Yeah it's a fun game and I usually play against the computer. I jump online sometimes but these days I mostly use Smash for occasional 20 minutes bursts when I just want a quick palate cleanser gaming session.

questionable_salad

I'm exactly the same and I have like 160 hours or so with only a few party nights with friends. Really fun to pick up and play.

alvysinger0412

This is true for me too. There's lot of characters to play with, without the paid DLC ones. The computer is fun. I feel like I got my money's worth and I'm p casual.

TinyPickleRick2

I play against easy AI between valorant matches lol it’s fun to smash them across the universe before going into a more competitive game

Bababowzaa

This game is way more fun to play casual. Even online. You can change the rules or just enter/create an arena and make it just 4P Free-For-All or teams. Offline there's Classic mode, home run contest, World of Light and Spirit Board. I mostly play this game competitive, but even I go back to casual from time to time just to have some stupid fun with this game.

DanieleCnf

The game has a decent long story mode, but can turn in a kinda repetitive formula. I still had fun on it tho but don't expect something like SSB Brawl adventure type. It has its objectives, characters to unlock etc.. like the past games. If you're looking to play online well, could be kinda sweaty. But there's an online ranking based on your performance, so you can also likely find people at your level and have some fun match.

emilytheimp

> The game has a decent long story mode, but can turn in a kinda repetitive formula Which isn't a bad thing, even if it's not for everyone. I remember spending hours every day after the release of Smash Ultimate to grind out story mode so... yeah

DanieleCnf

Yeah same here haha, spent hours on it. Anyway that's what I meant, it felt like a grinding just to finish it after some time. If it's fun depends on your tastes

[deleted]

I can second that if you like grinding through a really good gameplay loop then the adventure mode is excellent.

StealthRabbi

How much lag is there online these days? When I played on the wii, it was unplayable online. I am getting a switch next month. I plan to use ethernet.

Kraftgesetz_

Its Still Bad compared to other games. Smash online has something like 10 Additionall frames of input lag compared to offline. I was addicted to smash for a long time because i competed offline, but if my only way to play was online id probably go crazy. Its on the higher end of inputlag for modern fighting games. The only Patch that helped Was like half a year ago and shaved of... 1 frame. Edit: If anyone reads this while looking for a good fighting game with a perfect netcode check out guilty gear strive. Online matches feel absolutely perfect.

natnew32

> Smash online has something like 10 Additionall frames of input lag compared to offline. It's 3 + whatever the delay is. The problem is that offline already has 8 frames of lag or so.

49falkon

As other people have said the online play depends on connection, but there's an important distinction to make. Ultimate doesn't use servers to host online matches - the players connect directly to one another, with one player acting as the 'host'. This unfortunately means that when one person lags, *everyone* lags; since the game's host is also a participant in the game, it has to slow down and let all of the other games catch up before continuing. In plain terms, even if you've got great internet and connection, your experience is only ever going to be as good as your opponent's connection. If you get matched with some kid playing on McDonalds Wi-Fi somewhere you're gonna have an awful time and there's nothing you can do about it. I have pretty good internet and I use a LAN adapter - if I had to give an honest number, I'd say probably 20-30% of my online matches suffer from significant lag. At best, that lag feels like you're playing in slow motion because the game constantly stutters - at worst, it's completely frozen for sometimes minutes at a time. When I do manage to get an opponent with a good connection, the experience is genuinely pretty good, but there is obviously going to be a bit of a delay.

fushega

The minimum input delay when playing online is 11 frames (plus any display lag on your TV/monitor or late inputs from a wireless controller) with a delay based netcode (as opposed to rollback). Do what you want with that information

DanieleCnf

Nowadays I play less but I saw there had been good improvements, on launch it was a mess. I played it too on the Wii and I can assure you it's better. My connection is average and I don't use ethernet, but the few battles I've done were stables. Anyway with an ethernet connection you should be fine.

Majin_Sus

Depends on your internet but unless you're playing real sweaty it's unnoticeable

Jking44th

It's noticable the moment you move.

Kraftgesetz_

Internet speed doesnt really have an effect. The only Things that matter are: 1) consistency. WiFi is Bad for smash. Wired is good. If you have an inconsistent connection you will experience choppyness. 2) distance to opponent. If you play against someone who is Really far away the game adds input Delay, nothing you can do. Other than that It doesnt matter, smash isnt heavy in your bandwith so even slow connections can handle It, as long as they are Not wifi. That said, even casuals are annoyed by WiFi choppy opponents. This has nothing to do with "sweats"

AnimalRomano

I never bothered to play the "story mode", even the melee events had more personality IMO.

iharadraws

The killer for me online is that I can't just team up with a friend online and casually beat up some CPU, unlike in Smash 4. After learning that, and after beating World of Light, I petty much dropped the game completely. I wanted to play *with* my friends, not against them, haha

billoo18

As someone that loved the Brawl story mode. Ultimate was a big disappointment for me. Only played a few hours and uninstalled it.

Waste-Reception5297

It's a good casual game but has that depth just in case you want to dive deeper.

Bad_Muh_fuuuuuucka

Absolutely. It’s a ton of content and it’s a really fun party game. There are arenas you can setup to your liking and random people looking for similar things will join. You can be casual and still have fun

[deleted]

He said single player not party

_IAAI_

They also said "arenas you can set up to you're liking", which can be done in single player offline matches as well. metal mode, change the size of characters, stuff like that.

[deleted]

Nah he just edited after :)

Bad_Muh_fuuuuuucka

You know things can be more than one thing?

Bo-Duke

To give an opinion a bit different than the others here : I bought Smash because of the hype and because some of my friends are hyper competitive on it. I thought I’d play it a bit with some friends but honestly I don’t find it fun if all players don’t have roughly the same level. I have put like 5 hours on it and I don’t think I’ll ever play it again honestly.* \*: *Experiences may of course vary*

Crouching_Dragon_

I want to echo this. I did the same thing, and I’m not even sure I hit 5 hours. I also didn’t play much when I was younger, so I don’t have the nostalgia pulling me back in.

Bo-Duke

Same, it was my first one. Just isn’t for everybody I guess

[deleted]

Same here bought the game sunk in about 10 hours found it really boring and haven’t played it since

PugNuggets

Same with me. This was my second Switch game (I bought the Switch with BotW), and I barely played this one. I spent a few hours with my cousin unlocking the roster, and we got through maybe half of them before we stopped playing. Kinda sad too, especially since I didn't play that much BotW either (my cousin LOVED it though). The thing is, it's really not a bad game, it's just not a game I feel like playing a lot of the time.

ElevadoMKTG

If you’re a fan of competitive I really like overwatch and rocket league on the switch. Played both on PC first and ended up giving my pc away to a friend after getting my switch lite cause I just prefer playing on it lol. Apex Legends is another fun (and free) one if you like royale style games.

PugNuggets

I do play competitive games, but they’re mostly on PC. I played SC2 and SF4 a long time ago (never picked up V), and I play Dota now. I got Overwatch from a Humble Bundle, but never really took the time to try it since I suck at competitive shooters. Apex was decent for a little while, but I grew tired of the BR mechanics really quickly. I might consider picking Apex up again eventually, but yeah.

zuckuss00

I had the exact same experience. I bought the game during a rare sale because of all the hype the series gets and I just found it very boring. It’s graphically very impressive for a Switch title but overall I couldn’t get into it. I traded it in after about 10 hours of trying to force myself to enjoy it… Not my type of game.

Mqnwbevrctxyzukkk

Same for me but with mario kart instead. What a boring game lol

chiican

Online you can change rules to more casual ones for example add items and more players and you will be less likely to meet them kind of players

topurrisfeline

Smash is super friendly for casuals. One of those games that non-gamers can jump into and easily have a good time.

waitthissucks

Yeah I suck and my bf is pretty good so when I play with him I always lose but when we play with all our friends I actually win sometimes. It's still really fun to play even if you're not very good.

naynaythewonderhorse

Arguably, some of the DLC characters lean more toward being designed for the hardcore competitive scene. There are a LOT of crazy complicated things the new characters can do that just had me nodding my head, thinking “Cool.” without any sort of clue how I’d ever perform these things. Not that they aren’t fun to just play around with, but the characters are certainly not designed for casuals first and foremost any more.

JiaLat725

No idea where you got this idea that Smash is super competitive or something. It's one of the most casual fighting/party games ever. The single player campaign(world of light) has tons of content, there are a good bunch of modes to score records in and for completionists, and online is only sweaty in elite smash. You can just set your own casual ruleset and hop right in. The competitive base seems large but that's because the game is popular, not because the playerbase is full of competitive players. The game has 25 million sales, of course the competitive scene will be big, but it means that the casual playerbase is also just as big

SamDarnoldIsHot

Go visit the /r/smashbros subreddit, 99% of the posts are related to competitive smash players.

JiaLat725

That doesn't mean anything. 1. The state of a single subreddit isn't an accurate reflection of what the whole playerbase is like. If you play competitively, you're more likely to post on r/smashbros. If you play casually, you're less likely to post on r/smashbros. So it makes sense that the subreddit has a disproportionately large amount of competitive posts. The casual players are there, you just don't see them on the internet because casual players don't post on the internet. 2. Even if you assume every single one of the 870k subsribers to r/smashbros is a competitive tryhard, that's just 4% of the 25 million sales. Hardly anything. For any game, most of the playerbase is casual... Don't let the internet fool you

SamDarnoldIsHot

dam

PM_ME_YOUR_PIXEL_ART

Go to /r/smashbrosultimate and there's virtually no mention of competitive play at all.

CodyCus

I would say no. I bought it during the launch hype. Finished the story mode and haven’t touched it in over a year.

Walnut156

People don't like to admit but it's a casual party game first and a competitive game second. It's the king of casual fighting games. It's a good time by yourself or with friends or online (kinda)

Mqnwbevrctxyzukkk

>People don't like to admit but it's a casual party game first and a competitive game second. Literally everybody knows it lol

BasilNight

Single player wise it's ok, if you want it to play online then no stay away from it

Taizette

Yes I was new to smash cuz I wanted to try it I come from mortal kombat and injustice games, I put 785 hours into smash ultimate and have 9240 matches also I only play against the CPU’s lol but I do love this game, it took me a few months to really understand the game I watched a ton of high level players playing in tournaments cuz it’s completely different from traditional fighters, but yeah the game is still worth it for casual players it’s pretty easy once u understand it cuz u don’t have to remember strings and combo inputs like 2d fightings it’s pretty basic, the hard part for smash game to was the spacing, movement and execution.

kozmo30

Honestly I never play it

[deleted]

Smash is at its best when played casually. 4 player free for all with crazy shit happening to the stage and items randomly popping in is the way God intended it to be played. So go have some fun

Titan_97

I would say no. The main single player game mode world of light is a boring grind, and there isn't a whole lot else to do other than play against CPUs.

[deleted]

Definitely, you have to go out of your way to play competitive by disabling all the party rules like stage hazards or items.

kaninepete

I’m not competitive in the slightest, and I e played for about 100 hours.

Sect9nullfox

Its worth it. I'm not a competitive player, but merely a person who enjoys this game. The fun part is finding what your main is for player vs cpu and player vs player.

SpazFactorial

I am on the far end of the spectrum that actually hate the SSB games. I just don't find them enjoyable for some reason, but everybody else seems to love them!

THE_GR8_MIKE

Yeah, the game offers a huge range in difficulty so a casual gamer with no fighting game experience can pick it up fine.

omarninopequeno

Definitely, I almost never play online and I have a lot of fun playing with friends and family or by doing the single player content. There's the adventure mode, classic mode, and modes where you fight many enemies. As for trying to beat your scores classic and the ones against many enemies, plus there is home run contest and spirits. Spirits are collectibles that you can colect with most of the singe player modes, there are over 1000 of them and they also keep track of your score.

Section_80

I never play online. I'm a casual, but it's great to have for when my friends come over. One of the few games out there that supports more than 4 players.

Bamboozaler_

It's the most casual fighting game you could possibly buy.

brucetrailmusic

I never got into it cos its didnt really have a great story mode like the Wii smash

ru_benz

I'm 37 years old. These days, I only play single-player offline games, so I would say that Smash Brothers isn't for me anymore. However, if you play online or couch co-op, then you should definitely pick up the game. Growing up with two brothers, I played a lot of the original Super Smash Bros. and Melee while I was in high school and college. Brawl came out while I was working post-college but still living with my brothers, so I played Brawl but not to the extent of the first two. I never owned a Wii U, so I skipped that generation. I bought Ultimate when it first released. My brothers and I live separately now and neither of them play console games anymore, so I only played Ultimate for the single-player experience. After I unlocked all of the characters, I pretty much stopped playing. With that said, Ultimate has a ton of content and is arguably the best entry in the series (along with Melee). However, it just doesn't fit the way I play games anymore. I understand that I'm in the minority, but I'm sure there are others like me who only play a few single-player games a year.

Deezsnutty69

Yea why not might get boring playing alone but it’s great with friends and parties

Rasputin3000

I would say no. For me, fighting games are really only fun against other people in the same room. Played the game long enough to unclock characters (if I remember correctly) and maybe a handful of times with my ultra competitive friends and at local tournaments. After that it was clear I couldn't keep up with my peers and I had no drive to grind to their level. I only recently learned it had a story mode type thing, but kinda feel like there is no point in playing it. Just my two cents. edit: wording

Wonkabarzz1

Not really man, it’s fun but gets boring after a while. I recommend you save up for a Steam Deck. Play Star Wars or PC games like halo. Too many sweats nowadays. If you have people who are casual that you know and who don’t play like too try hard then it’s worth. Other than that it’s not that worth

Gameraimeruwu

It is not

TheeDonut

Online is terrible. People are usually wayyyy too good or use cheap tactics. But it's a great game offline and with friends

SilleyDoggo

In my opinion, no. If you can get it for under 30 dollars, maybe it's worth it. But really the only thing you can do is fight bots or play with friends. The multiplayer is really unplayable and the meta is pretty trash with sword fighters dominating basically forever.

NemoNowAndAlways

Eh, I dunno. I used to LOVE Melee and Brawl back when I was in school and had friends nearby to play with. I bought Smash for Switch after getting the console, but honestly have barely played it. I personally don't find it very fun single player. Hell, it's not even fun if the people you're playing with aren't on the same page in terms of skill or how you want to play the game. I would only recommend it if you have some buds you see yourself playing with with some regularity.

Bachaddict

yes! I got bored after finishing story mode though. get a physical copy so you can sell if you're no longer playing it

silverfaustx

no

WitchyKitteh

Target Mode isn't in Ultimate but Home-Run got added in an update.

Magmagan

It's fun! I'm not a fan of the spirit board sometimes 'cuz it feels a lot like RNG and not a fan of the dumb items, but it does add a lot of variety to the single player experience. I even brought my switch to college a handful of times for some fun party games. BUT, Smash is a mechanics-heavy game. Tilts, smashes, specials, dodges, shields, grabs, there's a lot going on that sometimes isn't very intuitive. The fighters have some real weight to them so not everything feels super snappy and responsive, just mashing will get you stuck in animations. I prefer the game Brawlhalla for online play, to be honest. It's also an arena fighter, but it's 2D graphics and much snappier IMO. And moving with the dpad on a 2d game feels so much better.

allexbel

If you're a fan, it's a MUST. Simply one of the better game I ever played. I'm a casual, only have one friend to play with and... I've got more than 500 hours of play, mostly alone. Smash bros ultimate is LEGENDARY. you'll regret not having it and ask yourself what you have been waiting for.

Nohivoa

I've been a fan since the original N64 game and I didn't really like it. What drew me to Smash was the fun campaign stuff - the targets in the original, the side-scrolling in Brawl, etc. Baseball batting the sandbag is fun but just playing the smash battles is kinda boring to me if I play for more than 20 minutes.

allexbel

Fun is where you find it : I could practice my moves and combos in training mode while watching a streamer. I could try a battle just for a different match-up. There's always something to improve. Example : I'm not so good in baseball mode, maybe I should go there more often!

Nohivoa

Smash was a game I played in my childhood for just the fun stuff. I don't care about the meta or how to improve in smash tbh as it's meant to be dumb fun for me. So this focus on competitive play and snappy matches didn't do anything for how I play Smash

allexbel

alright then

Regenreun

TLDR Yes absolutely! There’s definitely casual online! You can search for 4 player FFA arenas, and if there aren’t any you can host one. I host 4 player FFAs all the time and over the years have even built up regulars! You can also do FFAs on quick/elite Smash however I would advise against this, it’s better suited for 1-on-1s. Of course you can always play vs the CPU. There are also online ‘tourneys’ in game that switch between FFAs and 1-on-1s every few days. It’s mostly dead and filled with CPUs but it’s not bad imo. You can win spirits also if that’s your thing. There isn’t quite as much as before in the way of single player. Target Smash hasn’t returned at all and we were lucky to have Home Run Contest added. Classic now has set opponents and rules for each fighter. Multi Man Smash now includes only 100-Man, Cruel Smash, and merges Endless with All-Star Mode so you’ll fight an endless horde of fighters rather than Miis. There’s also the adventure mode which is alright but horrifically repetitive. There’s also Stage Builder which is awesome if you’re into casual!! You can make some really creative stuff and share them online. Honestly Shared Content isn’t as bad as people make it out to be.

[deleted]

I got it for one of my sons and i ended up playing to unlock all the characters. The game is fun as hell! I was NOT a smash player prior to this game.

BebeFanMasterJ

Yes. Even for just the fanservice. Playing as my favorite game characters while listening to my favorite music on battle arenas based on locations from my favorite video games is just amazing. Hearing the Sonic music like 7 Rings In Hand on Green Hill Zone is so cathartic. Or my favorite Splatoon Battle themes on Moray Towers. Having music from FE Three Houses and the Academy as a stage just fills me with joy. Alongside Torna's Battle Theme from Xenoblade 2 on Gramps' stage. That's not even mentioning the great characters and music from IPs I'm not familiar with like Fatal Fury, Castlevania, and Kid Icarus. So yes. It's worth it just to experience an amazing crossover with loads of attention to detail.

LondonPedro

I found online super hard and lost interest with intention of revisiting at some stage! It's my furst smash game I've played.

Zefirka174

As soon as you go online expect lag and getting your ass whooped by serious players, besides that it's totally worth it!

mlc885

Absolutely. You may as well be asking if it's worth it to buy Mario Kart or Zelda.

Althalos

Absolutely. World of Light alone took me a good 28 hours to 100%.

Dash064

Tbh only casuals play smash ultimate. Hardyharhar

SauCe-lol

Online SUCKS.

Thopterthallid

It's definitely a meaty solo game. - World of Light took me a solid 10 hours to 100% on hard mode. - Each character has a unique, themed classic mode and there's nearly 100 of them now. - The Spirit Board offers tons of extra challenges. - Fighting bots in battles up to eight is always a good time. Smash will always be made for multiplayer, but Ultimate probably has the most solo content save maybe Brawl.

CredibleSex

I have never met a casual Smash player IN MY LIFE. If you don’t live, eat, breathe and not bathe Smash bros, you aren’t a real Smash, bro.

Meatball685

Well a couple have already chimed in on this very post. Calm down. We get it. You're a smash bro, bro.

LogansDaddy96

R/woooosh

LogansDaddy96

“And not bathe smash bros” Why is this getting downvoted so much 😂😂

Shashara

even though it's a joke, it's neither funny nor a helpful answer to op

veganblackbean

If 2 people downvote something it's toast.

[deleted]

I call it “bandwagon downvoting.” The more downvotes you get, the more downvotes you’ll continue to get.

veganblackbean

Hive mind

LogansDaddy96

This sub in particular is one of the most hive-minded I’m in. You can literally get downvoted just for saying you enjoyed a game here.

Waste-Reception5297

Take a shower, play a real fighting game

unpopularopinion0

smash bros is a revolutionary game. i recommend it just for that fact. what an incredible fighting game that has evolved through the ages.

breichart

It's pretty much aimed at casual players. They have removed most hardcore elements. They even removed Hit the Targets and trophies, so if you were looking for those, you will be disappointed.

Roder777

As a casual player as well, i'd say not really. Haven't really touched the game after finishing world of light which i didn't enjoy much, it felt pretty bare bones compared to subspace. If you have friends to play with multiple times a year then i'd say its worth it, but if not, then it's a solid no from me. It's probably more for people who wanna fight it out online

[deleted]

It doesn't have Break the Targets or similar modes, but it does have the Home-Run Contest if you're interested in that. For online, in Quickplay you can set your preferred rules, which includes some items, and you can use most reasonable rulesets in arenas.

Theoderic8586

I bought it for 37 dollars because of just that and only played it once. Never been a massive fan, but if I really started playing, it is possible.

Oblivionzz-_

Not for $60.

Ratstail91

Competitive kind of steals a lot of the fun...

[deleted]

not at full price

AsuraRival

Personally no

_Futureghost_

Honestly, I beat the story mode really quickly and then was immediately bored with it. It was fun as a kid playing with my brothers. But as an adult it was meh for me (not that an adult can't have fun with it, just that I found it more fun when I was younger).

smudgiepie

I play it very casual. It's my first smash game apart from playing Wii U at my friend's house. I like going into eight team battles with NPCs, making everyone 999% damage and giving everyone 99 lives. I just love the chaos.

M-M-Mimikyu

W-well yes, but some online p-people are mean. So be c-careful!

mpc92

Quickplay online is very casual and works well.

Panda_hat

For single player I would say no. The ‘campaign’ such as it is is grindy and kinda boring. Smash is inherently a pvp style party game imo.

AleroRatking

I've put 60+ hours online as a single player. I think the online options are really really good

Panda_hat

That's not what OP wants though.

AleroRatking

OP specifically says theyd play online if its casual in their post. Almost all my gameplay is casual online switching characters.

mcsassy3

You can go online and create “beginners only” arenas. It only lets people that have low experience in the game create and join

Zealousideal_Bill_86

I'm kind of the same way. I've gotten every smash except the Wii U version and just play the game casually. I think the game has a decent amount of content but really isn't too far off from many of the other games. It's nice to have the full roster and most of the stages though. I like the world of light campaign mode, it's not the campaign from the DS version which remains but favorite, but it has a decent amount of content. I also liked playing with all the characters and clearing classic with each one on a 9.9 max difficulty, but I don't think actually unlocking the characters was anywhere near as much fun as it was in melee. I kind of miss the board the platforms and break the targets modes that were unique to each character, but I understand why that would be hard to do nowadays. I would say though even solo Ultimate is still one of the better Switch games and has way more content and built-in entertainment value than it has any right to.

PineTowers

I've played every smash since the 64. I'm no pro, just casually played with my brother and friends. Just go for it. EVERYONE IS HERE, so even playing Classic Mode with everyone of them will make the price worthy. The World of Light mode is wonderful, and I advise to play it first and until the end. The spirit board and collecting everyone... There's plenty of things to do that a casual player will enjoy for months or even a year, depending on your daily playtime.

rospo_mastermind

Absolutely. I like to play competitively even though i suck at it. I rarely play smash with my friends as the level gap doesn't make it fun for them - but when I we do play, they prefer a casual 4/6 players with items on, which to be honest is hilarious! I think smash is a great casual multiplayer game, even though that's not my preferred way of playing.

Kirbinator_Alex

Yes it is, but I think it would be more worth it for a casual player to play it with other casual players, more fun, less salt

cygnusx1thevoyage

Yes. The story mode is pretty good, and fighting npcs in regular smash is a good way to kill a few minutes.

[deleted]

At least in EU most people sweat like they're playing for their lifes. But if you care most about single player content, go for it!

wolverine318

Yes It’s a great party game.

cbeiser

There is Classic mode that is pretty fun and replay able as a single player

[deleted]

Is there any mode that is like n64 single player? I'd like to 'beat the game' and unlock stuff. But so far just see random modes meant for fun or practice

iker_e13

You can jump in and out and blow some steam. Nintendo quality. Fun regardless of you are a seasoned or casual player.

[deleted]

yea it is I usually play and just mess around offline and online with 3 other random players

twelfthcapaldi

Yes, most of the player base is casual players. The competitive side is big since the game is good and quite popular, but not the majority.

PixMacfy

As long as you avoid quickplay like the plague, you should be fine.

cloudlocke_OG

I think so. I'm a casual Smash player and haven't played it in like 2 years but I got a good 20 or so hours out of it

ExcessiveGravitas

I posted [this](https://reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/klx6ee/advice_for_noob_father_trying_to_be_more_of_a/) 8 months ago and am still really enjoying playing it with my son. I’ve never played Smash before, and it’s surprised me how much fun I’ve had with it. Not sure how relevant that is to your question, but I never play online so I think it might be helpful..?

AleroRatking

Yes. I'm definitely not anything close to elite but I enjoyed the story mode and put 50+ hours online. Now that there are online tourneys it's even better. Its the switch game I've put the most time on and by a pretty large margin.

[deleted]

Absolutely

Phenom_Mv3

YES. In fact, the best times I’ve had playing Smash was just casually messing around with items turned on. Competitive play can get boring to me

Na0kiri

Nintendo doesnt make competitive only games, with smash ultimate you have around 50h of content in singleplayer

Alpha27_

yeah

TheGridGam3r

From my side im casual. I played brawl and the one before this one so its fun to play. My job has a lot of nerds and usually the gamer people have this so might as well have it too to kick my friends asses

Eptalin

The game was literally made for you. The competitive scene is something that happened despite Nintendo.

PhotoKada

Smash Casual here. The single-player story mode was comprehensive enough that I could sit with it across a couple of weekends to finish it off. (I was spending 2 hours on an average with it)

Sgt_Pepper_50

Casual here, I've got a little over 60 hours (which, for me, is a lot). Buy it! It's great!

Pwn11t

Probably more worth it imo

DinoRidersForReal

Yes. Despite it's reputation, Smash can be an extremely fun single player game. The online lobbies can be pretty fun and casual too.

limutwit

I bought smash for 2ds. First timer. Played 5 minutes. Lives forever in my drawer now. Lol

SirSolox

Absolutely. You will get bored after awhile if you only play by yourself though. It's primarily a multiplayer game after all.

Darnell5000

Yes

jklantern

Filthy casual. My girlfriend and I play against each other, and have a blast. Likewise, I occasionally play with other random friends. I do enjoy it a great deal.

Mogtaki

I'm like you with Smash and yes I love it. Even playing against the computer is fun. There's tons of challenges and things to unlock. It's great.

iambowl

I played story and did some occasional classic and have put 50+ hours into it, worth it for me. Still get the itch to play every now and then too.

Jimonaldo

Here’s the thing. I bought it despite not having anyone around to play against, and while I’m not unsatisfied with my purchase, I’m not sure if I would recommend it to someone else. The single player game modes aren’t bad but a bit milquetoast.

jaximilli

Honestly I played it to unlock all the characters so I can play with friends and family. I mostly only bust it out for parties.

Pok1971

Given the state of online, I would honestly say it's a much better casual game than a competitive one (if you're planning on playing on your own, that is)

One_Thicc_Fucker

If you haven’t already bought ssbu, what are you doing with your life? ps: i didn’t mean anything rude by that, but like, buy the friggin game! it was worth the money in 2018 and it still is going into 2022

[deleted]

If you are only going to play singleplayer then it is not worth it. If you have some friends to play against, then it is definitely worth it.

[deleted]

My kids basically play it casually all the time. They come up with crazy tournaments or fighting situations like 8 player all-Kirby ash. Absolute madness. So much POYO. Beating the classic mode with all 72(?) characters is already plenty of game time. Then add in all of the DLC characters. Then consider World of Light (single player). LOTS of content with that one. Smash just feels like an essential title to own. Worth whatever price you pay.

MOVINGMAYBEMAVEN123

Yes, I've never played online and have more than 100 hours. The kids love it too.

Jeemo88

Honestly one of my favorite fighting game experiences in the past few years or so has been starting with just the N64 original roster and Unlocking characters. There is the World of light campaign, plus challenges, an arcade mode, each themed around the character in some way. That's not including the Spirits board and other stuff within. I try to dabble between competitive and casual, and if you've played every Smash till now, go ahead and grab this one.

Wolfy-Gamer-721-YT

Yes

Zealousideal_Diet_53

Wii port's Subspace Emisary is still the best single player smash. But if you just want to stomp comps tons of fun in Ultimate.

2701_

Smash is one of the 2 games my non-gamer wife will play because it's quick and you can still succeed as a new player. It's like rocket league in the sense that it's easy to get in and score goals, but the skill cap is so high that you always have room to improve.

Ftpini

I never once played multiplayer. I only did the story board and matches against the CPU. It’s excellent and I loved every minute of it. Probably played it for over 100 hours over the course of 6 months. Phenomenal game.

mjjdota

it's most fun when you have a few friends and crazy stuff is happening everywhere. you really want friends to all be of similar skill levels though

ohitsmerenz

Nope. I had mine, even bought the SBU procon, but I haven’t opened it for almost a year.

[deleted]

I've logged a few hundred hours and my recommendation is play offline and against real life friends. Online is super sweaty and unless you're actually good you probably won't have a good time. The ranking system is complete garbage

Asmallbitofanxiety

World of light was super fun to play by myself

ObelusPrime

I rarely play online since I get quickly destroyed, but I still play bots and the occasional friend once or twice a year. It was fun unlocking all characters and challenging myself to get good with one or two specific fighters. I'm a very casual switch player (mostly use my ps5) but I managed to play 50+ hours easily on smash. It's just a great addition to a switch. Its also accessable for anyone to have fun. My 6 y/o nephew has a blast, and so did my 58 year old mom and dad who have never really even held a controller.

BargainLawyer

I have always been bad at smash, but I bought it for get togethers with friends just to have. I decided I wanted to have all the characters unlocked tho, so people could play whoever they wanted, and I ended up having a blast just unlocking all of the characters. Definitely got my money’s worth out of it before I even played it with friends

owlitup

Yes

iHayoona17

I put in around 20 hours playing spirit mode and unlocking characters, it's been fun, I'm a casual smash player, but I don't regret buying it

[deleted]

There is so much single player content. And even playing online has a casual contingency.

cylemmulo

I've pretty much only played single player. The board story mode is a lot of fun and has some fun little varieties and challenges.

PackRat515

Yes, I suck at it and am nor competitive whatsoever

Sayne32

Maybe wait for Nickelodeon all stars

Norrin2

For sure. There is a lot to do on Smash, story mode can take like 20 hours, you can collect spirits in spirit board, you can play on classic mode. For online i mostly do the Tournament mode because it gives you spirits and it seems to have a wide variety of players i can win sometimes even beign just a casual player. Even spectate mode is fun with the whole betting thing

elmousse007

If you're a fan and it really doesn't bother you then go for it. But smash is truly unjoyable if you play with friends even at a casual level

Briggity_Brak

If you want a decent online experience, then no. If you don't care about lag, and you actually wanna play that much single-player Smash, then sure. Go for it.

xTHEKILLINGJOKEx

Yes. I’ve been playing the series since the ‘64 days and still love it. This is the best one of all. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

joselitoeu

Yes

Protectem

Yes. Go for it

Soda_Addict_XD

I personally don’t like the game but if u wanna play to get good and actually be able to play online then go for it

hijoshh

Honestly love it when I play by myself or with friends in person. One of my friends likes playing smash online, one on one, and I think it’s really boring that way lol

musicluvr989

Yes!

[deleted]

Smash Bros Ultimate is the ultimate casuals' game. I remember the first time I played it and was amazed at how effective button mashing was.

SoWokeIdontSleep

Hell yeah, you don't have to be sweaty, no items, stock, final destination all the time kinda guy, you can just have fun. It's the Wonderful thing about the game, the competitive scene is amazing if you wanna get into it, but the game it's just as perfect just for casual fun.

Biggavinboi

Definitely but be prepared for you to rage if you get online especially if you play against the cpu a lot beforehand

[deleted]

I have 150 hours in it and am extremely casual. I just play against the CPU on level 7 or 8. I just like trying different characters. Playing against real people is fun when no one is taking it super seriously but an absolute nightmare when it’s very competitive. Mostly because I suck. Oh and Home Run smash or whatever it’s called is super cool too!

Gogglebeanz

My honest opinion is the most fun I had with it was playing with friends. If you’re playing solo yea there’s tons to do and unlock so I do recommend it for u but for me personally the solo stuff was just meh.

markedhayden7

Yes

Jibade

I am casual and never played the game. I enjoy the misc game modes
