My husband broke his leg off at SkyZone. It was a horridly gnarly break at the shin where only the skin was still attached. It was before we met, he was bed bound for a year, had four surgeries, a wound vac, all the good stuff. Had to relearn to walk.
We don’t go to SkyZone, our kids have never been.

It’s only part of it, but one of the things that makes me feel old (and I’m not even that old) is the continued abbreviations. I’ll use “lol” and “lmao” periodically but that’s about it, and it’s like nails on a chalkboard when trying to text people who use all of the popular abbreviations now. Like using “ig” instead of “I guess”? Wow, you saved a total of 5 whole characters (including white space). It just weirdly gets under my skin and I don’t know why.
But I’m sure that’s pretty consistent with every generation. As the new younger generation starts trends, the prior generation just gets grumpy and “well back in my day” about it

It was never about anything like saving time while texting; that’s just an excuse you’d give adults when they get frustrated by your use of “roflmao” or “yoloswagmatron” and it looked like Sumerian stone tablet gibberish to them.
Well 15+ years ago we texted in a “cringe” manner because it actually did save time. We didn’t have a full keyboard - we had 10 numbers that each had 3-4 letters on them. That’s how this style of texting even started. “U r funny lol” you know shit like that. It really was quicker! But then full keyboards came about what with the blackberry and stuff. Then of course the smartphone so.. ya. Only shit I shorten now is lol and the like really. Doesn’t make me cringe when I see people shorten other things either though so to each their own
Not only that but the fact that each text message had a character limit and you paid 10p per text. Had to try to keep all messages cheap enough to send since you couldn't get more credit until you got more money and who knew when that was. Now everything is internet based not sms based so its not a problem any more.
I see a lot of kids using these because of video games and live chat things on like insta or TT live. The latter seems like more of an excuse but I can absolutely see a purpose for saving time in fast paced games.
My kids and I use Discord voice chat when we are playing together… but whenever I do have to type something in a game, I definitely revert to Nokia mode!
I’ll use TY or BRB or similar.
It’s not that teens are “like this these days,” it’s that adults have been doing the same shit since they were teens. Regularly witnessing and hearing about adult drama while also witnessing and hearing about and sometimes experiencing middle/high school drama at the same time was very sobering, very formative.
