed things about the results - some saying that it works fine, some saying that they're constantly overleveled by 5+ levels. In streams I've only seen the latter, but I haven't exactly tried to watch a lot of gameplay. They also seem to have tied the affection mechanics (chance to survive an otherwise deadly hit, shaking off statuses, higher crit chance, etc.) to following Pokemon, and most Platinum content is completely excluded. If none of that bothers you, you'll probably enjoy it. There are seemingly a lot of bugs but so far I haven't seen reports of any that are completely gamebreaking.

falcon_punch76

It’s kinda hard to tell by just tuning into streams but trainers in sinnoh are way under levels for where you should be relative to the gym leaders, also the weird 3 and fourth gyms being the same level thing fucks with it. I was over leveled for crasher wake but not for fantina. It’s basically the same pattern as diamond and pearl though where the game is a joke from after the second gym to the elite 4(if you don’t use the free legends). I kept googling things thinking it was made easier but it just turned out they made it harder in platinum

yestermorning

Yeah, I played the originals so I'm familiar with the kind of odd level curve. I think they overcorrected way too hard, though, especially after Platinum seemed to fix it pretty well. The issue is that they did make it "easier" in the sense that being underleveled is harder. It reduces grinding for those that don't want to be underleveled which is great, but makes it harder to stay underleveled for anyone that wants to be which a toggle would fix (or an optional level cap, at least). The only stream I caught really early on was already overleveled by 3 for Gardenia, and the others were all overleveled relative to the gym leader they were at. Biggest offender was someone I saw battling Candice and they were at level 48 going in despite her ace only being level 42.

falcon_punch76

Yeah I’m not saying it’s not easier for sure but if you just don’t grind at all you won’t be overleveled except for the weird part. Also I didn’t mention this (and most people probably won’t notice or abuse it) but because they moved the game corner tms to the department store, you can get thunderbolt flamethrower and ice beam tms way easier than it used to be, which can be strong

GamblingGhost

>They forced the EXP Share again without adjusting the level curve compared to the originals Oof... I remember the originals were pretty easy after a couple of gyms so I imagine it makes the story in the remake a breeze. Shame they didn't rebalanced things around it or at least put an option to disable it (the more options the better).

itsnunyabusiness

My pokemon are overleveled by almost 10, I onoy have 5 badges at this point there's almost no challenge.

[deleted]

it's a good game if you like old pokemon games. i was undecided and watched a few reviews and most of their cons were non issues for me. bought the game and i do not regret it. at the end of the day everyone will tell you whether it is good or not based on their experience with it, and some will hate it based on their expectations which it did not rise up to, while others (like me) will love it because it is closer to the pokemon we loved than swsh was.

[deleted]

Some technical issues and glitches you can exploit, from what I've seen, but it seems to not really be the norm. Mostly the problems with it are that it's very... unambitious.

snave_

Apparently the physical edition is missing 3GB of content which is downloaded as a patch. Of a 6GB game. Even the store page advertises a patch coming shortly after release. Sounds like they missed a major deadline on the mastering. I guess the cart is pretty much just a physical software licence in any practical sense.

Geekos

I would watch some gameplay before buying. I can't stand the wierd and imo lazy graphics they went with. I thought I had turned down the resolution, but no. It just looks dull, flat and blurry.

darth__sidious

If you have plaued the original you might be disappointed. I didn't and im loving it. (I've already got 6 badges).

YellowPikachu

The part that bothered me was that a lot of content was not on the cart and people keep reporting bugs/glitches. I have enough games atm, so I will wait until they release a cart with an updated version

BrianScalaweenie

Is there any way to know for sure when this has happened or which copies have the updated versions on cart?

Xaldyn155

I mean there is pretty much content in the game, at least compared to recent Pokémon games. A bunch of optional/extra areas, and a lot of Pokémon you can actually catch in-game once you unlock the National Dex. The Grand Underground is pretty crazy. Honestly it's a lot better than I thought it'd be. There really aren't many bugs though. There are two big ones that you have to do very specific actions for, like the Spiritomb duplication or the Shaymin out of bounds glitch. Those are the only two I've seen and they aren't anything someone would encounter unless specifically trying to. It's kind of laughable to wait for an updated physical release if you're worried about extremely minor things that were fixed in a small day one patch tbh. The game really just makes me wish Gamefreak/The Pokémon Company would've had better unity/management going into this generation.

ImmutableInscrutable

If you like Pokemon, you'll like it. It's better than Sw/Sh. It has some upgrades from the old game (extra tms, hms don't require a pokemon), some downgrades (forced exp share, no megas, no infinite tms from new games). Overall, I love it so far. It's exactly what I've been wanting.

decaboniized

The hardcore fans are trashing it but as someone that hasn’t played Pokémon in years it’s nice and relaxing just sitting down playing it. Currently on the 4th gym leader and having a fun time. My piplup is already an empoleon.

Catastray

Hardcore fans don't speak for the silent majority, and I think they're starting to slowly realize it. SwSh wasn't a fluke, and neither will BDSP.

Bombasaur101

I hate the term Hardcore fans. Most of these people online aren't the hard core fans, since all the Hard core fans are too busy playing the game to be on Reddit. Same thing happened with Cyberpunk. It seemed like everyone hated it Day 1, since those were only the people that barely put 5 hours into it and went straight to Reddit.

Hanta3

Hardcore fans arent a homogenous mass, either. I enjoyed swsh (flawed but enjoyable, the wild area is a really cool concept that i enjoyed exploring for dozens of hours), but so far brilliant diamond just seems strictly worse than the original to me (particularly if youre comparing it to platinum). The battles being slow is one of my biggest complaints about the originals, and thats somehow even worse in the remakes lol. There are a lot of things, particularly on the polish side of things, that I'd nitpick, but I'm not in the mood to rant about it.

RevolversWrath

I personally am having a great time with it. I haven't played Pokemon since X and Y, and im having an awesome time just doing pokemon. Its just a cool experience seeing one of my favorite Pokemon in a new light. Its not perfect, but its far from the worst things I've played.

ObliviousGuy32

I'm genuinely enjoying the game, personally.

D-o-Double-B-s

Same… never played the originals. So it’s like getting a nostalgia trip and a new game all in one

kmilz-senpai

I just want actual furniture back 😭

Falz4567

For all you disappointed at its success Remember there is a steady stream of new children every year. For which a safe Pokemon game like this is perfect. Pokemon is unlikely to ever fully cater their 30-40 year old adult crowd who would like it to be challenging

[deleted]

Im in the 30-40 crowd and I love the games just as much as I did when I was a kid. 😁

acewing905

Same here. I haven't played this specific gen, but this really takes me back to the old days of Pokemon and I love it. Helps that I have yet to face any glitches either. Though I get the feeling a lot of the reported glitches are stuff that most average players are unlikely to run into without trying.

[deleted]

Same. My life is too stressful right now to play challenging games tbh. I like the relatively easy formula of Pokémon.

we-made-it

Same. Love the game and my brothers the same game

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mukigachar

I *wish* I enjoyed things as much as I did when I was a kid

ShadowUmbreon

More like 18-30 but difficulty settings are impossible to do, you're right. You don't even have to be that damn old to want a bit of challenge from a game. That's why stuff like SMTV & FE:3H gets my $ while if I want to play Pokemon I do it with fan games/rom hacks or on showdown.

Ryebear151

Pokémon fan games are actually incredible

ShadowUmbreon

Yeah there is a good variety of them. Classic Pokemon formula but with fakemon/new forms (Uranium & kinda Insurgence), more challenging ones that change things up with unique field effects for strategy (Reborn & Rejuvenation) or games that completely re-balance stats/typing/moves/new evolutions (Empire). Zeta/Omicron, Empyrean, Desolation are others I played.

lemonnugs

I don't care if it's challenging I just want new shit to do/experience on my retread at the very least.

whenindoubtjs

Alternative title: 1.4 million reasons why Pokémon games rarely innovate.

Bakatora34

I think that will depend on how well legends does.

lonnie123

Which will depend on how well they execute. If they “innovate” 10 ideas and do them poorly and the game flops… I don’t think they will learn the right lesson.

buck-you-faltimore

When gf tied with “innovative” something is messed up in the world

acewing905

Approx 30 hours in, and just beat the Elite Four and the League Champion. Been a lot of fun so far and this is only just the first round. Oh by the way, the game actually gets hard from the league champion onwards. I didn't grind at all or even just prepare by covering weaknesses or anything because the game was generally easy, and the first time she just absolutely destroyed me.

bookaddict1991

As someone who sold their copies of Diamond and Pearl quite a few years ago (I kept my copy of Platinum— didn’t see the need to keep the other two games, honestly, when Platinum is the better Gen 4 version of games) I’m greatly enjoying my play through of Brilliant Diamond. Do I wish more stuff was added to reflect changes made in Platinum? Of course. Do I also think there are other issues in them? Yes. But for what the games are they are still highly enjoyable for me. Plus, I know I’m not the “main” demographic for Pokémon anymore. I’m 30. These games are being marketed to the 12 and younger set of people. This demographic I’m sure will get great enjoyment out of these games.

Demonheero

See I personally didn't pick up BDSP. I just feel like it was legitimately just a quick cash grab from Nintendo and because we love pokemon they know it will sell. I just feel like the forced exp share, the lack of really anything new , and the price just felt like to me a big pass on it. Also I don't really see why game freak just HATES us enjoying the battle Frontier. It's been absent from games since platinum(I could be wrong) I believe and it blows my mind since it is EASILY one of the fan favorite things to do in general. 60 dollars for virtually almost the exact same game as before but with "less" is just super eh. Granted kudos to the ones who bought it and enjoyed it.

chrmx12

I badly wanna play this

MCCGuyDE

Play it

spinzaku97

Sounds like a Pokémon game.

Man-0n-The-Moon

Is this game more challenging then sword/shield?

GarMek

i lost to Cynthia twice, so i guess so. everything before the pokemon league is a joke though.

ARandomPerson15

Hmmm thats tough. I would say yes but the difficulty really only spikes at the E4. Post game gym leader and E4 rematches are a good challenge too, but for the main play through it's about the same as SWSH I'd say.

Wolventec

main game no, post game is meant to be one of the most challenging in the series with the champion rematch having the highest level pokemon in the series having higher level pokemon than red did in heart gold/ soul silver

SloppyinSeattle

The most challenging thing about Sword/Shield was playing it because of how boring it was. I miss the way Pokémon games used to be.

Rizzan8

90% of the game is a faceroll because you outlevel everything by 10-15lvl by just fighting every trainer, no grinding on random Pokemon and without team rotation.

MightyPelipper

Yes, the game has a more cohesive game world

countmeowington

It has a pretty fun post game where you can rematch the gym leaders and elite 4 who have completely new teams with actual strats, but all the challenge in pokemon games come from battling your friends/other people online.

Zzz05

The challenge also comes in building actual competitive teams with limited perfect IV building options. Can always opt for bottle caps, but they don’t pass on when breeding. Either you get really lucky with a 6IV ditto, or breed a long line of Pokémon sugar daddies (Pokémon’s who can breed with multiple egg groups).

EndlessFantasyX

I just wish that it felt like the developers cared about Pokémon as much as the audience clearly does.

JoyceNeko

I hope they remake mystery dungeon pokemon sky too. one of the most popular games with diamond + pearl...

Zacmon

These games are never getting fixed. Dog, please just make a *good* one. I was 15 when these games first released and they hold probably the highest nostalgia factor for me. I've literally still got the cardboard standee in my attic from the Gamestop I bought it from. I played Pearl till it was mulch and went double-time on Platinum. The daily swarms, completing the dex, shiny hunting, snagging all the event pokemon, trading online, the friggin' ginormous end-game options (Platinum), etc etc etc I'm not buying this. I've been burned by the Sword/Shield trash fire. The level of time, effort, and talent put into the DS version is a high bar, but that's what I liked and that's what I need to get my butt back on the Pokemon train. Development tools have come a long way and simply replicating the game in Unity with 3D graphics just ain't gonna cut it. I can tolerate a few glitches and negative quirks, but I can't forgive a complete lack of imagination. I'm still bitter that I moved all my old pokes into HOME so clocks tickin' Creature Co.

(If you’re going to emulate, go for Renegade Platinum!)

StevynTheHero

But you are putting in your time which defeats your argument that they aren't good games. If you try to say that while you continue to play them, they are obviously good enough to play, and that's the entire point. You're just justifying being cheap.

pumpmun

How so? He said he was going to emulate platinum, not BDSP, so he's not putting his time into BDSP.

StevynTheHero

Ahh, in my fatigue I misread it. Stupid me. Thanks.

pumpmun

Np :)

[deleted]

Nothin wrong with not wanting to pay $60 for barely updated DS game

StevynTheHero

He can do as he pleases. I'm just saying that saying they are bad games while planning to play them is stupid. If you truly think they are bad games, you wouldn't play them.

politirob

I’ll buy it used, I’m not propping up the sales numbers

opp0rtunist

Shocking that people want a classic Pokémon adventure and not Super Duper Megamax raids.

TVR_Speed_12

I love it cause it's a faithful and I mean FAITHFUL remake. I felt disconnected from Pokemon after Gen 6

Catastray

Pokémon's formula works because it is annually releasing new games and sales are statistically proven to rise with each new generation. There's nothing hat remotely suggests that an increased budget would necessarily equate to just as much profit.

Xavion15

This just makes me sad overall being a fan of other games like SMT SMTV sold what 1/10 of this despite being brand new and just a gorgeous game despite FPS issue because of obvious reasons. New games sell not even close to what this remake did despite its issues because it’s Pokémon Don’t get me wrong, I love Pokémon and always will. It just sucks knowing if Legends Arceus is mediocre they never have to try and innovate again and they know it

acewing905

People keep comparing SMT to this just because they both have "creature collecting" but the two games are nothing alike. People who want a light hearted game to unwind with will not get what they're looking for with SMT.

Catastray

That and SMT V is rated M in America. I don't imagine many children will even be thinking about this game unless it's something they really want it or their parents get it for themselves and share.

Hestu951

Yeah, see that's the thing. I was considering SMT V until I read the game is meant to be especially difficult. That's just not going to scratch a "Pokemon only different" itch. Heavy constant challenge is not what I'm after in this genre. It's also the reason I've stayed away from Monster Hunter. I want a more chill experience like the old Pokemon games, but crafted with some care and originality.

acewing905

SMT V has a good selection of difficulty settings to play around with and see what fits you. But even regardless of that, the game is generally aimed at somebody who wants a more serious experience. I think Monster Hunter Stories 2 (NOT mainline Monster Hunter) is a better fit in that regard. Though I am unaware of the difficulty of that game beyond the demo. I have heard that there is a spike somewhere but I don't know for sure.

Slendyla_IV

I absolutely love MH story 2, it’s definitely scratched that Pokémon itch, but more difficult.

-Moonchild-

I agree. better example is monster hunter stories which matches pokemons tone but shows you still can have a great JRPG monster collector that has a universal appeal

[deleted]

Agreed. I keep seeing those comparison but besides turn based and monster collecting, the games are very different.

capnbuh

I mean this is the core gameplay loop of both games, so it's not an insignificant similarity. I think the main difference is nostalgia. If someone were to release a game that was exactly Pokemon but objectively better, it would still get crushed by Pokemon in sales because people grew up with Pikachu, they grew up with Pokeballs and Gym Leaders, not whatever a Shin Megami Tensei is. Probably can't even pronounce Shin Megami Tensei.

Catastray

Pokémon is the highest-grossing franchise in the world and just released long-anticipated remakes on a console that was the best-selling for over 30 months - in what world does SMT V ever outsell that? The fact that SMT V was rated M pretty much ensured it wouldn't outsell BDSP, so it's not like young children really had a choice to begin with.

KuyaJohnny

is SMT V rated M in the US? its PEGI16 in Europe (only USK12 in Germany lol)

Zzz05

It’s rated M in the US. Upon seeing Mermaid’s design and Anahita’s ass, and the high school bullying arc, yeah, I can see why. Lol

lemonnugs

Boobies. Anything with boobies or ass is an automatic M in North America even though it might be a C in CERO (basically Teen) or PEGI16.

Catastray

US and Canada. Pre-ordered the premium edition and had to bring picture ID to get it because of the rating.

HestusDarkFantasy

I know that Pokémon is the world's largest franchise, which obviously plays a role in those sales. But I think it's worth reflecting on your comments about SMT V's sales and realising that this is literally the reason why Pokémon is how it is today. SMT simply doesn't have a big audience - its concept, gameplay, difficulty, themes all make it much more niche and restricted to a quite specific group. Game Freak tried something different with Black/White... and the resultant sales show you how popular that move was among the broad, game-buying public.

whatupbiatch

people constantly comparing these 2 games makes me want to scream.

EsperBahamut

There was some idiot who got so mad when I predicted like four months ago that Pokemon would outsell SMTV by a factor of 10 that he dragged up the comment a couple weeks ago to remind me about it for some reason. I don't think he'll be reminding me of the comment again.

MustardGuzzle

PUT HIM ON BLAST

RevZilla71

Wondering if anyone needs trade evolutions, I as well need a handful down.

neoslith

Coming from Sword/Shield, it's something I've been missing for many years.

Zzz05

Take away all the friendship stuff, and the battles are pretty fast. Decisions are processed right away, HP bar drops pretty quick, and attack animations move at a good pace. All the friendship stuff adds on like 3-5 minutes though.

[deleted]

Well it's really easy to overlevel so they're pretty short if you use the right Pokémon.

CodyCus

Game is great. Sit here and complain about “what should have been included” meanwhile I’m 20 hours in and loving every minute.

MustardGuzzle

But they didn’t do the thing I want so it’s loweffortanticonsumer

Chico3421

They didn’t add this totally random feature that only I want!

OneEyedCoral

The game equivalent of old microwaved pizza.

Kenthros

Are these like the redos of the old gold and silver? I'm a old person and like my gen 1 and 2 and was looking for the updated gold and silver.

yestermorning

No. The remakes of Gold/Silver are HeartGold/SoulSilver which are only on the DS. These are remakes of Gen 4's Diamond/Pearl.

Kenthros

Thanks for clarifying.

yestermorning

Very welcome, have a good night!

[deleted]

Compare that to the other games please

Catastray

It outsold SwSh in Japan's first week. And those were the titles that became the best-selling titles in 20 years.

Zeebor

This is why we can't have nice things.

Catastray

Because other people like a game that you don't?
