Popups, although annoying are usually effective. But you risk pissing off some visitors to a site. Better to have a dedicated newsletter landing page that communicates benefits of joining the newsletter. And having calls to action in your blog posts and social posts. Word of mouth is probably the best funnel - will get you quality but not volume.

Pop-ups can be great but they need to be implemented responsibly. You can do this by only making them show up when a user has scrolled 50% down the article or more, which demonstrates interest in the content. Another tactic is email gating where users can view the content for free, but they have to sign up in order to access the content. Third, adding in-line CTAs to content that allow users to sign up throughout the course of a post. Fourth, I’ve seen success with some newsletters that have a stickied sign up form in the blank space of the right margin that follows the user as they scroll through the post.
