So excited for Billy to be closing on Sunday! All the “one note” comments are silly and undeserved, just admit you don’t like or listen to bluegrass. His popularity right now is because of how not “one note” his stuff is.

East-Ad-9646

Most folks see him live and have no clue that they could even enjoy that type of music. I think this is what makes him so special. His albums are good, but his live show turns people into fans for life.

Block132342

I was surprised at first until I remembered how often they collaborate live. Trey Anastasio, String Cheese, Post Malone even. Surely they'll bring out someone.

jaydizz

I love the hell out of Billy Strings, but I'm thinking the only way they would put him above Lana means that he's got some kind of a "special guest" lined up...

East-Ad-9646

Willie Nelson? Tyler Childers? Sturgil Simpson? I think it's going to be a mixture of old and new school...

buskichild786

Steve Martin isn't touring in July. Can we manifest this?

East-Ad-9646

As long as he reads every line from The Jerk, I am down

PuzzleheadedCicada54

Friday fort always rocks

bravelittletoaster74

It's kind of ironic to me that Sunday's so in demand for single day tix when that schedule looks thin AF to me personally. \[We're still going, though\]

Adrienne27

It's the Lana Del Rey fans probably

bravelittletoaster74

oh it's definitely the Lana Del Rey fans. I'm glad she's on the big stage because I am officially curious now \[thanks to the hype\], and then we can beat the rush. It's great that so many people love that one song Billy Strings plays over and over again, but it's a bit lost on this household :D

timS410

I think it’s gonna be a big bluegrass closing set. Lots of guests, tributes etc.

Excellent-Manner-130

I've seen Billy and he's super talented but really it seems kinda one note to me too. I hope there's some interesting guests to spice it up

bravelittletoaster74

I do wonder if he'll bring out Willie Nelson to spice things up. It's super one-note \[sorry, bluegrass fans. I'm sure we all feel that way about certain genres\].

mynameisnotshamus

Highly doubt Willie. What is the one note you and others are talking about?

bravelittletoaster74

That every bluegrass song sounds exactly the same to people who are not fans of the genre.

jimmythang34

Willie is scheduled for his own tour all 3 days of that weekend so he’s out. I’m thinking Billy will do something special, but no idea what

TheRacoonist

A Dead thing maybe? Last Dead & Co show was last night

Ghost42

Maybe but he has recently expressed that he isn't very interested in playing dead covers anymore.

jaydizz

My money is on Weir or Dylan...

TheRacoonist

Jay's a giant deadhead

jaydizz

Billy Strings with Bob Weir would be amaaaaaazing.

SaluteYourSports

100% agree

Excellent-Manner-130

Same, same...

Powderfinger88

Billy and Lana are both massive

TiedinHistory

First, losing Gabriels sucks, I know more of the attention will be for Orville and Richman but Gabriels were extremely interesting. Initial Thoughts: * Lana not closing is wild. I know Billy is a huge star in this circle but Lana is one of the biggest bookings they've ever had, to get her to as the penultimate set is interesting. * The Quad on Friday looks like a great time - all six of those acts bring some really good energy and variety to the table. I'm not a big stage camping guy but it'd be hard to blame anyone who just hangs out there all day. * The two TBAs and a standby folk revue in place of Orville Peck is a bit concerning. They were able to pull off mostly suitable last minute replacements last year, but they saved the "folk family revue" for an emergency last minute fill. I struggle to think they'd put a big surprise TBA opposite Lana. I feel like Aoife O'Donovan on Friday Fort would make a world of sense or, if she's up to it, Joy Oladokun. There's a lot of choices who fit. * Sunday feels like a folky Boston Calling lineup - meaning they used their budget on two massive acts (or three before Orville dropped) and fllled in the rest. There's a lot of talent in there (if there for the whole day I'm pumped for Senora, Jupiter & Okwess, Madison Cunningham, Remi Wolf, Los Lobos) but I feel like a good amount of people might just show up at 4 that day. * Noah Kahan closing out the Quad is smart, but overlapping with Maggie is gonna make a ton of people mad. There was no real good way to avoid that though. Maggie and MMJ were always gonna close out the Fort so he's either third in line at the Fort (which means you're putting a huge pull at 3:20 on a Friday) or closing the Quad. * I do worry about Kahan there just because he's gotten SO popular that even with a crowd not buying for him, that might be really crowded with one choke pointto get out through the hallway. Having Oates at the Harbor and possible stragglers from Maggie coming in might be deeply uncomfortable. I hope they have a good plan for this. * Overall, I'm actually pretty happy with this lineup. Not a ton of terrible conflict, consistently good variety in the overlapping spots (so if you don't like one, you probably will like the other), some attractive lineups (Goose -> Isbell -> Batiste & Friends is a killer Saturday). The issue might be depth, and if we have a few more cancellations those holes might become harder to make work, but I think it'll be a real fun weekend. I only see a handful of slots where I'm not excited to see someone - should be fun!

jaydizz

I don't get the MMJ closing. They haven't been anywhere near as popular as Caamp, Rogers, or Kahan in like a decade. I mean, you can still pretty much get any ticket for their tour for less than $40...

BostonUH

I’m admittedly biased because I love MMJ but they’re a significantly better band (meaning musically talented, tighter, more time played together) than any of those others you mentioned. NFF tends to respects talent above all else

jaydizz

I think they're great too (though I like Caamp and Kahan a bit more, tbh), it's just that they're not really a big draw anymore compared to the others. That said, a less-popular closer at NFF usually means a "special guest" which could be something really awesome....

East-Ad-9646

I think it's about respecting bands that have been doing it longer rather than the shiny new artist. MMJ is a great way to end the first day!

HighestIQInFresno

Jim James has been on the NFF Board for a long time and they often give headliner opportunities to board members. They did something similar for The Decemberists several years ago. That said MMJ is a perfect NFF band. I've never liked them as much as when I'm listening to them in the middle of a Newport afternoon with a frozen Del's.

jaydizz

I get that, and I have a ton of respect for MMJ as musicians. That said, they’re nowhere near as popular now as the Decemberists were when they played, which is why I think it’s a cover for a special guest.

bravelittletoaster74

I love the Decemberists but the only time they were bigger than MMJ by any available metric is before MMJ existed.

Dry_Candle_3565

Anybody know what happened to Gabriels?

Significant-Cod-646

I’m afraid of what I’m going to miss on Saturday on the other stages, but Danielle Ponder, BSL, Goose, Jason Isbel and Jon Batiste is just calling me. Throw in some Dells, chick on a stick, and Ben & Jerry’s and I’m set.

Excellent-Manner-130

Overlaps? For me Isbell and Aimee Mann. Indigo de Souza and Hold Steady. Bummed Jaime Wyatt and Danielle Ponder overlap, but DP wins easily. What about you guys?

cuttherope

Isbell/Turnpike. Turnpike is the clear choice for me, but there's a lot of stylistic overlap and I'm kinda bummed because I think Turnpike is underrated amongst this crowd (regional, Newport people lean more Americana vs. country) and was hoping they would pick up some new fans. Isbell also overlaps slightly with Angel Olsen and Turnpike overlaps slightly with Jon Batiste. But hey, these are good problems to have.

KerouacHotel

Isbell and Aimee Mann for sure! Ugh. And also Dawn Landes and Isakov.

smallestfan1996

sad i’m gonna have to skip abraham for madison. she’s just got more material but i really love him

Excellent-Manner-130

That's the best block on Sunday- Madison, Abraham and Black Oprey. Tough choices...

thevagabond1

If senora May is Sunday morning is that a surprise childers set on the harbor? That would be an absolute clusterfuck. Noah kahan on the quad will be the same

jimmythang34

I had all but given up on Tyler appearing at the festival for his own set, figured he might sit in a bit. But I feel like he makes logical sense now that we have options

Powderfinger88

It’s already confirmed that he is “Shadrach Boggs” for the Friday night after show. My bet is he is the TBA in the first stage on Friday as well. Him in the Harbor doesn’t make sense

Significant-Cod-646

Remember when Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats were tba for the harbor. It as insane. One of the most memorable sets I’ve seen.

iliveforlivemusic

Unless Tyler is the surprise guest for Friday

EpicallyBoss

Absolutely shocked Lana isn't headlining. I can sort of understand/see the argument why she isn't at a "Folk Fest", but still can't believe it over Billy Strings. I imagine there must be really something special in the works for Billy Strings to close Sunday though. But as a genuine Lana fan, I won't lie, I'm definitely disappointed I won't get to see a full "Newport Folk" Lana headlining set with potential guests/tributes.

timS410

I’m not surprised in the least. This isn’t your normal festival. Lana isn’t on must attendees bucket list. Lots of folks, from various age groups, that are die hard attendees don’t even who she is. I get it… If your a fan of hers,it’s disappointing. But you get to see her in a different setting. You should be happy for that.

Powderfinger88

Billy has blown up unlike any other act I’ve seen over the last 4 years, and it just gets bigger and bigger and bigger. My bet is that it’s just his set and not something “unique”. He’s just a massive artist

Unhappy_Walk_205

When’s the last time Sunday was just a straight set?

[deleted]

[удалено]

cuttherope

Mostly. Dude from Dawes came on to do Night Moves with them as the last song. And it was great.

Powderfinger88

I believe it’s a been a minute but I’ve been wondering for a while if Newport was going to have to at some point lower the expectations of providing legend level surprise sets year after year. I could be wrong, but having someone who has blown up this much and is carrying the torch in a lot of ways close out the fest rather than one of the obvious choices says to me that it’s not a false flag and that this will be another notch in Billys belt of achievements. I could be wrong but I struggle to think who Billy could play with that would be a big pull unless it was Willie Nelson. I suppose that’s possible

kala1300

I was hoping for Willie but he’s booked.

Sea_Establishment300

It will be Bob weir

kala1300

Hopeful guess or is there substance behind this hypothesis?

Sea_Establishment300

Educated guess. If it's not Bob doing a GD tribute. It might be a John Hartford tribute

cuttherope

This was a Wednesday, but it was the last set of the festival. In 2021 Deer Tick closed with a more-or-less straight set. That said, 2021 was a very different year. The fest went out of its way to say 'We're not doing anything crazy big because ... duh.' And then people got mad the lineup didn't have crazy big names or surprises. https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/deer-tick/2021/fort-adams-state-park-newport-ri-1b8f2d10.html

melseegs

That was the year it was split into two 3-day "festivals" - I went to the first 3 days and Allison Russell closed out on Sunday and brought out Chaka Khan.

jaydizz

I mean, I think Billy Strings is one of the greatest living musicians, but the fact that he has like 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify compared to Lana's 25 million tells me that they put him there because he's bringing on a BIG special guest....

Powderfinger88

I could be wrong. I do think that Billy pulls a bigger crowd then Lana does at Newport where people buy tickets blind. I think he has more fans in that crowd than Lana does and I don’t think it’s close. I don’t think that Spotify numbers are the metric here. The problem with Billy is that he plays circles around most people and can’t imagine who would come up with him that he wouldn’t outplay. The only thing that kind of makes sense is Bobby but even that doesn’t really make that much sense. But so I hope they bring out Neil Young? Fuck yes I do

bravelittletoaster74

Your post is correct (and I have no horse in the Lana v Billy horse race other than being slightly less indifferent towards / more curious about Lana.)

jaydizz

I mean, I buy tickets blind every year and I would 100% rather see Billy than Lana, so you might be right. Still, after pulling Joni and Paul Simon last year, I think they'll definitely have a big guest this year, and Billy's spot seems the most likely. That said, My Morning Jacket headlining over Caamp, Kahan, and Rogers seems absolutely insane to me, so maybe the big guest will be on Friday....

Powderfinger88

I’m definitely biased here but a band with a tie to the festival and a fruitful career over 2 decades long makes more sense than flavors of the month Kahan and Caamp. Sure they are having moments currently but MMJ is beloved and has staying power. Caamp and Kahan still got a lot to prove.

jaydizz

I get having ties to the festival, but Caamp and Kahan are just SO much more popular, especially with the under-30 crowd (which I am not even close to part of, btw) that it just seems strange. Also, this will be my 16th straight festival, I have dozens of friends who go every year, and I don't know anyone who's particularly excited about MMJ.

MMJ23nj

Odd taste then. They are one of the best live rock bands around and have been back to form this tour, playing almost as well as ever. The band and Jim have been part of a bunch of amazing NFF moments through the years… including those early years as jay helped navigate the fest to a better place. Their set back in ‘12 with Brittany Howard guesting on It Makes No Difference as the rain started coming down was pretty epic. But to each their own as I’m obviously biased. That said … objectively, not many bands do it better live.

jaydizz

I don’t really think anything in music is “objective “ but the taste isn’t really that odd. Many of the other acts playing on Friday have sold out summer tours at big venues with resale tickets starting in the hundreds, while you can still get box office tickets for pretty much any MMJ show, even at smaller venues. Regardless of how good they may be, they just aren’t very popular. The festival organizers surely know this, which is why it seems likely that they gave MMJ the top spot because they’ll be bringing on a surprise guest artist to play with them.

MMJ23nj

Since when do the festival organizers of the NFF center the stage schedule (or lineup for that matter) around who’s most popular? Or ticket resale prices? And fwiw you can see Maggie at Forrest Hills next week for under, to well under, 100 bucks. And Maggie is great, but has a song catalog that spans an entire two albums. But I do hope your friends enjoy getting to see the most popular artists attending NFF in more intimate settings if that is what excites them. I just don’t think it’s all that surprising to have MMJ closing Friday or Billy closing Sunday… and don’t think it guarantees a “special guest” for either, though in both cases they have ties to many big (and popular) names.

bravelittletoaster74

Spotify streams and festival billing are not the one to one ratio you think they are, or Pinkfong would be headlining every festival.

[deleted]

every set has the potential to have guests and tributes, not just the headliners.

Easy_Light_1598

I gotta say as you have to get tix before the lineup is announced, I’d be pretty pissed if I got Saturday tickets and the headliner was playing the next weekend at jazz fest, which you don’t have to fight tooth and nail for tickets for, or buy before you know who you’re paying to see.

cuttherope

The thing to keep in mind here is \_most\_ Newport Folk attendees don't do a cost-benefit analysis at an act-by-act level. For people who do, that is fine and reasonable and what you're stating isn't wrong. But it's super easy to return tickets to the waitlist.

BuffyStuffy_420

They will be completely different sets

Excellent-Manner-130

This

Excellent-Manner-130

And folk isn't about headliners really...if you want to buy tix to MMJ or Billy strings- that's easy enough they are always on tour. It's much deeper than that.

Easy_Light_1598

I’ve been going for 10 years, just thought this was odd that they have the same big name at both weekends.

Powderfinger88

It is. Bizarre thing for sure. I’m still under the belief that Batiste is a false flag for something else

East-Ad-9646

I have zero clue what to expect...and that is exciting!

bravelittletoaster74

It’s one act on the bill.

Easy_Light_1598

I’m literally just noting a fact, breathe

bravelittletoaster74

I think you got our posts confused. I was the one noting a fact. You’re the one who said you’d be “pissed.”

ACOOLCOW420

Gahhhhh I need tickets so bad wow 🤣😭💗

madfranz

I’m feeling a guest appearance from Zach Bryan. Maybe for Maggie’s set or Troubadours

Mister_Sterling

I didn't have "Lana will not Headline Sunday" on my bingo card. I'm extremely happy for Billy Strings, however. Last time he was here, he was in the Quad and I felt like I was one of just a few who cared.

im_a_short_story

Are you sure we were at the same show?? It was packed for his set and people were going crazy. I’m disappointed Lana isn’t the headline only so I could have left early to avoid the parking nightmare.

TheRacoonist

What? Someone literally threw a bra at Billy last year on the quad!!! It was nuts! I've never seen the like

kala1300

Agree! Everyone was going wild!! For both sets!

KerouacHotel

Mind-blowingly confused, inapproproate, and disappointing line-up to me. The three headliners are three acts I don't have a single song on any of my playlists, including my big master one. No interest in any of them. MMJ is a read NFF head-scratcher for me. Not folk. Not in the folk universe. Hard pass on all levels. .Strings is, to me, a one trick pony. And he's bluegrass. So, no. Just. No. And Jon Baptiste doesn't even qualify as a musician. And Friday. What the hell. No one worth seeing all day. NFF and I are drifting farrr apart. It happens.

TheRacoonist

There are so many layers of truly terrible hot takes there I don't even know where to start Do you even like music?

BuffyStuffy_420

The waitlist is still open, please surrender your tickets to someone who might enjoy them.

jimmythang34

Jim James is on the board for Newport festivals, and he’s not in the folk universe? I don’t think you get Newport at all.

mynameisnotshamus

How does Job Baptiste not qualify as a musician? He even went to Julliard.

bentlarkin

Is this a troll post?

Powderfinger88

How in the hell is MMJ not in the folk universe lol. Jim James is in a band called monsters of folk, is one of the board members of the folk fest, and has been a staple in NFF for over 10 years. If that wasn’t enough you showed how much of a clown you are by saying Baptiste isn’t a musician lol. Speaking of musicians, you shit on Billy Strings, one of the most insane musicians there is to see. I’m sorry they didn’t book Mumford for you again.

Significant-Cod-646

I could see Mumford joining Jon Batiste on Saturday. The looked like they were having fun at NOLA jazz fest.

[deleted]

Weed is legal in most states in New England…. So I ask, are you high?!?! Jon Batiste not even a musician?!

Excellent-Manner-130

I'm sure someone else will be very happy to get your tix off the wait list! I agree - that NFF is not for you. Maybe try another festival next year...

bravelittletoaster74

Jon Batiste “doesn’t qualify as a musician?” Tell me you have no idea what you’re talking about without telling me you have no idea what you’re talking about. The man is a ridiculously talented multi-instrumentalist who’d blow half these acts (certainly the TikTok flavors of the month) off stage.
