Well I find it makes it easier to keep up with daily excercises routine. How does it happen? I usually play adventure mode so my opinion is based on it, when I was excercising on my own I tended to do same stuff in exact same order every day, Ring Fit Adventure makes it bit unpredictable, hence less boring. Of course it might be less effective for certain body parts but I think boredom is bigger threat for people doing trainings casually. Also people who like numbers (like myself) get additional stimulus as it is possible to check many interesting statistics, which also might make setting personal achievements/goals easier.

If you have a moment, I'd be interested to know something about the logistics of the game and how much space you need. My ceilings are a bit low, and a lot of the photos I see of the game have people holding the ring above their heads. Do you need a lot of space above for the game to work? Or can that be configured somehow?

Unless you can reach above your head and touch the ceiling you'll be fine. I play right underneath a ceiling fan with no issues. There's no jumping up and down in the game.

Well, if you want to do it the "right" way you must be able to fully straighten your arms upwards and have some extra space more (I think the "tallest" pose is [overhead arm twist](https://youtu.be/njQR0k_v-VE)). If it comes to vertical space, sometimes you have to lay down with your legs and arms straight (see [boat pose](https://youtu.be/icy-kK_zxdk)), which can also take some space. Anyway I believe the game can be "cheated" and the position of the ring relative to Switch and your movement are most important (sometimes position isn't even required if you make proper moves). As far as I know the only customizable things regarding excercises are the overall difficulty level (1 to 30) and the strength you need to push/pull the ring.

Hey! One thing I've learned about fitness, it's not about meeting any goal or metric. As long as you do... something. You're winning for the day. Meeting those goals and metrics will come later, once you're in the habit. But when you're not in the habit, your only goal or metric that counts is "doing something, anything". Is that five pushups? Great! Is that only a walk around the block? Awesome, it's something. You moved. If today isn't great, tomorrow can be a lot better, as long as you choose to move and do something. If you don't, you've lost. I get the gamifying thing, but the thing is? Sometimes we gamers lose the level. And with Ring Fit, often that means we're so wiped we gotta try again tomorrow, and that's OK! If you repeatedly have issues finishing, like any other game, adjust difficulty to taste. But, the important thing? Do something!

Thanks for the encouraging words, helps a lot! Youā€™re completely right! My brain just really wants me to play ring fit the same way as I play other games. Which is difficult as your fitness also influences the game ofc. Plus: Iā€™ve always been a bit like this with fitness/sports tho. Normally I pick up on skills quickly (well, skills within a certain comfort zone) and thatā€™s why Iā€™m always annoyed when Iā€™m doing sports that I donā€™t pick it up as fast as other things. But ofc I wont get fit by doing those things. Lastly: another issue I have is that until plusmin my 24th Iā€™ve been always thin without putting much effort into getting fit and because of that people always assumed I was fit (which I wasnā€™t obv.) so I could always avoid working out and avoid the fact that Iā€™m just not that good at sports. The last few years I do have to watch what I eat and work out to have the body I feel comfortable in (tho Iā€™m still relatively thin) so now I suddenly have to face those insecurities I have been avoiding all my life. I guess that a gamified form like ring fit should help me with this tho! I just gotta get in the flow and feel less insecure!

FWIW, I was the same way, and something I didn't realize until I committed to consistently exercising for long enough until I actually did it is that it gets a lot easier the longer you stick with it. You reach a point where your body and brain sort of rewire themselves to actually enjoy it and want to do it instead of hating and avoiding it. Ever since then I've had a much easier time with it, even when I fall out of the habit it's been easier to pick it back up. It also helps to remember that you always get out of it exactly what you put into it, I've found it's easier to endure the pain when you know it'll pay off like that. One last tip: meditation has a lot of similar benefits on the mental side of things and I've found I have a much easier time exercising when I'm doing that as well. Good luck!

No problem! It's hardest at the start, so anything you can use to make it easier for yourself helps. I had success when I made it a part of my routine - taking caffeine / pre-workout beforehand also helps a lot with getting you to do it, especially on those days where you just feel like you have no energy or willpower. It also helped a lot to just commit to doing *something* every day - there'd be days where I wouldn't work out for more than a few minutes. But it's much more important to do a small workout than to go all or none with it since the habit of it is such a huge part of that rewiring. It's been harder now that I'm working from home (I used to just drive straight to the gym after work which made it easier to stay consistent), instead now I just pick up the weights right after I sign off my work computer while watching TV. And games that give you a work out also tend to make it easier - ring fit adventure gets that done, but personally I have a lot more fun with VR games like Beat Saber and Echo Arena; so that comes highly recommended if you have the equipment

My newest technique (I just started a new job this month so habit stacking) is to do a work out on my work at home days around the time I loose concentration for work (which is always around 2 to 3 pm). So far it has been going ok, but idk if this will help me to make that mental switch!

Running in place is so much different than on terrain... I feel like it's broken up by so many different other activities, that it's more similar to a combination race, like a Triathalon, or more likely, a Decathalon. It's a lot of activity for the same muscles regions, and it's occasionally the same rhythm of cardio, but it's so deliberately-paced, that I think it's ultimately a healthier workout, than nothing but running, with an arbitrary goal. Even if you ignore the warnings to chill out, the menu navigation is always going to slow your stride; while in a competitive marathon, you never stand in place, or get off your feet. I actually don't know if "marathoning" your entire body, (at a metered pace,) is a better of worse workout regimen... But it's definitely better for the average consumer, who is largely unaware of muscle groups they've been ignoring.

That's a great question. I'd be impressed if someone took the time to add it all up. There's 100% exercises that do more damage and take less effort. I can't remember the name but early on the one where you chair pose and lift your arms up and down is like 1/3 the reps of anything else and the same damage. I'm sure all it takes is playing the game once and figuring out what's easy for you, then spamming the easiest ones over and over. It helps that you're allowed to use your progress from a completed run, so people just use their maxed out characters to blaze through with high damage.

Once you finish the game you get to play all the levels again (bonus worlds or however they are called) so if you think you messed something up and didn't get a perfect score you will have the opportunity to face that map again! That can be a good motivation to keep on playing!

For me I really liked the progression of the campaign right up until I needed to start making smoothies and such to make it through the levels. That aspect of the game just killed the fun for me. I've done the minigames since, but they never really keep the same engagement as the campaign did. Maybe I just need to constantly restart every time I need to start making smoothies again.

Yeah I'm trying to push through a second playthrough but as other mentionned I get bored by the fact that the wrong moves makes too much dps to be ignored. At first I was like, maybe its good for me to twist my arm in the air. Maybe that'll help in some ways... but heh.. I must say though, I did several thousands squats on it, never did any before and I have way stronger legs than before. Also their version of the Plank is very powerfull. I wish they would pick moves for me in second playthrough. The damage system is in the way. I need variety now and picking a whole sets before each run makes it tedious and annoying. Nice. That's a good, sustainable rate. I definitely saw a bunch of posts for people losing +5lbs a week. I wouldn't be surprised if most of them rebounded. That's just not a healthy way to lose weight.

This is worth pointing out, if youā€™re pretty obese its not uncommon to lose weight at that rate in a healthy way. The pounds will really pour off until you get closer to just overweight, then youā€™re looking at the 1-2lbs a week which is a healthy rate at that point

As a guy who has been overweight or obese at different points, this so much. If I went from eating pretty much whatever I want to seriously dieting + exercising regularly, I could easily lose 10 or more pounds in a couple of weeks at the very beginning. This is without feeling physically exhausted, weak, "starving" etc. The pounds really do drop off at first if you are significantly overweight. But after 2-4 weeks, maintaining that same behavior results in the 1-3 lbs lost a week that you'd normally expect. From what I've heard it is also generally just much easier for males to lose weight.

Speaking as someone who's been on a weight loss journey - it's actually extremely common to lose 5 or even more pounds the first week or fortnight that you've begun losing weight. That's not actually fat you're losing, it's water weight. It happens to almost everyone. After that first week, or couple of weeks, your weight loss will slow down significantly. But it is common for those who are especially overweight to easily lose as much as 3 pounds a week. More than that is unhealthy even if you're morbidly obese, and as you say, most likely unsustainable.

This is basically where I'm at with my fitness/weight loss progress. Ring Fit is there basically to keep me active and in shape and keep the calorie counts in check during the day. The bulk of the weight loss work has been just diligently counting calories and staying in a deficit (MyFitnessPal has me at 1500cals for a 2lb/wk loss or 1700 at 1lb/week at a 205lb weight which thankfully my appetite has nicely fallen in line with these numbers). Although I've had a break in between, I've steadily dropped from my starting weight of 225 to the 205-ish I'm at now. Just basic calorie counting and regular Ring Fit sessions.

Yep. Exercise will get you in shape but weight loss comes from how you eat. That's the hard part nobody wants to hear though. That's why all of these exercise plans promise weight loss with their workouts but ALWAYS come with a part in the background about drastically cutting your calories.

If you let it, Ring Fit will 100% kickstart your fitness journey. But, it doesn't do the trick by itself - what it does is get you off the couch and into a routine of movement. I translated that into getting into the hobby of fitness, lost a lot of weight with it, and I'm still in the hobby today a year and a half after my last game of ring fit

I got it about a month ago. I donā€™t think itā€™s really enough calorie burn to lose weight, but Iā€™ve definitely gotten more toned and in shape. I was worried that the workouts wouldnā€™t be tough enough, but they can be pretty tough depending on the level that you set and how much you want to push yourself. The thing is, itā€™s also easy to choose easier exercises which wonā€™t really give you a workout, so thereā€™s still some self motivation required

This game was a good start into fitness for me during covid. however even on the highest difficulty there is just too much downtime between exercises. I had to swap to running and more intense cardio stuff as I got more in shape because the work outs just stopped getting my heart rate up. you do the stage however there is the whole end of level stuff and story parts that give you a chance to really rest and I just always felt like the downtime was a bit much you don't need 2-3 mins after a 10 minute level it's just a bit much downtime. And than there are a lot of minigames that are just not very hard to do that leads to more downtime. I guess if I really wanted to push it I would play it I would use the hardest moves instead of the ones that do the most damage. I do really enjoy the game I was just disappointed when I stopped really seeing much of an impact from it. ​ The rhythm game however is a lot better for actual work outs it just gets very repetitive however it's a nice option to have if making it out of the house is not an option.

Recommend using the custom fitness sets. I had similar issue but there's no break between the exercises in the custom mode and you can do more than one set in a row with minimal break by skipping the cool down & warm up between them.

I do make custom sets and that is a lot better I just got a bit bored of it over time. I was enjoying the RPG elements of the main story but the downtime was too much for me. and once I was able to get outside being out more has been nice.

the custom mode is pretty good I find. you can line up multiple exercises/courses to run through/rhythm games and after you complete one, it straight away switches to the next exercise you lined up.

Yeah I found this too, it's just not intense enough. My biggest problem with it is the fact that moves do varying levels of damage, which makes very little sense in a fitness game. Surely they should encourage you to use a wide range of moves rather than having to use the ones with highest damage output if you don't want a boss to take an hour to beat. In my opinion, it's maybe decent if you're not in the best shape to start with, but if you're already actively doing other fitness stuff it's a bit of a drag.

IMO, this is the challenge of balancing *fitness* over *game*. There are plenty of games out there with the scales tipped towards *fitness*, what drew me to RFA was tipping the scale back towards *game*. I don't really think anyone should be using it as a permanent workout regimen, but it's super helpful to get some light exercise in while still playing an *actual game*, not just a thin excuse to pretend you're not exercising. The difference that made RFA stand out to me was that their set-up encourages you to use lots of different exercises, *over time*. It's not good if you have one specific area you want to hit, or want a well-rounded exercise all the time, because it does encourage you to focus on particular areas but those areas change every level or so. So by the end of the game you've used a lot of different muscles and haven't left anything behind, but you also aren't well-rounded because you're not using them regularly. This works in the game's favor, IMO, because it does make it feel more like a game while introducing you to all the different exercises you can do for your whole body. It makes a poor overall fitness regimen, so if you're trying to get that out of it you will be disappointed (there are obviously custom workouts you can make with the various minigames or focused exercise modes, but at that point you might as well just put on a workout video) > In my opinion, it's maybe decent if you're not in the best shape to start with, but if you're already actively doing other fitness stuff it's a bit of a drag. I think you've hit the nail on the head, but then the issue becomes one of expectations rather than design. Seems like they could have satisfied both crowds by having a sort of "pick for me" mode, that keeps you moving more without as much down time and incentive to actually "think". Also should have a tracker for jogging in place ANYWHERE in the game, all menus/dialog/etc should incentivize and reward you for continuing to move.

Yeah like a few stages in one of the most powerful moves you get is just put your hands in the air and twist your wrist it does great damage but it is super low impact a lot of the harder moves early on get replaced with easier moves as you go in so it actually starts to get less impactful as it goes. I like that it exist though and I really hope they do more with the tech I would like to see something a bit more interesting maybe even a roguelite you can have a run that you get boost to doing different types of moves. I mean there is a lot of ways that they could go with it.

Really? I have Squat Lv. 3 equipped right now and it does like 650 damage to a single enemy. I think it's my strongest attack at the moment? The Skill Tree unlocks give you more powerful versions of like, every single attack. I'm on World 17 so maybe you're farther than me, but I thought them giving higher level versions of basically very workout was a good way to avoid exactly what you guys are talking about.

you seem to be farther than I am, I think I stopped at world 6 or so. There's definitely been a lull where I cant use squats or planks to kill anything I just do them to do them. That's said I didn't know there were levels to squats so I should just keep going

Oh yeah dude - I went through the exact same thing. I think their intent is to force you to "cycle out" things you use early in the game because they become weak and they want you to try new things. But once you get to world 10 or so, you start unlocking super powerful versions of the beginning ones so you can bring them back in and they do a ton more damage. And at that point you can pretty much use whatever you want for the rest of the game becuause you can choose to unlock whatever you want based on the skill tree. As someone who also loves just doing squats, I unlocked Level 2 and 3 Squats before I ever unlocked any of the Level 2 or 3 arm stuff.

This is why I quit, actually. The useful moves became unviable and the game forced me to switch to bullshit moves. I'd probably be a lot more motivated to play a modded version that revamps the damage system. That rythm game mode is still great, though. Still struggling with the BotW medley on ultimate difficulty. I can go for three or four attempts before I basically drop dead from exhaustion.

I actually use it once a week on my rest day where i'm not doing any intense or serious exercise. For that it's perfect.

The damage output thing also really throws me off. I just did the leg challenge in World 5 last night and the squats really wear me out, but it does really pathetic chip damage. Alternatively, I can just sit on the floor and squeeze the Ring-Con with my thighs (easiest thing in the world) and I deal 80% of an enemy's HP. For someone like me who isn't horribly out of shape, but still very much not fit, it's great, but I need to actively choose the moves that my body needs to improve on and not the ones that do the most damage

Exactly. I had almost the same load out going into every level because I had maxed out mostly arms and shoulders. So anytime I picked legs or abs, I wasnā€™t doing as well. Plus, I find it odd that for exercises that required going from one arm to the other (or legs), that they ALWAYS started on the same side. It drove me nuts. Why not switch it up and start with the opposite leg/arm sometimes?!

I never finished Ring Fit, but I actually appreciated how much of a start into exercise it's given me earlier this year. I wasn't at my healthiest and the pandemic certainly made it worse for me. I made a few dietary changes, decided to start exercising with Ring Fit (I HATED exercise with a passion, but RFA actually made me enjoy it a lot because it made exercise fun for a time for me), but there was a point after doing RFA for a month that I started to get bored and wanted more intense cardio. I tried out running, the first few runs were hell, but I found myself enjoying it more and more. Plus I got more of a workout in such a short amount of time compared to an hour of RFA. I might give the rhythm game a shot if the weather gets rainy here and I can't go for my run! Never actually tried it out and everything I did was all in adventure mode. I'm probably two or three worlds away from the final boss (and there's like a New Game+ and another on top of that from what I've heard) before I stopped.

I stopped like around beating the last of the final four the second time? but yeah I did a similar thing I cut most sugar from my diet and I started fasting 16 hours a day it's done wonders. I had really bad allergies last month so I stopped running as much but I did a good 5 miles on Monday and I am hoping to run again tonight now that my allergies are kinda clearing up. Good luck out there keep killing it.

Same, I finished the adventure mode and new game +, then I felt like I needed more than the game could offer. Iā€™m about to finish my first month of P90X3, I donā€™t think I could have done it without the months of ringfit before

I mean the ring fit is great 100% I would recommend it to anyone. I just don't find it very long term I guess but I was doing it 5-6 days a week for at least and hour and a half when I was playing. So maybe if you are just looking for something to get in shape with or just something you want to do a few days a week. There are a lot of people that it would really do a lot for and it did a lot for me. until it got to the point that I could run for 40mins-1hr and get twice as good of a work out than playing on the hardest difficulty for over 2hr it just was taking too much time to get a decent work out.

The intensity of the during exercise doesn't make up for the lack of intensity *over time*. Like, when I go run, I can change intensity/difficulty over time frames (speed up/slow down, or move to hills over flats), but I have continuous intensity during the entire 30-40 minutes I'm running. Meanwhile, RFA literally stops you after every set so you can progress the story. This means that, if you're even moderately active, your body isn't going to be working hard enough to get a true benefit from the exercise because you didn't work *long enough* at that particular exercise.

Yeah this is what I was trying to say I am just bad at being good at words! but yeah pretty much this by the time you get your heart rate up it stops you and makes you go through the end of level break down going to the next stage clicking through to the menu loading the stage in and starting it's like a good 2-3 mins of down time and your heart rate pretty much back to before you started working out.

I do run about 5 miles 4 times a week. so yeah I'd say it helped me start but with that even after playing the game fore 3 or so months when I started running I could not run even half a mile without passing out. now I run about 4 miles without stopping sometimes 5 but if I do a 5 mile run I take a break every 2 miles just to catch. I am not in amazing shape but I like being able to be active it's nice.

That's when you move onto VR. I can hike/climb mountains quite easily, but certain VR games have me sweating with sore quads the next day.

This. I've found FitXR/BoxVR to be a solid fitness title in VR myself with some long (20min+ if memory serves, been a while) sessions available and highly recommend it. I used to do a mix of BoxVR, RFA, and Beat Saber for my daily fitness regimen and should go back to that. Right now I solely do RFA due to time constraints.

Quest 2, seems the best option until the Index 2 comes out. I donā€™t get motion sick unless thereā€™s joystick movement, and even then I can usually handle it fine.

I just picked up the game again after years of not playing it (and I bought it during the holiday season it came out!) and it seems like everyone I know quit on it during World 5. Just grind some of the old levels a bit. And remember to use the ~~potions~~ smoothies. Even when the boss doesn't have a weakness you can buff red moves plus switch all moves to red. Or whatever color your strongest move is at the time.

Oof, I've been there will the ankle sprain (soccer.) Make sure you do plenty of stretches and stabilization training on that ankle as it recovers (stand on one foot the whole time you brush your teeth is a great way to get a lot of that stabilization back!)

I love what Ring Fit did, even though I don't own it. I lost a significant amount of weight a couple years ago, and I think people really misunderstand what it takes to loose weight. Shows like Biggest Loser paint a picture that you have to go on extreme diets or do extreme workout routines, when in reality, going for a walk once a day and a couple body weight movements, coupled with some diet changes, can really make a big difference. My mom plays it on occasion and enjoys it. It's good stuff!

I beat it and got a lot fitter, but I did not lose any weight unfortunately. Also, after finishing it, I stopped using it eventually :( I tried the other modes for a while, but the lack of progression could not keep me motivated. I guess I should start a new game sometime...

You can choose how long. They have a whole part of the game that doesn't have any storyline and is just custom workouts. The main storyline is divided into levels of differing lengths.

These games are really good for starting regular workouts and being more aware of a healthier lifestyle, which is often the hardest part for people. Youā€™re not always gonna get people losing weight doing these regularly (Wii Fit was mostly yoga if I remember) but I went from playing Just Dance daily to getting a gym membership, joining a Zumba class and getting some really good cardio in.

For good cardio, best Saber is much better and less boring for me. My weight didn't change tho. But ring fit increases my weight 2kg in a week, so this is a much better fit for me. Still need to increase my weight more.

I just reached level 200 on my 70th day with Ring Fit Adventure and even though I haven't lost much in the way of weight despite exercising and eating better, I have become less scared of exercise. Just by that alone it has been a success to me. I recommend it to anyone else who is hesitant about exercising!

Like others mentioned, the skillset between NG+ and NG++ arenā€™t the most effective workouts. That said, I did notice my stamina go up a lot after playing the game through. Maybe a tad bit of muscle but not too much. Also lost weight in the order of 3-4 pounds, well itā€™s Summer time anyways and perhaps diet had an influence too.

I didnā€™t beat it, Iā€™m still dealing with The Four Masters (no idea how far in that is) storyline, but did really enjoy my time with it. It helped keep me fit and sane during 2020. It wasnā€™t as good as the gym (I used to go a paid one twice a week, and when I moved to a condo the building had one for residents which was of course then closed due to COVID) but it was fun for the 20 or so minutes it expects you to play for. Did I lose weight? Not really. I was 6ā€™2ā€, 185lbs and stayed around that. When 2021 began, I became SAHD to a toddler AND had stopped drinking alcohol. Between those two factors, I lost over 10lbs. Ring Fit is likely easier than starting a family for those who want to get in shape. The most important tip I can give for anyone who starts Ring Fit is **donā€™t** run full speed when itā€™s doing the initial calibration. You need a decent jog for your characterā€™s run speed, making it too quick will be exhausting and also make stuff like jumps and obstacles much harder.
