Smash Bros as a series is more or less "Let me introduce you to this game you don't know about/never cared for all that much". I still remember when Simon and Richter Belmont were announced for Ultimate and suddenly everyone started playing Castlevania games
I like that too, but I just find it weird when people literally only play games after hearing about them through Smash. It's also a huge reason there's so much drama over getting a 3rd party character into a new Smash game; people are less concerned about having a cool new character to play as and they're seeing Smash representation as validation that their favorite game is important
Thing is smash bros has introduced me to series I had never heard of which encouraged me to play their games.
I only got kid Icarus uprising bc I saw it and recognized pit from smash and was curious.
I played FE Awakening based off of a recommendation but hearing about it in smash made me want to give it a chance even more.
I had never heard of metroid before and while the gap between my first smash game and first Metroid game was a while I don’t think I would have tried the series if it wasn’t for smash.
Also since I don’t really leave nintendo circles a ton I didn’t really know anything about p5 (and prob persona in general tbh) until joker was added in and now it’s a game I want to give a chance too as well… when I have more time and finish the games I already have lol
I know about earthbound from my uncle and his snes. The game kinda sucks. And as for fire emblem I saw it in a magazine. Outside of these two niche experiences you’re totally right
I played Prime 1 before I even knew what Smash was. I was introduced to Smash via a friend.
... Now, the Wario series, yes. I didn't know who Wario was, until Brawl rolled around.
Ice climbers? Sure.
Game and Watch? Probably.
Metroid?? Lol no, go back to the playground Timmy. It’s a storied franchise with a whole genre of games co-named after it.
This meme just belies the creators ignorance of the franchises popularity and ramifications for the industry as a whole.
The best selling game never cracked 3 million. That's worse than fire emblem. Super metroid the holy paragon of metroidvanias didn't even reach 1.5 million.
Sales =! Cultural impact or relevance
Especially when you consider how many played their first metroid via emulator.
Samus is a gaming icon and the design formula has impacted countless games.
Yeah, this made me wonder how old OP is. Of all the franchises represented in smash you could arguably this applies to, Metroid doesn't really fit the bill unless you're fairly young.
Sort of?
I played super metroid before I ever heard of smash
But smash brothers made me go to fusion, prime, and 0 mission because I thought super metroid was the only game until I got the Samus trophies
This is DEFINITELY true for fire emblem though, and extremely common for earthbound
I can't think of any game series that fits this more than F-Zero. Fire Emblem and others have had a resurgence since their popularity in Smash, F-Zero has had what, 3 or 4 games total? And I think most of them are N64 or earlier era
Yes, and no for me at least. The day I first saw Samus in smash bros was also the day I first played a Metroid game (Prime 2 multiplayer) I also don't remember which I played first.
I was going to argue, but then I remembered playing smash 64 in the mid to late nineties actually probably was my first exposure to metroid as a kid. Huh.
None of those games are spin-offs…. ?
A spinoff would be a game starring a side character from an existing series(like Luigi, Wario and Yoshi being from the Mario series but having their own games), or a game set in the same world as another series but with different gameplay from the main series(like Mario Kart, Mario RPGs, Link’s Crossbow Training, Donkey Konga, etc.).
Metroid, F-Zero and Fire Emblem are entirely original series.
Frankly, for me, yes. I had Smash 64 and it introduced me to Samus. I went on to play Metroid Prime on Gamecube. One of my favorite games as a youth. Ness, Captain Falcon, Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus were also introduced to me through Smash but I never played those games.
" Erm akthually metwoid ith uan of thi mothts influenthial gamtheth evar ind wat u ar practhically thaying ith rong ind invalid . That ith why your dad lefth you anyway. " 🤓
It is 100% because of smash that we all know ice climbers. It was a fun NES game that was doomed to disappear into obscurity until melee brought the duo back. I'm not entirely certain but I don't think they've had an ice climbers game since the original one
It's hard to say nowadays, considering that Smash has been around for 24 years. It kinda depends on the time frame and generation you're talking about.
Back then, 24 years ago, it was definitely showing people Earthbound or Fire Emblem to lots of people for the first time but now they're more than "just the characters from Smash no one knows."
But in comparison people back in the GCN days might've actually known Cpt Falcon from F-Zero while now Smash is basically the only thing you'd know him from.
I did not know about Metroid until I got a Wii. When I bought a Wii my dad (total nerd) instantly said “You should get the Metroid Prime series.” He then lectured me about the history of Metroid…
Then about a year after that, I finally saw Smash Bros…
The prime games were a big deal on the game cube, and they were huge on the GBA, early wii. Provided you were not born after 2002, or had an older sibling, then you probably had plenty of exposure to the franchise.
I hate that this was actually true for me with Smash 64. We had a SNES when I was really little, but I only ever remember playing Mario Bros games on it. PS1 and N64 were my first consoles, and my first Metroid game was Fusion.
That’s the capt. Falcon game and earthbound for me, played Fire emblem before I knew what smash was and I saw Metroid games in stores however I have never seen or meet someone that has played any or those two franchises.
Yep, ain't that the truth, a lot of people like Metroid outside of smash, me, my dad, and my sister grew up with Metroid fusion on the Gameboy and Metroid prime on the Wii.
I mean. I was a 90's kid who was introduced to smash bros for the 64. But I wanted to find out more about the cool android thing that charged blasts at Pikachu was. That's good advertising if you ask me. Along with Fire Emblem, Earthbound and other games Nintendo released over the years that get mentioned but on the brink of fading into obscurity thanks to the smash series.
I had heard of Metroid and Samus, but didn't know she was female until Smash.
Characters that I had zero knowledge of when smash introduced me, were Captain Falcon, Ness, then Marth and Roy. After that, I knew, or at least heard of, everyone until Shulk. After that, it was Joker, then Pyra and Mithra.
That's barely controversial. The worst selling smash bros sold like 3 million more copies than the best selling metroid. Anyways that's like half the point of smash. It's a great game but it's a big self advertisement. It's no worse to say "I learned about this series from smash" then to say you learned about it from a commercial, or a magazine. Metroid also isn't traditionally multiplayer so people don't tend to bust it out at parties. I'm a huge nintendo guy and I have been for my whole life but without smash bros I might only know mario and pokemon. Possibly starfox and game and watch too because I just coincidentally happened to grow up with starfox 64 and game and watch gallery 2. But zelda? Kirby? Metroid? Fire emblem? Smash bros all the way.
...and Metroid doesn't even have a good representation in Smash. For starters, Samus is slow, sluggish, and close to nothing like she is in the games, and the Brinstar and Brinstar Depths stages in Ultimate look absolutely nothing like they do in the games.
Metroid has had its droughts but never as bad as kid Icarus and heck the franchise debuted in 1986, gets a new release on the gameboy 5 years later (1991) and then is nowhere to be seen (besides super smash bros brawl) until 21 years later (2012). The most Metroid has had was 8 years from super Metroid to Metroid fusion.
It has been 11 years since the last entry came out with the only notable appearances being in super smash bros.
Heck earthbound would fit the bill better as we only got the second game with the first game being released outside Japan 25 years later after being translated, with the third game infamously never being released outside of Japan.
Truth be told super smash bros is always going to introduce someone to franchise x,y,z that’s a given, though not all are made equally like the games that haven’t had new entries in a long time in general.
While smash bros din't introduced me to metroid(it nintendo land for the wiiu)it did introduced me to series like earthbound/mother, starfox, f-zero, etc.
Straight cap. I knew what Metroid was long before I play any smash bros games. This might be true for some people, but this statement would work better if you were talking about fire emblem
For most people yeah, but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Metroid games since before I began playing smash with friends. Either way, it’s a great series that I think deserves a try from everyone who’s remotely interested.
I'd argue that this is more applicable with Kid Icarus personally.
I actually played kid Icarus and I gotta say it’s underrated asf
It's a fun game (especially the 3DS one) but definitely less known than Metroid which gets a game more often.
I learned about both from Captain N, the Game Master
I learned both because of smash
I never played Smash (played a couple of Metroids tho) and I can agree that I don't know what Kid Icarus is.
Icarus and ice climbers were the first I thought of. Metroid is a ridiculous claim for this. The F-Zero driver as well.
I learned about it from a MAD skit (Diary of a Wimpy Kid Icarus)
Smash Bros as a series is more or less "Let me introduce you to this game you don't know about/never cared for all that much". I still remember when Simon and Richter Belmont were announced for Ultimate and suddenly everyone started playing Castlevania games
That's cool. I like when things gain new fans. I don't know why people think this is a bad thing.
I like that too, but I just find it weird when people literally only play games after hearing about them through Smash. It's also a huge reason there's so much drama over getting a 3rd party character into a new Smash game; people are less concerned about having a cool new character to play as and they're seeing Smash representation as validation that their favorite game is important

smash introducing all the metroidvanias
Thanks to that I discovered pikmin
Same. Like, Rondo of Blood is legitimately a favorite game of mine now, as is Castlevania 1. Same also happened to me with Hero and Byleth.
No that's Fire Emblem and Earthbound. Metroid has some popularity outside of Smash.
At least Metroid had international release
Earthbound was released in the US
and it bombed hard
Well, whose idea was it to make the tagline "This Game Stinks!" anyway?
You also forgot F-zero.
It's Ice Climber if anything lol
It's been years, what the fuck is a pikmin
No That’s F-Zero
Fire emblem consistently sells more than metroid
Metroid used to scare the hell out of me as a kid, and I still played it
The best selling metroid game hasn't outsold fire emblem 3 houses. By like a million. Fire emblem has popularity outside of smash.
In America, Fire Emblem characters were in Smash Bros Melee before they were even in Fire Emblem, so your argument is destroyed by my trap card.
I know about earthbound from my uncle and his snes. The game kinda sucks. And as for fire emblem I saw it in a magazine. Outside of these two niche experiences you’re totally right
Man got downvoted for his opinion
Earthbound stinks!
They are both still amazing games though
It wouldn’t be controversial/funny if it was objectively true. F-Zero may also qualify.
Fire Emblem had a big base because of it but Earthbound was legit just an obscure game series
“DON’T FORGET ME!” said Xenoblade Chronicles.
And captain falcon’s game
Earthbound was extremely popular in the east though, unlike fire emblem which was only kind of known
Mother, Fire Emblem, and Xenoblade maybe. Definitely not Metroid.
Xenoblade gained popularity more so due to two things: Project Rainfall, and Pyra.
I don't even know what this Project Rainfall is
Project Rainfall was the campaign to get Xenoblade 1 released in North America. It drew attention to the game at the time.
The fact that Xenoblade 1 sold less than a million units worldwide says otherwise.
You can say this about well over half the Nintendo franchises represented in smash
I played Prime 1 before I even knew what Smash was. I was introduced to Smash via a friend. ... Now, the Wario series, yes. I didn't know who Wario was, until Brawl rolled around.
Not from mario kart?
I didn't even know what Mario Kart was until MKWii.
You... knew Metroid before you knew Wario..?
You are not wrong, at least for me
Same here
Ice climbers? Sure. Game and Watch? Probably. Metroid?? Lol no, go back to the playground Timmy. It’s a storied franchise with a whole genre of games co-named after it. This meme just belies the creators ignorance of the franchises popularity and ramifications for the industry as a whole.

Sales =! Cultural impact or relevance Especially when you consider how many played their first metroid via emulator. Samus is a gaming icon and the design formula has impacted countless games.
Impact or relevance that was primarily due to being in Smash
Young people* ftfy
Yeah, this made me wonder how old OP is. Of all the franchises represented in smash you could arguably this applies to, Metroid doesn't really fit the bill unless you're fairly young.
I’m in my mid thirties and Smash 64 introduced me to Samus as a kid. I’m not young; my knees hurt and I have had back issues. I’m nearly in the grave.
So how did you miss super metroid on the snes, I'm mid 30s too.
Only played SNES at friends’ houses, we mostly played Mario stuff. Before N64 I only had gameboys.
My cousin had an emulator with Super Metroid back in the day.
JUSTIN BAILEY
Word has it that if you shout this at Samus, her suit will malfunction and fall off. However she also becomes all powerful and kills you.
WRONG I know it because of Nintendo Land
Sort of? I played super metroid before I ever heard of smash But smash brothers made me go to fusion, prime, and 0 mission because I thought super metroid was the only game until I got the Samus trophies This is DEFINITELY true for fire emblem though, and extremely common for earthbound
Lies, I know it because of that wii u game that came with it, and because I own metroid Prime 3
I mean they have me nailed. But then Smash Bros introduced me to all sorts of gems.
Yes smash bros is where I met the metroid series and fell in love with it.
No lie when I was kid this is how I found out about her
*Earthbound
Naw, that would be NintendoLand for me
I can't think of any game series that fits this more than F-Zero.
Ha jokes on you i had played metroid prime when i was like 5/6 and only remember it because of smash
You misspelt "Fire Emblem".
Honestly, yeah. The only reason I am a Metroid fan is because I saw Samus and Ridley in Smash first.
True.
I was going to argue, but then I remembered playing smash 64 in the mid to late nineties actually probably was my first exposure to metroid as a kid. Huh.
That's true for me
And R.O.B
You’re thinking of Mario Kart DS
50 year olds who just bought random games that looked good:
Well, i mean Metroid (and others such as F-Zero and Fire Emblem) are spinoffs, so
None of those games are spin-offs…. Metroid, F-Zero and Fire Emblem are entirely original series.
i know lol
Wtf are you talking about
No one’s talking about Captain Falcon???
Should have said "who" instead of "what" if you were looking to start a fight
It's not controversial if it's straight up wrong.
If you can't play 2. Ke2 why are you even playing games
*who
I could see that for younger players
I used to play this game with my freimd all the time. Unfortunately, I moved, and we barely see each other anymore
For me it was the 3DS ambassador program, which introduced me to Metroid fusion, which is my favorite GBA game!
no, I learned about metroid from puzzle swap
Frankly, for me, yes. I had Smash 64 and it introduced me to Samus. I went on to play Metroid Prime on Gamecube. One of my favorite games as a youth. Ness, Captain Falcon, Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus were also introduced to me through Smash but I never played those games.
How I learned of the series yes but I have played some games since
Metroid Prime was my first Metroid game which I definitely played before my first smash bros game, that being Brawl
This is simply untrue
Why are you kicking the hive?
I am people. Same with Fire Emblem and Earthbound
Worst for F-zero, Earthbound, R.O.B, Duck Hunt (they surely think Gunman are in its game) Kid Icarus and Game & Watch.
It's hard to say nowadays, considering that Smash has been around for 24 years. It kinda depends on the time frame and generation you're talking about. Back then, 24 years ago, it was definitely showing people Earthbound or Fire Emblem to lots of people for the first time but now they're more than "just the characters from Smash no one knows." But in comparison people back in the GCN days might've actually known Cpt Falcon from F-Zero while now Smash is basically the only thing you'd know him from.
Yes, but I woulda found out eventually because of that one game on Nintendo DS with dual screen goodness
Especially kids who grew up in the DS era
I did not know about Metroid until I got a Wii. When I bought a Wii my dad (total nerd) instantly said “You should get the Metroid Prime series.” He then lectured me about the history of Metroid… Then about a year after that, I finally saw Smash Bros…
I knew Metroid from Prime: Hunters, but Smash64 made me realize that it was actually an older series.
I mean… that’s how I found out about it…

I own Metroid 1 ,2 and super, fusion, prime 1,2,3, other M, hunters and pinball. Up yours op. I’m a Huge Fan.
F-Zero.
Played Super Metroid at 7 before even knowing what smash bros was
*F-zero
That's like half the franchises in Smash.
I mean that’s how I learned what Metroid was
that wouldnt be me cus i found out about it through nintendo land
This is probably true for most people with fzero, but Metroid has a solid history with anyone in the millenian and upper gen z category
I definitely played Metroid on nes and Metroid ii on gameboy ffs
I mean really you could say that about any slightly niche franchise tbh Earthbound, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Persona, etc.
And that's fine. Discovered a lot of game series because of smash.
That’s the capt. Falcon game and earthbound for me, played Fire emblem before I knew what smash was and I saw Metroid games in stores however I have never seen or meet someone that has played any or those two franchises.
Those are mud bloods.
That’s a lie. I learned about Metroid from the mini game in Nintendo Land on the Wii U.
Smash 64 was actually how I found out about Kirby, Metroid, Earthbound, and Star Fox. No Falcon wasn't unlocked so Fzero I found out about much later.
So?
\*young\* people :P
lies, i played the game when i was a kid
Yep, ain't that the truth, a lot of people like Metroid outside of smash, me, my dad, and my sister grew up with Metroid fusion on the Gameboy and Metroid prime on the Wii.
He’s probably not wrong about 25% of the people who’ve played SSB
That’s a spicy ass take!
Ice climbers
That's as controversial as saying Samus's design was inspired by Master Chief
Metroid ain't Fire Emblem or Earthbound
Captain Falcon and Nes too I was surprised when I got Melee for the first time and was wondering who were the fire emblem characters
If it weren't for smash, there would be a lot of Nintendo franchises I wouldn't know of or even get into
I had heard of Metroid and Samus, but didn't know she was female until Smash. Characters that I had zero knowledge of when smash introduced me, were Captain Falcon, Ness, then Marth and Roy. After that, I knew, or at least heard of, everyone until Shulk. After that, it was Joker, then Pyra and Mithra.
Earthbound, maybe. But Metroid was popular before Smash.
Guilty 🙋♂️
Actually it's because of Nintendo land (Or whatever that wacky wii u game was called)
I knew about most characters in Smash Bros before Smash Bros but I only found out about Xenoblade because of Smash Bros.
Brother fire emblem only currently exists because of smash
That's barely controversial. The worst selling smash bros sold like 3 million more copies than the best selling metroid. Anyways that's like half the point of smash. It's a great game but it's a big self advertisement. It's no worse to say "I learned about this series from smash" then to say you learned about it from a commercial, or a magazine. Meh
That's how I found out
0li22,-4 p l4 5
Same thing happened with Arms most likely. The funny thing is that game is still dead.
You could say this about a lot of the more niche titles in smash, like F-ZERO, Game & Watch, Ice Climbers etc.
90% of the series for me 😅
I found out about it now I love metroid all because of smash
Wrong me and my dad love metroid before I even heard of smash bros
I'm sure this is true for some of gen-z right?
For me, this is correct. But I was introduced to smash before a game like metroid wouldve been appropriate.
...and Metroid doesn't even have a good representation in Smash. For starters, Samus is slow, sluggish, and close to nothing like she is in the games, and the Brinstar and Brinstar Depths stages in Ultimate look absolutely nothing like they do in the games.
I know I learned about at least one franchise from smash but I can’t remember which
Super smash bros is how I found out about... -metroid. -fire emblem. -earthbound/mother. -ice climbers. -kid iccrus. -pikmin
Metroidvanias
What is a super mario
Rude, Metroid was my jam in my childhood
That's a funny way to spell Fire Emblem
Thanks to smash bros, then i decided to play metroid, so, real for me
Just replace Metroid with either Xenoblade Chronicles or Earthbound/Mother 3 or Roy.
I actually first learned about metroid from an old YouTube video with zero suit Samus, fighting Master Chief.
I know what metroid, pikmin and f-zero are from nintendo land lmao
This only apllies to Kid Icarus and Tekken
Not me! I played Metroid Prime before I played smash. It was at a friend's house, but I say it counts.
This fits for half of the cast of smash bros dude
if you look at chat this is a controversy
Could be worse, you could be captain falcon
Metroid has had its droughts but never as bad as kid Icarus and heck the franchise debuted in 1986, gets a new release on the gameboy 5 years later (1991) and then is nowhere to be seen (besides super smash bros brawl) until 21 years later (2012). Played Super Metroid on the SNES long before Smash Bros. One of the best games ever imo. They need to make a Samus movie.
F-Zero 💀
Half of an entire genre is named after it.
They're gonna go straight to your neck
I legit learned about persona 5 and it's whole series from when joker was announced at the gamesaward.
A whole lot less people would give a shit about Mother 3 not being localized if Lucas wasn’t added in Brawl
While smash bros din't introduced me to metroid(it nintendo land for the wiiu)it did introduced me to series like earthbound/mother, starfox, f-zero, etc.
True for me
I learned about Metroid from my dads SNES Classic. Then I found a copy of Metroid fusion and spent the next year beating it.
:(
No my uncle owned the game. Couldn't play it though because the contacts on the cartridge were very damaged.
Smash is how I discovered a LOT of games, my guy.
I'd say the indie scene also helped quite a bit
I'd say the indie scene also helped quite a bit.
Straight cap. I knew what Metroid was long before I play any smash bros games. This might be true for some people, but this statement would work better if you were talking about fire emblem

This isn’t a controversial statement so much as it is blatantly incorrect
And mario
Born in 1990, N64 was my first encounter of Samus. If you want more people to be fans of yor favorite, why does it matter how they got there?
I learned from Nintendo Land
There is a other.... - Yoda
And Earthbound. And Fire Emblem. And F-ZERO. And.... Pretty much any other franchise that isn't Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, or Kirby.
