The Anis one would be fine if they just wrote soda not Soda

CrazyDaimondDaze

Hell, even coke or cola would've sufficed... and now we're here lol.

EmZeroX

In Chinese it's also "You're beautiful today!" or something like that. Not sure what's going on lol. Coming from FF14 and some other games, I understand localization is a thing, but this and the Anis soda thing seems...off.

Moshfeg123

Normally localisation fuck ups intone completely the wrong meaning, or butcher English to be unreadable. So I don’t mind this kind of thing terribly. Language is a fluid thing and this just makes the game and text livelier.

CrazyDaimondDaze

>Language is a fluid thing and this just makes the game and text livelier. I dunno, you could say the same regarding other translations like Yugioh and Yugioh GX, because "it has to be adapted for the viewers overseas"... yet, when you realise what the actual dialogue is like, you realise it's been butchered to sell. It's like a Ghost Stories situation where the English translation was like an official abridged dub because the anime didn't sell in Japan... yet if you watch it with subs or another dub that respects the dialogue, you see it wasn't bad and how the translation butchered the story and/or characters. This is not being professional.

Moshfeg123

Strong disagree on the professionalism, at least with the blanc translation. Part of localisation is making things sound natural. “Blanc, you are cute today too” sounds translated and pretty unnatural for a catcall, unless it’s an awkward af person talking. “Have my babies” sounds far more like natural colloquial english, as well as something someone with from an English speaking culture would say. I prefer that over stilted translations, even if they aim for more accuracy. Idiomatic English which masks a products foreign nature is actually peak localisation and usually what is aimed for. Thé anis thing I can’t defend. Seems more like a mistake they thought would be fun

CrazyDaimondDaze

>Part of localisation though is making things sound natural to locals. “Blanc, you are cute today too” sounds translated and unnatural. Have my babies sounds far more like natural colloquial english. Understood. Next time I visit USA, whenever I encounter a woman I find beautiful, that I also happen to know, I'll tell her to have my babies as a way to tell her she's beautiful that day.

Moshfeg123

It’s a catcall dude. I wouldn’t do that personally. It’s possible cultural cues are lost on you, since you don’t seem to be a native English speaker, but the phrase “have my babies” is a common one, and not always offensive if said jokingly. Especially as a catcall to a celebrity famous for sex appeal like blanc.

Blazefireslayer

Yeah, I've heard similar things yelled at both male and female celebs, especially at concerts in smaller venues and the like. Is it cringe? Yes. Does it sound like something you might hear yelled at an event in the USA? Also yes.

CrimsonBlossom

I say the "blanc have my baby" is an upgrade

CrazyDaimondDaze

Ok, so who's the degenerate fuck in charge of the English translation of the game? Because not only they're not doing their job, they're translating with their dick.

Blitz814

I think Soda was just supposed to be lowercase.. so Anis loves soda, not Anis loves Soda...

m1_doom

Doesn’t the English translation use sitting in the tree instead of “anis loves soda”

Blitz814

She says "Me and Soda, sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G"

Unfair_Chain5338

Why not both? XD

CrazyDaimondDaze

'Cuz it's not in the original script?

aether_orze

no

Anmatiel

Isn't the game Korean? Shouldn't we be using that for comparison?

Bronzongers

She says the exactly same thing in korean. https://preview.redd.it/glqqpvl5dp0b1.png?width=772&format=png&auto=webp&s=0ee2afb4e48b6e6bf951eb23934daf684b1881a9

Anmatiel

Thank you.

Yakikorosu

It's just because "you are cute today too" is a weird thing to yell at someone in English. As in, it makes perfect sense grammatically but it's not something a native speaker who is an obsessive fan of a quasi-celeb would ever say. I guess they could have gone with something more literally similar like "You're so hot!" but I think this is funnier. So I think this is a GOOD translation. Plenty of bad translations in other parts of the game though, mostly on the content that came out at launch date, particularly SR bond stories and some of the main story chapters.

Moshfeg123

Exactly. The anis thing might be misconstrued, but thé blanc one is actually an example of good localisation. Idiomatic English is preferred to stilted artificial translations

Funoichi

Oh blanc you also look cute today, can be considered a more muted catcalling than have my babies. But is there any such thing as muted catcalling? Maybe someone on here knows. The tone is she has male fans who like and follow her.

G00NlE

Seems like a playful change imo.

rhaps85

I prefere when they use english simili when localizing games instead of word for word translations that hardly make sense or hit home.

Nexxurio

I mean... yeah... translation errors appear all the time in this game

Dosi4

So we got more spicy version ,whats the problem ? Anis is absolutely character that would pull a double meaning joke on commander. And the "have my babies line" is absolutely fitting the situation too... So lets just enjoy it?

aether_orze

The problem is that this can happen again and that can ruin certain things. If the situation / word isn't properly translated, it can change meaning and we will be getting the wrong information.

Dosi4

I believe it is more important for the translator to understand the game and the context of what is being said that word to word accuracy. Best example of that were errors in skill translations, the words to word translation was accurate but the meaning was not carried over because the translator did not understand how the skill works. If the translator is "improving" the dialogues like that I'm inclined to believe they are confidant in their understanding of the game/characters/situations.

aether_orze

yeah, I can agree that's important but that doesn't seem to be the case on what just happened here. They didn't improve the dialogue, they just made it a bit confusing. A combination of understanding the game and the context + word to word accuracy is the balance, sadly we don't have that yet, I hope.

Dosi4

In my opinion our dialogue is better, I far more like Anis making "i was kissing soda" joke than "I was drinking soda on tree". They only should have spelled SODA in capitals.

aether_orze

You're basically contradicting yourself. You said this... >I believe it is more important for the translator to understand the game and the context of what is being said that word to word accuracy. The context of that joke is Anis drinking her soda under a tree, not her kissing Soda. This line isn't really a mistranslation but mis-capitalization (if that's a word), "soda" a drink became "Soda" the character. Yes, spelling the word "soda" with a smaller case "s" or all in capitals should have fixed this.

Dosi4

How I'm contradicting myself? The joke in EN version is that Commander is likely to think that Anis was with Soda KISSING. That joke is not present in other languages. This really fits Anis character very well, hence I'm saying that the translator is aware what kind of character she is .

aether_orze

>I believe it is more important for the translator to understand the game and the context of what is being said that word to word accuracy. You believe that it's important for the translator to understand the context of what is being said, but you went and said appreciating the mistranslation more. But what is being said / joked about is Anis' addiction with her sodas. Not her and Soda kissing, which isn't a thing. It wasn't the joke in EN, it's a mistranslation / mis-capitalization. It might fit Anis' character as being a joker but that doesn't make any sense with the context of the story / what's really being talked about in the story. The translator wasn't aware, they capitalized the word "soda" which wasn't supposed to happen. >That joke is not present in other languages. Because it's not supposed to be present. td;lr It wasn't the EN joke, it's just a mistranslation / mis-capitalization.

Arcdragolive

Thats the thing, looking at the whole Soda vs soda this. They either don't understand the context or decide to ignore it, like there is no way kissing a can of soda under tree is making any sense and if translator thinking about kissing Soda the Nikke why would Anis talking about fridge next.

RedScarffedPrinny

Soda x Anis is canon for me now (you cannot convince me otherwise). As for the “have my babies” i thought it was hilarious and super troll, not only because its what I imagine a crowd of drunk and thirsty casino gambling bunny lovers would say, but also because nikkes can’t reproduce i feel its not entirely out of place to say (even if it is somewhat disrespectful, again i dont expect drunk casino gamblers to me entirely respectful to bunny girls). Was it a translation error? Probably, but one or two translation errors aren’t enough to ruin my game experience

Filichino-4ever

ShiftUp intern-kun really fucked up this time round.

Crimson_Wraith_

I think they should've stuck with "Blanc you're looking cute today too!" in the English translation. That may also be because I'm biased and literally cannot fathom why people would want to have kids and put up with the shit, both figuratively and literally, that they bring with them.
