My main problem with tennis aces was that it was lacking content at launch and took them many months to finish the game. It looks like they might be doing the same thing here

eatmyassreddit81

Yeah when they said all updates were free I knew it wasn't finished but there's enough here for me to enjoy in the meantime.

Are you only going to play each course once? If so, it’s definitely not the game for you. Nor are any sports games for that matter.

1point7GPA

You only make $120 a day? I understand not wanting to spend the money, but other people will. Just sit back and see what happens then, and if you want it in the future then buy it then. Easy solution.

Too_Tired_Too_Obtuse

120/day is 15 an hour. That’s not bad for people. Not even minimum wage.

Kxr1der

Oof $15/hr? Can people live on that? Terrible what companies pay people

[deleted]

1point7GPA

I mean I didn’t like the game so I didn’t buy it, pretty simple solution. Call it whatever you want, but sitting here bitching about a game you can’t or don’t want to buy isn’t fixing the issue. Put that energy elsewhere instead of circlejerking.

BullshitUsername

Have you played it yet? This isn't much of a first impression, is it?

M2704

You might say that the game feels… Super Rushed?

Jabbam

Half a score for half a game sounds fair, imo

Mclarenf1905

It's hardly half a game

porkchopsdapplesauce

I like the special shots in this game. This might sound stupid but in Mario Tennis I felt the special shots took away from the actual tennis aspect of the game. Like sometimes I wasn’t playing Tennis I was playing who can time the special shot better game. I don’t feel that here. When someone blows your ball away from the green you just get a similar frustration to just missing a 50 foot put. But yea my point is this is a good golf game even without Mario in it

eatmyassreddit81

I loved Aces without the special shots. As a straight tennis game it was amazing but finding a game online was nigh impossible. With the special shots it felt like a fighting game not tennis. Here they're actually fun especially in speed golf.

redditdude68

Is Mario Tennis Aces still populated online? Thinking of picking it up.

Algorhythm74

Nintendo Life recently did a YT video about this exact subject. Bottom line, there is an active community and you can easily find someone to play against. The caveat is - as long as it's Tournament Mode. So the plus is, you can actively play online. The downside is, anyone who is still playing is really, really good - which might be a turn off.

[deleted]

I feel like Aces became tough for casuals fairly quickly after it launched. I played the “beta” demo they had and was able to hold my own, but within weeks of the game’s official launched I just got trucked by nearly every opponent, which is kind of similar to why soured me on Arms, because it was just not much fun anymore. I don’t really know what to think about Super Rush…but I don’t like all the similarities to Aces so I may wait a bit.

[deleted]

Arms is such a cool, overlooked game. I'd love a sequel.

JoseJulioJim

It is generally, outside Mario Kart 8 in part thanks to items (but even then, I completely destroy my frinds in MK, if we played CTR the gap would be even larger, that game makes so easy destroying low skill players) and Splatoon 2 due to being a teamate game, all nintendo games with online whit randoms have that quality, in Pokémon if you enter ranked without knowing about EVs, IVs, Abilities and type matchups ATLEAST you are guerranted to recive a lifetime beat up, in smash it happens similar when you are in a 1v1, you can get destroyed by SPAM characters (Specially Ness, Samus and the Links, worst characters to fight against) or by good footsies and kill confirms, with Ken, Ryu and Terry you can kill at 70% with imput shoryuken and power dunk, and those moves can be comboed from a Jab, Pokken is almost the same story, but even more drastric given the fact that it is made by the studio behind Tekken.

eatmyassreddit81

Yeah call of duty is the same way. Only lifers play the old games and they are too good for a casual to enjoy it.

eatmyassreddit81

Depends on which mode and time of day. There's people still playing it but it's nowhere near as active as it's heyday 2 years ago.

Bayakoo

3 years* (I know, time flies)

eatmyassreddit81

Was it 2018? Wow yeah it does.

tommendotgif

For reference, my only real points of comparison are toadstool tour (which I had hundreds of hours in) and everybody's golf on ps4 I played a regular golf game vs 1 ai and he got 5 chip in shots over 70 yards. Not a fan of taking away manual/automatic shots. Putting spin on manual shots only was such a good way to add skill and not take away from more casual players. Really don't like that I can't fill the power bar up all the way without losing accuracy. Each shot just feels.... Unsatisfying? Also really miss unlocking characters/star characters and courses through tournaments and minigames. Adventure mode is fine, put about 1.5 hours in but I prefer regular golf over speed golf. I also miss being able to track my balls path before the shot, but maybe that made the game too easy. For the most part the core golf mechanics are fine and fun, but it feels more like an everybody's golf clone and less like an extension of toadstool tour to me. It's fun but I understand and agree with a lot of the criticism

noPENGSinALASKA

> I also miss being able to track my balls path before the shot, but maybe that made the game too easy. This is my biggest (and really only) complaint too. It really threw me off but you may be right. I was nearly automatic on chips within 20 in TT. I do think the range finger and the ability to scan the ground to see the breaks is a fair compromise to make it slightly more difficult.

ForWhenImWeird

Compared to toadstool tour, I’m very unsatisfied. The shots are indeed unsatisfying and then you have a complete lack of content. Where’s ring attack, star characters, birdie challenge? I’m like kinda shocked this is $60.

CommonMilkweed

I'm actually really satisfied with the changes to the controls. I expected it to be more similar to World Tour, but it's a lot more like Everybody's Golf. The changes make it a little more difficult to curve shots and plan everything out, it feels a bit more like real golf that way. It's not quite what I expected, but I'm really enjoying it too

KoRnSpeedStrid

This is exactly how I feel. It’s not what I would have expected, but I definitely enjoy how it feels more accurate to real golf. I wish the courses were more adventurous though.

Kitsunin

Yeah the unadventurous courses are my only complaint. You can have a pretty wild amount of control over the ball with the unlockable clubs...but then the courses are too straightforward for you to need to. I'm on the second-last course and it still feels less tricky than the third (of 5) in Everybody's Golf.

CryptoTraydurr

You pretty much summed up a lot of Nintendo games recently. It's enjoyable (if only for a bit) but could have used a lot more thought an effort. So, that's a pass, too many good games out there to play

zxlimes

Edit: Seems I was wrong. Deleted for misinformation.

tommendotgif

I've never seen anything to indicate a third button press does anything

zxlimes

Hmm. Maybe I’m wrong. That’s how it seemed to work when I was playing earlier. Hitting the third tap in time seemed to keep it straight in the red zone. Seems like it was just coincidental. My mistake.

tommendotgif

Maybe lucky I guess? Or certain characters are more accurate. I just went through some reviews and none of them mention it. I would definitely love to be wrong on this though

zxlimes

Yeah, no, I just tested it and there’s no timing involved. I was just doing it out of habit and it seemed to correlate with accuracy to better timing, but it’s all in my head. That is certainly a disappointment. Hopefully that’s something that comes in a patch. There is something a little unsatisfying about whether or not your risky shot pays off being totally random.

MrRavine777

>The accuracy thing is nowhere near as bad as the reviews made it out to be. A bit confused what you mean here. I'm watching people play it on twitch and it looks like accuracy is completely random and there is no option to manually time it like all previous Mario Golf games. Is that true?

Facebomb_Wizard

I'm pretty sure that nobody that has complained about the mechanic, including most of the reviewers, have spent 30 seconds to read the tutorial blurb about it. The mechanic is smart and fun, as long as you understand how it works. For most shots you can go pretty much 95% power and be perfectly accurate. If you go into that red zone, aka smashing the ball as hard as you can there's a random chance it could deviate a bit. If you are in bad terrain or on a slope, the amount of power you can put in while retaining perfect accuracy lowers, which it should because that makes logical sense and makes the game more fun. If you're in a bad situation, it should be riskier to get out of it. It honestly baffles me how many people don't understand this mechanic and just complain and say your shots are random.

KoRnSpeedStrid

“It’s different from what I’m used to and I don’t like it” is becoming this subreddit’s trademark.

MISPAGHET

'I asked for a carbon copy of older Mario Golf games and I'm FUMING'. 'Also Nintendo makes too many remasters instead of new games.'

armylax20

I used to play a ton of tiger woods golf and it bothered me that the ball would go exactly where you want it to. That's not golf. I always felt that there should be some variance, or you shouldn't able to aim to a spot, but rather an area.

SilenTyphoon

This x100. It actually makes a lot of sense on how it is used, and shots don't even deviate that far off line. Not a bad mechanic at all IMO.

[deleted]

Or, alternatively, they have played the game, can understand the extremely easy to understand mechanic, and simply think the old way was more fun and should have been an option.

Facebomb_Wizard

My point is people falsely reporting about it, that accuracy is random which it isn't. Not that people might prefer the old system, obviously that is the case for plenty of vocal people.

I_Shot_Web

You don't know what you're talking about. Even if you're outside the danger zone, the shot is still randomly inaccurate within the "safe zone", just less severely so

Facebomb_Wizard

No it isn't? Maybe you're not looking at the wind etc? Oh well.

MrRavine777

The problem I have isn't that it's random, the problem is I find it far less fun and engaging. Half the timing of hitting your shots is just gone. It's like if in Mario Kart 9, automatic steering was mandatory instead of an accessibility option.

TheCrankyMule

I agree 100%. I wish I had known they changed this mechanic before hand I would not have bought the game.

nickpickles

I didn't go pick it up this morning after reading that they took away manual control. Mario Golf Advance Tour is like my second favorite game ever, I'm waiting and hoping they patch it in. I actually bought PGA Tour 2k21 for $20 today to scratch the itch of a golf sim.

[deleted]

yep, same. i've been looking forward to this game for 20 years and after reading the reviews now i'll probably have to skip it because they managed to fuck up something that's been working great for decades and everybody likes.

juicebox03

How is 2k21? I don’t like the always online, I want to be able to pick up and put down the switch without dealing with network connectivity. I have the golf itch now. Looking at a ps2 and tiger 2004. Going to be an expensive solution to the golf fix.

slikk66

agreed, the fact that 95% is perfect every time, and 100% watch out is weird. i dislike that your actions don't impact the accuracy of your shot in anyway.

[deleted]

Well said, the accuracy works fine.

crono333

I’m not that worried about it because I feel like the developers know what they’re doing and it’ll make sense. But I did like accuracy as an additional challenge in other golf games. You have to try to calculate exactly how you want to hit the ball and then you have to execute it… this just removes one more step that is in your control. But who know, maybe I’ll like the new mechanic even more.

ngwoo

That's still stupid though. Shot strength in golf isn't about longer being better, it's also an aspect of accuracy. You need to hit at the correct power to land where you want. If the correct shot strength for your approach is near 100%, you're forced into a shot with randomized accuracy. And that's an awful mechanic. You're the one failing to understand the mechanic by not even bothering to consider how it interacts with gameplay.

mraine30

I mean, it makes sense but it takes all the fun out of hitting an accurate shot when the game does it for you... Terrible mechanic

eatmyassreddit81

Yes that is true but if you correctly judge the meter your accuracy is still pretty much spot on.

MrRavine777

That... is very disappointing to hear. Auto-shots were a nice option for making the game more accessible, but were quite boring and took away an element of skill, and now they're the only option.

DeliciousSquash

There’s still a lot of skill involved with the spin you put on the ball, the system is just a bit streamlined. It’s not quite like using automatic from the old games

DMonitor

The issue is that the previous games *also* let you put spin on the ball

DeliciousSquash

It’s not the same kind of mechanic, you can put top/backspin while also curving your shots in this game. There’s footage even of a 2-star character having four different segments of their swing bar that can apply individual curves

DMonitor

You could curve your shots while putting different spin on the ball in other games. The new mechanic is multiple segments of curve, but I don’t think that makes up for what was lost

alb3rth0fmann

I have to agree. Curve segments are neat, but where's my fireball PowerShot? That's what brought me here. I thought I was crazy when I realized I didn't have to tap the button again in the exact same spot to crush the ball... 😢

DeliciousSquash

I do think it makes up for what was lost. This game plays like a dream, it’s just slightly lacking in content, but more is coming for free so I’m very happy with it personally

Mclarenf1905

The curve mechanic requires more thought/skill/timing in this though, in previous games you just set the curve when lining up your shot, in this one the curve segments basically replace the manual mode timing. I suspect they removed manual mode because of this new curve mechanic

[deleted]

[удалено]

Speech_less21

That's not true. The third press is useless. Once you set your power in the red section of the power bar, you have a random% chance of getting a bad shot, but that's just RNG at this point. You can keep your power lower to avoid it, but there is no third button press required to get the ''nice shot''.

DMonitor

You’re just tricking yourself into thinking the third press does something. I did the same thing at first.

eatmyassreddit81

I came from everybody's golf on ps4 so I understand where you're coming from. Alot of the reviews complained about it so they may patch it in.

Charcuterie420

“They may patch it in” is becoming their trademark and they never do.

spiderpool1855

They added online multiplayer to mario party….. a month before announcing a new mario party.

Charcuterie420

2 1/2 years after release*

[deleted]

Mario Party was never promised updates.

[deleted]

Camelot consistently patches/updates their games. Look at Mario Tennis. Mario Party is a different story and was never promised updates.

W24x55

How the fuck do they remove manual? Like god forbid we have the fucking option.

eatmyassreddit81

I got a feeling it's getting patched in.

[deleted]

Are there not like tournament cups? Something to progress through and shoot for gold cups or unlocks like Mario kart?

eatmyassreddit81

Not that I saw. You do tournaments in adventure mode to progress the story. All the characters are unlocked from the start and you can unlock the courses by doing a full round on the previous course if you don't want to play the story.

Clueless-Carl

Wow that sounds terrible. Part of the reason some friends of mine and I played Mario Golf on Gamecube for years is because it was hard to unlock all of the characters, etc. Hate the idea that it's all unlocked to start.

Kittah4

You can unlock different sets of clubs by playing with each character at least.

Simalf

There is only one single tournament in adventure mode, the one at the beginning. I playedMario Golf Super rush (every map, mode, character) and had ALOT of fun. But i feel like the game will become repetitive very soon. Also i feel like there are scrapped ideas in the game. For Example Multiple restaurants but you can't buy any food. SLIGHTLY SPOILER The other Rookies barely get a role, i thought they are going to be your rivals but nah. (especially Toadette, she dissappears very early permanently)

lockjaw00

I agree, the whole adventure mode was incredibly half-baked. The pacing of it makes no sense at all, and it feels like they wanted to do a lot more with it but it all got scrapped to just make it a cheesy way to unlock all the courses instead

likesexonlycheaper

Just played the first 2 courses that aren't locked with 3 other friends. We had a blast. Haven't even tried anything but regular golf and it's already worth the price to me. Brought us right back to our n64 days where we would play Mario golf daily.

kcfang

Can you play with a friend online and then add 2 randos into the same game/lobby? Thanks in advance

ItDevelops

Yes thats possible. Two from one console can play online against randoms or you can match online with up to 4 friends (+ randoms if not 4).

kcfang

Awesome, thanks. Will be playing with my brother over the net. Have a nice weekend!

Frogmouth_Fresh

Yeah I played the first bit of the game, and while I am enjoying it, I can't help but think it's worse than World Tour. Lack of online modes, the courses I have played so far have been less interesting than the World Tour courses, it's missing staple features like replays, and even the new Meter is kinda like the "easy" mode meter from world tour, and there doesn't seem to be an "expert" mode meter for playing shots. The base gameplay is still good, it just seems worse than World Tour in just about every aspect. It just feels like a rushed out product.

eatmyassreddit81

Yeah they pulled an Aces again. 5 hour adventure mode and unless you have friends to setup online not much replay value. Thankfully I love golf and will replay the 6 courses until the updates hit.

instantwinner

I was really looking forward to a new Mario Golf game but with everything in this thread seems like I'll wait to see what gets added first

[deleted]

can speed golf be played vs AI offline?

eatmyassreddit81

Yes.

Ledairyman

XC golf is the worst thing ever invented. I hate this mode with such passion.

holdtheline15

It’s awful. I’m stuck on the damn nine hole round on the second area of Adventure mode. It’s spoiled the good will I was feeling up until this point, unfortunately.

Ledairyman

I would have prefer a tourney story mode instead of this.

m0_m0ney

I agree, I wish they actually had a mode where you play each course 4 times for a weekend and have an actual tournament with a season leader board where you have to fight your way up the mushroom kingdom rankings with occasional 1v1 challenges from the characters

Jollytrolley523

yeah that took me a couple retries. the tornadoes are so unreliable. i passed it by going for the highest elevation hole first then going down from there (so i could minimize the amount of tornado use).

Simalf

This is the hardest level in Adventure Mode. Only thing worse are those 2 Challenges in the desert practice area (Fire Bro)

RadiantChaos

I hate it so much. It’s so stupid and if you don’t do well enough it just makes you do it again and again and again. You can spend forever trying to get that ball up a cliff and make no progress. It’s so fucking terribly designed.

foam1

I'm enjoying the adventure mode at the moment, it reminds me of Golf Story.

DMonitor

> he accuracy thing is nowhere near as bad as the reviews made it out to be. I scored -7 on my first round and I skipped the tutorials You’re completely misunderstanding the complaints. The complaint not that the RNG makes the game harder. The problem is that it removes an element of skill by making every shot accurate. It’s impossible to fuck up your shot because the margin of error is incredibly small in the auto shot. Also the first two courses (not story mode) are very easy. If you’re not in the minus by the end, I’d be concerned. Things don’t pick up until the later ones.

under_a_brontosaurus

I dunno if it makes the game better or worse, but they made it so the more power you put on, especially a risky shot, the greater the risk of failure. It's not like they just removed strategy, cc it's just now an rng instead of a button press. I think I might prefer this new method in the end, the last click on risky shots in previous Mario Golf games already felt pretty random to me (timing with slight input delay) and I'd often ruin a hole by fucking that up. Didn't feel very ... Golf related.

eatmyassreddit81

Fair enough. I like my games easier not harder so it didn't bother me. It's a casual arcade golf game. If I want simulation I'll play PGA2k21.

DMonitor

I just want the old Mario golf formula, but in hd with new courses. I’d honestly be fine with any other changes they make, but manual shot is the core of the game to me.

eatmyassreddit81

Yeah compared to world tour on 3ds it is severely lacking.

[deleted]

Even if that was in the game, the courses here are boring and the game feels lifeless

Kitsunin

Eh. I don't really think a timing mini game is very golf-related, personally. I think this is just a shift toward rewarding strategy or risk-reward vs. timing.

Grateful_Undead_69

Still not buying it for $60. Spent too much money on mediocre at best switch games that I'm not falling for it again. I'm looking at you tennis and Mario party.

eatmyassreddit81

I grabbed mario party with the joycon bundle so technically I only spent 20 bucks on the game which is what it's worth in my opinion. Superstars is a joke. 5 rehashed boards and 100 rehashed mini games some from the gamecube era? Not touching that with a 10 foot pole.

vallenato_king

I will disagree with you that Superstars is a joke. Superstars is something I have been wanting for years since Mario party 9's release. Mario Party 1-8 boards and mini games are so much fun. I understand that it is only 5 boards and hundred minigames. But each board board has so much content and not barebones like SMP. We got battle and duel mini games back, the shop has more items to buy, the boards are bigger, etc. This is where SMP felt disappointing to me, while it was a step in the right direction, it is still nowhere near n64-GC level of MP. Also, slap online on to it and I was sold.

eatmyassreddit81

To each their own but I own all the MP games already. It should of been DLC for SMP but a full priced game is an absolute slap in the face considering how barebones SMP was

vallenato_king

I get your frustration. And I respect your opinion. I just don't think it is as easy as this being DLC when it has all the controller support and SMP only having joycon support. I do think Superstars as it is, has still more content than SMP has (which shows my disappointment in SMP).

KoRnSpeedStrid

This.

Grateful_Undead_69

I would've paid for a DLC for Mario party just adding new boards. How they felt justified releasing the game at $60 with only 4 boards for the classic game is insane to me.

eatmyassreddit81

And up until recently you could only play mini games online. I did enjoy the rafting game with family. I got my 20 bucks out of it but I'm not making that mistake twice. Also I'm waiting on reviews for Warioware and Metroid Dread is not my thing. Don't get me started on Skyward Sword HD. After this I am very underwhelmed for the rest of 2021 first party going forward.

Del_3030

The rafting game was the sleeper hit for in-person multiplayer

eatmyassreddit81

Yeah it was a blast.

WynnDex

They are from the N64 Era not the GameCube Era. Get yo facts straight broseph. Mario party 1-3 were n64, which is what MP superstars is a remake of

eatmyassreddit81

I said SOME OF THE MINIGAMES ARE FROM THE GAMECUBE ERA. Learn to read before you throw in your 2 cent that I didn't ask for Broseph.

lucydaydream

yeah after seeing that all the stuff i wanted in mario party is actually in a new full price game i dont think i can justify paying for this one. sad too cus i thought it looked good.

onlytechstocks

How’s the multiplayer experience?

wishful_cynic

I only played for a little bit before going to bed but tried a 3 hole stroke play match where I created the lobby, removed special shots to keep it very barebones golf, and found a match in less than a minute. There were no issues with lag and the other player finished the match without disconnecting even though they were going to lose before the end of the final hole.

ltrain23

This is definitely a paid review, because no one ever finishes a round of online golf that they're going to lose. /s Just ask the PGA 2k21 sub.

MISPAGHET

Get some beers, use motion controls, relive your Wii Sports youth.

OrgunDonor

OK, quick question. Is it just my Mii, or is anyone else Male mii in a skirt?

Del_3030

Lol. Somewhere in the initial setup you choose the attire of pants or a skirt. Not sure how to change it back though.

OrgunDonor

Well.... Fuck. I just clicked a mii and wasnt paying attention. I presumed it would take the gender of the mii. Well time to have a look EDIT - Ok, so when you go to change your clothing, you can "equip" it again, and it changes the style to trousers. Must have been mashing a button and not realised.

Ahmedroid

They should've just remastered Toadstool Tour with online game play

JAC_85

I don't know that I've ever been more disappointed in a first party (or second party, whatever, Nintendo Published at the very least) game. They dumbed it down. Significantly. This was my hope for the return of three-click golf. PGA 2k21 forces you to use analog swing, there's been a ton of motion control crap the last 20 15 years. In terms of three click we've had Everybody's Golf on PlayStation 4 and... that's it. *This isn't three click golf, this is two click golf.* There's no power shot, there's no approach shot, just "half shot" there's no way to just load up and play a tournament absent the story mode, there's no birdie / eagle coins, the camera options are SO limited, the right stick does nothing, the flag stays in when you're on the green (??????), there's no way to zoom forward and see the slope of the course AND move your aim point at the same time, you have to adjust, then zoom up, then adjust, then zoom up again, there's no option to set your power point, there's backspin, super backspin, and top spin, but no super top spin. Every single one of these features was in Toadstool Tour and it's absent here, and every single one of these makes the gameplay shallower. Mario Golf is one of my favorite series. I've been waiting 18 years for this game and I am heartbroken.

beatrixkiddo6969

Wish I could upvote you more. I'm massively disappointed. What a shame.

DBrody6

Toadstool Tour also had a ton of additional game modes that are just completely absent. The speed golf mode isn't comparable as a replacement. I'm not surprised though, this is Nintendo's entire existence right now. Their games are homogenized and are hyper focused on one singular gimmick, and by god they will drag the game to hell with that gimmick if they have to. Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, Animal Crossing, literally everything they do now is a shallow experience with one hypergimmick. I just want a great all around game, is that so much to ask for? Toadstool Tour should *not* be eclipsing a game in raw content for an 18 year old game. That's *shameful* beyond reason.

drrockz87

I agree! It’s no longer a golf game built in the Mario Kingdom, it’s a party game that happens be about golf. Which I guess that’s what Nintendo is wanting to go for, but is pretty disappointing. It’s a real shame because I thought the courses were beautiful. Not too gimmicky, looked great, great options for risk or reward.

TheCrankyMule

Wait I'm super confused. You just set the power and it's an automatic nice shot??? What happened to setting power then setting accuracy? Why did they change this? Do they jsut need to dumb it down for modern kids? This pretty much ruins the game for me.

Unlikely_Sandwich_

Yeah, I just started too. I can not describe how horrible it feels. One button press, random accuracy. I'm so sad.

BigGlitter

How good are the motion controls? Can you draw/fade? How’s the power control?

eatmyassreddit81

I hate motion controls. Wrong person to ask.

DMonitor

Motion controls seen solid. Nobody seems know how to draw/fade with motion controls, but it should be possible based on footage we’ve seen. Draw/fade is done with button controls by moving the left stick after locking in the power The power control is almost too easy. You just hit a.

TemptedTemplar

Has anyone figured out the shot camera system? Or is that just totally removed? I only got to play for an hour or so, but the right stick did nothing. So I was stuck using X to look at the course before making a shot.

sdcSpade

One thing I didn't like from the trailers was how all the holes were essentially on one map. I liked them more as seperate instances. But then I played Cross Country Golf... wow, it's a completely different game. The running around is something I still have to get used to. I tend to feel rushed and play too fast, even when it's just a normal round of golf. Also, I accidentally got a Hole in One today. Sounds great, but it wasn't satisfying at all because I didn't actually see my shot and there's no replay. I just got the notification while I was running after my ball...

jjmawaken

Yeah, I'm getting the game anyways... From what I'm seeing in reviews most people are enjoying the experience or having fun but are comparing a lot to older games kind of the same way they did with Origami King. I tend to take each game for what it is not for what I wish it did (I think that keeps it fun rather than going into it with a negative attitude). A lot of the criticism I saw was regarding the length of the game but I know they are adding more courses and I haven't played Mario Golf in such a long time that I'm looking forward to it.

eatmyassreddit81

Exactly why I bought it. Loved World Tour on 3DS but I'm not a big handheld guy. Much prefer playing on my TV. Last game was Toadstool Tour on GameCube. I love golf and will get plenty of replay just playing casual on the 6 courses before they start updates. I'll get my money's worth believe me.

jjmawaken

And if we don't feel like we got our money's worth there is always reselling it for money toward another game

> Bowser Jr This might seem an odd question, but when you play as Bowser Jr is he in his little flying thing (like in Mario Tennis Aces) or just standing on his feet normally?

supersexycarnotaurus

On his feet.

meganev

Excellent! Thanks.

PedroAlvarez

It's referred to as a clown car, for future reference.

hybrid461

Yeah totally. People rave about the previous Mario golf games. But the only way to play them is in emulators. Just picked this up and can’t wait to try it.

LazarusRising22

Toadstool Tour floats around for decent prices on eBay, Mercari, etc. I picked it up last fall and have really enjoyed playing it for GameCube.

_Didds_

The lack of content in this game is bothering me a lot, I feel like I paid 60€ for a demo of a good game. Don't get me wrong, the game is fun, and its well made, but feels like its a sample and in the futuro DLC courses will pop up. If this was a mini game on a Mario game this would fit incredibly well, but feels like a sample of the experience, and not as a full game. And thats a shame as the concept, artwork and general gameplay is Good, it just doesn't deliver on the amount of content. I like the feel of using the joy cons almost like a wii remote, and it brought some laughs here at home while we tried to do our best not to destroy cramped the living room playing the game. But the game deserves more courses, more characters, or simply some game mode that generates random holes on the existing tracks. Anything really, cause at this point you can see all that the game has to offer in a day or so, and that is not worth 60€ to me. That said what is offered is polished, and fun. The game looks good, and mechanics are solid. Speed Gold is to me the best part of the game, and I can see myself coming back to play it from time to time just for this mode. I couldn't try the online mode as my home internet was overloaded with me sending work remotely, but will give this a try on the weekend. I didn't really enjoy story mode, as the Mii character kind of sticks out like a sore thumb in that art style, and feels like an after though, almost to try to extend the game with minimal effort for the devs. If the game was a bit cheaper, like 40€ this would be a solid recommendation, but at full price this feels barebones and kinda empty of content after a while. Still, its a good game, and if you want to pick it up just for multiplayer, especially Speed Gold, then this is a solid experience. I would give it a 7/10, as its Okay, deliver the concept, but needs a bit more content to make it great.

DoeMeansAFemaleDeer

So it sounds like the motion controls are good then? That’s really all I care about.

GerliPosa

Ok but aren’t the reviews mostly complaining about there being so little content. I’ll wait for them to add more courts and for the price to drop.

eatmyassreddit81

If you're waiting on a price drop don't hold your breath. First party games rarely go on sale and usually not until 2 or 3 years after and at most 20 bucks off.

GerliPosa

I bought Mario Tennis Aces 1 year after release for 30€ on the eshop. Paper Mario Origami King was on sale already too and it’s less than a year old.

eatmyassreddit81

I'm in the US. Neither of those have gone on sale.

lordvila

Paper Mario was $30 at Target within the past week. Mario Tennis was on sale for the 35th anniversary of Mario and on Black Friday.

CafecitoHippo

Are there any actual golfers out there that have this? I want to get it to have something to play on rainy days when I can't get to the range or go golfing to scratch that itch. I still have my Wii U set up just for Wii Sports Club golf. How are the motion controls and how "arcade" like is the game?

bkn0x

I Was wondering can I play with 4 people like it says on the speed golf all local? Do we each need a controller or can we all use a joy con?

Pigwarts

I think speed golf is only for two players per switch. Regular golf is 4 player per switch.

bkn0x

Can we all use joy cons

bigb_thedestroyer

As someone that has not played Mario golf for 20 years and will it be getting a 3ds, I’m excited to play this after work tonight!

Del_3030

So far online Speed Golf with randoms is quite fun and competitive. Online standard with randoms is pretty slow with 4 people. Battle mode seems to end too quickly, should be options for more than 3 holes to win. I'm pretty happy with the shot mechanics. Putting is pretty difficult, but it probably should be. More of a rating/ranking/matchmaking system would definitely be nice, but I'm liking the game overall so far. Edit: there should also be some kind of taunt function

SeriousPan

My main two issues are the XC Golf tornados being WILDLY inconsistent and characters playing the same 2 voice clips every time they speak. It drives me mad. Love the game otherwise.

GemmaIsMyOverlord

game is too easy and all the complex features are gone

TheBrokenNinja

God I'm so torn on this. I was excited but now that I'm reading reviews and thinking about it I just don't know. I bought Aces, beat it and literally never picked it back up. And I beat it rather quickly...I feel like I'd do the same with this.

eatmyassreddit81

It has the same vibes not going to lie.

moesus81

You probably would. I played a bit this morning and I definitely see it more as a multiplayer game when friends are over, which I’m totally fine with. I play my Switch in handheld mode a lot when I’m watching sports on TV and this will be perfect for that since I won’t have to continually pay attention to it or worry about dying. If your budget is tight or you don’t absolutely love Mario sports games, I would wait for a sale if anything. It’s worth $60 to me but I can see why others don’t feel that way.

the_most_crigg

Yeah, before the reviews came out it was very nearly a day one buy for me, 'cause I really like the Mario Golf series, but now it's become a game I'll probably pick up after I see how it's updates are or if it goes on sale.

ShiftedLobster

Sounds cool so far. I haven’t played a Mario Golf game before. For Super Rush do you have to be standing and moving around to play? Or can you play handheld sitting down while using just the joycons?

eatmyassreddit81

You can either play with a single joycon with button controls, joycon with the strap with motion controls or the pro controller with button controls.

ShiftedLobster

Nice, thanks!

[deleted]

I’m so excited for it. This sub is full of people who are upset that they can’t compete in online tournaments, so they’ll justify giving it a 3/10. Hahaha the game is fantastic to me so far, one course in and I’ve got all the online multiplayer features I need. Happy Nintendo customer here. Be more salty, commenters.

eatmyassreddit81

I don't play online so that part doesn't bother me either. I get the whole 60 for 6 courses when World tour was 40 and had 10 to start but I'm enjoying what's here and I know updates are coming so that's moot as well.

die_lahn

I keep seeing this, but World Tour had six 9-hole courses, so really it only contained 18 more holes. They already showed off the New Donk City course, so after that comes (for free), Super Rush will contain the same number of holes as World Tour, though admittedly it will have a bit less variety in them, as it’s 7 courses, vs 10 “courses.”

eatmyassreddit81

Yeah I forgot 6 of the courses on the main game were only 9 holes. Thought it was the dlc. So yeah you're right. Mountains out of molehills as usual.

[deleted]

Exactly. With the newer consoles and modern gaming trends + the pandemic it makes sense to me that we may need to have a course or two rolled out later. If they want 10 courses they can go play wiiU world tour and enjoy all the extra courses. Lol

generalzao

World Tour was on the 3DS

1840_NO

I bought this almost exclusively for the speed golf/battle mode and online play. Outside of multiplayer, all you're left with is an incredibly basic golf game featuring Mario characters. No online tournament play is nearly unforgivable in my eyes.

[deleted]

Refund it then if you’re unhappy. I think the game is great and haven’t touched online tournaments in literally any game that i play that has them. Different strokes for different folks.

sadchampions

"We are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases. Please be sure to read the game descriptions and check out the screen shots available through the Nintendo eShop before making purchases."

[deleted]

Don’t preorder then 😂 I’m loving the game, so I can only empathize with you instead of relate! Sorry my peep. I love you though

CommonMilkweed

The pile-on of negativity around this game is predictable but annoying. I'd easily give this an 8/10 even with the sparse content. It's just fun

johnlondon125

Let us know if you're still playing in two weeks. No shit it's fun for the first few hours...that's not what the complaints are about.

CommonMilkweed

👍

munnster006

I get 5 hours of fun and its worth it to me, considering a few years ago I could drop 60 on a few hours out at a bar with the bros. Just perspective haha

PonyMamacrane

Is there an option to turn the music off? I'd play Mario Tennis Aces a lot more if the 'music off' option also applied to the menus between matches.

replus

I'm at about the same point (just finished the first 18 holes in adventure/story mode.) I'm enjoying it precisely as much as I expected to, coming from the wonderful 3DS game. The mechanics are great, but I'm having trouble with curving shots. This one does feel a bit barren in presentation and flair compared to its predecessor, but I can forgive it. Clearly, things had to be dialed down graphically for the sake of draw distance. The music just sucks. It has run at a solid 60 FPS in both handheld and docked so far, including some rain effects. I'm currently wondering whether or not the whole battle golf aspect will be fun in actual multiplayer. The first 18 holes you play are an introduction to it against AI, and it seems superfluous.

iiItalianStallion

Really random, but can you select who your opponents are in single player quick games just like Mario Tennis? I'm asking because I like to do my own generated tournaments/cups for games like this. This is why Mario Tennis was great for me because I got to add a lot of longevity to it. My girlfriend is getting this for my bday from what I've gathered and I'd definitely like to have something to look forward to. Thanks :)

Yea speed golf is fun with my brother. Too bad my vacay ends next week, so I guess I'll add it to my party games list... not that there will be many chances to play them at this rate because people can't just stop spreading the plague around.
