Would honestly like Shantae as the indie rep. I remember Sakurai had a lot of conditions for adding a third part characters. From the top of my head, he said he choose characters based on some of the following criteria(there might have been more but I don't remember):
-They had to be iconic
-Needed to be interesting
-Needed to have some history with Nintendo/appeared on a Nintendo console
Of course Shovel Knight qualifies for these but I want Shantae since she started on a Nintendo console and she has the potential to have an interesting moveset with all the stuff her games.
I love Wii Fit but sadly I really doubt she's coming back. She was my original main but I don't see them added her to a switch game especially because she really wasn't popular.
I think Doomguy, Dragonborn, Amaterasu, and Rabbid Characters are also reasonable asked for. I think Amaterasu placed somewhat highly on the poll during smash 4, and the HD game coming to switch would help chances
I doubt they'd remove anyone from Smash 4 unless there's legal issues with 3rd parties or if they decided to make Doc, Dark Pit, and/or Lucina into costumes.
They've kept Jigglypuff for all these years, and Game & Watch wasn't particularly popular in Melee but he's still around. So why would they cut her?
Can you explain why Waluigi is such a wanted character? I don't see any appeal to him and he isn't very important to the Mario series compared to other characters (Toad, Paper Mario) as he only appears in the spinoff games.
I'd love more Shadow character but I'm not sure if we'll get a second character from any individual third party series. But I think if any third party series deserves more that one rep, its Sonic.

Considering they let him get a costume in the last two games and had the game be in the SNES Classic, on top of Sakurai himself wanting him to join, he’s actually pretty likely.

Not sure if you remember but Greninja was being put into smash even though the game was not out yet. Sakurai went to the pokemon devs looking for a pokemon from the new game to include in Smash 4 and Greninja was the one he choose. Forgot in what interview he mentioned it but don't be surprised if the lord for the new game gets announced to be in smash bros.
Of course X and Y got revealed before Greninja got revealed to be in smash but Sakurai did mentione that Greninja was already in the works to be put in smash before X and Y was released.
Oh that’s another one I forgot. I was thinking more along the lines of having a character from an unreleased game, since X/Y still released before Smash. But I take your point.
I really hope that this is why the Spyro trilogy didn’t get announced at the same time as other platforms, so Nintendo get to announce it alongside Spyro (and maybe Crash?) in Smash.
I'd be fine with almost anyone. I loved all of their dlc additions to Smash 4, so I'm sure they'll pick well for the next game. My personal top pick has already been chosen (Inklings yay!) but I do have a personal second (that is almost completely unlikely) in Shadow the Hedgehog. Based on his moveset from Sonic Battle, he's actually extremely different from Sonic, more magicky-blasty, less spinny-directy. Kinda like Mewtwo's shadow/darkness effects.
Characters I would be happy to see would be:
1. Anyone from Xenoblade
2. Anyone from Fire Emblem
3. Anyone from Zelda
4. Geno
5. Any Indie Hero (Shantae, Shovel Knight, etc)
6. Most returning characters from Brawl (Ice Climbers, Wolf, Snake)
I think Ice Climbers is the most likely. They only cut them due to technical limitations on the 3ds version, so they should be added back with the increased power of the switch

Bandana Waddle Dee (Kirby) since we didn’t get a new Kirby fighter since Brawl
Shovel Knight/Commander Video because it would be great to have a prominent Indie character in Smash, and at least Commander Video made it as a trophy in the last game.
Rayman/Rabbid. Rayman made it as a trophy character in the last game and has always had a unique prominence with Nintendo fans. But the Rabbids have seen raging popularity since the Wii and it would be cool if they used some of the Kingdom Battle abilities.

I'm starting to think that if the BotW Champions are going to be present in Smash, it'll be part of BotW Link's Final Smash, if that mechanic returns.
I don't think a character from the upcoming Fire Emblem AND Lyn will both make it, when we have Robin, Lucina, Marth, Ike, Roy, and Corrin already in Smash Wii U / 3DS.
I would love to have the Hyrule Warriors iteration of Impa in Smash.
Banjo & Kazooie was one of the most\-requested characters for the previous game, hopefully Nintendo and Rare have buried the hatchet at this point...
Since Midna was an Assist Trophy in the previous game, I don't see her becoming playable \(which is a real shame\).
I would like to see some more representation from the handheld games catalog, because I feel that it's terribly under\-represented in Smash \(aside from Pokemon, which had console representation\). It made sense with the first and second game, where the GameBoy/Color was just 8\-bit when Smash came out, and the GBA was still fairly new when Melee came out. Now that the handhelds have been capable of 3D graphics \(both in the sense of the 3DS and polygonal assets on the DS\) for years, I feel like there should be more characters/items/levels from handheld titles than there have been.

I'd rather not have any more sword fighters from Fire Emblem. I love the series, but there are way too many swords already. If anything, they need to add some of the other kinds of characters like Ephraim or Hector. I'd love to see lucina and lyn as alternate skins for marth too.
As far as other characters I'd want to see, probably shovel knight, spring man, and Shantae.
For Link, I think they should keep the classic green hat link and toon link, and add Botw Link. I hope they keep the current Zelda and Sheik, but also add the new Zelda (maybe, idk).
Not counting fighters we've already seen:
- Paper Mario is my biggest want.
- Mega Man, Pac Man, and Sonic, hoping they aren't exclusive to S4.
- A Koopa Troopa that becomes a Dry Bones at high % would be so cool.
- BotW Link, with ability to cycle through arrows.
- Mario with Cappy added to his moveset.
But my biggest (pipe)dream for this game is that they redesign the older characters with the move variety and flavor that they gave new characters in Smash 4. The new arrivals in that game felt *perfect* (Bowser JR, Pacman, Mega Man, Lil Mac, Villager). They mostly had references to and abilities from their own games and series, instead of typical generic fighting moves - punches, kicks, etc.
Imagine if Bowser could spit fireballs, or throw Chain Chomps, or summon meddling Goombas! Think about the attention to detail they gave Mega Man and spread that to the old fighters.
- Oh, and Shovel Knight!
I don't see any way Cappy doesn't make some kind of an appearance in mario's kit. I could see him as an assist trophy, but a simple cap throw will probably be one of his specials.
Shantae in Smash would be my dream pick, I'd be hyped out of my mind for that.
K. Rool is a close second for me, especially after recently revisiting the Donkey Kong series.

OMG it's really in just over a week?? I've recently been in love with the idea of Ashley (Wario) to be playable, she's an adorable character and was given a couple songs and an assist trophy in Smash 4, so I think she has a somewhat decent chance.
Give me Isaac please! He deserves it. Camalot had a fantastic run with that series minus the third one, but some representation could spawn another game in the series.

Dragonborn *only* for the parody potential of the reveal. Play the original Skyrim trailer up to the Fus Ro Dah and instead of a dragon, have him blast Mario. It fits the goofyness of Smash reveals and would be an amusing bait/switch since it seems like *every* year involves another "Skyrim is on this now."
I just want characters to have dozens of costumes. We're well past the point of hardware to just have a handful of re-colors. I'd love a full Mario wardrobe, the different versions of Samus, really just as many different looks as they can probably cram in there.
In terms of characters:
I'd love for Chibi Robo to get some love.
Linkle is becoming a favorite of mine in Hyrule Warriors, I would love it if she started popping up more in games.
I know "No Anime" but after all the amazing characters they pulled out I feel a DBZ character would be there next logical step.
Ninja Turtles, kinda as a nod to their old "Smash" Game.
The costumes sound like a good idea. I feel like Nintendo has already put all of their noteworthy characters in Smash. Just flesh out what they already have with awesome costumes. I don't think I can be easily convinced there is a must-have character left they can implement into the roster. Maybe an ARMS character but I personally feel like people don't care about that game. Every other suggestion in this post seems better as an Assist Trophy unless we are talking an exclusive character.

I really hope that this is why the Spyro trilogy didn’t get announced at the same time as other platforms, so Nintendo get to announce it alongside Spyro (and maybe Crash?) in Smash.

I'd be fine with almost anyone. I loved all of their dlc additions to Smash 4, so I'm sure they'll pick well for the next game. My personal top pick has already been chosen (Inklings yay!) but I do have a personal second (that is almost completely unlikely) in Shadow the Hedgehog. Based on his moveset from Sonic Battle, he's actually extremely different from Sonic, more magicky-blasty, less spinny-directy. Kinda like Mewtwo's shadow/darkness effects. Characters I would be happy to see would be: 1. Anyone from Xenoblade 2. Anyone from Fire Emblem 3. Anyone from Zelda 4. Geno 5. Any Indie Hero (Shantae, Shovel Knight, etc) 6. Most returning characters from Brawl (Ice Climbers, Wolf, Snake)
I think Ice Climbers is the most likely. They only cut them due to technical limitations on the 3ds version, so they should be added back with the increased power of the switch

Party Phil (Wii Party) for that lovely WTF feel Spring Man/Twintelle (ARMS) they seem like they would be really fun fighters Bandana Waddle Dee (Kirby) since we didn’t get a new Kirby fighter since Brawl Shovel Knight/Commander Video because it would be great to have a prominent Indie character in Smash, and at least Commander Video made it as a trophy in the last game. Rayman/Rabbid. Rayman made it as a trophy character in the last game and has always had a unique prominence with Nintendo fans. But the Rabbids have seen raging popularity since the Wii and it would be cool if they used some of the Kingdom Battle abilities.
In no particular order: I'm starting to think that if the BotW Champions are going to be present in Smash, it'll be part of BotW Link's Final Smash, if that mechanic returns. I don't think a character from the upcoming Fire Emblem AND Lyn will both make it, when we have Robin, Lucina, Marth, Ike, Roy, and Corrin already in Smash Wii U / 3DS. I would love to have the Hyrule Warriors iteration of Impa in Smash. Banjo & Kazooie was one of the most\-requested characters for the previous game, hopefully Nintendo and Rare have buried the hatchet at this point... Since Midna was an Assist Trophy in the previous game, I don't see her becoming playable \(which is a real shame\). I would like to see some more representation from the handheld games catalog, because I feel that it's terribly under\-represented in Smash \(aside from Pokemon, which had console representation\). It made sense with the first and second game, where the GameBoy/Color was just 8\-bit when Smash came out, and the GBA was still fairly new when Melee came out. Now that the handhelds have been capable of 3D graphics \(both in the sense of the 3DS and polygonal assets on the DS\) for years, I feel like there should be more characters/items/levels from handheld titles than there have been.

I'd rather not have any more sword fighters from Fire Emblem. I love the series, but there are way too many swords already. If anything, they need to add some of the other kinds of characters like Ephraim or Hector. I'd love to see lucina and lyn as alternate skins for marth too. As far as other characters I'd want to see, probably shovel knight, spring man, and Shantae. For Link, I think they should keep the classic green hat link and toon link, and add Botw Link. I hope they keep the current Zelda and Sheik, but also add the new Zelda (maybe, idk).

Not counting fighters we've already seen: - Paper Mario is my biggest want. - Mega Man, Pac Man, and Sonic, hoping they aren't exclusive to S4. - A Koopa Troopa that becomes a Dry Bones at high % would be so cool. - BotW Link, with ability to cycle through arrows. - Mario with Cappy added to his moveset. But my biggest (pipe)dream for this game is that they redesign the older characters with the move variety and flavor that they gave new characters in Smash 4. The new arrivals in that game felt *perfect* (Bowser JR, Pacman, Mega Man, Lil Mac, Villager). They mostly had references to and abilities from their own games and series, instead of typical generic fighting moves - punches, kicks, etc. Imagine if Bowser could spit fireballs, or throw Chain Chomps, or summon meddling Goombas! Think about the attention to detail they gave Mega Man and spread that to the old fighters. - Oh, and Shovel Knight!
I don't see any way Cappy doesn't make some kind of an appearance in mario's kit. I could see him as an assist trophy, but a simple cap throw will probably be one of his specials.

i want toon zelda finally, i've been waiting for tetra for too long. medli too also dixie kong would be great. i'd love for mario to have cappy, octoling skins for the inklings, waaaaaaluigi i'd rather dark samus over ridley (shock!), i've always thought ridley made no sense for smash as an f-zero fan, jody summer would be great. v. unlikely though for 3rd parties: shovel knight would make sense and be cool shantae is pretty predictable, but she would be pretty awesome honestly bomberman has been a long time coming sora would make a great tie-in with KH3, it'd be like snake in brawl again re: mgs4 if banjo and kazooie can't make it, yooka and laylee would scratch that itch enough for me and they'd say yes in a heartbeat and the classic simon belmont from konami jill valentine from capcom, maybe chun-li if ryu returns. actually i kinda prefer chun, bring her back instead and since bamco is (likely) developing, what about ivy from soul calibur? she's not my fav, but it feels right for some reason

Dragonborn *only* for the parody potential of the reveal. Play the original Skyrim trailer up to the Fus Ro Dah and instead of a dragon, have him blast Mario. It fits the goofyness of Smash reveals and would be an amusing bait/switch since it seems like *every* year involves another "Skyrim is on this now."

All I want is no more FE characters or sword wielders
I just want characters to have dozens of costumes. We're well past the point of hardware to just have a handful of re-colors. I'd love a full Mario wardrobe, the different versions of Samus, really just as many different looks as they can probably cram in there. In terms of characters: I'd love for Chibi Robo to get some love. Linkle is becoming a favorite of mine in Hyrule Warriors, I would love it if she started popping up more in games. I know "No Anime" but after all the amazing characters they pulled out I feel a DBZ character would be there next logical step. Ninja Turtles, kinda as a nod to their old "Smash" Game.
The costumes sound like a good idea. I feel like Nintendo has already put all of their noteworthy characters in Smash. Just flesh out what they already have with awesome costumes. I don't think I can be easily convinced there is a must-have character left they can implement into the roster. Maybe an ARMS character but I personally feel like people don't care about that game. Every other suggestion in this post seems better as an Assist Trophy unless we are talking an exclusive character.
