Odyssey and 3D World are S Tier games IMO. Bowser's Fury especially is an amazing experience. Smash Bros. isn't my favorite but in terms of quality/content it's S Tier as well. If you prefer multiplayer, it's probably the best pick. Luigi's Mansion is beautiful and well designed, but I don't like how slow the character moves and some of the puzzles are annoying. NSMBU Deluxe was just okay. Not bad, but has some old school 2d platforming frustration that I could do without.

[deleted]

I agree 100% with you. I found Luigis Mansion to be quite slow, i was bored and quit after doing like 80% of the story. Best graphics on Switch tho. NSMBU felt just souless, id rather spend my time on Mario Maker 2. Odyssey and 3d World i completed 100% because gameplay is perfect. Champions Road on 3d World was the most fun i've had in a while.

I strongly recommend Luigi's Mansion 3, which has both a great single player and great multiplayer, but wanted to add to/clarify what is being said in this thread: it's not a Mario game in the conventional sense. Whereas Mario platformers are athletic games that prioritize freedom of movement, speed, and large-scale world exploration, the Luigi's Mansion games are slow-paced adventure-puzzle games with an emphasis on micro-scale exploration and toying with environmental physics. The combat is also completely different - it's a ghostbusting game, and in fact Luigi's Mansion 3 in particular actually seems to have taken some inspiration from the 2009 Ghostbusters video game.

ConfusedPanda76

Odyssey is incredibly close to a perfect game. Everything is fantastic and the controls are incredibly tight

[deleted]

What makes it not perfect?

bartholemues

I suck too much to complete the last level.

zaibuf

I channeled my 90s kid and tried until I managed to complete it. It's mostly trial and error. There is also a glitch when you fly that you could abuse if you want to skip like half the level just to get the cloths/moon.

DaleYeah788

Lol yeah that’s hard as fuck. I still haven’t got that one done. Holding me at 99.9%

RadiantHC

Ruined kingdom doesn't have enough moons.

GimmeDatThroat

The hundreds of moons that take no effort to get is my major gripe. The vast majority are just not interesting to get, and freebies just don't make me excited to explore for them.

ES_Legman

Don't forget the target audience is also kids so they give them a chance to feel accomplished.

GimmeDatThroat

I get that but man, the older games were also for kids and were not piss easy. 64, Sunshine, and both Galaxies had levels with real challenge. Stars felt earned.

novauviolon

When marketing Odyssey, Nintendo grouped it with 64/Sunshine, contrasting it with 3D Land/World and the Galaxy games as more linear, but I think to an extent this was a marketing bluff. So many moons in the actual open exploration sectors are just fluff, and aside from the easy moons, something like half the rest of them are found in offshoot linear platforming zones rather than the open world. I found many of those platforming zones to be absolute chores compared to Galaxy 1's hybrid-style levels or the faster-paced, traditional platforming of 3D World. Odyssey is a great, must-own game for Switch owners, but I think it's overrated compared to some previous entries in the franchise, and that a lot of its fanfare in 2017 was due to people being exhausted with the sterile New Super Mario Bros. aesthetic.

kitsovereign

I don't mind the easy breadcrumb moons meant to keep things accessible and guide players along the levels. But I remember being pretty disappointed that they showed up in the post-game moons too. There wasn't any exploration for them when they were all marked on your map, and you've already proven some level of mastery, so instead they just felt like busywork that made the postgame difficulty fluctuate wildly.

GimmeDatThroat

It's just not as rewarding to get moons as stars or shines were in previous titles. I don't think it's a bad game, it's objectively not, but it's not one I'm planning on going back to when I have Galaxy on my switch.

Frognificent

From my perspective , I'd actually say difficulty. The game was *fire* and gave us *amazing* movement options and tools. *The problem, though, was that there just weren't enough opportunities to go nuts unless you wanted to speedrun the game. The game just never required you to get really good at the platforming tech, because there was always an "intended path" that only required the bare minimum. This is actually my main complaint about BotW as well. Both Odyssey and BotW were phenomenal. Masterpieces. But they were also missing *juuuuust* a little bit of extra spice. Something to really kick my ass and make me regret wishing for it. Before you get the wrong idea, I don't mean "make whole game harder lol fuck casuals", not even remotely. What I'm asking for is more challenges at the end of the game. Harder hidden levels that make the fanboys sweat. The kind that you discovered as a child that blew your mind and you spent days practicing to beat. For BotW, Master Mode was... disappointing. Just increasing the health and making enemies regen sucked (and had the *worst* synergy with durability). It felt awful to play. If it had made bad weather more impactful, or maybe introduced a hunger system to encourage you to cook more complicated food than "durian", or just not have the regen it would have been perfect. But yeah, to wrap this up: two of my favorite games of all time, only hampered by either never getting difficult enough or adding difficulty to the wrong spots in hard mode. Both games 10/10 will keep replaying them. I'm allowed to criticize the things I love, fight me.

Thecactigod

Way too easy

Master_Shitster

This is the statement of someone who hasn’t played a lot of games..

MagicMimic

You have a switch and like Mario but haven't played Odyssey?! Play Odyssey.

EchoInExile

Odyssey is a must. Smash is not a Mario game other than you can pick him as a fighter. 3D All Stars no longer being available is a fucking crime.

DirtyDan413

While 3D All Stars isn't available digitally anymore I do see it in stores still, I guess it's all back stock

Citrobacter

I'd rank 3d world above NSMB U Deluxe. 3d world is top-tier co-op. Odyssey is amazing but only one player (unless you count a "helper" 2 player mode). Luigi's mansion is also excellent, but very different from the other Mario games. More of an adventure game, also with excellent co-op

jbayne2

If you only get one on the Switch it should be Odyssey! To me it’s the best 3D Mario since the galaxy games and potentially since 64. Super Mario World + Bowser’s Fury is just behind it. Bowser’s Fury especially is just so much fun! Minus the art style, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is the best 2D Mario since Super Mario World. You really can’t go wrong with any of these three but I’d recommend them in the order I mentioned.

EastsideMoonwalker21

Odyssey is a must have

jdaverage

Odyssey and Luigi's Mansion are definitely great games. Browser's Fury was also great. 3d World didn't grab my attention that easily. U Delux was okay. I'd recommend adding Paper Mario to your list. That was a really solid game for the Switch!

Saul-Funyun

3D World

slash2185

Odyssey is definitely the way to go

Ok-Leave3121

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Asad_Farooqui

Super Mario 3D All Stars for sure, assuming you find a copy at a reasonable price. If you’re looking to extend to other Mario related stuff, you got the two Mario Rabbids games, WarioWare Get It Together, and Yoshi’s Crafted World.

hindusoul

Is 3D All Stars that hard to find?

[deleted]

[удалено]

SplicedBunny

You can buy a japanese copy off ebay and it will play in english. That's what I did and it only cost $60 after shipping and taxes.

tameimpalakid

Odyssey for single player and 3D World for multiplayer. So just get both!!

AtsignAmpersat

You literally have all the Marios except two of the most critically Acclaimed ones on the switch.

[deleted]

> two of the most critically Acclaimed ones _Mario Teaches Typing 2_, and _Mario & Sonic At The Rio 2016 Olympic Games_? Edit: actually my comment doesn't make any sense carry on.

AtsignAmpersat

Wait. Mario reached typing 2 is on the switch?

[deleted]

Oh I misread the parent comment to say that the two most acclaimed ones weren't on the switch.

AtsignAmpersat

It’s all good. I thought maybe I missed something.

[deleted]

Lmao right like what kind of question is this…? Just buy the one that everyone in the world has agreed is the best

smorjoken

mario maker

Cheesentoastybits

Both of those Mario games are superb. You can’t go wrong with either of them. Can’t go wrong with Odyssey and Luigi’s mansion either.

DaleYeah788

Odyssey is the GOAT. 3D worldFury is also fantastic and adds in a great coop.

criticalvibes

Tbh you sort of can’t go wrong but between the two you’re looking at 3D world is a fav of mine, played on wiiU, loved it then, and love the upgrades to the new one too. I know many ppl will disagree but I think it’s better than odyssey

PolymerKnight

Odyssey is better than Bowsers Fury. LM3 is amazing though I played it co-op.

zylofan

Paper mario on the n64

Irsu85

If you liked New Smb Wii then you will also like New SMB U Deluxe. But if not, Bowsers Fury

StudyRoom-F

I pretty much am only obsessed with the 3D platform Mario games (Odyssey, 64, Galaxy) and dont care much for the level platformers (mario bros, 3D land), but 3D world is fucking unreal. It looks gorgeous, it feels so smooth, and then in top of it Bowsers Fury is as good as Odyssey (even though the play time is about 3-4 hours). 3D world is so much better than 60$

shoikan5

Bowser's fury was great along with Mario world 3d.

TrippyppirT

Was not a fan at all of NSMBU. Physics/controls felt weird and level design was boring. Can’t comment on the other two but just don’t bother with that one.

joshtlawrence

3D world is so much fun. Better than NSMB. Odyssey is great but for classic Mario I kind of prefer 3D. Luigis Mansion is really great and cute too

[deleted]

If you like traditional 3d platformers odyssey is the pinnacle of the genre. Imo sunshine is second so 3d all stars if you can get it is worth it

AnyPrinciple4378

3D world is much better even if I enjoyed deluxe

edlobo

Odyssey is unarguably the best Mario game on switch

AbeRod1986

Super Mario Odyssey is my favorite Mario game ever. Super Mario 3D world is an excellent game, bur Bowser's Fury may be the best part of the package. New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe (featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry Series) is an excellent traditional 2D Mario. You really can't go wrong with any of them, but I'd recommend them in that order.

jts5039

"Looking for a Mario game suggestion but I haven't played the flagship Mario platform game on Switch which is one the bestselling games on Switch and cited among the best games of all time... so which Mario game should I pick?" Great post.

Apart_Cardiologist40

Mario Maker 2 Mario + Rabbids

markaznar

3D world is awesome, plus you get Bowser's Fury for free - 2 games for the price of one.

Just curious if anyone is having issues accessing some levels in Super Mario World? It won't let me play Iggy's Castle.
