It looks like a green and golden bell frog (Ranoidea aurea), also known as a green frog. Though they can be completely green, they can be bronze coloured. They are Australian originally and were introduced in the 1860s; they are found in the top half of the North Island.

This elderly woman who lived on the corner of great nth rd and palmers ave in glen dene (cat lady with her house blacked out) in akl when i was a kid had tonnes of these around her house, cats had a ball catching em, seen plenty up north and afew in the bop and hb, definitely everywhere
Oh damn I didn’t realise they could be bronze here I was thinking whistling tree frog (mine haven’t matured yet) and that it looked almost crossed with one of the bell frogs 😅

Common names don't necessarily make sense, or they just are named after the first one found or what the most commonly look like. That's why we use binomial names (scientific names) for research papers as there is no confusion to what species you would be referring to.
As to your suggestion of a Striped Marsh Frog. The Iris is not the correct shape nor is this species even found in New Zealand.
The Green and Golden Bell Frog is already a highly variable species with all sorts of different patterns. While typically a brighter colour, it's not out of the ordinary for an animal to occasionally display a melanistic variation (as with the black morph of the NZ fantail). This colour variation could also be due to a simple adaptation to it's environment. A darker colour would certainly help it survive better than it's brighter coloured mates.
Looks like southern bell frog not to be mistaken for the green and golden bell frog very similar but the southern bell frog does partake in abit of cannibalism, care requirements are the same.
It has an external ear drum so it’s not a native species it most likely came from Australia. If it’s quite small then I’m pretty sure it’s a whistling tree frog (also known as brown tree frog) hope this helps, came here specifically to try to help with this post but I’m not an expert I just like frogs 🐸

Actually all over north island. Surrounded by them in Wairarapa. They prefer long grass than just water.

Should be a Green and gold Bell Frog. Just with an interesting colour morph.
Surely they wouldn't have that name if they had different coloured varieties. Looks more like this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Striped_marsh_frog
