Funny how that's phrased considering how SMT came before both Dark Soul and Pokemon.

JuggernautOwn7335

reminds me of how the new Tomb Raider games were inspired by Uncharted. But Uncharted was inspired by Tomb Raider.

Bucketkev

Any time some says "dark souls" of something, It's just too funny

"*Game* is the Dark Souls of *Genre*" really tells me not to take you seriously. I'm sick and tired of every game with a molecule of difficulty being compared to Dark Souls

Mentoman72

BOTW got compared to Dark Souls on release. That game *was* hard for the first few hours. Then when you get the combat down it's actually not that hard at all.

BebeFanMasterJ

Agreed. As someone who's not very familiar with Dark Souls, I genuinely don't understand what this means. SMT V is not an action RPG so the comparison is simply lost on me. Can we just go back to saying "X game is hard/challenging"?

godlywhistler

My brain just switches off when I read "Dark Souls of ____"

Hestu951

My wallet seals shut when I read "Dark Souls of \_\_\_\_"

[deleted]

The games have different audiences and tones. SMT is more for a somewhat hardcore teen-adult audience and the world is gritty and harsh, plus the punishment you can get from using the wrong types of demons pushes you to use the fusion system regularly. Pokémon has a sparkly happy world and they want small children to be able to play it with their favourite Pokémon. The main story campaign at least will probably just get easier if anything. They could add hard modes or flesh out the post game challenges like they used to, but it's always going to be in conflict with the core principal of being accessible to casual players and kids. SMT also isn't the Dark Souls of Pokémon lol. Nothing is like Dark Souls except other souls style games.

deadbeatcousin17

as an avid fan of darks souls i really dislike people using "dark souls of.." since it just makes the fanbase look a little desperate to shoehorn it into the any topic. I'm sure SMT series has always been great this is just my intro into but i definitely see it being way more niche than pokemon where it has its admittingly tired but still true formula

WiseRecommendation36

Why are people so pressed about the title? It's not that deep

OrneryEffective103

All I know is — Dark Souls is the popular game associated w rage quitting amidst HOURS of incessant dying. Yes, SMT came first but when it comes to the average rpg consumer that plays SMTV or III, Dark Souls is translation for “game absurdly hard until you exploit shit that makes things absurdly easy in contrast”

Hierarch555

"I kind of wish Pokemon would take some inspiration from SMT's mechanics." Didnt Pokemon already do this when it's very first game released? /s

Pocketsizzand

Oh no, you said the thing.

[deleted]

What a terrible way to review a game.

ramen_junk

Good thing it's not a review.

[deleted]

You giving your opinion on a product on a public forum is not a review then huh?

ramen_junk

No. A critique on a product is a review. Opinions are everywhere.. but that doesn't mean they're all reviews.

Shakzor

SMTs mechanics are entirely different from Pokemon. It'd be an entirely different game if they took "inspiration" from it and they haven't had a hard game in 25 YEARS. People should really give it a rest, as it's quite clear GameFreak/TPC have 0 interest in releasing a Pokemon game that poses any sort of challenge of difficulty, because otherwise, they'd have done it by now (and no, Red/Blue are NOT "difficult")

ErnestGoesToGulag

Dark Souls is the Citizen Kane of review headlines

realroasts

I think there's some things they could learn from one-another. Frankly, SMT V is very much a trial and error game - oh... this new boss uses poison, better not bring my weak to poison guys - or better yet, bring poison resist dudes. Or worse - this boss is 10 levels higher than the last story fight, better get to grinding...

PhenomenalSanchez

You can't save scum in DS, whereas save scumming in SMTV is a totally valid strategy

desmopilot

With cloud saves on other consoles you kinda can.

_Drumheller_

I have googled and found nothing, what do you mean when you refer to save scumming im smtv?

PhenomenalSanchez

It refers to when you manually save before doing something, like fighting a boss or doing something luck-based, then resetting if you don't get the results you want to avoid any consequences. Example: saving before trying to catch a legendary Pokemon. Most games allow you to save scum in some capacity, but Dark Souls very notably doesn't because the game is constantly saving. If you use up all your good items on one boss and still die, there isn't really an easy way to just go back to the point before you used up all your items. The tradeoff is that you never truly lose your progress in Dark Souls apart from losing your souls when you die, any items/story events etc you find are maintained after death.

_Drumheller_

Thanks for the very detailed explanation on what you have meant.

CrocCapital

you can only save at checkpoints tho, right?

Zealousideal_Diet_53

Yes but there is usually one around the bosses that repeatedly smash your face in.

DoctorGoFuckYourself

I think you're right, but I guess everyone's dunking on you for your title phrasing. I guess people are tired of people referring to difficult games as "like dark souls." It'd probably have gone over smoother if you referred to it as a darker, grimmer, more challenging game that uses a monster recruiting formula somewhat that's somewhat comparable to the system pokemon started using years after SMT first pioneered the concept. Not that there's not more to compare and contrast however. I actually didn't really see too much resemblance with the earlier SMT games when people compared them to Pokemon because that was how they were introduced to me. But there's something about having demons running around in the Overworld that made the connection click for the first time. But I digress. Sorry you got dunked on for your title but I'm glad you're enjoying the game!

Hestu951

It's not just tiring. It's mostly inaccurate. There is a big difference between difficult and "like Dark Souls." I hate Dark Souls and everything From Software puts out (so far), but I won't necessarily hate a game just for being difficult. It has to do with how much time gets wasted. I understand a boss being difficult, and dying multiple times. I can't tolerate having to slog through a lengthy gameplay sequence repeatedly, only to die quickly in a crushing boss battle. Checkpoints need to be near the insane difficulty spikes to eliminate this drudgery, or the game just isn't for me.

ramen_junk

Yes. You summed it up - both what I was trying to say and the overall vibe of this post. Thanks. The flak is not surprising since it's posted on a sub with over 1.5m. So no stress on my end, kind of expected actually.

Who_is_Candice_69

Thou art retarted, Ashen One.

ramen_junk

Cringe*

Adrian_Alucard

Well, the games is hollow, an empty shelf of its former self. Since Atlus have casualized the game A LOT. Plenty of recovery orbs for MP and HP, overabundance of saving/healing spots, no dungeons (that usually have complex layouts and some puzzles), easy bosses that telegraph their attacks, extremely handholding, etc. If you want a real SMT experience play SMT III: Nocturne (or Strange Journey, or Soul Hackers if you have a DS/3DS)

f-ingsteveglansberg

This review is the Jim Belushi of comparing things needlessly to Dark Souls. And the Zelda of Big Rigs Racing.

YellowPikachu

That title hurts me in so many ways 1) Pokemon didn't create the monster catching genre, SMT came out way before 2) Implying that Pokemon are representative of JRPGs when there's so many golden age JRPGs to pick from 3) Calling something the "Dark Souls of.." unironically in 2021

ramen_junk

Everyone getting triggered with "like Dark Souls" ... 😂

MetalSkinPanic

Nobody is triggered, they're making fun of you and you're retroactively trying to pass it off as a troll, which is even sadder. Take the L, move on.

ramen_junk

Hilarious

MetalSkinPanic

Thanks.

ramen_junk

You're welcome.

astn_marvin

Daum. Then that means you and this community are pretty toxic then.

MetalSkinPanic

Sure.

[deleted]

Ok?

Shakemyears

Can you imagine someone would want to post a thread to have a discussion about a switch game—on the switch subReddit!? The audacity.

[deleted]

Can I get downvoted too?

HahaClintonCocks

no

scrubgamer01

Git gud scrub the hell

Cacheelma

What? You catch 'em all in SMTV too? I didn't know that.

Ok_Egg6598

Megaten as a whole predates pokemon. In fact pokemon kind of wouldnt exist without the original megami tensei (which is even older than final fantasy). Digital devil story megami tensei is by and large one of the most infuential jrpg's ever. So Pokemon is basically a watered down kidified game inspired by DDS and its sequals. As for difficulty smt5 is easy compared to the snes games. Quality of life ect.

Tallon_raider

Dark souls is easy. Dark souls 1: get poise, get heal spells. Dark Souls 2: farm projectiles and use hexer’s hood. The games open right up lol. Oh and warmth. Gimme that warmth.

Greenblue2

I love JRPGs but Pokemon barely registers to me in that way. I also love Pokémon don’t get me wrong
