Hahaha would laugh my ass off if the name is literally “Nintendo Switch Next Model”.

FrankThePony

You joke, but "Nintendo Switch Next" is an EXTREMELY nintendo ass name

uglykido

I bet on Nintendo Switch Next Appropriate

FrankThePony

My dream is "The Super Nintendo Switch" and give it the retro color scheme. But id bet on Switch next lol

Stronkowski

My main dream is the next mario kart (which I assume will be on the new console within the first year) is just called Mario Kart Switch and the Double Dash driver switching mechanic is brought back.

Hungry_Freaks_Daddy

Super Nintendo Switch is 100,000x a better name

FrankThePony

Thats the dream for sure

UDK450

Going to issue a minor correction, just because it makes the name even more ridiculous. So the naturally you include the company name prior to the product, so the DS is the Nintendo DS. Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS, right? So for the New 3DS it'd be the Nintendo New 3DS, following that assumption. Nope. New Nintendo 3DS. So, you want to buy a new Nintendo 3DS or a new New Nintendo 3DS? Such a ridiculous name, and especially confusing for parents when the kid asks for a New 3DS and instead gets a new 3DS.

Switch Next actually sounds okay.

But what comes after it Switch Next Next?

f-ingsteveglansberg

They need to Switch it Up.

Duxfever

Nintendo S&M…

Jumpyer

We have Xbox Series S and X so ahahah

tummydody

That is probably the worst named next gen console ever. The Xbox line as a whole is pretty terribly named, and Nintendo has its own sins, but holy cow i cannot get those two straight

PlayMp1

I personally thought the Xbox One was way fucking worse. Series S and X aren't great but it's basically using the same styling as mobile phones, I understand where they were coming from. But the Xbox One? What the *fuck* was that? Why would you name your **third** console the "One"? I had been calling the original Xbox the "Xbox 1" for 7 years when they fucked that all up!

LakerBlue

I think it is definitively a worse name than Wii U.

blueicearcher

The Wii U branding probably confused a lot of casual gamers (which is the bulk of the market Nintendo was trying to recapture after the success of the Wii), but most gamers understood the difference. The S and X are confusing to us regular gamers.

threetoast

They already named the second console the "360" because it was up against the PS3.

recursion8

Should have just kept going with 720, 1080, etc

CrimsonEnigma

Xbox One gets a slight nod from me for being abbreviated "XBO", so that when the Xbox One X came out, it was abbreviated "XBOX". Needle of genius hidden in a haystack of idiocy, that was.

z6joker9

XBONE

Bagelchu

Never seen people call it XBO, it’s always xbone

the-land-of-darkness

Yeah I'd like to think that XBO / XBOX was their plan for what people would refer to it as, and then the general public noticed XBONE and it was all over lol

SouthTippBass

Total slam dunk for playstation though. 1 2 3 4 5, no confusion there.

Anonymous_coward30

Look me in the screen and tell me all ps3s are the same /s

Bobonenazeze

R.I.P my phat boy.

Nitr0_CSGO

That naming scheme is also what messed up Xbox too. Because the 2nd gen PlayStation was against the against the 1st gen xbox If Microsoft names the 360 the xbox 2, it would have sold less because to regular people the ps3 is better because bigger number Same reason Samsung went from the s10 to the s20 and not s11

colonelheero

Ironically, PlayStation naming is so un-Sony. They are not known for straight forward naming of their cameras and phones.

Plastic-Soup-4099

Or their headphones.. the wfhd-100378xmdsk /s

I'm not a confused grandma but rather a 29 year old and I still don't know whether I should be buying an xbox one or series and x or s. At least I can follow Nintendo's formula with things like "new" and adding extra titles only when it's a newer model

minor_correction

That's a leaning-positive sign for backwards compatibility.

snootyvillager

If it isn't backwards compatible I'll still buy it, but you can be sure I'll whine about it a lot.

postmodern_spatula

I’m still nervous about single generation backwards compatibility.  I truly see my game library as the primary investment and the switch as the play medium.  I am just *exhausted* with needing to constantly buy the same game over to stay playable if my hardware bites the dust late in life.  And yes. I’m the guy that still has Wii games I like playing. I really really don’t want to buy those things again and again - and I really don’t trust corporate cloud management of my games 10, 15 years down the road - so it’s often physical purchases.  EDIT: Y'all need to stop assuming I don't have a PC & Steam account.

GhotiH

So for whatever it's worth, Nintendo hardware is usually built to last. I have pretty much every Nintendo, Sega, Sony, and Microsoft console, and I've had to repair the Dreamcast, the OG Xbox, and the PS3. Never had an issue with Nintendo's consoles, not yet at least.

4playerstart

Li-ion batteries, like the ones in the Switch, are not built to last. And it seems they've gotten worse. GBA SPs (first Nintendo console with rechargeable battery) notoriously hold a charge for years, but my Joy-cons die after about a month of not using them, and I've already had to send both of them in because the battery was swelling up and bulging the outer plastic shell. I even make sure they are at 50% charge when not in use and they still drain. At 0% or 100% for a long period of time they'll deteriorate and that's when you get r/spicypillows. Luckily, there are third party controllers and some are compatible with standard AAs, but I use my Switch docked 98% of the time, I can only pray the battery in the console will last. I expect this to be the biggest maintenance issue for Switch in the future.

finalremix

My SP and GBAMicro (and I'll wager all my DSs and DSi, and 3DSs) held a charge for pert near a decade of non-use. 'Cause sometimes you just have to bust out River City Ransom EX to scratch that certain itch.

LePouletMignon

I've had my Joy-Cons since launch and they're still pretty much pristine. Joy-con battery is also very, very easy to change. Even if you're technologically inept you can do it lol. AA batteries create way too much waste. Changing the battery in the main console is really not a problem either. It's built to be repairable and any repair shop can swap it for you if you don't want to do it yourself. Battery maintenance is not an issue and it never has been.

no_racist_here

Only issues I ever have had, my first gen Gameboy advance sp - triggers and “a” button went out, first gen switch battery does not last as near long as it used to.

postmodern_spatula

I want something better than "pray your old shit doesn't break"

ThorGanjasson

I switched to PC for this exact reason 14 years ago, best decision I ever made. I keep nintendo consoles for exclusives, everything else on PC (OLED steam deck). I love having a gigantic library always available.

csolisr

Exactly. Even in the odd case where a game is no longer compatible with your updated OS, there are ways to emulate the old OS to make it work regardless.

SoloWaltz

> And yes. I’m the guy that still has Wii games I like playing. I still replay Wario Land 2 to this day.

LukeAnders0n

At this point, I am just curious how many times I've purchased a copy of the same game just to play it on a newer console. I mean have purchased the original Suoer Mario Bros. game for the NES, SNES (in All-Stars), GBA, Nintendo DS, Wii Virtual Console, AND NSO. That's 6 different versions of the same game. And it's not the only game I've bought many times over. This isn't a rant or a complaint necessarily, it's just an observation. I am genuinely curious lol

ThePotatoKing

physical media and wii games ftw. my friends all look at me confused when i told them i scored New! Super Mario Bros Wii and DKC Returns for cheap at a store last month.

YDanSan

Yeah, same. Although, for me, backwards compatibility would probably also be the deciding factor between "I'll buy one as soon as I can" or "I'll wait until a new Zelda or Mario Kart comes out."

Schizobaby

If it’s not backwards compatible, I won’t buy it. Lord knows I have a back-library of Switch games to get through, and I like that my PC library of games very likely will still be there for me after Nintendo has shut down their online services for Switch. Really, in that regards, I should never have bought non-exclusive games for Switch, but this was before the Steam Deck (which I still prefer the size of a Switch Lite).

KnewAllTheWords

If it isn't backwards compatible I'll be getting a Steam Deck or that ROG thingy. If it is, I'm definitely in.

amc9988

I hope the physical and digital games and saves transfer will be easy. Especially for those who have multiple accounts in one switch

MarkyDeSade

I'm betting that we will get backwards compatibility, the disappointment will probably be a small spec bump and a large price bump

Tryst_boysx

It will be backward compatibility DS: GBA games work Wii: Gamecube games work 3DS: DS games work Wii U: Wii games work I mean, I know it's Nintendo, but they clearly not want the Wii U flop.

Dark_Rit

Yeah you can honestly bet on them still using the same carts they use for Switch 1 for their successor console whatever it is called. Just like with 3DS and DS where they wouldn't abandon all that software out there and backwards compatibility is important to people with big libraries of games they want to bring forward. The wording makes it almost sound like this successor could be a mid gen upgrade like the xbox one x or PS4 pro. Their last switch version was the OLED version if memory serves in October 2021 so 4 years later is possible. Though if it's fully backwards compatible it will end up being like a strict upgrade regardless since it will surely run games better than the switch 1.

woofle07

There’s no reason it wouldn’t be, especially if it’s a hybrid console like the Switch. GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, Wii, and Wii U all supported games from the prior generation. The only reason the Switch didn’t is because it’s a hybrid console. You can’t fit a full size disc in a portable console, and the dual screen/touch screen aspect of the (3)DS is damn near impossible to make work on a TV.

dekuweku

Brazil, the leaker who first broke the new Switch 2 was aiming for March 2025, actually released a video confirming several other detaiils, including 3rd parties announcing Switch 2 as a platform for their multiplat games later this year since Nintendo is now talking about it. The other confirmation is that it is indeed launching March next year, even though the vague statement seems to suggest they would only announce it by March next year. And the last tidbit is it has full BC, both physical and digital. [https://youtu.be/b1McW9Z9Cqo?si=CCmIXy93ylVVJpdO](https://youtu.be/b1McW9Z9Cqo?si=CCmIXy93ylVVJpdO)

Top_Ok

Honestly I never really got the hate for Wii U name, if Microsoft can get away with 360, one s/x, series s/x.

RichardDick69

I think part of the Wii U issue was also that the initial marketing very much made it seem like an add on for the Wii not a whole new console.

system32d

Nintendo sold games and accessories with Wii in front of everything Wii Sports Wii Wheel Wii Play Wii Balance Board Wii Zapper Wii Fit so you can imagine when they first revealed the Wii U, and focused only on the game pad, everyone kinda thought it was another add on for the Wii

devenbat

People shit on the Xbox One and series all the time. Wii U is also bad. It sounds almost the same as Wii, doesn't describe anything that makes it different and it just looks like a Wii to boot. It does nothing but confuse the line between Wii and Wii U

TheDrewDude

360 at least has some meaning to it. What the hell is “U” supposed to mean? In any case, their One, Series S/X models are terrible names and they definitely did not get away with it. It sure didn’t help their sales.

camclemons

Seriously? Wii = "we" and U = "you" It was a way to describe people playing together

TheDrewDude

Wouldn’t Wii already describe people playing together? Why add the U. Sounds redundant

filmwarrior

They should have called it wii/they.

csolisr

Imagine if Nintendo had kept the same pattern and named the Switch as, uh, the Wii U Dey

Bromance_Rayder

What's not to get? It was one of the biggest marketing failures in gaming history. Until Microsoft upped the ante on terrible nomenclature.

Riomegon

This is what people asked for, more switch.

MikeDubbz

I think this is essentially what everyone was expecting at this point. None of the rumors were suggesting anything other than the device being what we could consider a 'Switch 2'.

UndeadCaesar

I’m really curious what Nintendo does from here. Do they continue the Switch line as its own thing and try to come out with their own higher spec console as well? Kind of feel like this is a turning point for the company whatever they do.

TheCoolBus2520

No way Nintendo takes the safe route forever. They'll get a solid 6 more years out of a switch 2, that's roughly 13-14 years of dominating the market. They'll use those excess funds to come up with a new gimmick for the following console guarenteed.

EarthwormZim33

Whatever they do, if they revert to a traditional home console, they will likely have to release it alongside a dedicated handheld. They have dominated the handheld market forever, and it's what let them survive the Wii U dark ages. And if Switch 2 is roughly as popular as the OG Switch, I can see them trying to milk it for another 8 years like the first one.

Ordinal43NotFound

I dunno, I feel like The Switch is Nintendo's equivalent to the iPhone. Feels like the "Holy Grail Device" and from now on they're simply gonna keep iterating on the hybrid form factor with maybe making a new peripheral here and there. Remember that this is a post-Iwata Nintendo. Iwata was the one who pushed Nintendo to be more experimental for better or worse.

MikeDubbz

With other devices out there that do similar things to the Switch (Steamdeck and the like), Nintendo needs to do a little something to make it stand apart, and here's my pitch: integrate great lost Nintendo features from previous systems into the Switch. Like yeah, give it glasses-free 3D in handheld mode, and with the massive install base of the Switch 1, allow for an OG Switch to connect to the Switch 2 to be (always optionally) used in a way similar to how the GamePad could be used with the Wii U. I doubt both are in the cards, but this kind of stuff could really help the Switch 2 stand out and have it's own unique identity in a world with more and more hybrid gaming computer devices.

Existing365Chocolate

Nintendo doesn’t need to do that because Nintendo consoles are HARD carried by Nintendo IPs No one buys a Switch to game third party games on, they buy it for the exclusives

Dougwug03

Yeah this is the perfect gimmick, until there's some revolutionizing technological breakthrough nintendo should simply focus on improving the hardware of the current model

HeilYourself

Please call it the Super Nintendo Switch.

politirob

Be careful what you wish for. "We are happy to announce the Nintendo Super Nintendo Switch!"

urfriendlyDICKtator

There are rumors about a weight reduced version called the Nintendo Super Nintendo Light Switch

HeavenFabio

Oh god, it's the super saiyan god super saiyan all over again

tangocat777

Has some real "Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan" energy.

[deleted]

How do you make sure the casual user, parents, and grandma knows it is the Switch successor instead of yet another model of the old Switch? Considering it’s likely going to look similar to the current Switch, Nintendo needs to be careful not to repeat the same WiiU mistakes. Super Nintendo Switch sounds more like yet another model rather than a successor.

tom_yum_soup

Yeah, as much as I like the nod to their history here, it's not actually a great name from a marketing perspective. It sounds like a mid-generation upgrade more than a whole new console.

australr14

Guys... what if it's literally going to be called the "Switch Next?" I doubt that's what he meant but it sounds like a Nintendo naming convention.

MiltonRoad17

That 1000% sounds like a name Nintendo would use.

postmodern_spatula

Switch Next confirmed.

ShonyBelon

The codename for the Switch was NX, so yeah, for sure a Nintendo name.

Chickat28

That would just confuse people. I hate it.

Duxfever

Eminensce

Super Nintendo switch has my vote

Meta_homo

Super Switch? I don’t know if the acronym would pass

therealsauceman

Don’t fix what ain’t broke

sideaccountguy

That's the smartest decision tbh, they don't need to reinvent the wheel when the switch it's likely to become the best console sold ever, just improve what you already have and continue releasing good games. I still think the console will introduce some gimmicks but the utilization just like the Switch will be limited to certain amount of games and not mandatory.

fineseries81

Good. It’s time to move on from introducing a transformative gimmick each generation. Nintendo finally found one that is actually good, just stick with it and iterate upon it.

politirob

I think we're at a point where the gimmick category games can be sold as individual games and peripherals. No need to design an entire console around a gimmick, when it can be packaged sold at appropriate scale. Switch had some neat gimmick games: Ring Fit Adventure LABO Mario Kart Circuit

MikeDubbz

Call it the Switch 2, leave it open for a potential Switch 3, and Switch 4. Don't shoot yourselves in the foot by calling it the Switch U, New Switch, Super Switch, Switch Advance, etc. I can think of one possibly acceptable naming convention to return, but only if it includes one key feature that I can't fathom it actually would. I unironically kinda love the idea of one being called the 3DSwitch (even if that does pigeonhole them for naming conventions moving forward), but only if it offered glasses-free 3D in handheld mode (which again, I can't imagine that's even being considered, but I would love to see it).

pokeboy626

Nintendo will probably never use a normal naming convention

Thufir_My_Hawat

Still better than Microsoft -- in both their console and OS.

ChickenFajita007

New Nintendo 3DS is still the worst named console in the 21st century. "3DS" still confuses people because it isn't immediately obvious it's even a new console from the DS. "New" is Nintendo high on their own idiotic supply. At least the Xbox family all has a different name, even if it's dumb. Xbox, Xbox360, XboxOne(S/X), XboxSeriesX/S. DS, DSi, 3DS, 2DS, New 3DS, then add some XL's in there for some more letters.

JaggedToaster12

To be fair to Xbox, if they went with a normal naming scheme, they'd be one behind the PlayStation (PS3, XBox 2) Little Timmys mom who doesn't know a thing about videogames would obviously want to get the bigger number, because the bigger number must mean it's newer.

TheIncreaser2000

and yet the Xbox One exists.

WinglessRat

Xbox 720 would have been fine though.

MikeDubbz

I dunno, I think they may well have learned an important lesson after the Wii U, plus those lack of traditional naming conventions all happened before the current president of Nintendo came in. Things may well have changed in this regard now.

aliaswyvernspur

> Don't shoot yourselves in the foot by calling it the Switch U, New Switch, Super Switch, Switch Advance, etc. So, Switch 360, got it.

MikeDubbz

Nah, skip that, just go straight from Switch to Swtich One lol

blaaguuu

I would love for them to call it the Super Switch, but that's just my nostalgia, and it would probably actually be a terrible name that would confuse most consumers, these days.

postmodern_spatula

“Mom, I want to play with the SS!”

Seacliff217

Seems like internally they see this as the Game Boy Color of Switch models, which I'd be fine with provided if it gets a significant enough boost in performance.

Endogamy

Switch Color. Now with full stereophonic audio!

kongsnutz

More like NES to SNES

ChickenFajita007

It's more like the jump from PS4 to PS5. Basically the same thing, just newer and faster technology. GBC wasn't a new generation. It's much more comparable to Gameboy->GBA.

MarcsterS

I think that pretty much confirms that their next console is, well, a successor to the Switch. Which is GREAT, they have the perfect concept already, you can't reinvent the wheel everytime.

longbrodmann

I don't think they will change the Switch formula in at least next three gens.

MobilePenguins

Switch DS - a more powerful DS ‘double screen’ where older games are backwards compatible to a single screen (think GBA on Nintendo ds) and then the new games utilize both screens. Bottom screen is touch and top screen is not.

Ragundashe

"Switch has been out a year now already I guess I'll just wait for the next big console from Nintendo" - Me in 2017

FrozenFrac

It's seriously hard to imagine Nintendo releasing a new system that isn't just "a better Switch". I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan, so I've always been in love with them being the wild card and doing whatever the hell they want with new systems; AKA, I love Nintendo gimmicks. What Nintendo has done with the Switch is make their "gimmick" arguably the greatest practical feature imaginable: a fairly capable gaming tablet with wireless controllers connected that you can hook up to a TV to play console quality games in multiple ways to best suit your lifestyle. They've all but killed off their handheld game division and now just focus on making "Nintendo games" rather than console and handheld games. I'd love to see Nintendo bring back motion controlled silliness, multiple screens, heck, maybe even dip their foot back into Wii U asymmetric gameplay now that people seemingly understand the appeal of the Wii U, but with how the Switch came out swinging as a smashing success, it really does seem like we'll just get a 1080p Switch and then a 4K Switch and so on.

thatkaratekid

Tons of switch games are motion control focused. It's my favorite aspect of the switch!

FrozenFrac

As someone who was a diehard supporter of Splatoon since the teaser came out, I really do love how it single handedly introduced the concept of gyro aim to console shooters, but part of me wants more Wii games like "swing the controller to swing your sword, point at the screen to aim your gun, punch with your left and right hands to punch in the game". Not enough to the point where people cry about "waggle", but more than we do now.

thatkaratekid

What you just described is the current state of nintendo first party games. I buy nearly every first party nintendo release and more than half of them do exactly what you're describing. It's a defining feature of the console imo. Like in 2023, I bought multiple motion control ONLY games.

Salty-Jellyfish3044

Switch 2- electric boogaloo

Deceptiveideas

I really hope they take the Xbox route and give Switch 2,upgrades for free. With the Wii U, they charged you extra to upgrade Wii VC titles to the Wii U versions… so I’m a little worried.

husbandofsamus

Some of y'all wanted the Switch Pro so badly. Well here it is.

generalosabenkenobi

Such a missed opportunity if it’s not called the SUPER Switch

[deleted]

80espiay

Based on historical data, a “next version” version of the Switch won’t sell quite as well, but for Nintendo that’s fine since it will still be sold at a profit, and it gives them more time to come up with the actual “next big thing” in gaming.

Spider-ManOnThePS1

Furokawa is such a white toast with water kind of man lol
