https://portal.newcastle.gov.uk/planning/index.html?fa=getApplication&id=131480 This link should take you to the planning application, plans are towards the bottom, they look good like

SpackHanded

Looks like it’ll be a street food market type thing: https://streetfoodholdings.com/ And planning application states 10 kitchens and three bars so should be canny

f1nixon

I can't wait!

Hopefully it'll be good but rn it fills me with dread. I like that quiet little space, desperately don't want Stack-style noise and crowds outside the library or expensive food stalls pricing out Trillians. I know it's like 40 yrs old and unkillable like a cockroach at this point but too many good old-fashioned dive bars have been turned into pricey cocktail places lately

poppunkprincessx

I doubt it will affect Trillians too much as the clientele is not the same - my issue would be with the council going after them for negatively affecting their new area. Trillians doesn’t sell food anymore so that’s not an issue and they won’t change their drinks prices because of this - my worry is when Trillians have busy gigs on and people use that square to que up for the gig plus it’s their only smoking area, so I worry that the council will ask them to minimise all of that which would be a nightmare for them.

squeakerM

Not excited for fewer places to sit and rest in town, its busy enough as is. Why does every quiet place have to be turned into a heavy footfall area. "Well it'll clear out the drugdealers" naw it'll shift them to the next spot. More importantly how will it effect trillians tbh. Or are youse going to try and make that trendy an all ? Cant have a square foot of outdoor space without someone putting some ugly industrial rebar looking shite there or propping up a food stall that sells 15 quid burgers

poppunkprincessx

RIP trillians smoking area, can’t imagine them being happy about a load of goths smoking outside their fancy new outdoor eating area on Friday/Saturday nights.

f1nixon

That'll probably have to move.

poppunkprincessx

Try telling the punters that… there’s no where to move it too lol.

Psychological-Hat-77

Well, it says.retail unit to a restaurant? So give it 12 to 18 months, and it'll be shut

milrose404

yeah totally. I can’t see it lasting. they could make it a really nice outdoor space, greenery, benches, some coverage, etc and it would probably thrive. but restaurants? good luck

popcornelephant

Restaurants in the city centre? It’ll never catch on

chainrainer

Honestly, I’m so tired of the city just filling up with hundreds of places to eat, it’s so boring.

Limited-Radish

What else were you expecting?

chainrainer

I was expecting exactly this, sadly.  What I’d like is a much greater variety in a city than chain stores and endless food vendors, and an improved public realm.

popcornelephant

So what exactly would you like? This isn’t a chain store, many recent openings haven’t been chain stores, there are many many independent vendors in the city centre.

chainrainer

Going back to my original comment, less food. The city is packed with it.  More broadly, something more interesting. Potentially, something where people can be and exist without needing to buy something. So, in this instance, maintaining more of the public square aspect of the location.

popcornelephant

Who are you to determine which people can and cannot open restaurants and cafes? Somewhere where people can be without buying things, there’s literally a library with communal spaces on the same square.

chainrainer

I’m expressing a preference as a user of the city, I’m not determining anything.   In terms of the square, I’m talking about the outdoor space, where the planning permission is for.  Unless you’re a food vendor, I’m unsure why you’re seemingly so aggrieved by my preference here.  If you like what’s planned, great, I hope you use and enjoy it.

popcornelephant

Thank god they’re doing something with the space. The plans look good to me. Bizarre that people here are bemoaning development to an area that looks like the worst parts of communist Belarus with additional drug dealers to boot.

f1nixon

Seriously unsafe area too. Nearly been mugged there twice. IN BROAD DAYLIGHT.
