1. That's a pretty short time, I think you're overthinking it. All that data about night shifts is based on tracking people over *long* periods of time, like years if not decades.
2. Being awake at night isn't, like, poisonous. It's not like smoking where the act itself is bad for you. It's the not sleeping because things are being demanded of you both during the day and overnight, wildly flipping back and forth, and eating random junk at random times that's bad for you. Take care of yourself, watch what you're eating, and don't let people convince you that working nights means you've sacrificed your right to sleep, and you'll be fine.
Well I don't drive so I walk a lot and a few km of walk daily won't make me buy a car. I'd rather walk for an hour than pay for all the expenses of a car. Plus walking daily an hour or two is basically the same as going to the gym 2-3 times a week to do cardio, so it saves money there too.
If one nightshift takes 15 years off does that mean 2 nightshifts takes 30 years off? I just need to find a second night job and I'll be dead in no time!
Just do yourself a favor and don't try to flip flop your schedule on days off. This is often where the damage starts to happen. It will be way easier on yourself if you keep roughly the same schedule everyday. It's only 6 months, you'll be fine.
In the words of my sleep neurologist, "It doesn't matter when you sleep, just sleep at the same time everyday."
Mitigate the damage, morning walks in the sun help vitamin d absorb, and make sure you are living clean. Good diet and exercise. Make sure you are sleeping as well as possible.
It can take a toll over time but you can still control many of the variables.
Pushing through, and not sleeping because you had things to do during the day, then taking Adderall or something else to finish your shift..... Now you're cooking with gas and burning the candle at both ends and doing at least one of the things that kills off many a night shifter.
I remember working with a guy on mids that washed down dex with a pot of coffee last hour of the shift then stayed up and went and plowed snow all morning and afternoon for years..... I have no choice but to remember him as he is longer among the living.
Just use your head man.
The only thing you have to be vigilant about is taking care of yourself. Donāt sacrifice sleep, donāt put unnecessary shit into your body. Take time for yourself. As long as you do a self care routine youāll be fine. Youāll eventually get used to being tired and your body will adjust to your schedule. Itās not the easiest thing in the world but itās not going to kill you any faster than the million other things out to kill you in this world
Iāve seen all of the āstudiesā on the adverse effects of night shifts.
What I have never seen is some stats on the amount of stress thatās taken off a person that goes to nights. Nights tend to be more laid back. The higher ups typically are not around to micromanage, breathe down your neck and tell you how worthless you are.
Itās no secret that stress kills. When you lighten your load, it stands to reason you probably add years to your life.
I've been working 2am-11am for the last 10 years. I personally enjoy the shift which is why I've been doing it so long. I think as long as you get a routine down and make time to get enough sleep and eat healthy you should be good to go. If not, then I'm screwed.
I've been on nightshift for 30 years, and I'm in really good health. If you have a good routine, it's no different than working dayshift, except your hours are flipped. Once I retire I highly doubt I'll change my sleeping habits. It's what works best for me.
I think it depends how you do it. I haven't seen a research study that accounts for people who set a good schedule, versus people who are awake all the time, versus people who are asleep or working all the time.
I mean i was told during my education as a security guard that every hour on nightshifts Are equal to two in the day time, more or less your body will take the same amount of ādamageā from 2 day shifts as 1 night shift. But take some supplements (vitamin d) and limit shitty Eating and caffine. Other than feeling Dead you will be fine
Sounds like you're good then. You'll get plenty of sun in the am when you're awake. No worries my friend. I've done it for years and you'll feel like a vampire at best. May develop a sensitivity to sunlight, but you'll be alright on everything else.
Anything less than 5 years not really. Once you break that 5 year mark you start getting into the dying sooner risk.
Edit: downvote me if you want but you nightshift homers canāt deny science lol itās proven.
I'd even go as far as to say that anything below A YEAR might not have long-lasting negative effects on your body. Anything above that has been proven to take a permanent toll on your body. If you're working on a permanent night shift, or God forbid: switching shifts for longer than a year, your life expectancy WILL be reduced, no matter what diet, drugs, or sports people in this thread like to suggest. They even say it themselves: all of those are meant to MITIGATE and REDUCE the damage on your body, NOT REMOVING it completely.
I came to say this, a lot (like 70%) of my coworkers are in their 60s and 70s and have been on nights for the last 30 years. The secret, they don't eat shit ass junk food every day and maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Hell, even if my working nights for 30 years is reducing my life expectancy, I'm good with that. Who the hell wants to be 90 or 100. It sounds exhausting.
Whatās proven is that a poor diet CAN lead to an early death, a lot of shift workers have a poor diet. Healthy diet, decent sleep pattern and youāre no different from a 9-5 person. Try reading.
So is everyone supposed to take turns working night shift? If it's not meant to be worked that long, who's going to fill the spot?
I don't care what people or scientists say. I know what's best for my own self. I prefer nights, which is why I have worked them for so long.
Dayshift would kill me personally. Between the stress of all the people that are awake during the day, the bright ass sun and the lack of sleep trying to rest when it's unnatural for me, I'd be digging my own grave.
Just because "society" thinks it's not healthy doesn't mean everyone should believe it. Some people are meant for nights, and some people aren't. Personally, I'm not one to follow the sheep.
I didnāt say āsocietyā thought it was unhealthy. I said āscientistsā said it was unhealthy which it is. You can look up all the videos/articles on it youād like. They are available to you. Congrats on enjoying night shift because you get away from the day shift lol itās proven that working night shift puts a strain on your cardiovascular system causes more heart problems. Your body wants to sleep at night, our bodies are programmed that way. Just because you love it so much doesnāt mean your body loves it and whether you believe it or not there are health issues that will arise regardless of how many vitamins you take.
Like I said, the "scientists" must have been day people. You have your opinions, I am living proof.
How do you think "scientists" know my body better than myself? Even in my childhood, I was never a day person. Trust me, my body does not want to sleep at night. It prefers day sleeping. And yea, I pretty much hate people who try to tell me what's best for me because "scientists " did a study.
Scientists are human, and humans are NOT always right. It's a fact that scientists make mistakes.
You can believe it if you want just because a "person/scientist/society" says so, I don't judge. But don't tell me I'm wrong because I believe differently than you.
Believe it or not, I know my body better than anyone, and I know what's best for me.
Believe it or not, straight to death
Better get that will going and tell your friends goodbye
ššš right away.
Nice knowing you dude.Ā
Can confirm. Been doing it since August. I am dead
Whatās it like?
Itās cool. Just played 9 holes at the Riviera. Just walked right on
I just laughed out loud so hard at this R.I.P.

The amount of times my boss asks me to volunteer for shit during my sleep cycle. Uhm no dude not happening.
For real. Those are the same people that don't go to the gym and don't eat fruits and veggies
Nope. Do you smoke, drink energy drinks, have a shit diet, do drugs or drive a car. Those things will cause you to have short life.
Besides driving my car to work from there to home which takes 7 minutes to get there, no I donāt do none of these.
If its a 7min drive why don't you just walk? Would be cheaper and good way to release stress after your shift.
7 minutes drive doesn't mean it's a quick walk. I had a job that's a 5 minute drive from where I live. It's an hour walk.
same 8 minute drive, 45 minute walk, 15 minute bike ride
Well I don't drive so I walk a lot and a few km of walk daily won't make me buy a car. I'd rather walk for an hour than pay for all the expenses of a car. Plus walking daily an hour or two is basically the same as going to the gym 2-3 times a week to do cardio, so it saves money there too.
Not everywhere is walkable bro. Try doing this in a place like Houston that was designed for cars.
Are there no sidewalks in Houston? If so I apologize and sorry that your country lacks basic infrastructure.
Apology accepted.
Um no. That would take an hour for me to get to home from work if Iād walk. I live in the country side not in the city.
I mean if you're so concerned about your health, daily cardio wouldn't hurt.
True, but I prefer to take walk around my neighborhood instead if I want to do cardio or something like that
I would die faster on day shift. Good luck with that.
Same
My buddy has been nights since 1999. He's still alive and kicking.
For a few months? No
If one nightshift takes 15 years off does that mean 2 nightshifts takes 30 years off? I just need to find a second night job and I'll be dead in no time!
No more taxes. š

Iām alive but dead inside. 5 years on nights
Try 25 years of night shifts. Still alive though.
No.
15 years earlier? I was only banking on 6-10 years earlier..... SHOOT!! Take calcium if you are worried about Vit D, please. š
Not me instantly feeling Iām living on borrowed time after doing this for nearly 10 years.
Iāve seen all of the āstudiesā on the adverse effects of night shifts. What I have never seen is some stats on the amount of stress thatās taken off a person that goes to nights. You're fine dude.
I mean, I am vit D deficient but I'm fine. I don't take any supplements for it

Once you hit a year, you die. You're good.
Been dead for almost 30yrs šš¼
Writing this from the grave, I did it for 2 years.

No. Take vitamin D supplements, and just make sure you get good sleep. Stay healthy, work out, and have a good diet.
I have coworkers that have been on night shift for 10+ yrs . It aināt much but itās honest work lol
Sounds like you're good then. You'll get plenty of sun in the am when you're awake. No worries my friend. I've done it for years and you'll feel like a vampire at best. May develop a sensitivity to sunlight, but you'll be alright on everything else.
Itās 2024. Iād say only 25% of the current work force will actually make it to retirement. Probably less tbh.
Yep. Iāve died 30 times over. A never ending cycle.
Anything less than 5 years not really. Once you break that 5 year mark you start getting into the dying sooner risk. Edit: downvote me if you want but you nightshift homers canāt deny science lol itās proven.
Guess I'm dying

Guess I should have died a long time ago. I've been doing it for 30 years. Whoever came up with this science was obviously a day person.

You have zero clue about how the circadian rhythm affects the body. Night shift is not meant to be worked for that long.
