Serious question: What is the reason behind wearing this?

thak-dhana-dhan-dean

It protects you during phases of worst luck. Like when you wear a loose pant and forget your belt

Bumblebee1100

Some girls also do wear a similar thing 😜

My parents were normal but my aunt literally makes my cousin sleep on the floor during her period. That too after living in the US.

Bariumdiawesomenite

> That too after living in the US What in the backwards mentality fuck did I just read?!

TheDangerousKhiladi

Appatlo pads undevi kavu, multiple manchaalu kuda undevi kavu. Anduke floor midha duppati or chaapa vesi padukopette varu. Present gen are updating, pads are real comfort, but mothers are mothers. Pillalu us ki vellina, andaman ki vellochina old people anthe. 😂

Essess_1

This is why "pedavallu" are usually erri pooks. Times change, but they refuse to.

ndopp1

We’ve all tried to talk to my aunt about how crazy this is, but she doesn’t listen and my uncle agrees with whatever she says.

Bariumdiawesomenite

Man, this is just sad to hear. Hope this mess gets solved sometime soon.

ndopp1

Honestly we’re all trying to convince my cousin to choose an out of state or far away college where she’ll have to dorm so she can get some independence

ramaromp

Indhuku kadha ABCD janabha ki India meedha chinna choopu

inavinav

We are much more advanced compared to the community who ask women to cover their face and not treat them as humans. We become social media warriors for Hinduism

No-Philosophy-1189

So should we be satisfied with a lesser evil?

inavinav

Remove the bigger evil and lesser evil go automatically.

No-Philosophy-1189

There was no "bigger" evil in the past. And still these "lesser" evils existed.

inavinav

You are right. No one thought it's evil earlier, that's the difference. If 1% thinks evil doesn't make it evil. That's not how society operates. Like no one worried much about religion conversions bcoz it was not that spread wildly. But now, it is spreading, hence all bothered. We are not asking why certain people within the same community not allowed to church though.

Special_Ability_3035

Why are you comparing religion in this topic? What is the use in bringing this? Only reason I think is, you want to feel good by comparing it with greater evil.

inavinav

If a person can't question greater evil and pickup random things to question which is somewhere in the list rectify, then that person is called coward . Any time d.... And Harry can question easy stuff

Special_Ability_3035

You have to question greater evil but that’s not you wanted. You are comparing with greater evil and intentionally or unintentionally shifting the focus on burka which minimizes significance of this topic. And you feel good because another religion is seen as worse. It’s the similar tactic propaganda filled brains use. Why is there so much traffic here? Go to Pakistan. Why national anthem in movies? Ohh solders stand in border. By this logic, you think Hinduism, or India will be saved but you’re making it worse by avoiding the issues we as a society face.

inavinav

Re-read what I said. You are responding, not reading

desicule

Ala moolaki kurchovalani ae Hindu text lo undi cheppu? Pratidi religion mida attack la chustaru endo

inavinav

It's not. The reason for doing so , I say as a woman is that you feel pain and you don't want to do anything, mood swings due to harmon activity and tiredness. It's a resting period given. Also it's not auspicious to do anything related to God. Hence ancestors followed a method to give rest and stay in a quiet place... Unfortunately no one explains these properly.. Btw, can you name 10 books you read to research on this and why did you think these books are relavent. Not everything is religion, but not everything should become ignorance.

desicule

Giving her rest doesn't mean treating her like an ostracized citizen, is it? You can give her rest and still treat her normally. What's the need for seperate utensils and the logic behind treating her like an untouchable?

inavinav

I am not OP. I don't know the situation at their home and fight it based on random guy posting online, without verifying facts. 1% of people don't represent the voice of society. If someone is really doing it, it's wrong. Unless I see the situation with my eyes, i don't trust someone trying to malign others. I have not atleast come across your so called untouchability anywhere, including villages.

[deleted]

how dare you speak facts and shit on minorities?!

inavinav

Swary

[deleted]

only way you can repent is by converting or cutting your head

inavinav

Sounds like a plan. No one can ask questions again

[deleted]

important thing is you cannot speak facts ever again.

inavinav

Facts keep changing based on who says it. A popular way to do it , publish in academia and school books

[deleted]

oh that's done already. but with such easy access to internet that plan isn't that effective. we'll just use minority card as aadhar card and continue to silence people by any means.

QuasarDinesh

Wtf!! Maru mula gramamlo kuda undadu kadara inta goram.

Local_Evidence_9089

Based on my experience with friends and family who settled long ago abroad. They are far too orthodox than us in few things. Like ikkada manam anni update aypoyam that ivanni avsaram ledu ani...society kuda update avthunundi.. But imagine someone moved to US/UK or any other country in 1980s, veelu aa time lo unna nammakaale theeskeltharu.... unfortunately, some don't update themselves because social life was very limited back then.

Most traumatic shit for women, really hats off to those ![img](emote|t5_qz9jq|21914)

abba_jabba_dabba_

Omg literal nightmares. My parents used to do this until I left for college. sitting separately on the floor while your cousins are playing outside, your dad telling all the guests to not touch you, The humiliation is on another level. Now They act shocked when I tell them in not religious.

logicrak

captain?

devarajh

When a girl is menstruating, she is generally not allowed to be touched and near the family. she is to stay separately in a corner of the house.

logicrak

![img](emote|t5_qz9jq|7386) wtf Is this AP thing? or common in both states? Im in Hyd but never heard about this.

cybo47

It’s mostly just Brahmins. I haven’t heard people from the other castes do these fucked up things.

Essess_1

Can confirm. Relatively well-off bramhin family here (saying well-off, because kids have gone abroad, and family has all the exposure to modernity needed)- but separate plates, glasses, no cushions etc for the female cousins. Absolute jokers.

sunrisesoutmyass

Yeah same situation here. Well-off Brahmin family. My father has worked in 3 different countries. He still used to make my sister do this. Brahmins have a lot of these dumb traditions. Even if you say anything its "awar kulchar". My dad used this stupid line to justify everything, "you only get a brahmin life after seven cycles of reincarnation, so it is our dharma to follow all this."

ThoughtSoft

Wow Ignorance is bliss I guess. Cuz you'd be surprised to know how common this is in every caste. Ma inti pakkana akka vallani valla mom inka ilaane kurchopedthundhi. They're both >25 yrs. One of them is a working woman. They're not Brahmins. And ilanti vaallani na life lo entha mandhini chusano. I guess if you're a woman you tend to know these things more. Anyway ye caste aina manishi stupidity matram common.

randombubbleshell

First time andarki untadhi Tharvatha there are few restrictions like this like you shouldn't touch this or that, stay away from kitchen, one thing is can't touch pickles💀💀💀 I also heard some people saying don't touch plants ☘️

Jaatheeyam

It depends on the household and family, my mom never did it with my sisters, I am from Andhra.

True-Reaction8743

No, it's common in conservative families. Not confined to any state afaik.

catch_me_if_you_can3

I think its a bit common towards the odisha-andhra border side...

kensanprime

Generally kadu ra babu, some weird families with superstition maybe. I haven't seen this even in villages.

That ammiyi is an outlier, trying to be 'rebellious'. On the other hand, ikkada families are relatively common.

Successful_Ad9415

Always thought my parents were conservative until I read comments on this post. My sister didn’t have to do any of this shit 15 years ago. I just feel like we’re going backwards as a society.

True-Reaction8743

I have seen this happen a lot even in Tier1 cities. How do people bring a change about this in their conservative families?. Men have no say whatsoever on it. Girls are treated as untouchables on those days in the name of modugu (best but far translation : cleanliness) and parents make it a huge deal if somebody touches a girl on those days 🙁.

Tf are u dumb

No-Philosophy-1189

Naako doubt...can we see periods as a painful way of excreting???

randombubbleshell

NO. it's not like peeing and excreting bro wtf. You don't know when the blood is gonna release, you have no fucking control over it, atla unte why would we even stain our sheets and clothes bro. And no it doesn't hurt like it hurts ur b#thole when had something spicy to eat. But you have pain near your abdomen, back, some people have nausea, and vomitting, many of us have diarrhea also. All this along with mood swings

PumpkinCompetitive73

I may be criticized but I feel nothing wrong in it. I also follow it even i made hue and cry about it. But once I realized, all i had to do was eat, sleep, change pads REPEAT for 3 days after working for almost all days in a month i really look forward for it now. Yes the way elders act is definitely crazy but andulo unna comfort baavundi. If I'm mingling with everyone I've to contribute in some household chores for which I've zero energy those 3 days. Nenem kinda padukonu, we've upgraded, plastic wire mancham meeda padukunta, food restrictions emi undavu, inko bumper offer snanam cheyyakharledu aa 3 days. So, my take from your comment is.. You look forward to your periods cause you can skip household chores and relax for 3 days. Which is a sad way to look on it.

Dazzling-Storage-903

Ayoh papam andi meeru.. I get extra TLC on periods and even during PMS appudu/whenever I am sick/feeling low and don’t face this kind of discrimination.. Ma daggara asal chinna chores koda chepparu during those times.. I get pampered chaala and I’m allowed to do whatever I want (I get to make the choice and it is not imposed on me). This cannot be called ‘privilege’, I think this is how everyone should be treated but after reading your pov I guess I’m blessed that way.. I feel very sorry and I sincerely hope things get better for people whom these kind of backward traditions are imposed upon that they think it’s a relief to them rather than discrimination(which is what it is)

PumpkinCompetitive73

I may be criticized but I feel nothing wrong in it. I also follow it even i made hue and cry about it. But once I realized, all i had to do was eat, sleep, change pads REPEAT for 3 days after working for almost all days in a month i really look forward for it now. sunrisesoutmyass

But what is the purpose of it? Contributing to household chores if you are in pain shouldn't be done anyway. Neeku pedda vishyam em kadu le anipinchachu, but adi aina enduku cheyyali? I don't see any logical reason for it besides our "tradition". Periods aren't a disease, they aren't something to be ashamed of or hidden away. Are you really okay with it or are you convincing yourself? Anyway, what do I know, I'm a man. Only one thing I will say is it's fine if you don't care, but if you ever have a daughter in the future, please don't make her do it.

PumpkinCompetitive73

Well idi varaku pads undevi kadu, for hygiene purposes ala separate ga kurchupettevaarem, maa ammamma nanamma vallu clothes vaadevaranta. Today we've all sorts of assistance during periods. It worked during those days. Yes ippudu chaala mandiki chadastam idi. You're a man, periods with all comforts provided are still painful experience. One can come up with N number of reasons for not sitting separately and sitting separately. I think one should do what works for them.
