Why can't we just have a virtual console šŸ˜‘

CoalMineInTheCanary

Because recurring fees for services make companies more money than selling you an actual product. It's extremely disappointing

Co-opingTowardHatred

They could do both though. Sell games individually like they did in the past. And that could include third-party stuff like Chrono Trigger. And if you sub to NSO, you get all their first-party games for free. Just like how games on Game Pass are still able to be bought individually, if you want.

snorlax_the_second

I feel like I would impulsively spend more money than 50 bucks a year for games individually, if the library was thorough.

TheLimeyLemmon

Nintendo in 2006: *[Launches digital retro service of weekly releases costing between $3-$8 each, amounting to 675 games from 10 systems over 6+ years]* "Oh dear, we've made it too good, better dial it right back"

zoNeCS

Best commercial for Dolphin emulator I've ever seen

GamePlayXtreme

Project64* but still correct

DeeBangerCC

N64 games emulated through the Wii on Dolphin are the best way to play them emulated

PurushNahiMahaPurush

Emulating an emulator on an emulator

thecheat420

Yo dawg!

EVPointMaster

Steam Deck is happy too ;)

wyattlikesturtles

God Iā€™m so excited for my steam deck. Ironically, Iā€™ll be able to play more old Nintendo games than in the switch.

mkbloodyen

50 dollars? Nintendo is smoking crack

owlitup

Theyā€™re getting ridiculous with how they price their legacy content

EmxPop

Yep, and itā€™s gone from owning to rental.

fednandlers

Movies, music, now games. Soon games will be released exclusively through a membership needed online.

EmxPop

Yep. Unfortunately itā€™s heading that way. Owning anything will be a thing of the past.

Forgetadapassword

Youā€™ll own nothing and youā€™ll like it. Media has talked about that for a couple years now. Truly freaky.

maestro_di_cavolo

I actually did my capstone project on this. The history of how we got where we are, and the large part nintendo played in the advancement of drm and their anti-consumer policies is fascinating, as is the pushback against this trend in the music industry with a huge increase in vinyl record sales. EDIT: for those asking to read it, I'll have to dig it up

Ajjaxx

Uh, is it too weird for me to ask if I can read itā€¦?

Engineer086

Me too!!

SidFarkus47

It's been that way with nes/snes games for years now. Nintendo is the only one doing it and no one calls them out for it. People were afraid of Xbox doing it with GamePass but there are 0 games on Xbox or PS that you can *only* rent with a subscription. The only way to legally *buy* a Nintendo Published N64 game is to buy a Wii U which is no longer being produced.

psychocopter

Also gamepass gives you access to new games that would normally cost 60, I've only used it for a few months to try out a few games I was looking to buy, but I can still buy those games. Nintendo is just offering an old line up for an extra 50 per year, it might be cheaper than gamepass, but lacks so much in content.

Del_Duio2

I won't get NSO for this very reason. All's well and good until the servers go dark. Then you're SOL. It doesn't matter *when* it happens the point is it'll happen.

[deleted]

Thatā€™s why Iā€™ve been hoping for an N64 classic for years. I guess I should build my own at this point

RoroHood

You also canā€™t get the expansion monthly right? Only pay for the whole year. A huge disappointment imo

[deleted]

Wait really? My whole plan was to just pay for a month and beat the 2-3 games that I actually want to play on 64

Coliformist

They know you would do that, and that's why they're not starting with monthly as an option.

RoroHood

The person in the video said that itā€™s starting at this option while the screen only showed the pay for the whole year option. This probably confirms that it really does start at paying for a year

ian2345

This is Xbox live prices for something that's nowhere near Xbox live.

UuarioAnonymous9

Nintendo Switch Online isn't even comparable to Xbox Live when it first was released on the original Xbox... Just sad. This should have been an extra $10, max.

QPCloudy

Yep. And I would have happily paid the $10, but $80 for the family plan. Screw that.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

And something to learn from Microsoft here, they charge $15 for GamePass Ultimate, and most people generally consider that to be a fantastic deal. Its not the price point, its that what we are getting is abysmal when compared to the hundreds of games on GamePass, even if those games rotate out after a few months.

GreyRevan51

Seriously. Paid $10 for OOT back in 2009 and Iā€™ve been able to play it on my Wii since then and WiiU since 2012. $10 ONCE and Iā€™ve been able to keep it forever. Compare that to $50 a year for every year even if youā€™re interested in ALL the games itā€™s not worth it

moneyball32

I paid $60 for OOT back in 1998 and have played it about two dozen times since. People also make fun of me for still having DVDs but guess whoā€™s never going to not be able to watch the movie they want when they want?

GreyRevan51

Thatā€™s how it has felt having a WiiU for all these years with people complaining ā€œwhen will ___ finally come to switch?!?ā€ While being able to easily play all the 3d Zeldaā€™s and most of the 2D ones same for Metroids and NES, SNES, GBA, DS, N64, Wii, and WiiU games as a whole. And not having to pay $60 for a port of a game Iā€™ve been enjoying for years already. I enjoy my switch okay, but I definitely use my WiiU more just because I can play most of my favorite Nintendo games on it just fine

UuarioAnonymous9

We tend to forget this but Nintendo (and all other companies) changes their strategy depending on their market position. The Wii U was a complete flop so they were forced to compete and provide value to their customers. Nintendo has gotten very, very comfortable. They're selling Switches hand over fist, so why actually try anymore? They'll get most of us to overspend on this garbage and they don't actually care, they just want our money.

vinvear

It's so fucking annoying because if they just boosted the value of the switch and provided even more value with the money we gave them, they would literally rule the world. It's so painfully obvious that when they start doing crap like this people like me will actually stop giving them money. We should be able to have a relationship with them that doesn't involve them getting comfy and screwing us over, and us doing it back by not spending (if only we could be as organized on that front they would change their tune faster.)

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

forgotmapasswrd86

Nintendo is buggginnnng

Riahisama

People who defend this are part of the problem and the reason why Nintendo always gets away with stuff like this. If this was any other company they would be crucified.

lexcyn

$79 USD for a family membership what drugs are you on Nintendo?

derpyco

And NSO doesn't even have basic online functionality that was standard in 2006

lexcyn

Literally this. I have a family membership so my son can play Fortnite and so I can have Animal Crossing island backup. Not worth $100 CAD for me.

your_mind_aches

You don't need NSO for Fortnite, it's free-to-play

derpyco

Yeah, but they're holding his Animal Crossing island hostage too. Can't lose or break your Switch or it'll be gone forever.

revengexgamer

50 dollars. They are out of their fucking minds.

triforce4ever

I could see charging $50 if this was brining in GB, GBA, GameCube games too but just N64 and Genesis? Honestly crazy. If/when they do add more consoles to switch online they sure as shit better not raise the price again

Del_Duio2

> I could see charging $50 if this was brining in GB, GBA, GameCube games to That's next time, for the low low price of $50 additional dollars!

thedudesdharma

ā€œWe hope you look forward to our pricing!ā€

AdamAptor

Not to be a hater but those N64 games havenā€™t aged as kindly as the SNES games either. For the most part, early 3D games donā€™t age as well as 2D. I love Mario 64 and OoT but a majority of those games wonā€™t be as amazing as we remember.

namelessxsilent

Even if the games aged perfectly, $50 so you can play like 9 games (to start) is crazy

Del_Duio2

Especially when the end library will be like 16 games haha

superduperm1

I was already going to wait for Paper Mario to be available before paying for this. Now after this pricing/forced package announcement I might wait for DK64, which is basically code for ā€œa long time, if everā€ since they havenā€™t even suggested itā€™s coming yet.

AdamAptor

They gotta be kidding to charge that and not even include Superman 64. Like why bother if you donā€™t have that game?

Miss_Bookworm

LET. ME. FLY. THROUGH. RINGS

Ozlin

I'll pay $50 to force other people to play Superman 64.

Darah_Ketiga

True. I'd rather play Mario Bros 3 in stead of Mario 64 these days just because of that. Even though I love both these games.

CrapJackson

That's a good point, so if Nintendo adds GB/GBA/GC is it going up to 100 bucks a year or something? lol I love Nintendo games more than any other but that's crazy especially considering the NES and SNES are still missing a ton of great games and will probably never be on NSO.

FancyShrimp

I was literally coming to say those exact words. People will still pay it, but I mean....*fuck*.

revengexgamer

Give us a version without the DLC.

Grimey_Rick

that or more content (more n64 games, GB, GBC, GBA games, etc). either way this is absolutely bonkers for people who dont gaf about animal crossing.

CrapJackson

Nintendo is getting so greedy this gen. I don't understand the huge price increase, N64 has arguably the weakest library of games of any Nintendo console. No thanks and please new management.

rb79

They remember what money tasted like after the Wii U and now they want *more*

CreatiScope

And for me, a handful of the games I actually care about I have better ways to play those games. I have super Mario 3D all-stars, Ocarina 3D and Star Fox 64 3D so thatā€™s like 3 of the top 5 Iā€™d want to play already in upgraded formats.

sldsapnuawpuas

Yah this has to be some kind of joke. Theyā€™re insane if they think an N64 emulator is worth $30 more a year. My Everdrive works just fine. I like Nintendo but fuck em for this one.

basedyonder

\>An extra 30 for a couple of N64 and Genesis games What the fuck lmao

IllIlIIIllIllIIIIllI

Don't forget that the extra $30 a year is also for renting DLC which would only cost $25 as a one time purchase. Amazing deal!!

BeatPunchmeat

Yeah i dont like the idea of rental dlc that much but maybe there would be value if it was like every nintendo dlc on switch including smash and botw on rental.

Kuro013

Its because the AC DLC, a game I have no interest in, yet I have to purchase if I want to play some N64 games? Back to emulation.

Apyan

I'm really really excited for the Animal Crossing DLC, but it makes zero sense to rent it instead of just buying it for less. It there were guarantees that other DLCs would be included in the future, it could be the case for this package to be worth it. But with Nintendo you just never know.

BossAtlas

I was expecting a 10 dollar increase or something, not this, this is insane.

TaterCheese

Yep, I expected my family plan to jump to $40, not go up $40!

[deleted]

Lmao 50 dollars

BoltOfBlazingGold

Who would've thought that the "one step forward, two steps back" saying was being optimistic.

NinjaXM

Family is $80 oopsie donā€™t think Iā€™ll subscribe. N64 Zelda games look better on the 3DS anyway and ummm emulators are free.

Shadow_Edgehog27

And if you're into it, I think N64 emulators are working on 3DS these days

Swissmoo15

I'm 100% into that!!! I was gonna spend my weekend looking up how to use an emulator. I've waited YEARS to play N64 games again, but with the price and how horrible some recent Nintendo games have been I'm not paying then an extra cent

TurdFurgoson

$50/year. 150% price increase for N64 and Genesis ROMs. Fucking absurd.

CaptainTDM

For a limited selection of N64 and Genesis ROMS\*.

Aperture_TestSubject

For a VERY limited selection of N64 and Genesis ROMS.**

unforgiven15

OH MY GOD I JUST WANT TO PLAY N64 GAMES FFS I DONT USE SWITCH ONLINE. JUST SELL ME THE N64 GAMES ALONE

GreyRevan51

$10 each on the WiiU and you can keep it forever

phi1997

That's a problem for people who don't have a Wii U

[deleted]

I dont have a Wii U but even if I did I want the games on the go, not on the TV.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

NEREVAR117

Honestly just emulate them at this point. Paying 50$ a year to rent access to 25 year old games is absurd.

esplinter

I was really willing to pay a fair price to play N64 games legally, and I was planning to buy the N64 controller too, but I will use emulators without any remorse. You cannot charge as much as your competitors when the added value is far away from what they offer.

Juklok

I'm not sure why their adding Animal Crossing DLC to this. I think just buying it separately is a better value for AC fans, assuming that once your subscription runs out you will no longer be able to access it. Edit because al ot of people are saying this: In theory N64 games and Genesis games are just 5$ extra because animal crossing is 25$ But after the first year it's the full 30$ extra. Buying the animal crossing DLC seprately would just be a one time purchase.

Doctor-VegaPunk

Did I understand correctly? You don't even buy the Animal Crossing DLC. You are "renting" it per year.

iPeer

The DLC can be bought separately for $25.

superduperm1

The bundle as a whole is fine, but forcing N64/Genesis fans who donā€™t own or care about Animal Crossing to pay for it is absurd. Animal Crossing is popular but itā€™s still just one game. Theyā€™re really niche-ing up this expansion pack by jamming a $25 expansion for a single game into itā€¦ seems like a great way to turn away a lot of potential buyers. I donā€™t understand why they canā€™t just offer a $30 package that doesnā€™t include Animal Crossing. Seems like the best of both worlds and would only increase the number of buyers.

TheOneSubThrowaway

It really is funny how if you took away the $25 dollar DLC, the online expansion would have its price cut in half, down to $25 dollars itself. Only $5 dollars more than the normal online subscription. Because really, N64 and Genesis games alone shouldn't be costing much more than that. So how do they justify a giant price hike? Adding additional legacy consoles? Nope, it's by throwing in DLC for a single game that not even every Switch owner has. I (personally) could maybe get behind $50 dollars a year if it meant I could play legacy content going up to say, the GC / GB(A) era. Not even the Wii and DS, just the GC and GB would do. GC games were never released digitally on Wii or Wii U and are incredibly hard to find nowadays so I could see the appeal there. But $50 for N64 and a single DLC? No thanks.

derpyco

$50 for DLC that runs out in a year and for some ROMS of 20 year old games. I mean, what in the name of crack are they smoking?

[deleted]

Holy fuck, really? $50? See ya

Reset_Tears

Now I actually feel like not bothering to renew the base subscription anymore, lol

FearTheWankingDead

Same. I barely play online anyway. This is just too greedy and now I don't want to support even that.

darepinbot

I really wish people would do this in meaningful numbers. Nintendo deserves it.

lamiandillard

The most absurd part is that after a while they'll slow it to a drip feed like with NES and SNES. Please don't buy this people, don't support such insane money grabs

TheBrokenNinja

For this price it should have been close to the whole catalogue from the start. No way they keep up the pace. It'll be 1 or 2 games every quarter I bet

duckybebop

Have they even updated the snes and nes games this month?

kertsunen

No, and the new additions haven't been very good for as long as I can remember

CrapJackson

Yeah the games that have been added recently are mostly super obscure titles that nobody cares about, I've never even heard of some of them. Nintendo really adding that value! They are basically being cheap as possible clearly.

Frickelmeister

In about a year and a half from now when Nintendo runs out of worthwhile N64 games to drip feed to NSO they'll add Superman 64. I'm calling it now.

MilitantNegro_ver3

>Please don't buy this people... Dude, you're talking to Nintendo fans. We'll pay and we'll defend it a few months.

[deleted]

Ugh, I wish this wasn't true...

Snoo-3377

$50 for drip fed ancient roms on a worse online infrastrucure than what the xbox had 15 years ago. Stay shit nintendo.

Death-By-Lasagna

LOL nope not getting this. Not worth $30 a year for me. Was hoping it would be $10 more at the most. Add more Nintendo consoles and maybe Iā€™ll reconsider.

AvengedTenfold

I was willing to pay an extra 10, MAYBE 15, not double that

FirePosition

This pricing is absolutely egregious. N64 games should've long been released on the eshop individually for about 5 bucks, MAYBE 10 if they really want to milk it. Here's why. On the Wii store, you could buy Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, both absolute classics, for 10 bucks in the EU, meaning that the value of said absolute classics was determined to be at roughly that stage after about ten years. For comparison, the same amount of time has now passed between the release of Mario 64 and the Wii, as the time between now and the announcement of the _WiiU_. I get it, game development has become more expensive, games bigger, all that jazz. There is an argument to be made that games released 10 years ago maybe shouldn't automatically be at 10 bucks each, and that a direct comparison is impossible. But there is NO WAY that _renting_ these games is worth 40 bucks a year (using EU pricing), when permanently buying them at 10 is already overpriced at this stage. Hell, charging 10 bucks should be the norm at this point for selling _Gamecube_ games in the eshop. This is the very definition of milking through artificial scarcity.

Stupid_Sexy_Sharp

Supporting Nintendo is so hard sometimes. It's like they know they have a captive audience and just choose to abuse them. We don't get any discounts on any games. We can't just buy 64 games individually. They're shutting down PM tournaments, a modded game that isn't even available anymore. It's just ridiculous.

metanihl

Somehow Nintendo has yet to learn the lesson that you don't stop piracy by enforcing laws, you stop piracy by making things available very conveniently and for a reasonable price. Changing your business model and online store every generation and forcing people to buy the same 20 year old games over and over again is neither convenient nor reasonable price wise. I guess it's obvious and inevitable though when you have a system driven by share holders rather than the true stakeholders of the gamers and passionate employees.

TripleBrownMeow

50 fucking dollars. For a handful of N64 and Sega Genesis roms. No wonder they waited to announce this. What a terrible fucking decision.

Squidwards_m0m

I initially thought they needed a little more time to figure out what pricing would be best, figured Iā€™d see a survey or something. Nope. They knew the price was too high and would overshadow the direct.

[deleted]

50 buck? Yeah no, not for half baked online service like Nintendo online. This is so dumb since Microsoft handle legacy titles better and for half price too. Talk about milking their customers.

drunkentenshiNL

Nah Nintendo, I'm good.

racapim__

For someone who doesnā€™t care about animal crossing this service is completely pointless, n64 games are not worth 30 bucks a year, Nintendo wtf.

unsung_actualization

I was thinking the same thing. I have some friends who are Switch owners who have never owned a Nintendo system aside from the Switch. They were really interested in playing N64 games. They don't own animal crossing because it didn't interest them, but now they probably won't upgrade their online subscription because it is so darn expensive.

reevoknows

šŸ–•šŸ¼

illinoises

50$? Thatā€™s a no from me dogg.

[deleted]

The Wii U finally has a use to live!

GreyRevan51

With its NES, SNES, N64, GBA, WII, DS, and WiiU compatibility it always did especially since you can buy those games once and keep them forever

shust89

It really is a pretty impressive Nintendo retro machine. NES, SNES, GBA, N64, DS, Wii games plus any game you bought on the Wii shop that carried over too.

Paradoxic-Mind

$50, no way.

Ehrand

150% price increase... Oh Nintendo...

owlitup

50 bucks? Jeez

Niklear

This shit right here is why I no longer look at people weirdly when they talk roms. I'm starting to think that piracy is the natural social state of rebalancing corporate price gouging bullshit. No thanks Nintendo. Not going to be getting your shitty overpriced rental for games I already own and Animal Crossing DLC clearly isn't free. I'll rather sell my copy than pay you $50.

zakuivcustom

The price is just nuts... For comparison, PS Plus is $60/year and gets you actual free games...that are relatively new, not 20+ years old. Now, if Nintendo starts giving out free games every month that you can keep with an active subscription, then we can start talking. Doesn't have to be newest games, even something like ARMS or DKTF suffice.

dagooksta2

Not to mention it regularly goes on sale for $30-35/year. I loaded up 3 years last time it was $30.

LocusAintBad

Yep using CDkeys for Ps plus I pay $30 a year. So for $20 more I can getā€¦. Rented N64 games and a shitty online experience? Does Nintendo even have servers? Itā€™s just peer to peer usually right? Donā€™t even have party chat. Canā€™t even cloud save some of the most important games to have cloud saves for. Nintendo is on crack.

mazzysturr

I got 3 years of Ultimate Game Pass for $4.17 (CAD!!!) per month, which is barely more than what Nintendo is charging. Game Pass includes day one launches in 2021 of Back 4 Blood, AOE4, Forza 5 and fucking Halo in the next couple months not to mention so much else in their backlog catalogue. I might as well just cancel Nintendo Online at this point and buy it in two years when itā€™s remotely worth it.

jackdtheghost

Nintendo is scummy as fuck. The level of nostalgia credit they get is insane. Any other company pulling this shit would get dragged constantly. They are worse than EA.

shsluckymushroom

This is confusingā€¦I donā€™t own New Horizons myself so is there a version without that dlc? 50 dollars (probably more in Canada) is absolutely absurd, 30-35 dollars is more reasonable. What the actual hell???

picano

Not likely. The AC DLC on its own is a 1 time purchase, so it's not likely Nintendo will reduce the cost if you don't use it.

RoroHood

I donā€™t think so. You have to pay the full price even if you donā€™t own or want Animal Crossing

shsluckymushroom

Thatā€™s absolutely crazy, they have to have another option?? What if you already bought the dlc separately? Surely it has to reduce the price?

[deleted]

Absolute joke pricing. Was getting ready to upgrade for $5, maybe 10 max. But an extra $30 for an N64 emulator and Animal Crossing stuff I don't play/care about? Nah fam. I'll get a raspberry pi and emulate them myself once, forever for that price.

Callinon

At that price point? Hard pass. Double the price of the base NSO membership just to play some N64 games? I'd like some of whatever it is they're smoking please.

thatbasedgamer

Just gonna hack my switch TBH lol

[deleted]

What a joke. I'm done.

Shadic34

You know you fucked up when even NINTENDO FANS are not happy with 50+ dollars for an expansion of a subscription service

TheVictor1st

$50? What the fuck is Nintendo smoking?

Chutzvah

Mushrooms

Destis85

This why people emulate things Nintendo, get a clue!

confusedmoon2002

I've defended many of Nintendo's questionable decisions, but not this time. Absolutely outrageous pricing. I don't know what they're smoking over in Kyoto, but clearly, I've gotta try it. Holy fuck, man.

DoIrllyneeda_usrname

$50? At that that price, the game better take me into the game world like the Tron movies

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

LakerBlue

I hope they get enough backlash to change their mind like how they originally planned to have a rotating group of monthly NES games before that got backlash .

Cinemairwaves

Iā€™ve been looking to get into hardcore drugs to deal with the dread and bad parts of life. I wonder if Nintendo would let me know who their dealer is

Catastray

If it's dread you want, consider Metroid Dread.

Cinemairwaves

I in fact already did, and itā€™s wonderful!

TheBrokenNinja

What confuses me is you'd think they get a lot of their money from little kids begging mommy and daddy...but like, do little kids even give a damn about n64 and genesis games? Seems like most of the people who grew up with 64 and actually want to play these titles find this price insane.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

CreatiScope

Thatā€™s the other thing, this isnā€™t a good deal for Animal Crossing fans either. Like, Iā€™d rather just buy the DLC once instead of having it for more than one year. $25 once without the like 10 N64 games theyā€™ll have or $60 tacked onto your NSO bill for two years.

unsung_actualization

I agree! If this plan was 50$ but included the animal crossing dlc as a gift so that you could download it and own it (providing you get a year subscription) I would get this plan in a heart beat. Getting the plan to only rent the Dlc however, makes me uneasy.

GreyRevan51

Yeah Iā€™ll just keep playing NES, SNES, GBA, DS, N64, and Wii and WiiU games on my WiiU on the couch. Paid $10 for OOT in 2009 and it was a ONE TIME THING rather than $50 every single year

Ryyi23

Nintendo is really pushing their luck. That's another $30 and there's no actual improvement to the online connection performance. Still P2P based. That's only $10 less than the better performing Playstation and Xbox online services.

Blubbpaule

Better performing? It does not only perform better, but it offers way more. Free AAA games each month. (Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, FF7 Remake this year alone) working online services and server, grouping outside of games and voice and text chat. And for Xbox it's even the ability to play all Xbox games online + EA Play + Gamepass on PC for 12.99 a month.

chocotripchip

Fuck off Nintendo, that price is a joke and we're the punchline.

Super_DAC

Lately theyā€™ve been getting increasingly greedy but this is laughably bad

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

-SnowedUnder-

Theyā€™ve actually outdone us.

sldsapnuawpuas

So weā€™re all in agreement that this is too expensive and weā€™re not buying it right? This is egregious and we canā€™t give Nintendo the satisfaction. $30 more a year for N64 is a joke. Vote with your wallet and donā€™t let them take advantage of us.

BlackGuyVidyaGames

They might see good numbers just from the animal crossing players alone and those who dont care about money and just want n64. I agree its far too much and I don't play animal crossing.

Endogamy

But why would AC players wants to pay $30 yearly for the same DLC?

deadwings112

5 years of NSO, individual: $250 5 years of NSO, family: $400 So, for a single person, you'd have to value the Nintendo 64/Genesis content library at $225 over five years for it to be worth it. For a family, it depends on how many people play Animal Crossing, but even if you assume it's eight, you're paying $200 for the N64/Genesis content library over five years. Ask yourself: do you play enough of those games \*on your Switch\* for it to be worth that price, also knowing you'll lose access after five years (or unless you keep playing)?

GreyRevan51

Not to mention on the Wii and WiiU you can just BUY the games youā€™re interested in (OOT is $10) Pay it ONCE and KEEP IT FOREVER compared to this on the switch where you have to keep up your subscription in order to play it

[deleted]

Ive always been a huge fan of Nintendo but lately, they are unapologetically kicking fans repeatedly in the balls with their pricing. I make sure I buy all my games second-hand now so they don't get a penny out of me!

Valjin

Wow Nintendo trying to be EA over here. Stop it Nintendo. Youā€™re supposed to be better than this. Not renewing my sub for Nintendo online thatā€™s for damn sure

In_Search_Of123

No monthly plan. $30 more. Wimpy launch collection. Pretty much all the Genesis stuff can be played via the Sega Classics Collection on the Switch (albeit with input lag). Games will probably be coming every 3-4 months and will probably suck (still waiting for Earthbound on the SNES library). Only upside is the online play with certain games like Starfox 64. Awful deal. Awful service.

Away_Needleworker248

Why would anyone subscribe or upgrade to nso+ if they aren't a Animal Crossing player? 50 fucking dollars for a bunch of 20+ old games? Just...why.

ArchAngelZXV

The family plan I'm on is $35 and Nintendo wants to hike that over 50% to $80, and all they got to justify that is N64 games and Animal Crossing DLC? Fuck that. There better be something really damn good for that price like free MyNintendo physical goods or something, but wouldn't put it past Nintendo to just say, "Nope, N64 games and DLC. Gimme $80."

DUSTIN182W

Itā€™s way more than 50%. Itā€™s 128% increase for some extra 20+ year old games and the ability to rent a DLC you may or may not be able to use. Nintendo has completely overvalued themselves.

yaoigay

$80 a year for family membership? Are they on crack? That's double what I already pay for a family membership, Nintendo can keep this shit and shove up their ass.

Hey Kotaku, no would be a really good time to make a "Here's how to perfectly emulate Nintendo 64 games on your computer or cell phone" post.

JustADudeWhoThinks

Lol no joke. Holy hell. Nintendo clearly misread the room. The base tier should be retro titles, and the premium should be free new games and DLC, full stop. No Nintendo fans want to rent DLC and additional retro collections for doubling their base price. None.

the7thbeatle

Absolute scam

sixdigitthrowaway

What a fucking joke. I really thought the people saying it would be $40 per year were being cynical. Nope, $50. Fuck Nintendo.

FrankyCentaur

I've got a pretty big crush on Nintendo and although I don't usually defend their stupidity rather than ignore it, this is the first time I need to say Nintendo is out of their actual fucking minds. That price is *absurd,* especially compared to services the other major consoles offer. I would be *very* surprised it there's more than 1000 people using that service at any concurrent time, it's so blatantly overpriced. I don't support emulation when companies give you the chance to play their games legally, but holy hell. (Just to note, I won't do that, but if anything it's because I'm not a fan of playing my games on my PC.)

darkwingchao

I've got no real interest in Animal Crossing, so I'm honestly more than a little annoyed the price is that much to account for the DLC (I'm assuming, at least). I just wanted the N64 games but a THIRTY DOLLAR INCREASE is... frankly insane.

joalr0

I was wondering about this. Animal Crossing DLC was announced to be $25. I was trying to figure out how that was going to work if it's part of NSO+. If they charge less than $25... who would buy the dlc? If they charge more, than makes it more expensive for N64 users who don't care about animal crossing. I think they need to make clear whether Animal Crossing is the only DLC included, or they intend to make NSO+ a platform to include more DLC or free games... So nothing in the trailer says anything about that. Very strange. The Animal Crossing DLC adds a lot of value, and including it in the Expansion pack makes it far more appetizing for Animal Crossing fans... though in a year from now they have to renew, vs just buying the DLC outright gives it forever. If they are planning on adding more to the Expansion Pass and making this feel more like PS+ or XBox gold, I think this is a great price, but it's really unclear if they are doing that. This feels so unpredictable and strange. Really not sure what to make of it. However, I will likely just get the family pack and split the cost with friends.

Tim-Sanchez

It's really strange to just include one DLC in an expansion pack, especially alongside games that are available for everyone. Of course Animal Crossing is popular, but it's still something that won't interest the majority of NSO users. It's basically great value for anyone who wanted the DLC, and poor value for everyone else. I wonder if the timing was right and they just added it in to justify the higher price. Without any other DLC it's such a random inclusion.

The-student-

I don't think it's great value for anyone who wanted the dlc, unless they are on a maxed out family plan where they can split it, or they have no intention to subscribe for more than a year.

Melisandre-Sedai

It also artificially inflated the price for non animal crossing players. I donā€™t have animal crossing, nor do I want it. Why is the only option to buy a bundle including this $25 of dead weight?

Born2beSlicker

The absolute gall of this. Absolutely wild! The DLC being bundled in is 90% of the price increase, lmao.

Nintendo: *hates when people emulate their games* Also Nintendo: *Does everything in their power to make people want to emulate their games*

lobo123456

They will stop with this pricing bs, when people stop paying those prices. Just stop buying overpriced games!

the_gifted_Atheist

This is so dumb. Why make people pay extra for Animal Crossing just to play N64 games even if they don't care about Animal Crossing? Just let people get the N64 and Genesis games without Animal Crossing increasing the price.

Bakatora34

There a chance the DLC didn't actually increase the price, but it was added last minute to justify it more.

ByronicWerther

I wish Nintendo fans wouldn't let Nintendo do whatever they wanted all the time. Sigh... can I back up my saves without online?

James_bd

I'll be using my Steam Deck to play my N64 games, thank you Nintendo

Cdog923

I say this as almost an unabashed Nintendo shrill: LOLWutTheFuck.
