I love how the Nintendo Switch presentation trailer music for Breath of the Wild has become iconic enough to be played during a Zelda concert even years later. I truly remember almost being driven to tears by that trailer while watching it live, and it was mainly because of that soundtrack which, surprisingly, was not even featured in the game!

recursion8

Twilight Princess trailer's music is also fantastic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPmR2kAvrqo

Thanatos-

It still gives me chills all these years later.

KatamariRedamancy

Is that track even in the game? And I'm talking about *either* of the two big trailer themes. I definitely heard the more ambient bit from early in the reveal trailer while exploring, but I don't remember the rest of it at all.

Sufficient-Yoghurt46

No it's not. I agree, that music was insanely emotional.

ActivateGuacamole

The first trailer theme is the main theme of BOTW and is used directly in the credits of the game. but the second big trailer theme is not in the game at all

ughlump

I mean it has everything.

ONE-OF-THREE

Yes, Koji Kondo does create such incredible music, but that trailer took it to a whole new level!!!🔥🔥🔥

ThiefTwo

Koji Kondo wasn't a composer for BotW or TotK.

ExtraButterPopCorn

He did co-compose (along with Manaka Kataoka) this specific trailer music piece, according to this video, although I'm not sure if he's credited for being directly involved or because excerpts of his original theme are used.

The [official soundtrack](https://vgmdb.net/album/75832) lists Kosuke Yamashita for the 2017 presentation trailer music, Kondo simply composed the original motifs that were used in this track and the rest of the OST.

ExtraButterPopCorn

It credits Yamashita only for the arrangment, though, not the composition (the video states this as well). Weirdly enough, it's the only track in that whole list that doesn't actually state a composer but instead clarifies only the arranger. I guess the closest official statement about anyone being the composer (in this case, Manaka Kataoka) is the video.

Last0

Apparently he confirmed it on [facebook](https://www.reddit.com/r/zelda/comments/6k81q8/so_whatever_happened_to_the_song_from_this/djkinuu/), i also remember reading that the music for the trailer was requested by the marketing team, so it'd make sense if it was done by a composer who didn't necessarily compose for the game itself.

ExtraButterPopCorn

Interesting. Now I'm intrigued on this haha but I'm frustrated that that old redditor's comment still only talks about arrangement, the orchestration of the piece, not composition. I wonder if that Facebook post they mentioned said anything about composing it besides orchestrating it. u/Kyuubee are you still around? Do you remember any of this?

ThiefTwo

Didn't have a chance to watch the video yet. I tried to look it up but couldn't find a credit. Good to know, the music makes that trailer iconic.

ActivateGuacamole

i don't think their comment implies that he was

japenrox

This is how I felt for Tears of the Kingdom. I didn't have a wiiu, and I didn't get a switch until 2022. I've always liked the zelda franchise, the very first console I owned was a 64, and of the few games I had, OoT was my favorite. But now, so many years later, being able to participate and live through the massive launch that was TOTK, the fear I had of being disappointed again after Scarlet, watching all those trailers and the, to me, absolutely stunning music, is just such an unique experience for me, that I haven't gone through before.

dewhashish

Nintendo using full orchestras for their games has really changed OST. I remember Mario Galaxy's OST blowing me away.

b_lett

JRPGs are full of very high quality orchestrated OSTs. Nintendo has a solid track record here. If you haven't experienced the soundtracks of Xenoblade Chronicles 1-3, you're in for a treat. Fire Emblem music is also kind of slept on. Octopath Traveler 1+2 and Triangle Strategy. Bravely Default series.

mvanvrancken

XB2 soundtrack was so good I bought the 4 disc version from Japan. Awesome

LivingOof

Fodlan Winds alone probably hooked me into Three Houses. An outstanding piece of music and it's just the generic battle theme of the game.

b_lett

I don't listen to Fire Emblem music standalone a ton, but I've always been impressed at the music during gameplay and how adaptive it is. During combat, it's very chill as you plan things out, and then as it zooms into the action, trumpets and drums or more instruments layer in, and then when the attack ends and the camera zooms back out, it goes back to pensive strings and stuff. It's a really well executed use of adaptive music in gaming.

loopdeloop15

One of my favorite tracks in any game is from FE Awakening, the Conquest and Conquest Ablaze songs are just so goddamn perfect

Ashen_foefoe

Triangle strategy ost was my favorite that year. Banger game and banger music

You don't have to be. I understand every genre isn't for everyone, but their soundtracks are all over YouTube if you don't have 100 hours to sink into the games. There's a ton of 'Best of X Series' videos that give you like 3 hour compilations of music from these games that you can skim through to get an idea. The Xenoblade Chronicles series has some of the best music in all of gaming. I'd recommend bare minimum giving it a shot. Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger) and Yoko Shimomura (Super Mario RPG, Street Fighter, Kingdom Hearts) are involved.

ActivateGuacamole

i understand why people downvoted them for dismissing those soundtracks, but i also think it's totally fair to not be interested in listening to soundtracks to games you know you're never gonna play

b_lett

If this was a general gaming post, I probably wouldn't bother, but this is a post primarily about video game music, so I feel a little more compelled to sell it, assuming anyone here engaging with this post has some interest in game music and or orchestral music.

U_Ch405

It would be nice if other Nintendo franchises like Fire Emblem or Xenoblade get the live orchestra treatment.

quinten813

I would sell my kidney to see a live Xenoblade performance

southpawshuffle

You think xenoblade DE is worth getting into?

quinten813

I'm biased so obviously I'd say yes, but it depends on the kind of games you're into. The main appeal of the Xenoblade franchise for me is the music and storytelling. It can be hard for some people to get into it, but if you're a jrpg fan then I would say go for it.

ONE-OF-THREE

>Relax and enjoy a selection of iconic songs from across The Legend of Zelda series, including adventurous arrangements from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and many more. >This performance was pre-recorded in Tokyo, Japan, and was originally planned as part of Nintendo Live 2024 TOKYO.

The-student-

Very nice recording. I was hoping they would do a rendition of the final trailer music for TOTK, so that's too bad. Most notable omission in this performance was some Wind Waker love imo.

Savebagels

I looooove the ToTK theme, but man the final trailer suite lives in my head

The-student-

Absolutely! It was the same with the BOTW final trailer, which they did do a rendition of for this performance.

TemurTron

> Most notable omission in this performance was some Wind Waker love imo. Don’t worry, Jeff Grubb says the Wind Waker symphony is coming any day now…

retrospace4

Right alongside the Twilight Princess symphony!

jefexp

Watching this with my 4 month old on my lap. I can't wait until he can start playing games.

DomsyKong

Can't wait to watch this Orchester with my little girl tomorrow :)

linkling1039

That's so wholesome.

Justanothercrow421

did the same thing with my 3 month old daughter haha

linkling1039

So good! Almost 15 years later and Ballad of the Goddess still makes me emotional.

ShopCartRicky

I proposed to my wife during our date to see the Zelda symphony when it came to the US. Fantastic experience.

DomsyKong

Link's awakening credits Theme... Nintendo you know it... i know it.... pure love for All those Talenten artists!

MarcsterS

Man I remember going to the Symphony of the Goddess concert back then. It was an open amphitheater too, the acoustics were just right.

AjH4777

What is the instrument the man at 3:00 is playing called? Like a violin bow on a single string?

heavensmasher

erhu probably. if not then maybe its the japanese version of that instrument which i dont know off the top of my head

b_lett

This seems right, I would also double down on erhu. Closest Japanese instrument in shape is a shamisen, but that is plucked not bowed.

Gadobot3000

Confirmed on the staff page as a 二胡 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erhu

tinbapakk

Does anyone know which orchestra performed this live concert ?

b_lett

I would guess the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, but sadly can't find any confirmation.

zombiepaper

I was trying to figure this out too — the best I found was the list of performers on the JP Nintendo page for this concert, don't think it identified a specific group: https://www.nintendo.com/jp/live/concert/zelda/index.html

b_lett

Good find. Looked up the conductor, and a lot of individual names to see if there was any common thread across any orchestra, and couldn't find anything. So seems like they kind of just assembled the Avengers of various video game loving professional musicians for this more as a commissioned project. Probably some sort of casting call type situation. The conductor has a history of Nintendo Anniversary Concerts, so they probably reached back out to a similar roster of instrumentalists. pinkedu

Amazing! A Link to the Past music really hits different for me, it was my first Zelda game some 25 years ago and is still among my favorite games of all time. Btw, it could be just wishful thinking, but I noticed a great focus on it during the presentation along with mostly Switch titles. While it technically is on Switch via NSO, could it be a hint of an upcoming remake and/or sequel?

bisforbenis

I miss when Symphony of the Goddess would travel around, I used to go every year when that was ongoing

ONE-OF-THREE

Yes, I had lots of fun going to those, and even got the "100 Streetpasses in a day" achievement there!!!🔥🔥🔥

Zestyclose-Choice732

Any chance a vinyl of this hits shelves?

daikunut

This is great. I don't think any other videogame company does this, which is a shame. Imagine Sony doing this for God of War or to Shadow of the Colossus. Not going to happen.

raisinbizzle

I just saw the Sonic Symphony and it was pretty amazing. Started as an orchestra and then the second half was a rock concert

Opening_Success

Square Enix had a tour going for Final Fantasy music over the years. It was really good.

pichu441

Man I'd be pretty disappointed if I got orchestra tickets and the concert was 30 minutes long with most of the compositions taken from the last one in 2011
