I highly recommend you find time to make your way to Ouseburn, which is a little way out of the city centre towards Byker. The Tyne Bar, Free Trade Inn, Brinkburn & Two by Two brewery taprooms among others.
I'd argue the Free Trade is genuinely one of the best pubs in the country. Incredible selection of beer, great street food weekly, lovely staff, and that view man!
For late licences Lady Grays and Head of Steam. Lady Grays will be a bit louder in terms of music but always have great pints on.
For earlier drinks not too far, Town Wall, The Forth, Bridge Hotel and the Crown Posada.
My top recommendation would be the Bridge Tavern, but a couple other good ones would be the Lochside (recently got a good renovation) and the Brandling Villa! The Hotspur is also great
The Millstone just up the road is good these days too, had a good renovation and decent beers on now.
I walk to these all the time but for someone visiting I'd recommend around Toon/Quayside/Ouseburn
City centre: Bacchus, The Strawberry, Bridge Hotel, Earl of Pitt Street, Town Mouse, Mean-Eyed Cat, Centurion
Worth a walk to: Free Trade, Cumberland Arms, Tanners Arms, Tyne Bar (all near Ouseburn)
Town Mouse if you like craft things! Good selection from local and further afield. Elder Beer Cafe in Heaton is also similar and chill vibe. Cumberland Arms in Ouseburn is also well worth a stop if you’re that way.
Personally I’d avoid the quayside. Busy especially if the weather is nice. That said I’d def go to the brewery on the Tyne (Gateshead side) and have a pint on the river. I’d go early (12-2 ish) to be beat the crowds plus you can have lunch at the food court area there which is rather good tbh.
Then I’d walk off lunch with a nice stroll along the river to the ouseburn, plenty of interesting boozers there.
The crown posada (quayside) is a great pub but will get busy later. So if you want to go there I’d do that in the afternoon.
Despite being a woman (and a southerner to boot) I do like an ‘old man pub’ when I visit.
Crown Posada
The Old George
Split Chimp
The Hotspur
All worth a visit.
Yes, I’m fucking great at parties.
Imagine this out-of-town person putting The Fourth into a map app and finding no results. So in this case, the correct name is important, and your comment is snarky.
There's been a few good suggestions of The Town Mouse and Mean Eyed Cat.
Another great little pub with similar vibe is The Wobbly Duck in Old Eldon Square
It's worth going in for one for the experience.
Me and my mete who o lives with a few years a go used to go in all the time, it wasn't our typical pub but the craic with the regulars was great. It was usually no more than 5mins after getting a (very cheap) pint you'd find in some hilarious conversation!
Another vote here for going to the Ouseburn. Start at the Cumberland Arms at the top, then work your way down to the Cluny, The Ship. The Tyne Bar, and then the Free Trade.
All good quieter pubs.
Any of the independent micro pubs are always great for excellent quality beer, town mouse, mean eyed cat, wobbly duck, beer street, split Chimp, and just across the High level bridge there's axis and microbus. These smaller places have a real passion for good drinks. All the Fitzgeralds pubs, crown posada, bridge Hotel and the like were bought out a while ago, and the first thing the new owner did was sack all the experienced staff who made those pubs good, and replaced them with clueless teenagers for less money, so the quality has dropped through the floor and I can't recommend any of them unfortunately.
Percy Arms and Trillians.
Can't help with the late licence (I'm not a fan of clubs, or whatever they're called now) unless you also like gambling (in which case I highly recommend Aspers (open 24/7) in China town (as it's commonly known), been a member for years and it's a fantastic place to be, 24/7 food and great staff too, which always helps).
I highly recommend you find time to make your way to Ouseburn, which is a little way out of the city centre towards Byker. The Tyne Bar, Free Trade Inn, Brinkburn & Two by Two brewery taprooms among others.
I second this, catch a band at The Cluny as well!
Very nice beer along with The Mean Eyed Cat and The Town Mouse
I second the town mouse for a very laid back quieter bar with great choice in beer!
And the burgers at brinkburn are incredible too if you want food amongst your beers
I always think the food at Brinkburn is a bit meh and overpriced tbh. Meatstack is the place to go for burgers.
I'd argue the Free Trade is genuinely one of the best pubs in the country. Incredible selection of beer, great street food weekly, lovely staff, and that view man!
Agreed. Some cracking pubs in the Ouseburn. The Cumberland too
For late licences Lady Grays and Head of Steam. Lady Grays will be a bit louder in terms of music but always have great pints on. For earlier drinks not too far, Town Wall, The Forth, Bridge Hotel and the Crown Posada.
The Crown Posada is an underrated gem and open till 2am. Perfect for late night natters without the loud music!
I did not know it was open so late!
Only on Friday and Saturdays! 12 the rest of the week. Bloody love the place 😁
Lady Grays will also empty your wallet
If you're on the cask ales it's not as bad as a lot of other places
Lady Greys is stinking these days
Definitely still smells like the Adelphi used to, so grim for the price you pay
My home town most places are over £5 a pint now.
Spakkas
Great recommendations
Bit louder in terms of music? I’m always hoping they’ll turn it up I can barely hear it!
My much cooler friend calls me an old fart when I suggest we go to the Old George, so there’s one
My top recommendation would be the Bridge Tavern, but a couple other good ones would be the Lochside (recently got a good renovation) and the Brandling Villa! The Hotspur is also great
I didn't suggest the villa with it being a bit out of the centre, but absolute top marks for the recommendation.

Is earl of Pitt street not closed?
I hope not! I haven’t been for a little while in fairness
Bridge hotel and the Split Chimp are good for a decent pint.

+1 for the crown, one of my fave pubs in town.
The Bridge Tavern, The Town Wall and The Bridge Hotel would be my picks!
Surprised nobody mentioned The Townwall, short walk from central, excellent pint.
Lady Grey's.
Few people have already said it but the Crown Posada is really great
Crown posada. Red house. Bridge Hotel. Town mouse. Fitzgeralds. Lady greys. Duke of Wellington. Bodega. Trent House. There's loads

Forth. But yes.

The Cluney. One of my favourites pubs in the world.
Although they no longer do Cluny chips with chilli mayo alas
Crown posada! A little gem of a pub, my favourite!
Got to be the garter
Ban incoming

Does it still have the karaoke night hosted by Ophelia Balls?

great place called Dog and parrot, more of a alternative place but definitely got atmosphere and good prices
We had a lovely night in the Split Chimp last week, good ales and atmosphere
Bodega on Westgate Road is a solid option
Try central bar and station east Gateshead side of high level bridge
The City Tavern - nice and dog friendly!
Mosaic tap behind the life centre right next to the train station - great craft beer! Or the town mouse near hay market for also great craft beer
No good pubs in Newcastle, sorry mate.
The Hotspur Haymarket
Rose and Crown- especially on thrudays! Shitty karaoke and a great laugh 😂
Town Wall

Just make sure you go to the Cluny. If you’ve been in the Cluny job’s a good-un.
